Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, side/windowNov 6, 2025

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014 Buick Verano and Chevrolet Cruze vehicles. The left and/or right-side roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflators located on the roof rails above the headliner, may rupture at the inflator weld joint.

An inflator that ruptures may partially inflate the air bag and cause sharp metal fragments to enter or exit the vehicle, increasing the risk of an injury.

Dealers will replace the left and/or right-side RRAB modules, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 5, 2025. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N252530830. 4. Electrical system, ignitionJul 5, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Buick Verano and 2016 Chevrolet Malibu as the electronic park lock lever may allow the ignition key to be removed without the transmission being in PARK. Also, certain 2013 Buick Encore, 2011 Buick Regal, 2013-2014 Buick Verano, 2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox 2013-2015 Chevrolet Malibu, and 2011-2013 GMC Terrain vehicles may have been serviced with similar defective replacement electronic park lock levers. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."

If the key is removed without the transmission in PARK, the vehicle may rollaway as occupants are exiting, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the key cylinder lock housing, free of charge. The recall began on October 14, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick 1-800-521-7300, and GMC 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 50490 and 50491.

  5. SteeringJul 10, 2015

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles manufactured November 8, 2013, to March 12, 2015, and 2015 Chevrolet Volt vehicles manufactured April 11, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the inner tie rod may not be tightened to specification allowing the tie rod to separate from the steering gear.

Separation of the tie rod from the steering gear could result in the loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gear assembly, free of charge. The recall began on July 28, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 15386.

  6. Equipment, electricalJul 2, 2014

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Buick Encore all-wheel-drive vehicles manufactured August 23, 2012, to September 9, 2013; Verano vehicles manufactured August 8, 2012, to June 20, 2013; Chevrolet Cruze vehicles manufactured August 7, 2012, to August 16, 2013, and 2012-2014 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles manufactured May 10, 2011, to August 16, 2012 equipped with a Calix oil pan/block heater. In cold temperatures, the insulation on the engine block heater cord can become damaged, allowing the wires to be exposed.

Exposed wires increase the risk of electrical shock and personal injury if the cord is handled while it is plugged in.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine oil pan/block heater cord with a new cord that is rated for temperatures of minus 40 degree Celsius. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14257.

  7. Air bagsJun 26, 2014

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the driver's front air bag inflator may have been manufactured with an incorrect part.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's air bag, the air bag's inflator may rupture and the air bag may not inflate. The rupture could cause metal fragments to strike and potentially seriously injure the vehicle occupants. Additionally, if the air bag does not inflate, the driver is at an increased risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver side air bag, free of charge. The recall began on June 28, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14305.

  8. Power train, axle assembly, axle shaftMar 31, 2014

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles equipped with a 1.4L turbo engine, and manufactured between November 28, 2012, and March 7, 2014. On the affected vehicles, the right front half shaft may fracture and separate.

If the half shaft fractures and separates while driving, the vehicle would lose power and coast to a stop. If a vehicle with a fractured half shaft is parked without the parking brake applied, the vehicle could move unexpectedly. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the right half shaft, as needed, free of charge. Parts for the remedy are not currently available. GM will send an interim letter to owners in May 2014. A second owner letter will be mailed when parts are available. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-866-694-6546. GM's number for this recall is 14079. This is an expansion of recall 13V-452. NOTE: Some vehicles subject to this recall were subject to the recall campaign initiated in 2013. Some of those vehicles were repaired using defective parts. Those owners will be advised that they must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign and that having the earlier recall completed did not remedy their vehicles.

  9. Power train, automatic transmissionFeb 21, 2014

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Buick Regal, LaCrosse, Verano, and Enclave, and Chevrolet Impala, Malibu, Cruze, and Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjuster may disengage from the transmission shift lever. As such, these vehicles do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect." They also fail to conform to FMVSS number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."

