Recalls and investigations

  1. Structure, frame and membersMar 30, 2023

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2007-2011 CR-V vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame to corrode and possibly detach the rear trailing arm.

A detached rear trailing arm can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and install a support brace or repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed May 22, 2023. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is UE3.

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 ACCORD, 2007-2010 CR-V, AND 2005-2008 ELEMENT PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 1, 2004, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3, 2010. THE OUTER RACE OF THE SECONDARY SHAFT BEARING MAY BE BROKEN DURING CERTAIN DRIVING STYLES. A BROKEN OUTER RACE MAY CAUSE ABNORMAL NOISE, THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO TURN ON, AND ALLOW CONTACT BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION IDLE GEAR AND AN ELECTRONIC SENSOR HOUSING WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION.

THIS COULD RESULT IN A SHORT CIRCUIT CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. ADDITIONALLY, BROKEN PIECES OF THE OUTER RACE OR BALL BEARING FROM THE SECONDARY SHAFT MAY BECOME LODGED IN THE PARKING PAWL RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AFTER THE DRIVER HAS PLACED THE GEAR SELECTOR IN THE PARK POSITION. ENGINE STALL AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO PERSONS WITHIN THE PATH OF A ROLLING VEHICLE.

HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 27, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.

  1. Electrical system, Jul 18, 2013

RIGHT REAR DOOR WOULD NOT STAY UNLOCKED IN THE BEGINNING. SINCE THEN, ALL DOORS EXCEPT THE DRIVER'S UNLOCK SECONDS AFTER THEY ARE COMMANDED TO LOCK, THIS IS WITH OR WITHOUT THE CAR RUNNING, DRIVERS MASTER SWITCH, FOB OR AUTO LOCK, MAKES NO DIFFERENCE THEY WON'T STAY LOCKED. NO SECURITY HERE. I HAVE DRIVEN HONDAS SINCE THE EARLY 80'S. FIRST PROBLEM I HAVE HAD LIKE THIS. HONDA NEEDS TO STEP UP AND FIX THIS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. *TR

  2. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jul 17, 2013

ON MARCH 21, 2012, I TOOK MY2008 HONDA CRV FOR SERVICE .MY POWER DOOR LOCKS WERE MALFUNCTIONING.. THEY WOULD CONSTANTLY LOCK AND UN LOCK AS I WAS DRIVING. THEY WOULD BE CLICKING LOCK AND UNLOCK , DEALER CLAIMED I NEEDED AN ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY AT THE COST OF APP. $250. I NATURALLY HAD IT REPAIRED AS IT WAS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN, SINCE MY SMALL GRANDSONS ARE IN THE BACK. ON JULY 10, 2013 I RETURNED WITH THE IDENTICAL DOOR LOCK PROBLEM. SINCE I HAD DRIVEN MORE THAN 12,000 MILES SINCE THE LAST REPAIR , THIS WAS REPAIR WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. AFTER EXPRESSING MY DISSATISFACTION, THE DEALER SUPPOSEDLY CALLED HONDA DIRECTLY AND HONDA AGREED TO PAY HALF OF REPAIR COSTS. MY COST -$87.00. SINCE IT WAS A MAJOR SAFETYCONCERN FOR ME, I AGREED. GUESS WHAT? TWO DAYS LATER THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE DOOR LOCKS RE OCCURRED. THEY ARE CONSTANTLY CLICKING OPEN AND CLOSED.WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER THEY TOLD ME IT'S PROBABLY AN UNDERLYING ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. I AM RELUCTANT TO SPEND ANYMORE ON THIS APPARENTLY UNFIXABLE ISSUE, BUT IT IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUNG CHILDREN AND INFANTS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO BE IN THE BACKSEAT. JUDGING BY THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEBSITE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE NHTSA PRESSURE HONDA MOTORS TO ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION. *TR

  3. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jul 11, 2013

MY 2008 HONDA CR-V HAS STARTED LOCKING THE DOORS BY ITSELF. I SHUT THE FRONT DOOR BEFORE I OPENED THE BACK DOOR TO GET MY 11 MONTH OLD BABY OUT OF THE CAR AND THE DOORS LOCKED BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE BACK DOOR. IT WAS OVER 100 DEG F, SO I HAD TO CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO BREAK A WINDOW TO GET MY CHILD OUT OF THE CAR. *TR

