Recalls and investigations

  1. Back over prevention, sensing system, cameraJul 1, 2026

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Odyssey vehicles. Water may enter into the rearview camera, which can cause the rearview camera image to fail to display when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the rearview camera, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 24, 2026. Owners may contact Honda's customer service at 1-888-234-2138. 1. Vehicle speed control, Sep 29, 2025

We purchased our 2018 Honda Odyssey in January of 2024. Since we purchased the car, it regularly hesitates from the stopped position. This regularly yet intermittently causes a safety hazard when turning right into traffic or making a left turn because the acceleration does not work and feels as if it is failing for 2-4 seconds. There is a recall with other models that are the same year and close to with similar issues however ours is not included. I have now reported it to the dealership multiple times and am told they cannot replicate it so they can't help me. I was also told that there is a lag with this engine which causes teh delay but they have no concern. This causes performance issues, and puts me in a precaious situation oten when making a left turn or trying to cross multiple lanes of traffic. This issue really needs to be fixed and covered.

  2. Electrical system, Sep 27, 2025

Like many other people on the [XXX] forums, our Honda Odyssey has a water leak that dripped onto the Tailgate Control Module, causing it to corrode and stop working. Now, our tailgate door will not open or close electrically, nor even manually using the handle outside. We have to crawl through the vehicle into the trunk, open a trim piece with a screwdriver, and stick our finger into the mechanical parts to disengage the latch to allow the door to open. Safety issues: 1) It's hard to know whether the door is fully closed and latched, so it could pop open while driving. 2) In the event of a car crash or other emergency, we may need to rely on that tailgate door being operational, so it being jammed by a widespread and known problem seems like a predictable life threatening issue. Links to some of the forum threads where other people report the exact same issue: [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  3. Electrical system, Sep 25, 2025

D passenger side, rear electric door get stuck a lot of times and open by itself. When you close it , it goes all the way till get close to the end then open as it there is something it try not to close on . This being going for the last 2 to 3 years.

  4. Engine and engine cooling, Sep 25, 2025

The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while parked on the shoulder of a busy interstate, the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was later towed to the local mechanic who diagnosed that the rod bearings had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V751000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 100,000.

  6. Forward collision avoidance, Lane departure, Sep 23, 2025

The Monocular front window camera is malfunctioning. This front window camera controls the following safety features: -Lane Keep Assist (LKAS) -Collision Mitigation -Adaptive Cruise control -Lane Departure Mitigation -Rain sensor windshield wipes -Auto High beam -Automatic Emergency Braking In addition to compromising these safety features when the camera fails, false warnings are repeatedly provided on the dash of the Vehicle, sometimes in a singular and sometimes in a cyclic manner.

  7. Service brakes, Forward collision avoidance, Sep 20, 2025, crash

I was involved in an accident with with my family. Pregnant wife and daughter. I got into a front end collision and I was at fault. The forward collision warning didn’t activate, Neither did the automatic emergency braking. This system has never failed on me and car has always stopped every time..

  8. Suspension, Vehicle speed control, Sep 19, 2025

Multiple warnings occurred simultaneously when I started my car I been doing a research on the web I found out that many buyers have the same problem with their van's and already reported here is the list that found 2018 2019 2020 Honda Odyssey Touring and EX-L , I found out that the camera/sensor in the windshield (near the rearview mirror). It needed to be replaced. their camera has an internal failure!!! This needs to be recalled

  9. Lane departure, Forward collision avoidance, Sep 15, 2025

On September 1, 2025 the front windshield camera on my 2018 Honda Odyssey failed, part #36160-THR-A03-M1, resulting in the loss of many of my vehicle’s safety features including: adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and lane keep assistance. The camera is available for inspection. Now when I start the vehicle it displays warnings that none of the above safety features are functional. I contacted 2 local Honda dealers, Bellingham Honda and Burlington Honda in Washington State. Both dealers said they could not fix my car since the camera is not available, since it is not in stock and on national back order, with no date of when a new camera would be be available. I have also contacted 2 online Honda parts distributors and they also say the camera is in national back order and not available, with no date of when it would be available. The result is that my vehicle has most of it’s safety systems inoperable and it can not be repaired, since a new camera is not available, and Honda cannot provide me a date when the part is available and my vehicle can be fixed. I see on the internet the front camera failure is a common occurrence in 2018 Honda Odyssey’s and request NHTSA investigate make Honda recall these vehicles to fix the safety problem.

