Recalls and investigations

  1. Structure, frame and membersMar 30, 2023

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2007-2011 CR-V vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame to corrode and possibly detach the rear trailing arm.

A detached rear trailing arm can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and install a support brace or repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed May 22, 2023. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is UE3.

  12. Power train, automatic transmission, control module (tcm/pcm/tecm)Aug 4, 2011

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 ACCORD, 2007-2010 CR-V, AND 2005-2008 ELEMENT PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 1, 2004, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3, 2010. THE OUTER RACE OF THE SECONDARY SHAFT BEARING MAY BE BROKEN DURING CERTAIN DRIVING STYLES. A BROKEN OUTER RACE MAY CAUSE ABNORMAL NOISE, THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO TURN ON, AND ALLOW CONTACT BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION IDLE GEAR AND AN ELECTRONIC SENSOR HOUSING WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION.

THIS COULD RESULT IN A SHORT CIRCUIT CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. ADDITIONALLY, BROKEN PIECES OF THE OUTER RACE OR BALL BEARING FROM THE SECONDARY SHAFT MAY BECOME LODGED IN THE PARKING PAWL RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AFTER THE DRIVER HAS PLACED THE GEAR SELECTOR IN THE PARK POSITION. ENGINE STALL AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO PERSONS WITHIN THE PATH OF A ROLLING VEHICLE.

HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 27, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.

  1. Vehicle speed control, Apr 7, 2010

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HONDA CR-V. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH AN UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO LOSE CONTROL. THE GEAR WAS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH CAUTION. THE RPMS CONTINUED TO INCREASE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 5,335.

  2. Steering, Feb 24, 2010

2009 HONDA CRV VEERS TO THE RIGHT. IF EVEN FOR A SPLIT SECOND ONE LETS GO OF THE STEERING WHEEL, THE CRV VEERS IMMEDIATELY INTO THE RIGHT LANE IN A TOTAL TIME OF 2-3 SECONDS. THIS HAS BEEN A KNOWN DEFECT OVER THE YEARS AND HONDA HAS REFUSED TO RECALL AND NHTSA HAS FAILED TO FOLLOW THROUGH. IF YOU JUST GOOGLE THIS ISSUE, YOU WILL SEE A NUMBER OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. I HAVE HAD TO HAVE AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC SKEW THE ALIGNMENT TO OFFSET THIS DEFECT AS A TEMPORARY FIX. CALLS TO HONDA REGIONAL REP SAYS IT IS UP TO THE DEALER TO FIX IT AND REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE SAFETY ISSUE OR RECALL. THE DEALER SAYS "ITS NORMAL". A REPORT TO NHTSA LAST YEAR HAS GONE IGNORED. *TR

  3. Air bags, Feb 20, 2010, crash

MY WIFE DROVE A HONDA CRV 2009 WHICH WE PURCHASED LAST YEAR AND HAD A FRONT COLLISION WITH A TREE ON 2/19/1010. THE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS SERIOUSLY DAMAGED AND MY WIFE WAS SENT TO ER WITH REPORTED HEAD INJURY. BUT THE AIRBAG NEVER CAME OUT. WE BELIEVE THIS IS A DEFECT WHICH SHOULD BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE INJURY. *TR

  4. Fuel system, Other, Feb 6, 2010

IN CRUISE CONTROL MODE ON HIGHWAY, WHEN SET IN THE RANGE OF 50 TO 65 MILES PER HOUR, THE CAR SOMETIMES SUDDENLY ACCELERATES BY ITSELF AND KEEPS ACCELERATING, EVEN ON THE FLAT ROAD. THE SPEED CHANGE IS FAST, IN A FEW SECONDS. FOR EXAMPLE, ON A FLAT HIGHWAY, SET THE CRUISE CONTROL AT SPEED OF 60 MILES PER HOUR. IF THAT UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION HAPPENS THE SPEED WOULD KEEP GOING UP TO 65, 70, EVEN MORE MILES PER HOUR IN A FEW SECONDS. CANCEL CRUISE CONTROL OR STEP ON BREAK WOULD STOP THE PROBLEM. IT HAPPENED ABOUT 10 TIMES OVER THE PAST HALF A YEAR (I DON'T USE CRUISE CONTROL THAT OFTEN). MY BEST GUESS IS PROBABLY 5% OR MORE OF THE CHANCE. EVERY TIME IT HAPPENED I JUST CANCEL CRUISE CONTROL AND RESET. I CONSIDER IT AS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM ESPECIALLY WHEN CRUISING AT 65 MILES/HOUR AND IT GOES OUT OF CONTROL WHILE THE HIGHWAY MAKE TURNS. THE CAR IS 2009 HONDA CRV. *CN

