Recalls and investigations

  1. Back over prevention, sensing system, cameraNov 21, 2024

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Santa Fe HEV, Elantra, Elantra HEV and 2022 Elantra N and Santa Fe PHEV vehicles. Due to a damaged printed circuit board, the rearview camera image may fail to display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's visibility and increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the rearview camera, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 14, 2025. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 271.

  2. Trailer hitchesPark outsideMar 17, 2023

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2023 Santa Fe, 2021-2023 Santa Fe HEV, 2022-2023 Santa Fe Plug-in HEV and Santa Cruz vehicles potentially equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Hyundai dealership. Water accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the remedy is completed. Dealers will install a new fuse and wire extension kit as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed starting May 16, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 244. This recall is an expansion of previous recall number 22V-633.

  3. Power train, automatic transmissionOct 6, 2022

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Sonata, Veloster N, 2022 Santa Cruz, Elantra N, and Kona N vehicles. The vehicle's "fail-safe" limited-mobility drive mode may be impaired, when prompted by a transmission oil pump malfunction, which can result in a complete loss of drive power.

Loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and replace the transmission, as necessary. Dealers will also update the transmission control unit software. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 10, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 236.

  4. Engine and engine cooling, engine, gasoline, turbo/superchargerMar 28, 2022

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2022 Santa Fe and Santa Cruz vehicles. The oil supply pipe to the turbocharger may crack, which could result in an oil leak in the engine compartment.

An oil leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components, can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will replace the turbocharger oil supply pipe, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 26, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall 222.

Representative owner complaints

199 reports, newest first.

  1. Power train, May 4, 2025

A shifter malfunction error appears on dash. When trying switch into any gear it, the dashboard and front headlights flash. When I was parking, I put the car in park, the dash said park however the car kept moving and I almost collided into car in front of me. Another incident happened the same day when I could put the car in reverse from drive. I couldn’t turn the car off. Eventually I was able to turn it off but I had to put the emergency brakes on to keep car from moving. The error will appear when driving which is scary. The check engine light will appear sometimes. The car is scheduled for service on May 7th at Empire Hyundai of New Rochelle.

  2. Other or unspecified, May 1, 2025

The car horn failed to work when I went to use it around April 20, 2025. I first noticed it while stopped at a traffic light and the car in front of me failed to advance for several seconds at the green light. Then I noticed a car drifting over the line in oncoming traffic and was unable to use the horn to alert the driver. As I drive with my toddler granddaughter in the car, I needed the vehicle fixed ASAP. My independent car mechanic had to replace 2 horns (Hi tone Horn and Lo Tone Horn). Today I came to know of a Hyundai Forum and did a search on car horns. Apparently, this is a known failure for many years. Some owners have had the horn replaced as many as 3 times. I since have requested reimbursement from Hyundai, but they refused because I didn't take it to a Hyundai dealership. There were no warning lamps or messages.

  3. Vehicle speed control, Forward collision avoidance, Apr 27, 2025

I was driving at approximately 65 MPH using the advanced cruise control system. Randomly, the system disengaged and I started getting 2 MIL warnings on my console. MIL warning 1) was "Check Forward Safety System" and 2) warning the advanced cruise control parameters are not met due to warning 1. A few minutes later, I received a message on my Hyundai Blue Link app showing DTC C162078. After researching this DTC, I found that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of other drivers that experienced this same/similar situation -- unexpected loss of advanced safety features and smart cruise control features. In fact, Hyundai published a technical bulletin for another model with the same issue. The loss of these functions places an unexpected safety risk to the driver if this issue occurs when there is other traffic present. My vehicle was involved in a frontal accident once about 1.5 years ago and this issue has never occurred. This is the first instance of this issue since I purchased the vehicle brand new from the dealer.

  4. Power train, Apr 17, 2025

When shifting gears whether from parking to drive or from drive to park, the vehicle lags and makes a juttering noise. I am unable to move from the gear it is juttering in unless i turn the car off or hope that pushing the button turns it off. Whist it is juttering, it sounds as if the car is turning on and off repeatedly. This also has happened from the auto stop when trying to accelerate after stopping at a light and it get stuck and unable to move without me turning the car off and turning it back on. This is a safety issue since I was in the middle of a road, and I essentially have no control over what my car does. I have taken my car to Patrick Hyundai in Schaumburg, IL multiple times and they do nothing about it since they "don't see it happening whilst it is there". I have videos of it and they still do nothing.

  5. Electrical system, Back over prevention, Apr 8, 2025

The reverse camera system did not come on when reversing. It could lead to someone like a child getting hurt if they’re walking behind the vehicle. The problem was reproduced by the dealer and serviced for this issue. They confirmed it was the same problem as the recall. There is a recall for 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe’s that were manufactured in the Alabama plant. This is where my car was manufactured. For some reason, it was not included in the VINs that were recalled.

