Representative owner complaints: engine

141 reports, newest first. Show all

  1. Engine, Sep 23, 2026

I am reporting a severe engine issue on my 2019 Honda Odyssey that matches the exact failure profile of NHTSA Recall 23V-751 and the ongoing investigation PE25008 / RQ24-013. While driving, the vehicle randomly began experiencing a loud, progressive metallic knocking and ticking noise from the engine, sometimes it was a squeal, the engine stalled while in motion and wouldn't drive anymore. This presents a severe safety hazard, as an unexpected engine stall or failure while driving increases the risk of a crash. My VIN currently shows as "excluded" from Recall 23V-751. However, given that this vehicle has the exact same 3.5L V6 engine and is exhibiting the textbook symptoms of premature connecting rod bearing wear and crankshaft-related failure, I request that the NHTSA review this case to expand the recall parameters to include my vehicle batch.

  2. Engine, Sep 15, 2026

My wife was driving our young daughters and the vehicle had multiple warning lights come on. then several messages stated transmission drive unavailable. then the vehicle stopped moving and stalled in a busy street. it would re-start but was idling at 3000rpm. however it would not move from where it died. it had to be towed to the Honda dealer. It was a very dangerous situation because it went from a check engine light to a dead vehicle in 30 seconds. very unsafe!

  3. Power train, Other or unspecified, Engine, Sep 13, 2026

Vehicle began to misfire on cylinder 3. As the issue continued more cylinders stared to misfire. Next was number 6, then 2 increased up the engine. Air fuel ratio was 1.6. Assuming it was fuel/air/electrical in nature, the spark plugs, and fuel injector were changed and air intake and upper valves were cleaned of carbon build up. All gaskets replaced by new. Discovered and replaced a bad egr valve. Last codes that the car displayed before towing to dealer were many misfire codes and 2 engine/transmission communication errors. Dealer shop discovered air fuel ratio of 1.35 and checked all work before. Discovered fuel pooling and some shiny areas in the engine from scoping it. Decided that if was a bad engine with internal failure and transmission. Quoted me 17000 (about the same value as the vehicle if it was jn very good condition) for a new engine and transmission or 6800 for a used engine alone at risk of replacing transmission as well assuming communication errors do not go way or transmission fails further. I have called honda corporate my reference # 16624114. I requested goodwill repair due to recalls and class action lawsuits related to connecting rods in engines of similar cars and model years. And transmissions recalls for similar cars and model years. Goodwill is unlikely but pending.

  4. Engine, Aug 26, 2026

When I am sitting at a traffic light and the auto engine idle stop gauges it very frequently completely shuts off the engine and will not restart. I will hit the power button to try and turn the vehicle back on, but it won’t work. I have to put the car into park, completely turn off the car battery, open the car door, while sitting in the middle of traffic, and then shut the car door and restart the car. If I do not open the car door, I cannot restart the car. I have taken this into Honda twice to have an evaluated and they “cannot find“ the problem despite their being a bulletin out specifically about this problem. It is now shutting off on me three and four times in a single trip. I was almost in an accident trying to restart my car when a light turned green and I couldn’t get my vehicle to restart as all the cars around me went. This has been an ongoing problem for years.

  5. Electrical system, Vehicle speed control, Engine, Aug 21, 2026

I'm filing a formal safety complaint regarding my 2019 Honda Odyssey, VIN [XXX], & requesting an engineering-level review by American Honda. I've brought this vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer numerous times for recurring & increasingly serious electrical, engine/power-loss, & transmission problems. Despite thousands of dollars in repairs, the problems continue. The vehicle has unexpectedly shut off/lost power; the power sliding doors have failed & required manual opening; low-battery warnings have appeared; & the radio/infotainment system repeatedly loses power and resets. I have photographs showing the message: “Anti Theft System–This system has lost power.” More seriously, the vehicle has malfunctioned in Park, Reverse, while shifting into Drive, & while turning. Most recently, the transmission would not engage properly and the vehicle had to be shut off and restarted multiple times before it would go into Drive. Delray Honda documented this transmission failure/no-drive incident on its August 2026 repair order. In May 2026, I brought the vehicle to Delray Honda for a Check Engine Management System warning. Repairs were performed, but the warning returned within days. Delray Honda then replaced the power distribution module, costing me approximately $2,000. I've spent thousands more dollars addressing these recurring problems without resolution. I understand Honda/NHTSA Recall 19V-299 involved certain 2018–2019 Odysseys and a loss of power to the Transmission Control Unit. My Odyssey appears to have been manufactured around the time of those Hondas that were covered by that recall. I'm not claiming without diagnosis that the defect is identical, but the similarity of the symptoms warrants an urgent investigation. I request that Honda open a formal safety case, review my complete service history, DTCs and TCM/PCM data, determine whether my vehicle has the same or a related defect, and review my prior repair costs for reimbursement. Thank you. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  6. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 15, 2026