If a vehicle's shift cable disengages from the transmission shift lever, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the driver may be able to shift the lever to the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjusters, free of charge. The recall began on April 10, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Buick owners at 1-800-521-7300, and GMC owners at 1-800-462-8782. General Motors' number associated with this recall is 14048.

  10. Power train, axle assembly, axle shaftSep 23, 2013

General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles equipped with manual transmissions (MF3/MR5) and manufactured January 24, 2013, through August 1, 2013.

General Motors has notified owners. Dealers will replace the half shaft assembly, free of charge. The safety recall began on October 15, 2013. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300. This is General Motors campaign number 13276.

  1. Steering, Air bags, Service brakes, Aug 15, 2015, crash

AT 55MPH I FELT THAT I HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO STOP IN A HURRY. I APPLIED FIRM PRESSURE ON THE BREAKS AND THE BREAKS LOCKED UP. THE CAR BEGAN TO GO INTO A SKIDDING MOTION AND I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OVER THE STEERING WHEEL TO MOVE OUT OF THE WAY, I COULD HAVE AVOIDED THIS COLLISION IF I TURNED TO THE RIGHT, BUT BECAUSE I HAD NO STEERING ABILITY I REAR-ENDED THEM FROM MY SKID. THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM, IT IS SUPPOSE TO HELP ME BY PUMPING THE BRAKES FOR ME, BUT IT DIDN'T. I SUSTAINED A BROKEN LEG WHEN THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED AT MY LEG. ON OTHER OCCASIONS, I HAD ALSO EXPERIENCED THE LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING..CAR WOULD HESITATE AND THEN POWER AND THOUGHT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION. BROUGHT IT IN FOR THAT AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT

  2. Steering, Apr 3, 2015

WHILE DRIVING AT 65-70 MPH ON STRAIGHT AND LEVEL HIGHWAY, STEERING WOULD DEVELOP A "STICKY OR DEAD SPOT" ON CENTER WHEN ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A SLIGHT CORRECTION. IT REQUIRED INCREASED EFFORT TO OVERCOME THE STICKING SPOT RESULTING IN OVERSTEER CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO OVER-VEER. VERY DANGEROUS. NHTSA IS AWARE OF THE DEFECT. HARD TO BELIEVE THERE IS NO RECALL.. *TR

  3. Steering, Apr 3, 2015

WHEN MAKING A SLIGHT CORRECTION ON THE HI-WAY THE STEERING WHEEL FEELS AS IF IT BINDS AND THE AFTER A SHORT TURN OF THE WHEEL IT SUDDENLY TAKES OFF. IT DOES THIS IN EITHER DIRECTION AND YOU END UP WEAVING BACK AND FORTH TRYING TO STAY IN YOUR LANE. THE CAR IS NOW BEGINNING TO DO THIS AT ALL SPEEDS ON THE HI-WAY AND I AM BEGINNING TO FEEL UNSAFE. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO PROBLEM AT SLOW SPEEDS AROUND THE CITY. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 CHEVROLET CRUZE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A SIDEWALK. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. NO POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN MADE UNKNOWN REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000.

  6. Steering, Service brakes, Jan 27, 2015, crash

BRAKES LOCKED UP (ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM FAULTY) CAUSING THE CAR TO SKID RATHER THAN SLOW DOWN DURING STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. I WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND COULD NOT EVEN TRY TO SWERVE TO AVOID THE OTHER VEHICLE. CAR WAS UNABLE TO STOP IN TIME AND THERE WAS A COLLISION. *TR

  7. Steering, Dec 30, 2014

WHEN TRAVELING DOWN THE INTERSTATE ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS THE STEERING COLUMN BECOMES 'STUCK' OR 'STICKY' IN THE ASPECT THAT IT REQUIRES EXTRA EXERTION OF FORCE TO MOVE IT IN EITHER DIRECTIONS. THIS RESULTS IN THE CAR SWERVING AND ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION ALMOST WRECKING. *JS