  6. Vehicle speed control, Mar 17, 2025

Vehicle would not shift when accelerating on gas pedal while driving, rpm’s went up to 5,000. Had the car towed to closest dealership and they haven’t looked at it. They stated they are unable to assist me with a rental car. I am home alone with 2 children and cannot go to work. There is a transmission recall on the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe with the exact problems the car has been having. Recall #236, campaign #22V746000. I called the recall consequences customer service # and they stated they were unable to help me until the dealership looked at it. The problem started in fall of 2024 and I took it into the dealership first on 11/5/24 and again when it continued the problem 11/14/24. The 11/14/24 visit they performed a software update and the car shifted smoother in Smart Drive Mode only. On Friday, 3/14/25, while driving home from work, the car would not shift at all when pressed the gas turning into traffic. I turned on my hazard lights and pulled into a parking lot. I called roadside assistance and had the vehicle towed to the dealership.

  7. Other or unspecified, Mar 2, 2025

The horn on this. vehicle has been replaced 4 times in 2.5 years. It has failed and on three occasions I nearly hit a pedestrian and other vehicles. I asked my service representative, John King, of Lia Hyundai in Albany NY if there is a recall on this issue. He said no. I researched this problem and found that this is a widespread problem with Hyundai. I feel strongly that eventually someone will be seriously injured or worse in Hyundai does not recognize this problem.

  8. Other or unspecified, Feb 5, 2025

I attempted to sound the horn and it failed to sound. I have experienced this problem 2 times previously. The dealer replaced it the 1st time when the vehicle had about 18000 miles. The 2nd time they did not even note it on a service report but when the vehicle was returned to me after an oil change it was working. I contacted the dealer this time because the vehicle is no longer in warranty and requested they repair the horns for free. I was told they would have to get clearance from Hyundai. I noticed that Hyundai issued a TSB 23-BE-009H for the Hyundai Venue for this same problem. The horns on the Santa Fe are mounted low behind the front bumper which subjects them to water from the road when it rains, as it does often, here in Louisiana. I am forced to drive a vehicle without a horn to warn other drivers.

  9. Other or unspecified, Feb 3, 2025

The auto start system (the gas saving feature that shuts the engine off and on when the car idles) causes the car to shut completely off. This has happened on the freeway at a traffic light and while turning into traffic. When the auto start feature is off I don’t have this problem. It’s a major safety issue and I’ve seen numerous complaints about this on Facebook

  10. Fuel/propulsion system, Feb 1, 2025

3rd time having the same engine issue where the fuel injector keeps going out. Once in February then again in April now again in Jan. The car shakes violently and unsafe to drive even when at a standstill.

  11. Other or unspecified, Jan 20, 2025

Horn has stopped working 3 times in 2 1/2 years. Replaced twice under warranty. Now out of warranty.

  12. Seats, Jan 9, 2025

When reaching between the seats to get a dropped item hand gets stuck on a sharp edge and cannot be pulled out. This happened to me once while driving and to my diluaghters very small hand while parked. Assistance was needed to dislodge hand.

  13. Other or unspecified, Jan 3, 2025

backup camera intermittently fails to display

  14. Power train, Fuel/propulsion system, Dec 29, 2024

Three fuel injectors out of four have failed in a year’s time frame. Car shakes, stalls, hesitates, and is dangerous to drive. Waiting for fourth injector to fail.

  15. Electrical system, Dec 23, 2024

The integrated thermal monitor is stuck. When I took it to Ken Vance Hyundai today, they said it is a common issue and if left unfixed. It would blow the engine.

  16. Power train, Dec 18, 2024

    See attached document for complaint.

  17. Power train, Electrical system, Dec 14, 2024

I have had to have a problem with my power teain worked on at two different Hundia dealership I am having an issue where the horn just stops blowing and that isvery dangerous. After switching off and restarting the horn will work again.

  18. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Dec 13, 2024

I have a 2022 santa fe xrt within the 1st yr of owing in 2022 the horn stopped working in the winter. Went to dealership told it was known issue they replaced it. A few months later into following year still winter went out again they fixed again stating my car has 2 horns and both failed. So far 2022 and 2023 2 times. Fast forward to earlier in 2024 beginning of year horn failed again took to dealer expressed my concern of this is a safety and inconvenience issue they apologized but no recall yet. Now it's almost 2025 and I will be taking my car back to the dealership this weekend for yet another time due to the horn not working at all. I've found out my horn has not worked due to driving and a vehicle almost colliding into my lane and went to honk horn and nothing. A separate time a person has cut out in front of me almost causing an accident and all I could do is to lock up my breaks and swerve hope they see me and don't get hit could not beep to warn them. I bought the car brand new in 2022 feb and I have had the horn replaced 4 to 5 times and they still are staying no recall this is ridiculous.