  4. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jul 7, 2013

REAR LOCK INITIALLY NOT WORKING AND ACTUATOR WAS REPLACED FOR APPROXIMATELY $250. APPROXIMATELY 1 MONTH LATER ALL DOOR LOCKS REPEATEDLY ATTEMPTED TO LOCK AND UNLOCK WHILE DRIVING AS FRONT DOOR ACTUATOR MALFUNCTIONED. I WAS UNABLE TO LOCK FRONT DOOR ELECTRICALLY, WITH KEY OR BY MANUALLY PUSHING LOCK. ALL DOORS WOULD NOT LOCK AUTOMATICALLY WHILE DRIVING BUT REPEATEDLY ATTEMPTED TO LOCK MAKING LOUD NOISE WHILE DRIVING. FRONT AND SECOND REAR DOOR ACTUATORS NOW NEED TO BE REPLACED AT SAME COST. SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY $750 TO BE ABLE TO SAFELY RIDE IN CAR WITH DOORS LOCKED OR LOCK CAR WHEN UNATTENDED. I AM SURE THE FOURTH LOCK WILL GO SOON AT THIS RATE. THE CAR WAS NOT ABLE TO BE LOCKED MANUALLY AND THERE WAS NOW WAY TO STOP THE REPEATED LOUD NOISE WHILE DRIVING WHICH WOULD HAVE ALLOWED ME NOT TO PAY THE HIGH COST OF REPAIR / *TR

  5. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 27, 2013

ELECTRIC DOOR LOCKS MALFUNCTION AUTOMATICALLY LOCKING OR REFUSING TO LOCK ON PASSENGER AND READ DOORS.. I AM TOLD THERE IS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH THE LOCKING SYSTEM THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A HIGH COST. CREATING A SAFETY ISSUE WITH REAR DOORS FOR OUR GRANDCHILDREN AS DOORS MAY LOCK OR UNLOCK AS THE CAR IS DRIVEN. *TR

  6. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 23, 2013

FRONT RIGHT DOOR UNLOCKS ITSELF AFTER LOCKING THE CAR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE DOOR UNLOCKS ITSELF WHILE THE CAR IS IN DRIVING MODE. *TR

  7. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 21, 2013

DOOR LOCKING SYSTEM FAILURE. FIRST REAR DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR LOCK WENT OUT-WILL NOT UNLOCK WITH ALARM KEY, NOR WITH THE INNER LOCK BUTTON SYSTEM. MUST BE MANUALLY UNLOCKED AND LOCKED. THIS CAUSED THE REAR HATCH TO NOT OPEN. WILL ONLY OPEN ONCE I HAVE MANUALLY UNLOCKED REAR DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. NOW, THE PASSENGER DOOR DOES NOT STAY LOCKED--WHETHER I LOCK IT WITH THE KEY, BUTTON, OR MANUALLY. IT SLOW OPENS BACK TO THE UNLOCKED POSITION RIGHT AFTER I LOCK IT. I AM CONCERNED THAT SOMEONE WILL ENTER MY VEHICLE WHEN I AM NOT AROUND. *TR

  8. Electrical system, Structure, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 18, 2013

IN AUGUST OF 2012, THE RIGHT REAR DOOR LOCK WOULD NOT STAY LOCKED. WE HAD THE FAULTY PART REPLACED. NOW IN JUNE OF 2013, WE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE RIGHT FRONT DOOR LOCK. IT BEGAN BY NOT STAYING UNLOCKED. WHEN UNLOCKED THE DOOR BY ( ANY METHOD), THE LOCK WOULD ONLY STAY UNLOCKED FOR LESS THAN A SECOND BEFORE RELOCKING ON ITS OWN. NOW THE PROBLEM HAS CHANGED TO WHERE THE DOOR WILL NOT STAY LOCKED AS IN THE PROBLEM DOOR LOCK FROM LAST YEAR. THE DOOR CONTINUES TO TRY TO LOCK EACH TIME THE VEHICLE REACHES THE SPEED THAT THE DOORS LOCK AUTOMATICALLY. *TR

  9. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 17, 2013

DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR ON REAR PASSENGER DOOR BEGAN TO GIVE OUT AND RATTLE WHEN TRYING TO LOCK OR UNLOCK. IT ALSO FAILED TO UNLOCK OR LOCK AND AT TIMES LOCKED AND UNLOCKED ON ITS OWN. LOCK WAS REPLACED. JUST RECENTLY, THE DRIVER DOOR DID THE SAME AND IT WAS ALSO REPLACED. NOW THE DRIVER REAR AND FRONT PASSENGER ARE DOING THE EXACT SAME THING. SOMETIMES THE DOOR LOCKS AND UNLOCKS AUTOMATICALLY OR WHEN I UNLOCK THE DOOR, IT QUICKLY RELOCKS. SAME RATTLING NOISE AS OTHER TWO DOORS. *TR