WATER PUMP HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO LEAK, COMPUTER REPROGRAMED TO FIX STEERING WHEEL CATCH, BATTERY TERMINAL CABLE REPLACED FOR UNKNOWN REASON. ALL THIS ON A BRAND NEW 2014 CRUZE. WTF? NOT TO MENTION INITIAL DRIVE SHAFT REPAIRS. THOUGHT THIS WAS AN AMERICAN MADE CAR WITH QUALITY AMERICAN PARTS, WORST FIRST NEW CAR BUYER EXPERIENCE EVER. MAKE IT RIGHT GM. *TR

AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE STEERING STICKS. MAKING IT SCARY TO DRIVE AND DANGEROUS. *TR

  10. Steering, Nov 16, 2014

WHILE TRAVELING ON A 50 MILE TRIP ( EACH WAY) 100 TOTAL, OVER THE WEEKEND I NOTICED AT TRAVELING SPEEDS OF 65-70 MPH THAT THE STEERING WAS ALMOST UNRESPONSIVE FOR A SECOND, OR SLOPPY, LIKE IT HAD A DEAD SPOT AND WASN'T RESPONDING. I WAS NOTICING, THAT WHEN I WENT TO ADJUST THE STEERING THERE WAS LIKE A SPOT IN THE STEERING WHERE IT WOULDN'T REACT WHICH I FOUND VERY UNSAFE. UPON DECELERATING AT SLOWER SPEEDS ON REGULAR ROADS AROUND 30-40MPH I NOTICED THE PROBLEM STILL BEING THERE. I FIND IT EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND ITS LIKE THE STEERING ISN'T RESPONDING PROPERLY WHICH IN THE EVENT OF NEEDING TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT CAN END UP CAUSING ONE. I ASK THAT SOMEONE PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS MATTER. I DID SOME GOOGLE SEARCHES ONLINE AND HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE MANY OWNERS OF CHEVROLET CRUZE VEHICLES HAVING THESE PROBLEMS. I WILL BE CONTACTING MY DEALER IN THE MORNING. UNFORTUNATELY THEY HAVEN'T BEEN VERY GOOD AT FIGURING OUT OTHER PROBLEMS THAT I HAVE HAD IN THE PAST. CRUZE OWNERS SPEAK UP PLEASE SO WE CAN GET THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED. *TR

  11. Steering, Electrical system, Wheels, Aug 28, 2014

I PARALLEL PARKED MY CAR ON A HILLSIDE STREET WITH THE FRONT WHEELS ANGLED TO TOUCH THE CONCRETE CURB PER THE CITY'S HILLSIDE PARKING RULES. I REMOVED THE KEY AND LOCKED THE DOORS. WHEN I RETURNED TO DRIVE HOME AFTER THE CAR WAS SAFELY PARKED FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR ( TIME WAS ABOUT 6:30 PM--STILL DAYLIGHT) I COULD NOT TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO UNLOCK THE ELECTRIC STEERING LOCK. NONE OF THE ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES WORKED BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED. I COULDN'T OPEN THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS, SO I WAS SWEATING WITH ALL THE WINDOWS CLOSED. I WAS ABLE TO CALL ONSTAR WITH MY CELL PHONE FOR HELP AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT MY BATTERY WAS FULLY CHARGED AND THEY HAD ME TRY MY OTHER IGNITION KEY AND TO REPEATEDLY TURN/ROCK THE STEERING WHEEL FORCEFULLY TO UNLOCK IT WITH THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. AFTER NOTHING WORKED, THE ONSTAR SERVICE PERSON SAID HE WOULD CALL A TOW TRUCK FOR SERVICE. AFTER WE HUNG UP, AND I WAS WAITING, I TRIED THE IGNITION KEY AGAIN, AND THE KEY TURNED AND UNLOCKED THE ELECTRIC STEERING LOCK. I COULD START THE CAR TO DRIVE AGAIN.I CALLED ONSTAR BACK TO CANCEL THE TOW SERVICE CALL. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY CHEVROLET DEALER 3 DAYS LATER FOR A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE APPOINTMENT I HAD MADE 3 WEEKS BEFORE. NOTHING THEY COULD DO, EXCEPT ADVISE ME NOT TO ANGLE THE FRONT WHEEL WHEN I PARKED & LOCKED THE CAR. THIS DOES NOT SEEM LIKE A SAFE WAY TO DESIGN AN STEERING IGNITION LOCK. IT TOOK ME OVER 45 MINUTES TO FINALLY UNLOCK THE STEERING WHEEL & START THE CAR. *TR

