  7. Power train, automatic transmissionJul 18, 2014

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, through May 29, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable may detach from from the shift lever pin.

If the transmission shift cable detaches, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver parks the vehicle, despite selecting the 'PARK' position, the transmission may not be in 'PARK.' If the vehicle is not in the 'PARK' position and the parking brake is not applied, there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, repair the connection between the shift cable and shift lever, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 123.

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the steering column started to shake and was making popping noises. The contact safely parked the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the flexible steering coupler needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. 2. Electrical system, Exterior lighting, Mar 11, 2022

Headlights turn off when applying it turn signal. Low beam headlights are not shining far enough down the road to be able to see.

  3. Engine, Mar 2, 2022

Although my VIN is not a part of the recall I have undergone the same issue as those recalled. Engine light blinking, car in limp mode, unable to drive. My local mechanic scanned the codes to find glow plug stuck on so he reprogrammed car but it went back in limp mode. Then towed car to Hyundai who reprogrammed my car and I picked it up. However I did not make it home. Car towed back to hyundai. They then had to replace the sensor-assy knock. Car seems fine now and engine light no longer blinking for now.

  4. Engine, Feb 25, 2022

While driving home, going about 40-45 mph my dashboard lit up with a check engine, battery, steering and oil lights. Within a couple miles (2 maybe 3) I lost all power. All this happened within minutes. I tried to restart after sitting for 10 minutes, and the engine would not (even try to) turn over. Ended up using jumper cables to start get car started when the engine started knocking--horribly. *Likely not available for inspection unless said inspection happens soon.* My safety was extremely compromised as it all happened within minutes of any dashboard indicators that there was a concern at 6pm. I was in the midst of driving on a semi-busy road during rush hour. I barely made it up the hill where I had just enough room to pull off into a *slightly* wider area of the road--this road had no gutters/pull-offs. The car has not been inspected as of yet. It will be going to the dealer by COB today (2/25/22). I was informed it would take at least a few days for them to go over the car. It has not been inspected by any police or insurance representatives as of this time.

  5. Service brakes, Feb 24, 2022

Brake light illuminated & brake pedal travelled farther down affecting stopping of vehicle. ABS hydraulic control unit is leaking brake fluid. Repair shop confirmed leak.

  6. Engine and engine cooling, Feb 18, 2022

Rear RH taillamp constantly out and noticeable on MANY Hyundais!! Replaced multiple times and burns out within days!! Also loss of oil but not leaking.

  7. Engine, Feb 17, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed with bearing wear resulting in engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer denied the engine replacement due to the rebuilt title. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V226000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.

  8. Air bags, Feb 12, 2022

The airbag light turned and stayed on. I checked my Sonata in a repair shop and the diagnostic test reads a clock spring resistant too high. It recommended a clock spring replacement. I checked on the internet and found there was a recall for clock spring recall for Sonata 2011-2013, but my Sonata is 2014. Not sure why my 2014 model was missed. Please check if the clock spring in 2014 has the same model as Sonata 2013. If yes, please add Sonata 2014 to the recall list. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed by a coworker that her VIN was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V121000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure but was informed they would not be responsible for the repairs for the recall due to not having the recall completed previous to the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 147,000.

  10. Power train, Engine, Feb 2, 2022

i was coming around a bent and accelerated down a straightaway when the car shutdown and all dash lights came on. I had to quickly find a spot to pull over as I was losing momentum and it was hard to brake. I pulled on to the front yard of a residence as there was no road shoulder. The car was smoking and there was a distinct smell coming from it. Some of the car was still out over the road so traffic had to avoid it. There weren't streetlights and it was foggy at night. I used the emergency flashers. There was no warning before the problem took place as far as engine light or warning lights being on. I had the car towed. It is currently at a dealership. Dealership determined engine seizure after diagnosis.

  11. Vehicle speed control, Engine, Jan 30, 2022

January 29th my check engine light came on and I was not able to go no more than 40mph. there is a knocking noise coming from the engine. took it to autozone and the code was P1326. Now when I start it up it has a smoking smell to it and the knocking is getting louder. I have not driven my vehicle since January 29 2022 The knocking noise first started January 24th. I see there is a recall for this issue with other Hyundai vehicles but for some reason it is not showed for my vin. One Hyundai dealership told me they can not look at my vehicle until march1

  12. Exterior lighting, Jan 28, 2022, fire

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while attempting to replace the rear taillight blubs, she had noticed that the bulbs had melted into the connectors which results in loss of rear taillight use. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with needing a taillight wiring harness replaced but was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.

  13. Exterior lighting, Jan 21, 2022

Headlights and taillights constantly burning out. Taillights have melted sockets on both driver and passenger side and it seems the fuses are burning for anything powering the exterior lights. This is a safety hazard from not being seen on the road by other vehicles to a potential fire hazard.

