Recalls and investigations

  1. EngineDec 28, 2018

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Sonata and 2013-2014 Santa Fe Sport vehicles previously repaired under recall numbers 15V-568 and 17V-226. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned, or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, allowing fuel to leak from the pipe.

A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pipe, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 1, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's recall number for this recall is 180.

  2. Seat belts, pretensionerFeb 27, 2018

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2013 Sonata and 2011-2012 Sonata Hybrid vehicles. On February 27, 2018, Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) notified NHTSA that they were recalling 154,753 model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. On April 18, 2018, Hyundai expanded the recall to include an additional 425,305 model year 2012-2013 Sonata and 2011-2012 Sonata Hybrid vehicles. In the event of a crash, the air bag control unit (ACU) may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags from deploying.

If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install an external wire filter kit, free of charge. The recall began October 15, 2018. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 174.

  3. Seat belts, pretensionerOct 4, 2017

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Sonata and 2011-2015 Sonata Hybrid vehicles previously repaired under recall campaign 17V-152. The seat belt linkages for both front seat belts may detach from the seat belt anchor pretensioners.

If the seat belt linkage detaches from the seat belt anchorage, it can not properly restrain the occupant in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will again verify the connection between the seat belt linkage and the pretensioner and additionally install a warning label to prevent future seat belt linkage detachment, free of charge. The recall began November 6, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 169.

  4. Seat belts, front, anchorageMar 8, 2017

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Sonata and 2011-2015 Sonata Hybrid vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the seat belt linkages for both front seat belts may detach from the seat belt anchor pretensioners.

In the event of a crash, if the seat belts detach from the anchor pretensioners, it can increase the risk of injury.

Hyundai will notify owners and dealers will inspect the connection between the seat belt linkages and the seat belt anchor pretensioners, repairing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 7, 2017. Owner's may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for the recall is 160.

  5. Steering, electric power assist systemApr 5, 2016

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to October 31, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) circuit board may be damaged and result in a loss of power steering assist.

With a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EPS control unit, free of charge. The recall began May 30, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9640. Hyundai's number for this recall is 143.

  6. Exterior lighting, brake lights, switchNov 16, 2015

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles. The brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate allowing the brake light switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released.

If the brake light switch plunger does not retract as it should when the brake pedal is not being pressed, the brake lights may stay illuminated preventing accurate communication to rearward following vehicles that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. Additionally, if the brake switch plunger is not retracted, then the transmission can be shifted out of PARK without depressing the brake pedal. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad with an improved part, free of charge. The recall began on January 6, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 136.

  7. Suspension, front, springs, coil springsOct 7, 2015

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011 Elantra vehicles manufactured November 12, 2010, to March 31, 2011, and Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to February 28, 2010, originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Road salt may corrode the front coil springs, possibly resulting in the coil springs fracturing.

If a front coil spring fractures, it may contact the tire, possibly puncturing it, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front coil springs, free of charge. Interim notifications were mailed on November 17, 2015. The recall began on January 6, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 133. Note: Vehicles that were previously registered in salt belt states but are currently registered elsewhere are eligible to be inspected and repaired.

  8. EngineSep 10, 2015

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to April 12, 2012 at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and equipped with either a 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engine. In the affected vehicles, metallic debris may not have been fully removed during manufacturing of the engine crankshaft. If the debris was not completely removed, oil flow may be restricted through the connecting rod bearings, causing connecting rod damage. A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine and possible engine failure.

Engine failure would result in a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace the engine assembly, as necessary, free of charge. Additionally, Hyundai Motor America will increase the warranty for the engine sub-assembly (short block) to 10 years/120,000 miles for both original and subsequent owners of 2011 and 2012 Sonatas manufactured at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama equipped with 2.0 liter and 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engines. Interim notifications were mailed to owners starting on October 8, 2015. A second notification will be mailed when parts are available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059 or by visiting www.HyundaiUSA.com/Campaign132. Hyundai's number for this recall is 132.