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HONDA CR-V. THE CONTACT STATED THAT MICE WERE ABLE TO GAIN ENTRY INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE HEATING SYSTEM AND BEGAN NESTING WITHIN THE HEATING SYSTEM AND THE GLOVE BOX. THE MICE WERE CHEWING ON DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF THE VEHICLE WHICH IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD. HE CALLED THE DEALER WHO ADVISED HIM TO PUT MOTH BALLS IN THE VEHICLE. HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED TO-DATE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 9,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 7,500.

  6. Exterior lighting, Nov 2, 2009

2009 CR-V HIGH BEAMS - LITTLE IN-CLOSE LIGHTING 2009 CR-V HIGH BEAMS OFFERS VERY LITTLE IN-CLOSE/FILL LIGHTING. HIGH BEAMS OFFER "REACH" BUT LIGHTING IS WEAK AND DIFFUSED. HIGH BEAM LIGHT BEAM IS ELEVATED FROM THE GROUND GIVING VERY LITTLE IN-CLOSE ILLUMINATION. UNLIKE LOW BEAMS, LOW BEAM FILAMENTS TURN OFF WHEN HIGH BEAMS ARE TURNED ON SO VERY LITTLE IN-CLOSE, NEAR GROUND LIGHTING IS OFFERED. THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM MANEUVERING TIGHT TURNS AND POORLY LIT HIGHWAY CLOVERLEAF EXITS SINCE THERE IS VERY LITTLE IN-CLOSE LIGHTING WHEN THE HIGH BEAMS ARE ON. CAR BROUGHT TO HONDA SERVICE AND REPORTED TO HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE. THEY SAY THERE IS NO PROBLEM. *TR

  7. Tires, Sep 1, 2009

NEW 2009 HONDA CR-V, WITH LESS THAN 500 MILES I STARTED GETTING BAD VIBRATIONS AND CAR VEERING TO THE RIGHT AND THEN TO THE LEFT. HONDA OF OCALA TRIED TO BALANCE AND ALIGN THE VEHICLE MULTIPLE TIMES WHICH DID NOT CORRECT THE VIBRATION. FELT LIKE TIRES HAD A BALD SPOT. AFTER 3 TRIES, THEY DECIDED TO EXAMINE THE TIRES (BRIDGESTONE / DUELLER HT'S) AND FOUND THAT 2 OF THE TIRES HAD BELTS THAT SEPARATED. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS INJURIES IF I HAD NOT PERSISTED. THEY REPLACED THE TIRES AND A RIM WITH SAME TIRES ONLY NEW ONES. A WEEK AND A HALF LATER, CAR CONTINUES TO HAVE VIBRATIONS AND THEY AGAIN THINK IT IS THE TIRES. CAR NOW HAS 2500 MILES AND IS IN THE SHOP AGAIN TODAY. COMPLAINT HAS BEEN FILED WITH HONDA WHO JUST SAYS THE TIRES ARE NOT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY. THERE ARE HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS, SOME WITH CRASHES AND SERIOUS INJURIES BECAUSE OF THESE TIRES. SOME HAVE REPORTED THAT THE SIDEWALLS EXPLODE. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN MY NEW VEHICLE AND I THINK HONDA NEEDS TO STOP PUTTING THESE TIRES ON THEIR VEHICLES AND REPLACE THE ONES OUT THERE WITH DIFFERENT ONE. THIS IS A LAWSUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR

  8. Electrical system, Seats, Aug 17, 2009

BOUGHT A CRV HONDA LAST MONTH. RIGHT AFTER PURCHASE, BEGAN GETTING LARGE ELECTRICAL SHOCKS WHILE OPENING OR SHUTTING DOORS--IN A VARIETY OF SHOES AND CLOTHING. CONTACTED DEALERSHIP AND CORPORATE OFFICE--ALL THEY COULD SAY WAS TO SPRAY THE SEATS AND FLOORS WITH FABRIC SOFTENER. DID SO...LASTED 7-10 DAYS--NOT HAPPY WITH VEHICLE FOR THIS REASON--AFRAID TO GAS THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF CATCHING ON FIRE. *TR

  9. Visibility, Structure, May 22, 2009, crash

I PURCHASED A 2009 HONDA CRV IN FEB. I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE REAR/SIDE VISIBILITY DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE AND VOICED MY CONCERN TO THE SALESWOMAN. SHE ASSURED ME THAT I "WOULD GET USED TO IT." WELL, I HAVEN'T! I HAVE SERIOUS VISIBILITY PROBLEMS WHEN BACKING UP AND CHANGING LANES IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. (I AM A VERY SAFE DRIVER AND HAVE NEVER BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY TRAFFIC VIOLATION OTHER THAN 1 SPEEDING TICKET OVER 30 YEARS AGO AND 1 PARKING TICKET THAT COULD NOT BE AVOIDED.) I BACKED INTO A SIGN POLE IN A PARKING LOT IN MID APRIL, DAMAGING THE REAR RIGHT CORNER OF THE VEHICLE-IN THE BLIND SPOT. TWO DAYS AGO, WHILE I WAS VERY SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, I CAME VERY CLOSE TO A WOMAN PUSHING A BABY IN A CART. I WAS HORRIFIED AND IMMEDIATELY ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THE DEALER WHO SOLD ME THE CAR AND AMERICAN HONDA-BOTH UNSUCCESSFULLY. I SPENT HOURS E-MAILING AND TALKING ON THE PHONE, ASKING FOR A SOLUTION FOR THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM FROM BOTH THE DEALER AND AMERICAN HONDA. A MAN THAT I SPOKE WITH AT AMERICAN HONDA TOLD ME THAT THE DESIGN OF THE '09 CRV IS THE SAME AS THE '07 CRV WHICH HE OWNS. HE STATED THAT HE HAD PARTIALLY CORRECTED THE PROBLEM BY ADDING SMALL ROUND CONCAVE MIRRORS LIKE THOSE USED FOR TRAILERS/RV'S, BUT DID NOT DOCUMENT THAT HE HAD SAID THIS. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT I OWN A NEW, BUT DAMAGED, VEHICLE THAT HAS A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW WHICH CAUSES MAJOR BLIND ZONES. I FEAR THAT IF SOMETHING IS NOT DONE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM ON ALL OF THESE CRV'S DRIVING AROUND, MORE PEOPLE WILL BE INJURED OR KILLED. I FEEL THAT AMERICAN HONDA NEEDS TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESIGN FLAW. FINALLY, TODAY THE ASSIST. MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP SUGGESTED THAT I HAVE SENSORS PUT ON THE VEHICLE AT MY OWN EXPENSE AND REMARKED: "THEY'RE NOT CHEAP." UNACCEPTABLE. *TR

BRAND NEW TWO-WEEK OLD 2009 HONDA CRV. DEFECT IN WINDOW WASHER NOZZLES. FREEZE UP WHEN TEMPS DROP WELL BELOW FREEZING WHICH IN NE PENNSYLVANIA HAPPENS OFTEN. DRIVING ON TURNPIKE IN SNOW SQUALLS--WASHERS FROZE UP AND WE COULD NOT SEE THE ROAD. CONTACTED HONDA DEALER AND THEY TOLD US HONDA DOES NOT CONSIDER THIS RECURRING PROBLEM TO BE A SAFETY FACTOR. IT IS A DEFINITE SAFETY FACTOR WHEN YOU CANNOT SEE THE ROAD. PROBLEM MUST BE RECTIFIED. *TR