  14. Steering, Jan 16, 2022

The coupling linkage in the steering system has a piece that is deteriorating. This causes the steering mechanism to slip and then clunks into place after turning the wheel a few centimeters. I have spoken with the mechanic about this he states this is a common issue with the Hyundai vehicles. The replacement of the part is extremely cheap but the labor cost is huge as the steering column has to be opened up and closed.

  15. Engine and engine cooling, Jan 13, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle stalled with several unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact managed to coast the vehicle off the highway before shutting it off. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where they informed her that the engine rod bearings had failed which led to engine failure. Upon investigation, it was discovered that NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V226000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) could be linked to her failure. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

  16. Seat belts, Jan 6, 2022

The seat belt buckle will not stay clicked in. It is hard to get it to stay clicked in when first buckling up then while driving it will randomly unclip. It does is sometimes when I am braking too.

  17. Electrical system, Exterior lighting, Jan 4, 2022

Headlights will randomly flash off/on while driving. Using turn signals will also make the headlights (and some interior lighting) flicker off/on. Headlights were replaced, but problem still exists. This is a major safety issue for me as other drivers believe I'm flashing my lights intentionally, not to mention, driving at night and having your headlights turn off randomly isn't very safe. We feel very unsafe driving this vehicle after dark because of this issue. This problem started at approx. 70,000 miles. Took the vehicle to the dealer and was told the issue is a defective multi function switch and that others are having the same issue. However, but the dealer said this issue is only covered by the warranty up to 50K miles and I would have to pay to have this resolved. I contacted Hyundai Consumer Affair's and opened a complaint with them. I was assigned case number 18855023, but was told there isn't anything Hyundai could do and I would need to deal with my dealer to get this repaired out of warranty. From my research I've found that many other Sonata owners are experiencing this same issue and that some of the Hyundai Genesis line of vehicles also are experiencing these issues, but in response to these Genesis owners, Hyundai has extended the warranty of the multifunction switch assembly to 15 years with unlimited miles from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use (whichever occurs first). Why is Hyundai not addressing this same issue that exists on their other model lines??? Hyundai needs to extend the warranty and repair this defective switch for ALL other Hyundai models. This is a very unsafe and potentially life threatening hazardous issue that needs to be address for all Hyundai customers and not just the Genesis owners.

  18. Engine and engine cooling, Jan 3, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, an abnormal ticking sound was coming from the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact called the dealer who informed him of NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V226000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) which was linked to the failure. The contact was instructed to have the vehicle towed to the dealer for service. Once the vehicle was towed to the dealer, the vehicle remained in their possession for weeks. The contact was informed that his vehicle was not under recall and was given an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure and provided a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

  19. Chest clip, Buckle, Harness, Dec 31, 2021

Chest Harness slips off of the metal TClip in the back of the seat

  20. Engine, Dec 30, 2021

I’ve had my car for a year and I change the oil faithfully. Well I now have a rod knocking and not sure why? My car has 138,000 miles on it. And I’ve changed my oil and filter as I should so now my car is sitting in the yard it cranks but when you crank it you wouldn’t think anything was wrong with it. You give it gas and it starts knocking. Why is this happening?

  21. Engine, Dec 27, 2021

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while the son was driving approximately 40 MPH, the vehicle suddenly would not accelerate before the engine stalled. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 130,000.

  22. Electrical system, Engine, Dec 23, 2021, fire

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal was depressed while he was at a complete stop at the stoplight, but it failed to respond. The battery warning light and several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact turned off and attempted to restart the vehicle however, the vehicle would not start. The contact noticed smoke coming from underneath the driver’s side hood. The contact was able to push the vehicle to the side of the road with some assistance. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer called the contact and advised that he would be responsible for the cost of the repair as he failed to complete an unknown recall repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 50,100.

  23. Engine, Dec 22, 2021

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine. The accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact was able to continue to drive to her residence. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer who diagnosed the failure as a rod bearing failure with the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

  24. Other or unspecified, Dec 21, 2021

I brought my 2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid in for the 964- AUXILIARY CANISTER INSTALLION & 966- ENGINE MONITORING LOGIC Service recall campaigns on 12/08/21. Today, 12/21/21, in heavy traffic on the highway, my car engine abruptly shuts off, immediately decelerating, completely losing any ability to accerate while the engine light, parking break light come on along with an "electric motor warning - safely pull over and do not drive" message on the dashboard. All this happens while a high pitch alarm goes off. All happening simultaneously without warning on the highway with vehicles surrounding us driving 70 mph! This has never happened prior to today and should never happen. How we managed to avoid an accident or worse was a miracle. This was life threatening and should not be taken lightly!

  25. Engine, Dec 16, 2021

Vehicle died while driving on the highway had to pull over and have the car towed. Hyaundai dealership diagnosed it as a bad engine bearing which was part of an open and active recall which they confirmed. Hyaundai advised it is part of a recall that is still open but stated we didn’t come soon enough so they refuse to fix it. We never received the recall notice and the recall is still open and active.