  19. Electrical system, Nov 19, 2024

The back doors should unlock when the SUV is put in park or the motor is turned off. However, it does not unlock over 25% of the time. This means the back doors can not be opened from the outside or inside. People in the back cannot get out unless the doors are manually unlocked from the control panel in the front. This is a real safety issue if there was an accident and the people are trapped in the car. This issue has been reported to the dealer for almost two years. They have not been able to fix the issue. I have reported this problem to Hyundai National Consumer Affairs (case # [XXX]) asking for their help. I ask if this falls under the lemon law since it can not be fixed and is safety issue. I was informed they could not help me. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  20. Fuel system, Gasoline, Nov 5, 2024

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed. The dealer replaced the high pressure fuel injector pipe, the Gasoline Direct Injection(GDI) fuel injector on cylinder 3, the high pressure fuel pipe, the combustion seal ring, the K bolt, and other unknown parts. The vehicle was repaired under warranty. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

  21. Vehicle speed control, Engine, Oct 5, 2024

My vehicle made 3 ringing sounds and began to decelerate from 67mph to 0 in less than 2 minutes. I had to pull over quickly to avoid getting rear ended. This incident happened twice already. I took it in to the dealer and they were not able to recreate what happened. This occurrence happened 2weeks ago.

  22. Power train, Sep 5, 2024

On [XXX] my car started having trouble accelerating at some times- just happened out of the blue while driving normally. I was almost to my destination, so I parked and when I came back out, there was a message on the car screen that there was a problem with the transmission and to have it evaluated at my convenience. I was near the dealership so I drove there and they were unable to look at the vehicle but I asked if they could at least see what was wrong and if it was OK to drive. They said the code was DTC P1C2D03 and I was probably getting a new transmission. This code also showed up in the app. The TSB for this says that when this code is on the transmission will need to be replaced. [XXX] . They didn't have any appointments for diagnostics until 8/27/24, and told me it was safe to drive. My car continued over those 10 days to hesitate while accelerating at different times while driving. I never knew if I pressed the gas if I would get correct acceleration or not, which makes turning into traffic, merging, etc. unsafe. I also had 1 incident where I was at a stop sign and got no response at all from the gas pedal. I had to turn the car off and back on to get it to go. My car has only 12,000 miles. My car has been at the dealership now for 10 days waiting on them to do the diagnostics. On day 9 they called and said all it needed was a software update of the transmission control unit software and that they performed that update, test drove it twice and it was performing as expected. When I went to pick it up, the person who drove it from the lot into the service bay got out and told me the check engine light was on and there was an error about a transmission issue on the screen. The DTC P1C2D03 code is back on per the My Hyundai app. So they kept the car again and still waiting to find out what they are going to do. 23. Vehicle speed control, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 25, 2024

Middle of May 2024 car begins to feel like it's shifting when accelerating and stopping. Nothing found by Hyundai Service Dept. Lakeland. On apx. [XXX] while driving stepped on gas pedal and felt no power. Kept pumping the pedal & car started jerking. Managed to get to light and get in left lane to turn into plaza honking horn. Car slid to a stop at entrance. On apx. [XXX] my husband was driving home and same thing happened. Managed to slide car into our driveway. Both times the car had to be towed to dealership. Two fuel injectors have been changed and when I asked them to change other two they said warranty would not allow. Worst case scenario is if this happens on the interstate traveling at 75 miles per hour. Not only could we be killed but others. Both times there was no warning lights or any other warning. The car just started jerking and lost power. It can very well cause a car to rear end us and a multiple car chain reaction hurting or worse killing others. I am filled with anxiety every time I take the car out for errands. I also saw a similar incident reported in the Better Business Bureau here in Tampa by another person. I reported my incident to Hyundai Corporation by phone and email and asked the rep to reported it to her superiors to see if they could just please let the dealership replace my other two fuel injectors & I was told they could do nothing. The dealership has told me several times the injectors must fail before they can replace. Apparently, the cost of the injectors is more than someone's life. 24. Power train, Engine, Aug 18, 2024

My vehicle has been having repeated issues within 2.5 years of my purchase. Initially it was the transmission and Hyundai service center with poor customer service kept the car for almost 20-25 days before replacing the vehicle. Now, I have picked up the vehicle for less than a week and I get another Powertrain DTC code P030100 and check engine light on. Hyundai service centers are worst in the country, very poor customer service. I have to take my caribou 100 miles away to a different service center because the in town service center wouldn’t even look at the car and says has no appointment. I have to drive the car for about 100 miles with engine light on which poses a major risk to the car and myself to even ben able to get the car service done under warranty. The company advertises best warranty in the industry but makes it hard to fix the vehicle under warranty. Please stay away from buying an Hyundai in future. Thank you.

  25. Power train, Aug 13, 2024

My vehicle transmission failed on July 9,2024. There was no warning. The dashboard lite up with a DTC warning and the car would not accelerate properly. I found there was a Recall for the vehicle but it was never sent to me. I was fortunate to be close to home and not on a highway or in a busy intersection at the time. Had I been there could have been a serious accident. My vehicle needed a new transmission which I did receive. The vehicle was only 2 years old with under 20,000 miles on it. The dealer was unable to provide a courteous car so I had to borrow a car from a friend for the week it took to fix the vehicle. Also when I purchased the vehicle on Sept. 16,2022, I was told by the dealership that I would receive courtesy oil changes for three years. The first two were free now they are telling me it was a mistake and they are not. I was forced to pay $94.00 for the oil change to get my car back from the dealership.
