Recalls and investigations

  1. Fuel system, gasoline, delivery, hoses, lines/piping, and fittingsMay 6, 2022

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata vehicles. The low pressure fuel hose that connects the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump may crack over time, due to heat generated within the engine compartment.

A cracked fuel hose may leak fuel, which can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will replace the low pressure fuel hose, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 10, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 227. This recall replaces NHTSA recall number 20V-121. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 20V-121 that did not receive a replacement fuel hose will need to have this new recall remedy performed.

  2. Fuel system, gasoline, delivery, hoses, lines/piping, and fittingsFeb 28, 2020

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata vehicles. The low pressure fuel hose that connects the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump may crack over time due to heat generated within the engine compartment.

If the fuel line cracks, a fuel leak can occur, increasing the risk of a fire.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the low-pressure fuel hose for damage or leaking, replacing it as necessary. If no damage or leaking is found, heat-protective tape will be installed. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began August 10, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 189. This recall has been replaced by NHTSA recall number 22V-314.

  3. EngineDec 28, 2018

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Sonata and 2013-2014 Santa Fe Sport vehicles previously repaired under recall numbers 15V-568 and 17V-226. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned, or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, allowing fuel to leak from the pipe.

A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pipe, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 1, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's recall number for this recall is 180.

  4. Seat belts, pretensionerOct 4, 2017

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Sonata and 2011-2015 Sonata Hybrid vehicles previously repaired under recall campaign 17V-152. The seat belt linkages for both front seat belts may detach from the seat belt anchor pretensioners.

If the seat belt linkage detaches from the seat belt anchorage, it can not properly restrain the occupant in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will again verify the connection between the seat belt linkage and the pretensioner and additionally install a warning label to prevent future seat belt linkage detachment, free of charge. The recall began November 6, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 169.

  5. Engine and engine cooling, engineMar 31, 2017

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata and Santa Fe Sport vehicles. Machining errors during the engine manufacturing process may cause premature bearing wear within the engine.

Bearing wear may result in the engine seizing, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine, replacing the engine short block, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 162.

  7. Power train, automatic transmissionJul 18, 2014

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, through May 29, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable may detach from from the shift lever pin.

If the transmission shift cable detaches, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver parks the vehicle, despite selecting the 'PARK' position, the transmission may not be in 'PARK.' If the vehicle is not in the 'PARK' position and the parking brake is not applied, there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, repair the connection between the shift cable and shift lever, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 123.

WHILE DRIVING MULTIPLE INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE DASH CAME ON, (BRAKE, ABS, TRACTIONS CONTROL, STEERING, SEAT BELT, AIR BAG AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS.) T HIGHWAY SPEED THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTED INTO 1ST GEAR AND I WAS FORCED TO EXIT THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY. I SAFELY CAME TO A STOP AND SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF. I THEN RESTARTED IT AND THEN I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET HOME. I THEN CALLED AAA AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. MY MECHANIC FOUND THAT THEY COULD NOT COMMUNICATE WITH MOST MODULES/COMPUTERS THAT ARE IN THE CAR. AFTER HOURS OF TESTING, THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE BACK UP CAMERA WAS CORRUPTING THE COMPUTER DATA LINES AND ESSENTIALLY SHUTTING DOWN CRUCIAL MODULES IN THE VEHICLE. ONCE THE CAMERA WAS REMOVED FROM THE CAR, THE VEHICLE OPERATIONS RETURNED TO NORMAL. PLEASE ADVISE HYUNDAI OF THIS ISSUE, SO OTHER MOTORISTS CAN BE SPARED THIS FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE. I WILL PROVIDE THE INVOICE FOR REPAIR AND THE FAILED PART, WHICH I HAVE IN MY POSSESSION, IF YOU NEED. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