  10. Forward collision avoidance, Sep 13, 2025

Multipurpose camera behind the front windshield was inspected by Honda dealership. They were able to verify it had a fault and needed to be replaced at a cost of around $1700. This camera controls many of the safety features this van advertises such as the the Lane Keep Assist and Collision Mitigation. While researching online, I was able to find multiple owners of the 2018-2019 Honda Odyssey that have had this same issue. Ebay has recently sold 3 of these cameras that have been salvaged from donors. This is an ongoing issue that Honda has not rectified. I believe this should absolutely be recalled.

  11. Power train, Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Sep 12, 2025

On [XXX], while driving in traffic, my 2018 Honda Odyssey suddenly and without warning shifted itself into Park. The vehicle slammed to a stop in the middle of an intersection, stranding my family and creating a serious risk of collision and injury. The vehicle would not move afterward and had to be towed from the scene. After the failure, the dashboard displayed multiple warnings: “Transmission Problem,” “Stop Driving When Safe,” “Emission System Problem,” and *“Blind Spot Information System Problem.” The gear shift indicator also blinked. The Odyssey has remained undrivable since the incident. The vehicle is at Stockton 12 Honda in Sandy, Utah, where the dealer confirmed a hard transmission failure (RO #[XXX]). Honda Corporate opened two cases (#[XXX] and #[XXX]). Despite my repeated calls and emails, Honda’s assigned case manager verbally denied coverage on Sept 12, 2025, stating the denial would only be reflected in Honda’s internal case notes. This failure is identical to the defect described in NHTSA Recall 19V-299, in which the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) can reboot due to low voltage and cause the transmission to shift into Park while driving. Although my VIN is not currently flagged, my Odyssey EX-L uses the same ZF 9-speed transmission and TCU as affected trims. I have a tow record, witnesses, and video evidence documenting the event. The vehicle remains disabled, leaving my family without safe transportation. This is a serious safety defect that should require investigation and expansion of the existing recall. 12. Engine, Sep 12, 2025

I have a 2018 Honda Odyssey, with 66,855 miles. I maintain my vehicle with regularity at my Honda dealership. On [XXX], I was driving home from Las Vegas, NV to Pasadena, CA, when near the state line at Primm, NV, I started hear sounds from my engine and it started losing power. I had to pull over and then had my van towed to a dealership in Las Vegas, NV. The van is available for inspection. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer where i paid for a diagnosis to be performed. The engine light did turn on prior to me noticing the engine problem and a low oil light came on later. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  13. Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 9, 2025

The vehicle would not accelerate while merging onto Interstate and it made a grinding sound. It hesitated for about 5 seconds and was able to finally pick up speed and merge. It is very scary when my vehicle does this.

  14. Other or unspecified, Sep 8, 2025

The Auto Engine Idle Stop causes the car to die while at stop lights, stop signs, in the middle of intersections. Etc. when disengaging the AIS the engine stutters and then displays “Shift to Park” then it says to push the brake to start the car but it doesn’t always start up. Sometimes it requires opening the door. Sometimes the collision mitigation system turns off after as well. And the entertainment display turns off or says “No Audio”

  15. Engine, Sep 8, 2025

My Van has only 110,000 miles on it. Yesterday I was driving my family home from a sports event my wife myself and my four kids. I got a flashing check engine light and was able to pull over, but it was an unsafe area on the side of the interstate. After sitting there for a while. we were able to get the vehicle to Honda. Honda is telling me that it is bad rod bearings. But that my vehicle falls outside of the recall that is already issued for bad rod bearings in a van that is the same year as mine. This rod bearing issue put myself and my kids in an unsafe position.