  10. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 14, 2013

CANNOT UNLOCK THE DOORS USING THE KEY MANUALLY. THE DOOR LOCKS RELOCK WITHIN 1 SECOND AFTER UNLOCKING THE DOOR ELECTRONICALLY. HAVE TO HAVE HAND ON THE DOOR HANDLE WHEN UNLOCKING THE CAR OTHERWISE IT WILL RELOCK BEFORE I CAN GET THE DOOR OPEN. *TR

  11. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 14, 2013

PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WILL NOT LOCK WITH EITHER THE KEY FOB OR MANUALLY. WHEN USING THE KEY FOB IT WILL LOCK AND THEN IMMEDIATELY UNLOCK. THE SAME HAPPENS WHENEVER THE LOCK BUTTON IS PRESSED ON THE DRIVER/PASSENGER DOOR. WHEN LOCKING IT MANUALLY ON THE PASSENGER DOOR, IT WILL UNLOCK IMMEDIATELY AS WELL. *TR

  12. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 7, 2013

LOCKS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING WHILE DRIVING--A SAFETY ISSUE. MY CAR BROKEN INTO DUE TO CAR'S INABILITY TO LOCK. IN ADDITION, THE CAR ALARM DOES NOT FUNCTION AS THE MALFUNCTIONING ACTUATOR ON CAR IS SIGNALING THAT CAR IS UNLOCKED WHEN IT IS NOT. HONDA FIXED ACTUATOR ON ONE DOOR, ONLY TO HAVE ANOTHER DOOR MALFUNCTION LESS THAN 2 MONTHS LATER. CALLED AMERICAN HONDA TODAY AND THEY ARE REFUSING TO FIX WHAT IS DEFECTIVE PART SINCE THEY STATE IS NO LONGER UNDER THEIR 3 YEAR WARRANTY PERIOD. CAR DOES NOT LOCK WHILE DRIVING. ONLINE REPORTS OF PEOPLE NOT BEING ABLE TO GET OUT OF CARS. IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH OR FIRE, THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM IN ADDITION TO SAFETY. THERE IS A PENDING CLASS ACTION SUIT FILED 1-18-13 IN PENNSYLVANIA ON THIS SAME ISSUE FIR CONSUMERS TO BE AWARE OF. TO HAVE HONDA DO NOTHING ABOUT THIS OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE IS OF SERIOUS CONCERN!! *TR

  13. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 7, 2013

I HAVE A 2008 CRV AND MY DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS ARE FAILING TO KEEP THE DOORS OF THE VEHICLE LOCKED. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME OR THIRD TIME I HAVE HAD THEM REPLACED AND THEY HAVE BURNED OUT AGAIN AND ARE LEAVING THE DOORS OF MY VEHICLE UNLOCKED AT SPEED. I PRESS THE LOCK BUTTON AND THEY LOCK ONLY TO UNLOCK SECONDS LATTER. THEY ONLY SEEM TO HAVE A SERVICE LIFE OF 20K-35K MILES! THIS MEAN EVERY TWO YEARS I HAVE ALL THE LOCKS IN MY CAR FAIL TO REMAIN LOCKED. I HAVE A AMERICAN CAR FROM 1996 AND THE ORIGINAL LOCKS STILL WORK FINE AND STAY LOCKED! *TR

  14. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 2, 2013

I STEPPED OUT OF MY CAR WHILE IT WAS RUNNING AND THE CAR LOCKED ITSELF. I HAD TO WALK HOME, GET THE SPARE KEY, AND THEN WALK BACK TO MY CAR. THEN, THE CAR WOULD NOT UNLOCK WITH THE SPARE KEY, MANUALLY OR BY PUSHING THE UNLOCK BUTTON. I ALSO TRIED THE VALET KEY--IT WOULDN'T WORK EITHER. THE DRIVERS' DOOR IS THE ONLY DOOR THAT HAS A KEY LOCK ON IT SO I COULDN'T TRY THE KEY IN ANY OF THE OTHER DOORS. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED BY HONDA. *TR