  5. Electrical system, Jul 7, 2015

ON THREE OCCASIONS MY CAR WOULD NOT START. AFTER THE SECOND TIME IT FAILED, I BROUGHT IT IN. HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT AFTER HOOKING IT UP TO THE MACHINE. NO CODES SHOWED ON THE SYSTEM CHECK. THEY SAID THEY CHECKED THE BATTERY. THEY SAID IT COULD BE THE BRAKE SENSOR, WHICH WAS CHANGED FROM A RECALL, SO THEY SAID I HAVE A NEW ONE, THEY WOULD JUST ADJUST IT AND HOPEFULLY WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. THREE DAYS LATER ON A SATURDAY MORNING, THE CAR WOULD NOT START AGAIN. I BROUGHT IT BACK IN. THEY KEPT MY CAR FROM 06/20 - 06/30 AND COULD NOT FIND OR REPRODUCE THE SAME PROBLEM. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART. WHEN ENTERING THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START INTERMITTENTLY. 9. Electrical system, Exterior lighting, Seat belts, Aug 31, 2014

I NOTICED THAT MY BLINKERS WERE WORKING BUT I COULD NOT HEAR THEM AND MY SEAT BELT DID THE SAME. I WENT TO THE MORGAN HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. THEY FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT MAKING CHIME SOUNDS CAUSED BY INSUFFICIENT VOLUME COMING FROM CHIME IN BCM.THEY ORDERED THE MODULE TO CORRECT AND REPLACED IT A FEW DAYS LATER. WHEN I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP I COULD NOT TELL ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE CHIME SOUND. SO I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE MY HEARING AND SCHEDULED AN APOINTMENT WITH AND EAR DOCTOR. I EXPLAINED TO HIM WHAT WAS HAPPENING. HE TESTED ME AND SAID THAT I DID HAVE SOME DIFFICULTY IN HEARING HIGH PITCH SOUNDS BUT THAT IT WAS NOT BAD ENOUGH TO HAVE HEARING AIDS. HE WENT OUT TO MY CAR AND LISTENED TO THE CAR CHIME AND SAID THAT HE HAD GOOD HEARING FOR HIS AGE AND HE WAS ALSO HAVING DIFFFICULTY HEARING IT. SO I LEFT HIS OFFICE AND WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS MET BY A VERY YOUNG LADY AND SHE SAID THAT SHE COULD HEAR IT BUT IT WAS NOT VERY LOUD. SHE THEN GOT AN ELDERLY MAN THAT WORKED THERE TO LISTED AND HE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS I DID. THEN WE GOT A MIDDLE AGE WOMAN SALES PERSON TO LISTEN AND SHE HAD DIFFICULTY ALSO. THEN THEY GOT THE KEYS FOR FOUR 2014 SONATAS AND TRIED THEM ALL OF THEM FAILED THE TEST. SO AS A LAST RESORT WE GOT THE KEYS ON A 2015 SONATA AND WE COULD HEAR IT FINE. THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI TO SEE IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WILL BE RECALLED OR IF THEY HAVE HAD ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS. IT CONCERNS ME BECAUSE I AM USE TO HEARING THE CHIME WHEN I PUT MY KEYS IN MY CAR AND IF FIXED MAY CAUSE ME FROM HAVING AN ACCIDENT WITH OUT MY SEAT BELT ON. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YALL ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM ANYWHERE ELSE. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

CAR BATTERY GOES DEAD,UNABLE TO START CAR, COULD HAPPEN AT ANY TIME. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES. THE DEALER HAS NO IDEA WHY. EVEN HYUNDAI CORP DOES NOT HAVE ANY ANSWERS. THE CAR HAS BEEN BACK TO THE DEALER FOR DAYS AT A TIME WITH NO RESOLUTION. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE THE CAR CAN LEAVE YOU STRANDED, IT IS SO UNRELIABLE. THIS IS A 2014 SONATA. I SEE MANY PROBLEMS ON THE INTERNET FOR THIS PROBLEM WITH HYUNDAI CARS. IT APPEARS TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH CARS WITH "PUSH TO START". *TR