  12. Steering, Aug 13, 2014

WHILE DRIVING IN STRAIGHT LINE ON HIGHWAY THE STEERING LOCKED OR HIT A DEAD SPOT WHILE TRYING TO MAKE A MINOR CORRECTION TO STAY WITHIN MY LANE. I FELT A SLIGHT RESISTANCE THOUGH THE WHEEL TO MY STEERING CORRECTION AND THEN THE RESISTANCE WALL WOULD BREAK AND THE CAR WOULD RAPIDLY JERKED TO THE DIRECTION OF THE INPUT. FELT ALMOST LIKE A NOTCH IN A RATCHET. THIS PROBLEM WOULD REPLICATE THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO CORRECT FOR THE INITIAL OVER STEER INPUT CAUSED FROM PREVIOUS DEAD SPOT. CAR WOULD WONDER IN LANE CHASING STEERING INPUTS AND DISTRACTING THE DRIVER DUE TO FULL ATTENTION NEEDING TO BE USED TO STEER THE CAR WITH OUT DRIFTING. PROBLEM MADE ME FEEL UNSAFE AND I HAD NO STEERING FEEL WITH THE CAR. MAKES DRIVING IN WINDY CONDITIONS DIFFICULT AND SCARY. I ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS IDENTICAL PROBLEM ON A RENTAL CRUZE. *TR

  13. Steering, May 13, 2014

NO MATTER WHAT MY SPEED, MY STEERING WHEEL STICKS WHEN I GO TO MAKE MINOR STEERING CORRECTIONS AND OVERCOMPENSATES WHEN IT COMES LOOSE, RESULTING IN THE CAR TURNING MORE THAN WANTED. *TR

  14. Steering, Apr 27, 2014

I HAVE 5500 MILES ON MY 2014 CRUZE DIESEL AND RECENTLY I HAVE NOTICED A DISTURBING PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THERE SEEMS TO BE A "DEAD" SPOT IN THE CENTER OF THE STEERING RANGE. IT IS PARTICULARLY NOTICEABLE WHEN I MAKE A LANE CHANGE AT 65 - 70 MPH IN TRAFFIC. THE STEERING IS NOT TIGHT AND PRECISE... IT SORT OF FEELS SLOPPY LIKE A HIGH MILEAGE CAR THAT HAS SOME FREE PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. IT IS SCARY. I HAVE HEARD THAT THE CHEVY CRUZE HAD PROBLEMS LIKE THIS IN 2012 AND EARLIER. I ASSUMED THAT THEY HAD CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. I GUESS THEY HAVEN'T. *TR

