Recalls and investigations

  1. Structure, frame and membersMar 30, 2023

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2007-2011 CR-V vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame to corrode and possibly detach the rear trailing arm.

A detached rear trailing arm can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and install a support brace or repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed May 22, 2023. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is UE3.

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 ACCORD, 2007-2010 CR-V, AND 2005-2008 ELEMENT PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 1, 2004, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3, 2010. THE OUTER RACE OF THE SECONDARY SHAFT BEARING MAY BE BROKEN DURING CERTAIN DRIVING STYLES. A BROKEN OUTER RACE MAY CAUSE ABNORMAL NOISE, THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO TURN ON, AND ALLOW CONTACT BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION IDLE GEAR AND AN ELECTRONIC SENSOR HOUSING WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION.

THIS COULD RESULT IN A SHORT CIRCUIT CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. ADDITIONALLY, BROKEN PIECES OF THE OUTER RACE OR BALL BEARING FROM THE SECONDARY SHAFT MAY BECOME LODGED IN THE PARKING PAWL RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AFTER THE DRIVER HAS PLACED THE GEAR SELECTOR IN THE PARK POSITION. ENGINE STALL AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO PERSONS WITHIN THE PATH OF A ROLLING VEHICLE.

HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 27, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.

  3. Service brakes, Oct 8, 2015

THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN LESS THAN 30,000 MILES (ON AVERAGE APPROXIMATELY 5,500 MILES A YEAR). IT HAS NOT BEEN SUBJECT TO UNUSUAL WEATHER CONDITIONS OF ANY TYPE. THE BRAKE ROTORS HAVE RUSTED AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS IS A RESULT OF A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE FOR HONDA CR-V MODEL YEARS 2007 - 2010. HONDA MADE THE NECESSARY CHANGES TO CORRECT THE DEFECT ON SUBSEQUENT MODEL YEARS. THE DEALERSHIP, CRISWELL HONDA IN GERMANTOWN, MD, CHARGED ME TO RESURFACE THE ROTORS WHICH DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE OF THE INHERENT DEFECT. THE ROTORS HAVE NOT BEEN SUBJECT TO "WEAR AND TEAR" . MY DISCUSSIONS WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER HAVE INDICATED THAT HONDA IS FULLY AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND IS ESSENTIALLY INDIFFERENT TO THE DEFECT AND INSISTS UPON CHARGING THE CUSTOMER FOR THE REPAIR. BECAUSE OF THE INHERENT BRAKE DEFECT IT IS NOT AT ALL CLEAR THAT THE "REPAIR" WILL ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. I HAVE THE ROTOR RESURFACE INVOICE BUT THERE IS NO DISPUTE THAT I WAS CHARGED FOR A "REPAIR" THAT DID NOT FIX THE DEFECT. THERE MAY BE A TECHNICAL MEMO FROM HONDA TO DEALERSHIPS THAT REFERENCES THE PROBLEM. PLEASE CONTACT AMERICAN HONDA TO DISCUSS THIS DEFECT. THANK YOU. *TR

IT WAS POURING RAIN AND I HAD GONE THROUGH WATER. I STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WAITING TO TURN RIGHT, THE LIGHT CHANGED AND THE CAR WOULD BARELY MOVE. BUT WHEN IT DID AND I STOPPED AT THE NEXT LIGHT, APPROX. 1/2 MILE DOWN THE ROAD AGAIN IT WOULD BARELY MOVE AND I DO MEAN BARELY. THE PERSON BEHIND ME GOT OUT AND PUSHED ME OUT OF THE ROAD BY HAND. BOTH THE "LOW OIL PRESSURE INDICATOR" AND "CHARGING SYSTEM INDICATOR" LIGHTS WERE ON. I TURNED THE CAR OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN IT STARTED AGAIN AND RAN FINE. LUCKILY I WASN'T ON THE FREEWAY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO SAID IT WAS PROBABLY "JUST A FLUKE". WELL LOW AND BEHOLD ON JULY 23, 2015 I HAD TO DRIVE THRU BLINDING RAIN AND WHEN I DROVE THRU APPROX. 6" OF WATER ON THE ROAD, THE CAR STALLED OUT AGAIN. IT STARTED AFTER A FEW MINUTES AND THEN STALLED AGAIN. I PULLED OVER AND SAT FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN IT STARTED FINE AND HAS RUN FINE SINCE. THIS MAKES ME FEEL VERY UNSAFE. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO GET THIS PROBLEM SOLVED BECAUSE ONE CAN'T HELP DRIVING IN RAIN AT TIMES.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, WHERE IT WAS VERIFIED THAT THE WATER HAD ACCUMULATED IN THE TIRE WELLS AND DIAGNOSED THAT THE TIRE WELLS WERE NOT PROPERLY SEALED, WHICH CAUSED THE REAR FRAME TO RUST EXCESSIVELY AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE RUST WAS TREATED BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000. UPDATED 10/01/15*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DESIGNED WITH A SEAM SEALER, TO PREVENT WATER INTRUSION. UPDATED 12/17/15. *JB UPDATED 03/28/16.*JB UPDATED 11/27/2017*CN