  16. Engine, Sep 8, 2025

My 2018 Honda Odyssey (VIN: [XXX]) experienced a catastrophic engine failure due to a spun connecting rod bearing in Cylinder 4. While driving, the engine suddenly began making a loud knocking/tapping noise. I immediately drove the vehicle to the Honda dealer, and as I was pulling into the service bay, the engine completely seized. The dealer confirmed that the engine suffered a spun bearing in Cylinder 4, with severe crankshaft and connecting rod damage. The failed parts and metal debris in the oil system are available for inspection if requested. This failure occurred without any prior warning lights, messages, or check engine indicators. There was no advance notice other than the sudden onset of knocking just before failure. The defect caused loss of engine power and risk of stalling in traffic, which could have easily resulted in a crash or fire. This type of failure is consistent with Honda Recall 23V-751, which covers connecting rod bearing defects caused by crankshaft machining errors, and also matches the ongoing NHTSA investigation into premature rod bearing failures in Honda Odyssey and other models. However, my VIN is currently excluded from the recall. I request that NHTSA review this case as potential evidence that the recall should be expanded to include additional Odyssey vehicles. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  17. Other or unspecified, Sep 6, 2025

The Foward Looking Camera is failing and causing all the ADAS not to work and has all the lights on the dash. The code comes back as U3000-49 which is a multi purpose camera failure.

  18. Engine, Sep 5, 2025

I have maintained 2018 Honda Odyssey regularly, getting it serviced when or before it was due. A month ago (at 90K) miles, we started to hear a noise in the engine. I took it to Honda and they said that I need an entirely new (rebuilt) engine. I did see there was a safety recall report 23V-751 regarding crank pins that were produced out of specification. This did cover some 2018 Honda engines, but my VIN was not one of them. Is there any possibility that this deffect could have effected other Honda engines of the same year? My engine should not be failing at 7 years and 90k miles. Currently the vehicle is not being driven until we figure out the best course of action.

2018 Honda Odyssey gear shifting switch letters are rubbing off. This caused the drive to click wrong button as they do not have letters to identify the functionality of the each button. This can cause accidents. I see many online forums customers are discussing the same issue. [XXX] [XXX] / [XXX] [XXX] This is manufacture defect and please be kind to investigate it. The throttle can loose power at stop and then suddenly engine picks up the throttle which not normal and this is not maintenance issue as service station and Honda does not confirm the behavior a defect or a problem. This is very concerning.

The engine stalled while driving the 2018 Honda Odyssey van on the freeway. It happened while cruising on the freeway. Engine suddenly locked out/stalled after a loud 'thug' sound. The situation posed a high safety risk to the occupants. Luckily no vehicular accident occurred. The dealer checked it out and confirmed it is an engine problem. Their recommendation is to change the engine and charged the cost to the owner. Dealer said the problem is not covered by recall. Dealer will not specify the engine problem unless the engine is opened for inspection. There were no warning lamps and messages of the problem prior to the failure.

  22. Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 2, 2025, crash

I bought my van used in March of 2025. within 6 weeks I noticed when accelerating my van hesitated about 3 seconds before going when I went to take-off. This has caused great concern . Last week it caused me a accident because of the delay in acceleration. Luckily I was not hurt but did cause a accident. I feel they're should be a recall to fix this after reading many complaints about the same issue.

UNKNOWN, though others who have reported this problem are saying the front camera and it's calibration are at fault. Currently, 5 systems (3 reported + 2 more) are under warning on my vehicle due to this unknown issue and the dealership wants a ridiculous amount of money to fix even though it appears to be very common and frequent as these vehicles get more and more miles on them.

Fuel pump failed. Other Honda Odyssey's of same year had a fuel pump recall. This particular VIN was not included but failed in a similar manner. We were required to pay out of pocket to repair. NHTSA RECALL NUMBER:23V-858

The sliding doors will not open at intermittent times. Warnings will flash off and on about door error but not consistently. If there is an incident or an emergency, the door will not open. If there were an accident and the driver cannot turn off the power door switch then anyone in the back cannot get the door to open, they would be trapped. We have had one motor replaced already. We opted to do that because we had a newborn on that side and we needed to be able to get to her quickly if she needed us and we were unable to rely on that door. The other door is doing it as well.