  9. Power train, automatic transmissionJul 18, 2014

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, through May 29, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable may detach from from the shift lever pin.

If the transmission shift cable detaches, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver parks the vehicle, despite selecting the 'PARK' position, the transmission may not be in 'PARK.' If the vehicle is not in the 'PARK' position and the parking brake is not applied, there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, repair the connection between the shift cable and shift lever, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 123.

  10. Service brakes, hydraulicJul 18, 2014

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011 Sonata vehicles manufactured from December 11, 2009, through September 1, 2010. The affected vehicles may experience a brake fluid leak from the two brake lines that connect the brake system's master cylinder to the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) due to insufficient seal between the inner brake hose and metal brake line fitting.

If the brake lines leak brake sufficient fluid, the brake warning lamp in the instrument cluster will illuminate and longer stopping distance will be required, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake hoses with a revised service part, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 122.

  11. Exterior lighting, brake lights, switchApr 1, 2013

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE STALLED. ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE DEALER GOSSETT HYUNDAI SOUTH (2660 MT MORIAH RD, MEMPHIS, TN 38115) WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. 3. Power train, Service brakes, Engine, Mar 25, 2018

I WENT TO THE NEAREST HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO GET SOME OPEN RECALLS THAT I HAD DONE AND I HAD LIKE 5 OR 6, MANY OF WHICH WERE VERY CRITICAL. I GOT A CALL NEXT DAY ASKING ME TO COME AND PICK UP MY CAR, WHICH I WAS VERY SKEPTICAL ABOUT. THEY ASKED ME TO SIGN A PAPER INDICATING THAT EVERYTHING IS DONE. I ASKED IF I CAN SPEAK TO SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS HAPPENED SO QUICKLY AND IF THERE'S ANYTHING TO WORRY ABOUT AND THEY COULDN'T CONNECT ME WITH ANYONE NEITHER DID THEY ASK FOR MY INFORMATION TO CONTACT ME WHEN THAT EXPERT IS AVAILABLE. NOW ABOUT A MONTH SINCE TAKING THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, I CHECK MY VIN ONLINE AND TO MY SURPRISE 4 OF THE MOST CRITICAL OPEN RECALLS ARE STILL NOT CLOSED OR REMEDIED. THEY INVOLVE PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, SEATBELT, AND BRAKE PEDAL. THERE ARE ALL ISSUES THAT COULD RESULT IN A FATAL ACCIDENT. I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT TO DO BECAUSE THIS IS A MATTER OF HONESTY. I SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO CHECK FOR THEM TO BEGIN WITH. THIS HYUNDAI DEALER IS SUNBURY MOTORS HYUNDAI.

  4. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Engine, Jan 22, 2018

OVER THE LAST MONTH OR SO, MY CAR HAS BEEN LOSING POWER WHILE DRIVING. IT STARTED HAPPENING RANDOMLY ON THE HIGHWAY AND I DECIDED TO TAKE INTO DEALERSHIP TO DISABLES THE ISSUE. AFTER A DIAGNOSTIC TEST, IT WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE PCM. AFTER REPLACING THE PCM, I NOW HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS LOSS OF POWER EVEN WHILE DRIVING ON SIDE STREETS AND OFF HIGHWAY. I HAVE SINCE BEEN BACK TO THIS SAME DEALERSHIP LOCATED IN NEW LONDON CT AND HAVE BEEN GIVEN ANOTHER POSSIBLE CAUSE FOR THIS ISSUE AND THAT IS THE MOTOR. I AM EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED AND UPSET BC NOT ONLY DID I SPEND 1500 TO FIX THE PROBLEM, THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIXED AND IS ACTUALLY WORSE. I HAVE READ SEVERAL FORUMS THAT INDICATE A SAFETY RECALL ON MY MOTOR HOWEVER IT SEEMS AS THOUGH MY CAR IS OUTSIDE OF THE PARAMETERS THAT COVER MY MOTOR. PLEASE GET BACK TO ME WITH ANY ADVICE OR SUGGESTIONS IN GOING ABOUT RESOLVING THIS SAFETY ISSUE.