When driving the vehicle it always has a lag in acceleration when pressing on the gas pedal. There are numerous times I can press the gas pedal and the car will not move. I've taken back to the dealer to see what their service department says.

  7. Engine, Aug 5, 2026

Hello, my 2019 Odyssey 3.5L V6 engine has a severe knocking noise/engine failure identical to Recall 23V-751, but my VIN was excluded. The car has only 81,100 miles and started the knocking out of no where a week ago. I had an independant mechanic take a look at it and he said the same thing that it was the connecting rod bearing and the knock was coming from the engine. I dont think it is fair that I should be held liable for an engine repair that is a factory fault and just becuase my vin number is not inlcuded. The vehicles oil was also just changed at the dealership prior to the knock starting. Please have this strongly considered to have HONDA cover this repair.

  8. Engine, Aug 4, 2026

The contact owns a 2019 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving 30 MPH, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the cylinder #6 rod bearing was damaged, and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 123,000.

  9. Engine, Aug 4, 2026

The connecting rod bearings failed, resulting in engine damage. The failed bearings, crankshaft, and oil pan debris have been retained and are available for inspection on request. The vehicle developed a loud ticking noise from the engine. A Honda dealer initially diagnosed the noise as coming from the timing belt tensioner and replaced the timing belt and tensioner. The noise was unchanged after that repair. The dealer then traced the noise to the bottom end of the engine and performed a teardown on 07/16/2026, which confirmed connecting rod bearing failure with significant metallic debris throughout the oil pan. The dealer documented the failure with photographs. The engine is not driveable. The problem has therefore been confirmed by an authorized dealer through disassembly. The manufacturer has been notified but has not physically inspected the engine. There has been no police or insurance involvement. Warning symptoms: an audible ticking noise from the engine was the only symptom. No warning lamps, dashboard messages, or other indications appeared at any point before or during the failure. Safety: this failure mode is the subject of NHTSA Preliminary Evaluation PE25008, opened 08/20/2025, covering connecting rod bearing failures leading to complete engine failure in the 3.5L V6, including MY2018-2020 Odyssey. It is also the failure mode described in Recall 23V-751, which states that engine failure may cause loss of motive power and increase the risk of crash and fire. My vehicle falls outside that recall's build range and the manufacturer has declined coverage on that basis. Had the bearing seized while driving rather than being found during shop diagnosis, the engine could have lost power or stalled without warning. This vehicle carries family passengers on highways. No crash, fire, or injury occurred.

With a 103,000 on the dash, engine experienced signs on slowing, check engine, abs, adaptive cruise, and steering faults amongst others . No lights prior to the bearing failing. The engine experienced rod bearing failure and left use stranded on the side of the highway. All maintenance was performed at dealership, towed back to dealership where upon inspection rod bearing completely fell apart. Vehicle is still at dealership where a 14,000 dollar engine was quoted.

While driving the engine unexpectedly, it was having problems going over certain RPMs. It sounded very loud.. brought it into Honda of Denton, Texas. They examined it and said there was metal shards in my oil in my engine that something was broken. I needed a complete new engine.. 2019 Honda has a bearing recall for the engine when it fails it causes metal shards in the engine. They told me that my Vin was not covered in this recall, and they could not repair it even though this exactly what has failed in my engine..

While driving my 2019 Honda Odyssey at highway speeds on the 60 freeway, the vehicle experienced a sudden and total engine failure/stall without prior warning. I had all my kids in the car as well. CHP advised to call Honda The sudden stalling resulted in an immediate loss of engine power, creating an unsafe scenario on a high-speed freeway. I was forced to navigate the vehicle across traffic lanes to pull over onto the shoulder safely.