DRIVER SIDE DOOR WILL NOT UNLOCK WITH POWER BUTTON OR MANUALLY WITH A KEY. CALLED HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY WILL NOT COVER THE EXPENSES TO FIX, EVENTHOUGH THEY'VE HAD A RECALL ON THE SAME ISSUE. UNFORTUNATELY, MY VIN NUMBER APPARENTLY HAS NO COMPLAINTS. DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!?

I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 70MPH. IT WAS 10PM. WE HEARD A LOUD NOISE, SOUNDING LIKE STONES FLYING UP AND HITTING WHAT I THOUGHT WAS THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR. THE NEXT MORNING I SAW THE SUN ROOF HAD EXPLODED. THE REMAINING GLASS LOOKED AS IF IT WAS PUSHED UP FROM THE INSIDE LIKE A VOLCANIC ERUPTION. THERE WAS NO OTHER DAMAGE TO THE ROOF. NO OTHER CARS AROUND AND NO OVER PASSES. THERE IS A WEB SITE WHERE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAVE SHARED SIMILAR STORIES ABOUT MANY DIFFERENT CAR MANUFACTURES WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE SUNROOF GLASS ISSUES. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HONDA CR-V. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE SUN ROOF GLASS EXPLODED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT TO REPORT THE FAILURE TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 142,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. ...UPDATED 04/15/15 *BF

  17. Power train, Electrical system, Latches/locks/linkages, Feb 24, 2015, crash

VEHICLE WAS REAR-ENDED BY A FASTER VEHICLE. THE IMPACT FORCED THE TRANSMISSION INTO "PARK," WHICH AUTOMATICALLY LOCKED THE DOORS, TRAPPING ANY OCCUPANTS. HAD THERE BEEN A FIRE OR WATER SUBMERGENCE SITUATION, THERE COULD BE UNNECESSARY INJURY OR EVEN DEATH. VEHICLE DOOR LOCKS NEED TO BE RE-DESIGNED TO LET OCCUPANTS ESCAPE IN AN EMERGENCY. *JS

  18. Power train, Engine, Dec 31, 2014

ENGINE OR TRANSMITTION BEGINES TO STALL IN THE MORNING WHEN DRIVING AT 50 MPH OR HIGHER ON HIGHWAY. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN IN THE AFTEROON. I TRIED TO WARM UP THE VEHICLE FOR 5 MINS BEFORE DRIVING, BUT THE SIMPTON REMAINS THE SAME. THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE WAS DONE BY DEALERS A COUPLE OF TIMES, BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. *JS

I PURCHASED A HONDA CRV EX 2010 ON JULY 19 2014 AT A LONG ISLAND CITY HYUNDAI DEALER.. CAR RUNS GREAT AND SMOOTH BUT I REALIZED THAT WHILE THE CAR IS IDLE OR STOP ON ANY RED LIGHT THE ENGINE SEEMS TO VIBRATE I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THAT'S NORMAL IN HONDA CRV CARS. AND I'M TRYING TO FIND OUT WHY THIS IS HAPPENING. AND I WENT TO HONDA DEALER AND THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME A $110 SERVICE FEE FOR CHECK UP. I CAN'T PAY $110 SO I CAN GET AN ANSWER SAYING THAT EVERYTHING IS OKAY. *TR

YEAR AFTER HAVING THE CAR I HAD TO REPLACE THE INTERIA LIGHT 3 TIMES. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKE LIGHTS, AND THE TAG LIGHT. WHEN TAKING IT DEALER THEY SAID IT WAS OK. THE DASH LIGHTS FOR THE ABS AND SLIDE CONTROL COMES ON WHEN BACKING UP AND STAYS ON UNTIL I RESTART. THE DEALER SAID IT IS OK AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT STAY ON. *TR

A LOUD START RATTLING NOISE AT COLD START. NOW IT RATTLES WHILE DRIVING AS WELL. *TR

  22. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Oct 20, 2014

THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON ALL THE TIME AND THE DEALER JUST SAYS TO UNSCREW AND RE TIGHTEN THE FUEL CAP. SOMETIMES THIS FIXES AND SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T.