  5. Power train, Engine, Dec 1, 2017

I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND AS SOON AS I GOT OFF I HEARD A KNOCKING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE SO I LOOKED IT UP ON THE INTERNET AND IT SAID THEIR IS A RECALL ON THE ENGINE FOR THAT VERY PROBLEM

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE THE CONTACT'S DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE SPUTTERED, MADE A KNOCKING NOISE, AND LOST POWER. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO SOUTHERN STATES SUBARU OF RALEIGH (2511 WAKE FOREST RD, RALEIGH, NC 27608 (888) 439-5154) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A FAULTY ENGINE THAT NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V568000 (ENGINE). UPON RETRIEVING THE VEHICLE FROM THE DEALER, A CLICKING SOUND WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN AND UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT OF A RECALL FOR THE STEERING COUPLER, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS OVER THE MILEAGE AND COULD NOT BE REPAIRED PER THE MANUFACTURER RECALL. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V190000 (STEERING), BUT WAS UNSURE IF THE RECALL WAS SERVICED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND REFFERED THE CONTACT TO HYUNDAI AWARDS TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER INQUIRED OF AN ESTIMATE OF THE REPAIRS. WITHOUT AN ESTIMATE, THE CONTACT QUOATED $500. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO JOHNSON HYUNDAI OF CARY (5000 OLD RALEIGH RD, CARY, NC 27511(919) 439-2059) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A STEERING COUPLER AND AXLE FAILURE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE AXLE DAMAGE OCCURRED AT THE TIME OF THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AGAIN WITH A MORE ACCURATE REPAIR COST OF $800, AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY PAY $500 TOWARDS THE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,043.

TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP FOR ENGINE RECALL CHECK IN 2016, WAS TOLD MY CAR WAS FINE ONLY TO HAVE THE ENGINE SEIZE 12 MONTHS LATER WHILE DRIVING. ENGINE WAS REPLACED BY NORTHTOWNE HYUNDAI IN KC, MO AND CAR WAS RETURNED AFTER 7 WEEKS. WITHIN A FEW DAYS OF DRIVING WITH THE NEW ENGINE I HEARD A DISTINCT WHINING AT ABOUT 2500 RPM AND NOTICED A STEADY LEAK DUE TO SPOTS ON MY DRIVEWAY. I RETURNED THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO SAID THAT THE LEAK WAS FROM THE TRANSMISSION AND THAT THEY HAVE NO LIABILITY SINCE THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT DID NOT CAUSE THEM TO HAVE TO ACTUALLY TOUCH THE TRANSMISSION SINCE THE TWO SYSTEMS ARE COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT OF ONE ANOTHER. CORPORATE HYUNDAI SAYS THAT THE POWERTRAIN (I.E. TRANSMISSION) IS NOT COVERED UNDER THEIR EXTENDED 120,000 MILE WARRANTY AND THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS GOING TO BE AN OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE TO ME.

RECALL CAMPAIGN #14V434000 WAS REPAIRED IN 2014. THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM IS OCCURRING NOW IN 2017. I HAVE NO IDEA IT THE VEHICLE IS ACTUALLY IN PARK BECAUSE THE INDICATOR LIGHTS DO NOT LIGHT UP, SO I ALWAYS HAVE TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. WHEN I AM IN DRIVE, I NOW HAVE TO ENSURE THE DOORS ARE LOCKED MANUALLY BECAUSE THE VEHICLE DOES NOT REALIZE I AM IN DRIVE AND KEEPS THE DOORS UNLOCKED. ON 8/28/17 I REQUESTED A SERVICE APPOINTMENT AND WAS TOLD I HAVE TO DRIVE THIS UNSAFE VEHICLE UNTIL 09/19/17 BEFORE I CAN BRING IT IN TO SEE IF THEY CAN FIX THE PROBLEM. ALSO, ON 8/15/17 I HAD A ONE-TIME INCIDENT WHERE MY BRAKES SLIPPED. LUCKILY, THE BRAKES HAVE NOT SLIPPED AGAIN.