My 2019 Honda Odyssey stalled at a red light, then had an extended crank/no-start. It later hesitated and almost stalled while driving around 40 mph, and stalled again when I got home. The dash showed Emissions System Problem along with VSA, EPS, Brake System, Brake Hold, Hill Start Assist, and Road Departure warnings. Please check open recalls, especially the fuel pump recall, scan all stored and pending codes, test battery and alternator, and check fuel pressure and fuel pressure leak-down.

BELIEVE CAMERA SENSOR IN WINDSHIELD OR BEHIND HONDA EMBLEM CAUSING ISSUES WITH 2019 EX-L MODEL/ CAR WILL POP UP 8 DIFFERENT CODES ENDING WITH "TRANSMISSION SYSTEM PROBLEM" MAKING VEHICLE UNABLE TO OPERATE. IN ADDITION TO TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, IT ALSO TURNS OFF ALL SAFETY FEATURES IN VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AS WELL. CAN WE PLEASE GET THIS RECALLED AND FIXED??

The vehicle engine developed a rod knock at around 105,000 miles. Failing connecting rod bearing(s) has been diagnosed as the source of the sound by several different mechanics independently, including the Honda dealership, and engine replacement has been recommended. This first occurred while I was away for an extended period on military orders. My wife, not realizing what the sound was, continued driving on it for 1-2 weeks. Fortunately, no accident occurred, but at any moment the engine could have seized, causing serious bodily harm or death. Leading up to this issue, there had never been any check engine lights, low oil or low oil pressure warnings, or any such notifications that this issue was developing. Oil changes were performed regularly without any concerning oil quality findings. There is a known connecting rod/bearing safety recall involving my make, model, year of vehicle, but Honda is telling me the manufacturing date is not applicable. Despite my formal requests, Honda has been unwilling to acknowledge and help rectify the issue. I submit that the defect in manufacturing is more widespread than they are owning up to.

I was driving on a highway and all of a sudden, I see three warnings appearing on my dashboard - "Emission System Problem", "Blind Spot Info System Problem", "Transmission System Problem". I continued driving but then my vehicle started behaving weird. It started shaking while driving. Luckily, I was close to my exit and l somehow managed to take the exit but I wasn't able to move forward when the road was uphill. I somehow managed to park next to a house and walked back home. It was a really scare drive from the time those errors showed up to when I parked. This all happened few minutes ago. Here below is a thread where I can see others having this problem. 18. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Engine, May 31, 2026

The vehicle is experiencing a dangerous hesitation during acceleration at low speeds, immediately followed by a sudden, violent forward lunging motion. When attempting to accelerate from a complete stop, or when rolling at low speeds (such as yielding at a roundabout, turning through an intersection, or merging into slow-moving traffic), the vehicle suffers from a distinct **lag or complete failure to accelerate** for several critical seconds. In an attempt to get the vehicle to move out of harm's way, the driver naturally applies more pressure to the gas pedal. The vehicle's transmission then randomly responds after a few seconds with a violent lunge forward, spinning the tires and causing the vehicle to surge unpredictably. This unpredictable behavior creates an immediate and severe safety risk to the occupants of my vehicle and others on the road: 1. Intersection Collisions: The sudden lag leaves the vehicle stranded in oncoming traffic during turns, while the subsequent lunge threatens to overshoot the intended lane. 2. Pedestrian Hazards: The sudden, uncontrollable lunging makes low-speed maneuvers in school zones, crosswalks, and parking lots incredibly hazardous. 3. Drivers behind behind me do not expect a vehicle to suddenly stop accelerating after it has begun to move forward. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership we're we were able to reproduce the issue and Honda would not offer a fix. I thought I was going to get my entire family killed the other day when I pulled out at a stop the van hesitated in the middle of the highway for a few seconds before lunging forward. This is an intermittent issueand the severity varies each time, but is commonly cited online.

Car did it’s normal automatic shut off while stopped at red light but then did not automatically restart when I took my foot off the brake. I couldn’t get it to start or turn off. I was just sitting with a dead car in the middle of traffic. It was still on but totally unresponsive! I called 911 but before they arrived I managed to get the car to turn off and then restart. ??