  23. Air bags, Jul 9, 2014

THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG SYMBOL LIGHTS UP BY ITSELF AND GOES OFF BY ITSELF; SOMETIMES IT REMAINS ON FOR AS LONG AS 15 MINS OR AS SHORT AS FEW MINS. IT IS RANDOM AND NOT REPRODUCIBLE ON DEMAND. THERE'S NOTHING ONE CAN DO ON A HIGHWAY IF THE AIRBAG FAILS TO DEPLOY AS ONE WOULD EXPECT. WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER, THEY WANTED A DIAGNOSTIC FEE OF $125 TO FIND THE PROBLEM, AND IF ITS NOT REPRODUCIBLE ON DEMAND IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL TRIES. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING / DESIGN DEFECT AND HONDA SHOULD OWN AND RESOLVE THIS ISSUE, AS ITS NOT EVEN A PART THAT'S SUBJECT TO WEAR - LIKE THE TIRES/BRAKES, ETC. *TR

  24. Vehicle speed control, Fuel/propulsion system, Jun 2, 2014

AT LEAST 5 TIMES NOW MY 2010 HONDA CRV-EX AWD CAR HAS TRIED TO TAKE OFF ON ME WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKE TO COME TO A STOP. I WROTE IT OFF THE FIRST TIME THINKING MAYBE MY FOOT WAS STILL TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKE. THE NEXT TIME IT HAPPENED I LOOKED DOWN TO MAKE SURE MY FOOT WAS ONLY ON THE BRAKE. MY CAR JUMPED FORWARD, EVEN WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. I THREW IT INTO NEUTRAL AND THE MOTOR REVVED UP TO ABOUT 5500 RPMS BEFORE IT DECIDED TO STOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES AT A STOP LIGHT AND TWICE IN A PARKING LOT. I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE MY OWN VEHICLE. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF ANY PROBLEMS SIMILAR TO WHAT I DESCRIBED AND THERE WERE NO RECALLS THAT WOULD BE RELATED TO THIS ISSUE. HELP! WHAT CAN I DO BESIDES TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAVE IT NOT HAPPEN AND TELL ME NOTHING IS WRONG. *TR

  25. Engine, May 27, 2014

THE 2010 HONDA CR-V WAS NOT DRIVING PROPERLY, FELT LIKE THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING/SHAKY. THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON, SO I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER (LESS THAN 70,000 MILES). IT WAS ALMOST OUT OF OIL, EVEN THOUGH I HAD BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINING SERVICE SINCE BUYING THE VEHICLE NEW IN APRIL, 2010. THE HONDA DEALER SERVICED THE CAR. I WENT BACK SHORTLY AFTER SERVICE BECAUSE WE CHECKED THE OIL AND IT WAS LOW AGAIN. THEY STARTED 'OIL CONSUMPTION' TESTS. IT WAS DOWN A BIT EVERY 1,000 MILES BUT THEY KEPT SAYING IT WAS IN THE 'NORMAL' RANGE AND THAT IT IS NOT UNUSUAL TO NEED TO ADD OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES (I HAVE OWNED CARS FOR 30+ YEARS AND THIS IS THE FIRST CAR THAT EVER NEED ADDITIONAL OIL BETWEEN CHANGES). I KEPT TAKING IT IN FOR CONSUMPTION ISSUES. THEY WOULD CHECK THE OIL, TOP IT OFF, AND TELL ME IT WAS 'NORMAL'. THE SERVICE PERSON SAID THE SERVICE MANAGER PRESENTED IT TO THE REGIONAL HONDA SERVICE, BUT THEY SAID IT WAS 'NORMAL' TOO. I STARTED TOPPING OFF THE OIL MYSELF AS THE DEALERSHIP IS A BIT OF A DRIVE AND I WASN'T GETTING ANYWHERE WITH THE COMPLAINTS. AT 86,000 MILES, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO AN ACURA DEALERSHIP. THEY SERVICED THE CAR AND RESET IT. LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN 3 WEEKS LATER. IT NEEDS A NEW CATALYTIC CONVERTER @$1,100. BOUGHT HONDA CARE EXTENDED WARRANTY AT DEALER WITH CAR, BUT IT DOESN'T COVER THE PART. HONDA IS TELLING ME THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE HONDA CARE WARRANTY IS NOT A HONDA WARRANTY, BUT 3RD PARTY AND THEY DON'T CONTROL IT. I'M OUT $2,300 FOR THE USELESS WARRANTY AND APPEALING TO HONDA TO REPLACE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THERE IS A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE OIL CONSUMPTION (WHICH THE HONDA DEALER SAID IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH CR-VS) AND THE NEED FOR A NEW CATALYTIC CONVERTER AT 86,000 MILES. *TR