WHILE REVERSING FROM PARKING SPACE, GEAR EITHER SLIPS OR LURCHES, THEN GEAR INDICATOR IN THE SHIFTER DISAPPEARS, AS WELL AS GEAR INDICATOR ON THE DASH. THE CAR IS HESITANT TO ACCELERATE, AS IF IT IS IN NEUTRAL. SHUTTING OFF THE CAR AND RESTARTING, EVERYTHING RETURNS TO NORMAL. THIS HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY, AND HAS OCCURRED FOUR TIMES IN THE PAST WEEK. ATTACHED PICTURE OF DASH INDICATOR AND GEAR SHIFTER SHOWS THAT THE CAR IS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 18 MPH, BUT GEAR IS NOT INDICATED ON THE DASH OR GEAR SHIFTER.

I HAVE TAKEN MY VEHICLE IN RECENTLY BECAUSE MY CAR STALLED A WEEK AGO WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING 55 MILES AN HOUR. AFTER THE INSPECTION COMPLETED AT HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, I WAS ADVISED EVERYTHING IS OKAY TO DRIVE THE CAR AND WE WOULD LIKE TO COMPLETE AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO TEST OUT THE ENGINES CONSUMPTION FOR WHAT THEY THINK COULD BE A SAFETY RECALL INCIDENT. I DROVE THE CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY FOR ABOUT 85 MILES SINCE IT WAS LAST IN THE SHOP, FOR WHAT WAS SAID THAT EVERYTHING WAS SAFE TO DRIVE, AND I NOTICED TODAY THAT MY CAR STARTED TO RATTLE AT A 65 MILES AN HOUR ON I95 NORTH IN MARYLAND- WENT I HAD TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE MY CAR HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE UNDERNEATH THE HOOD AND ENGINE OF CAR AND THE SCAR STALLED. SMOOTH ENTERED CABIN OF CAR AND FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED. CAR WAS NOT ABLE TO BE DRIVEN AND WAS VERY UNSAFE AFTER I WAS TOLD I WAS OKAY TO DRIVE IT.

PURCHASED VEHICLE NEW 11/1/10 AND HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT PROBLEM ("THE PROBLEM") WHICH I HAVE REPORTED TO LOCAL DEALERS AND BROUGHT TO THEIR SHOPS AND JUST RECENTLY REALIZED THIS PROBLEM HAD BEEN IDENTIFIED EXACTLY AS TS-12-AT-018: "AFTER VEHICLE IS SHIFTED TO PARK, THE BUTTON OR IGNITION KEY BUTTON IS TURNED OFF, THE ACCESSORY POWER REMAINS ON." CHRONOLOGY - 2/21/12; 26,995 MILES, LIA OF HARTFORD - SHIFT KNOB REPLACEMENT (STILL HAD THE PROBLEM AFTERWARD); 10/21/14, 74,730 MI, LIA, ECLIP ON SHIFTER (STILL HAD THE PROBLEM AFTERWARD); 2/10/16; 94,814 MI KEY OF MANCHESTER, (RECALLS: ENGINE SHAVINGS, BRAKE PEDAL STOPPER, FRONT RIGHT INSIDE DOOR HANDLE) - THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO NO REPAIR MADE; 11/29/16, 107,014 MI - KEY MANCH, THEY IDENTIFIED NOTED TSB ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROBLEM EVEN STATING CAR MANUFACTURE DATE IN RANGE FOR THE PROBLEM - BUT AFTER ASKING, MANUFACTURER WON'T COVER COST OR EVEN PORTION - AND I HAD TO PAY DIAGNOSIS CHARGE OF $62.50 (WHICH THEY SAID THEY REDUCED BY 50% - AND ALSO RECOMMENDED REPLACING MY TIMING BELT, BUT I BELIEVE CAR HAS A CHAIN WHICH DOESN'T NEED TO BE REPLACED). I HAVE HAD AT LEAST 10 REPAIRS DONE TO MY CAR THAT WERE COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER, INCLUDING ONE FOR A TSB AFTER THE 60,000 MILE WARRANTY EXPIRED (THE ECLIP). IN ADDITION, I HAVE PAID FOR REPAIRS THAT I THINK SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED (A NEW STARTER DUE TO A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH AN INTERNAL PLASTIC LEVER, AND REPLACEMENT OF THE INSIDE DRIVER DOOR HANDLE - NOTING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE INSIDE PASSENGER DOOR HANDLE WAS PAID FOR 2 YEARS LATER). MY REQUEST - REPAIR THIS ONGOING PROBLEM WHICH HAS BEEN INTERMITTENT AND REQUIRES ME TO REPEATEDLY TURN THE CAR BACK ON, MOVE THE SHIFT LEVER OUT OF PARK, UNTIL I CAN COMPLETELY SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF. THE PROBLEM MAY BE A SAFE ISSUE, SINCE I HEAR A LOAD CLICK WHEN IT FINALLY DOES GO INTO PARK AND I CAN TURN OFF CAR. *TR

