Recalls and investigations

  1. Structure, frame and membersMar 30, 2023

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2007-2011 CR-V vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame to corrode and possibly detach the rear trailing arm.

A detached rear trailing arm can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and install a support brace or repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed May 22, 2023. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is UE3.

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 ACCORD, 2007-2010 CR-V, AND 2005-2008 ELEMENT PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 1, 2004, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3, 2010. THE OUTER RACE OF THE SECONDARY SHAFT BEARING MAY BE BROKEN DURING CERTAIN DRIVING STYLES. A BROKEN OUTER RACE MAY CAUSE ABNORMAL NOISE, THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO TURN ON, AND ALLOW CONTACT BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION IDLE GEAR AND AN ELECTRONIC SENSOR HOUSING WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION.

THIS COULD RESULT IN A SHORT CIRCUIT CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. ADDITIONALLY, BROKEN PIECES OF THE OUTER RACE OR BALL BEARING FROM THE SECONDARY SHAFT MAY BECOME LODGED IN THE PARKING PAWL RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AFTER THE DRIVER HAS PLACED THE GEAR SELECTOR IN THE PARK POSITION. ENGINE STALL AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO PERSONS WITHIN THE PATH OF A ROLLING VEHICLE.

HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 27, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.

THE ENGINE IS CONSUMING EXCESSIVE OIL. TO MY CALCULATIONS (AND THROUGH AN ABBREVIATED OIL CONSUMPTION TEST THROUGH DEALER), THE VEHICLE IS BURNING 1/2 A QUART OF OIL EVERY 1000 MILES (NO LEAKS). BEFORE NOTICING BETWEEN OIL CHANGES THE CAR WOULD GO ALMOST DRY BETWEEN CHANGES. THE OIL LIGHT WOULD FLICKER ON AND THEN GO OFF, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS LESS THAN A QUART OF OIL IN THE CAR. THE DEALER CLAIMS HAVING TO ADD 1/2 QUART TO 1 QUART OF OIL EVERY 1000 MILES IS CONSIDERED NORMAL CONSUMPTION. HONDA OF AMERICA CLAIMS THE SAME. HONDA OF AMERICA HAD NO ANSWER FOR ME AS TO WHY THE OIL LIGHT DID NOT REMAIN ON WHEN CAR WAS RUNNING VERY LOW ON OIL. HONDA OF AMERICA ALSO HAS NO ANSWER AS TO WHY IF THIS IS CONSIDERED NORMAL CONSUMPTION THERE IS NOTHING IN THE MAINTENANCE MANUAL TO WARN THE CONSUMER THAT THEY MAY WANT TO CHECK THEIR OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. THEY WILL TAKE NO OWNERSHIP OR RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SITUATION. *TR

**UPDATE TO COMPLAINT MADE ON 6-17-13*** I INFORMED AMERICAN HONDA ABOUT THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEM, HE SAID NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY BECAUSE DEALER COULD NOT RECREATE THE ISSUE. I INFORMED HIM I WOULD NOT TRUST MY LOVED ONES TO THIS CAR, I ASKED IF HE WOULD LET HIS WIFE AND FAMILY USE THIS CAR, HE SAID 'MAYBE'. (ON WHAT CRITERIA WOULD HE DECIDE THAT I WONDERED). LONG STORY SHORT, HONDA NO HELP, THE DEALER, ON THE OTHER HAND, GILLMAN HONDA OF SAN ANTONIO WAS MOST HELPFUL AND STEPPED UP BY PROVIDING A VERY REASONABLE DISCOUNT ON A 2013 CRV AND GAVE US THE RED CARPET TREATMENT. JUNE 11-13 I HAD OIL CHANGED AT MY DEALER GILMAN HONDA SAN ANTONIO AND HAD CAR CHECKED OUT FOR PROBLEMS BECAUSE I AM ALMOST OUT OF WARRANTY, THEY SAID ALL CLEAR, ALSO HAD NEW KEY MADE AND THEY RESET THE CAR TO RECOGNIZE THE NEW KEYS. NEXT DAY SAME THING, IN REVERSE, PRESSED BRAKES AND SUDDEN ACCELERATION, I WILL TAKE TO DEALER THIS WEEK TO REPORT ISSUE, NOT HOPEFUL AS THERE ARE 15 OF THESE COMPLAINTS ON CARCOMPLAINTS.COM AND NO DEALER HAS YRT FOUND THE SOLUTION. *TR

I OWN A 2010 HONDA CRV, THERE IS A NOTICEABLE HESITATION IN ACCELERATIONS FROM A STOP OR SLOW SPEED. MOST APPARENT WHEN ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN AGAINST ONCOMING TRAFFIC AS THE HESITATION MAKES THESE TURNS DANGEROUS. AS WITH COMPLAINTS 10361582 AND 10361843 (AND LIKELY OTHERS), I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR INTO THE HONDA DEALER WHOSE ASSESSMENT IS THAT THE CAR IS PERFORMING PER SPECIFICATION. I SUSPECT IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH HONDA INCREASING THE COMPRESSION RATIO FOR 2010, BUT NOT PROPERLY TUNING THE TIMING FOR ALL SITUATIONS, BUT I AM NOT A MECHANIC SO IT'S JUST AN UNEDUCATED HUNCH. *TR