  15. Steering, Feb 14, 2014

THE FOLLOWING ISSUE ONLY OCCURS ONCE THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR 15+ MILES AND IS "WARMED UP". WHEN ON A STRAIGHT ROAD AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH MINOR CORRECTIONS TO THE STEERING IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN POSITION IN THE LANE. THE STEERING WHEEL STICKS WHEN ATTEMPTING TO MAKE THESE MINOR CORRECTIONS, RESULTING IN ADDITIONAL STRENGTH BEING USED IN ORDER TO MOVE THE WHEEL. THE WHEEL ALWAYS MOVES WITH THIS ADDITIONAL PRESSURE, BUT SOMETIMES IT RESULTS IN AN OVERCORRECTION CAUSING THE DRIVER TO HAVE TO CORRECT IN THE OTHER DIRECTION. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND FOUND HUNDREDS OF DIFFERENT CRUZE OWNERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM ON VARIOUS WEBSITES, WITH VARYING DEGREES OF DEALERSHIP ASSISTANCE IN ATTEMPTING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TO BRING MY VEHICLE INTO THE DEALER ON FEBRUARY 22ND, BUT THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE I SPOKE WITH STATED THERE WERE NO TECHNICAL BULLETINS OR OTHER GUIDANCE THAT HE COULD FIND REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. IF, AS A FAIRLY QUICK INTERNET SEARCH INDICATES, THAT THERE ARE HUNDREDS, IF NOT PERHAPS THOUSANDS OF CRUZE DRIVERS WITH A SIMILAR PROBLEM, AND KEEPING IN MIND THAT STEERING IS PROBABLY THE SECOND MOST IMPORTANT AUTO SYSTEM SUPERSEDED ONLY BY BRAKING, THEN PERHAPS THIS PROBLEM DESERVES FORMAL REVIEW BY THE NHTSA. *TR

  16. Steering, Feb 14, 2014

AT HIGHWAY SPEED WHILE GOING STRAIGHT FOR AT LEAST A FEW SECONDS, THE STEERING WHEEL WILL LOCK UP AT CENTER POSITION. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO MAKE MINOR LANE CORRECTIONS, THE STEERING WHEEL STICKS AND UPON MORE INPUT FORCE SUDDENLY JERKS WHEN POWER ASSIST RETURNS. THIS COULD LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT ESPECIALLY IN POOR ROAD CONDITIONS. *TR

  17. Steering, Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Jan 22, 2014

WHEN DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE AT HIGHWAY SPEED, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT MAKE SMALL STEERING CORRECTIONS. WHEN A SLIGHT CORRECTION IS ATTEMPTED, A "NOTCH" OR "HITCH" IS FELT IN THE STEERING WITH INCREASED RESISTANCE IN THE WHEEL, UPON OVERCOMING THE "NOTCH" IN THE STEERING, THE VEHICLE OVERCORRECTS AND MUST BE BROUGHT BACK. WHILE THE BEHAVIOR OCCURS IN A VARIETY OF TEMPERATURES AND CLIMATE CONDITIONS, IT SEEMS ONLY TO OCCUR ONCE THE VEHICLE HAS REACHED OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND REMAINED THERE FOR 30-60 MINUTES OR MORE. THE BEHAVIOR ALSO DOES NOT OCCUR IN LOW-SPEED DRIVING OR ROUTES, SUCH AS CURVES, THAT REQUIRE CONSTANT STEERING INPUT, BUT ONLY WHEN SMALL CORRECTIONS ARE NEEDED DURING STRAIGHT-LINE HIGHWAY DRIVING. WHILE THE ISSUE POSES ONLY A MINOR RISK ON DRY, OPEN ROAD, IT COULD CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE OR INJURY IN TIGHT TRAFFIC OR POOR ROAD CONDITIONS SUCH AS SNOW OR ICE. *TR

  18. Steering, Dec 20, 2013

WHILE DRIVING AT HWY SPEEDS THE STEERING WILL APPEAR TO STICK OR NOT RESPOND. IT FEELS AS IF THERE IS NO RESPONSE FROM THE MINOR INPUT FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. THEN YOU PUT A LITTLE MORE INPUT IN THE WHEEL AND THE CAR APPEARS TO CATCH UP TO THE COMMAND GIVING IT MINOR SWERVING FEELING. IT SEEMS TO BE QUITE COMMON WITH CRUZES. I HAVE FOUND OVER 100 COMPLAINTS ON ONE FORUM ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THE POSSIBLE UNSAFE CONDITION. *TR