  15. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 2, 2013

THE DRIVER DOOR HAS STARTED LOCKING ON OWN. I STOPPED TO GET GAS ON A SATURDAY EVENING AND I GOT OUT TO PAY AT THE PUMP, ONLY TO FIND MY CAR HAD LOCKED ITSELF. MY PURSE AND CELL PHONE WAS INSIDE. LUCKILY THE GAS STATION HAD AN ATTENDANT WHO WAS KIND ENOUGH TO LET ME USE HIS PHONE. I WAS 60 MILES FROM HOME. I COULD NOT FIND A LOCKSMITH TO COME OPEN IT UP ON A SATURDAY EVENING. SO, NOT ONLY DO I HAVE TO REPLACE THE ACTUATOR IN THE CAR, I HAVE TO REPLACE THE WINDOW ON MY BACK DOOR BECAUSE I HAD TO ASK A NEIGHBOR TO BREAK IN MY HOUSE TO GET THE SPARE KEY, THEN DRIVE 120 MILES ROUND TRIP TO BRING IT TO ME. EVEN WITH THE SPARE KEY, IT WAS A STRUGGLE TO GET THE DOOR TO OPEN BECAUSE IT WOULD EITHER NOT UNLOCK OR IMMEDIATELY RE-LOCK. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE-AS AFTER ALL THIS ORDEAL TO GET HOME, THE CAR WOULD THEN NOT UNLOCK TO LET ME OUT. *TR

  16. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, May 28, 2013

THE PASSENGER DOOR LOCKS IMMEDIATELY AFTER UNLOCKING, BEFORE YOU CAN GRAB THE HANDLE, PREVENTING YOU FROM OPENING THE DOOR. THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER IS TRAPPED INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THIS MAY SEEM LIKE A MINOR PROBLEM BUT IF THE PASSENGER NEEDED TO GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE IN CASE OF ACCIDENT, FIRE OR WATER THEN THEY WILL HAVE NO CHANCE AND COULD SUFFER SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. FROM READING INCIDENT REPORTS ON THIS SITE, THIS SEEMS TO BE VERY COMMON PROBLEM AND IT SHOULD BE FIXED BEFORE SOMEONE DIES. *TR

  17. Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, May 23, 2013

I AM EXPERIENCING A POWER DOOR LOCKING PROBLEM WITH THE BACK SEAT / PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LOCK. THE POWER LOCKING SYSTEM KEEPS TRYING TO LOCK THE DOOR WHILE DRIVING AND IT PRODUCES A CONSTANT CLICKING SOUND. I AM UNABLE TO SECURE MY DOOR. FROM MY RESEARCH, IT APPEARS THAT I HAVE A BAD ACTUATOR AND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR HONDA CR-V'S. *TR

THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE WAS TILTED AND THAT THERE WERE TWO BROKEN MOTOR-MOUNTS BOTH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR COMPRESSOR WAS DEFECTIVE AND WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,000. *TR

A FEW WEEKS BEFORE MY 36 MONTH WARRANTY WAS UP, MY DOOR ACTUATOR WENT OUT IN THE LEFT REAR DOOR. IT WAS REPLACED AND WORKED FINE UNTIL RECENTLY 18 MONTHS LATER IT SEEMS THE SAME DOOR ACTUATOR HAS GONE OUT. I AM TAKING IT IN TO BE REPLACED FOR OVER $200 WHICH IS A BIT MUCH FOR A LIMITED INCOME. THE DOOR IS WORSE NOW THAN BEFORE IN THAT IT KEEPS CYCLING LOCKING AND UNLOCKING AS I'M DRIVING. I THINK HONDA SHOULD REPLACE FOR FREE AS IT IS OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ONLINE. *TR

I CLIMBED OUT THE PASSENGER DOOR AND CLICKED THE LOCK BUTTON ON THE REMOTE. ABOUT AN HOUR LATER I TRIED TO UNLOCK THE CAR FROM THE OUTSIDE AND NONE OF THE DOORS UNLOCKED. ONLY THE DRIVER DOOR HAS A KEYHOLE AND INSERTING THE KEY DID NOT UNLOCK THE CAR. I TRIED USING MY SPARE KEYS BUT NOTHING WORKED. I AM LOCKED OUT OF THE CAR. *TR

CRV ELECTRICAL POWER LOCKING SYSTEM REFUSES TO STAY LOCKED, UNLOCKS DOORS RANDOMLY AND NOW WILL NOT STAY LOCKED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. *TR

THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR UNLOCKS IMMEDIATELY AFTER LOCKING IT, WITH REMOTE OR BY THE DOOR ITSELF. THIS IS A HAZARD BECAUSE ANYONE CAN ENTER VEHICLE WHEN STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHT OR STOP SIGN OR WHEN VEHICLE IS PARKED. *TR