WHEN IN REVERSE, IT MAKES A CLICKING NOISE WHEN TURNING. GAS GAUGE DOESN'T WORK. IT NOW WILL RUN OUT OF GAS WHEN THERE ARE "60 MILES" LEFT UNTIL EMPTY. THE CRUISE CONTROL BUTTON WILL NOT WORK. YOU HAVE TO KEEP PRESSING IT TO COME ON. ALSO, THE BUTTON TO SEE TRIP MILES, TRIP A, TRIP B ETC, DOES NOT WORK ON THE 1ST TRY. IT TAKES MANY PUSHES TO GET THE SCREEN TO CHANGE.

AT AROUND 107,000 MILES THE MOTOR ON MY 20111 SONATA SHUT OFF ON THE 91 EAST FREEWAY WHILE TRAVELING ABOUT 70MPH. I WAS FORCED TO PULL OFF ON THE HARD SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND THE VEHICLE HAD NO POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES. THE MOTOR STARTED BACK UP EVENTUALLY BUT WAS MAKING A LOUD NOISE AND FAILED COMPLETELY SHORTLY AFTER. I REPLACED THE MOTOR IN THE SONATA WITH A USED MOTOR AND REPAIRED THE DAMAGE TO THE SUSPENSION AND TIRES.

WHEN STARTING AND MOVING INTO A DRIVE GEAR FROM PARK, OR WHILE AT A STOP IN DRIVE, THE VEHICLE WILL SUDDENLY LOSE ITS DRIVE LETTER DISPLAY AND WILL FEEL LIKE THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT ENGAGED. THIS IS STILL OCCURRING AFTER THE DEALERSHIP INSPECTED THE VEHICLE FOR THIS ISSUE. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED REPEATEDLY. AFTER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF THEN ON, THE DRIVE LETTER DISPLAY REAPPEARS WITH THE DRIVE LETTER THAT I MOVED THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER TO. WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS MOVED TO REVERSE, THE DRIVE LETTER DISAPPEARS AGAIN. SOMETIMES THIS HAPPENS 3 OR 4 TIMES IMMEDIATELY IN A ROW. IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED WHILE IN DRIVE AT A STOP AND HAS REQUIRED THAT I TURN OFF THE ENGINE THEN TURN IT ON AGAIN TO SEE THE DRIVE LETTERS.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING THE CAR THE TRANSMISSION GEAR INDICATOR LETTERS IN THE DASHBOARD WERE BLANK AND THE SHIFTER GEARS LETTERS WERE NOT ILLUMINATED. A TEMPORARY REMEDY WAS TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTART THE CAR. THIS PROBLEM IS ERRATIC AND CANNOT BE REPRODUCED AT WILL.