On May 2nd, we drove our 2019 Honda Odyssey XL-E to church, and as soon as we pulled into the parking lot, we started to see smoke coming from our front hood. We exited the car. Within 30 seconds, the car then went into flames, and exploded and the car is now unsalvageable. When I went online, it seems like this is a common occurrence with these Honda Odysseys. There were no warming lamps, messages, or lights that would have alerted me that something this serious would occur. We have taken our care to Honda for years for regular maintenance. We don't take it to any independent shops. Strictly to Honda for years. The most recent checkup/service was performed on February 11, 2026 where they performed the following services which they had recommended. 1) Oil Change 2)Engine coolant flush with conditioner 3)Transmission fluid change: 4) wheel alignment 5)Fuel tank additive, throttle body service, and injector. This is serious safety event and our family and children could have been killed in this accident. We have pictures, videos, police report, and the car has been taken to a salvage yard. We have filed a claim with State Farm.

Engine failure. Not available for inspection. Engine replaced and damaged engine return for core charge. While driving on the highway, without any for warning, engine stalled, loss of power and dash read “emissions system problem “. Vehicle was towed to Honda of Denton for diagnostic testing. The engine stalling and loss of power at highway speeds caused a great risk for my family in the van. We impeded traffic and could have caused an accident. There were no warning lights and/or engine system issues leading up to the engine failure. Honda stated that it’s is a common issue with the internal engine bearing failure. They also confirmed that my VIN is not listed on the recall list for the 2 million engines effected. Honda quoted a LKQ engine replacement. Declined and had replacement done at Caliber Collison.

[Incident Description & Manufacturer's Bad Faith] On April 6, 2026, an authorized Honda dealership (McConnell Honda in Montgomery, AL) diagnosed my vehicle (2019 Honda Odyssey EX-L, 143,097 miles) with DTC P219A (Rec replacing fuel injector set and fuel feed pipe at this time), requiring a fuel injector replacement. This exact mechanical failure is documented in Honda’s official Service Bulletin 21-010. The bulletin acknowledges that defective fuel injectors can cause engine misfires, loss of motive power, and engine stalling while driving. These conditions present an immediate and severe safety hazard. Honda established a 150,000-mile warranty extension limit for this defect in TSB 21-010. My vehicle has 143,097 miles and is well within this limit. However, American Honda Corporation has arbitrarily refused to repair the vehicle. Furthermore, on April 21, 2026, the assigned Honda Case Manager left a voicemail officially denying the repair. He explicitly refused my repeated requests to provide this denial in writing. In the voicemail, he falsely stated that my vehicle at 143,000 miles is "well outside the range" for assistance, directly contradicting Honda's own written 150,000-mile bulletin. Please review the attached documents, including the official dealership diagnostic report (DTC P219A), the repair estimate, and a copy of TSB 21-010. I have also secured the audio recording of the case manager's voicemail to prove their bad faith. Honda is knowingly leaving a dangerous vehicle with a confirmed, documented fuel system defect on the road, while actively providing false information to the consumer to avoid repair costs. I strongly request the NHTSA to investigate Honda's deceptive and dangerous practice.

The contact owns a 2019 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while stopped at a stop light, the Auto START/STOP feature malfunctioned, and the engine failed to immediately restart after depressing the brake pedal. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. On one occasion, the engine failed to restart, and the vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with transmission control module failure. The contact was informed that the TCM needed to be replaced. The transmission control module was replaced, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed of NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the investigation. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000.

I was driving to work on April 7th, 2026 and parked the vehicle at my company parking lot. Prior to parking, I noticed unusual smell and then parked the vehicle. I parked the vehicle around 8.10 am and I got the call from my facilities manager around 8.30-8.40 am that my car caught on fire and by that time I noticed Houston Fire Department extinguishing the fire. There were no check engine sign and this vehicle is a brand new vehicle when I purchased. Though there is no recall associated with my VIN #, the fire issue is similar to recalls for 2019 Honda Odysey. The recall numbers are 23V-751( Engine Fire Recall) & 20V-066 ( Electrical Wiring fire Recall)
