Recalls and investigations

  1. Fuel system, gasolineNov 18, 2025

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Sonata vehicles. A damaged check valve can allow air to enter the fuel tank, causing it to expand and contact hot exhaust components, melting the tank.

A melted fuel tank can leak, increasing the risk of a fire.

Dealers will inspect and replace the check valve. The fuel tank assembly will be inspected for damage and replaced if necessary. Additionally, dealers will inspect and update the engine control unit software. All repairs will be performed as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning March 13, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 286. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 19, 2025.

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Sonata, Veloster N, 2022 Santa Cruz, Elantra N, and Kona N vehicles. The vehicle's "fail-safe" limited-mobility drive mode may be impaired, when prompted by a transmission oil pump malfunction, which can result in a complete loss of drive power.

Loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and replace the transmission, as necessary. Dealers will also update the transmission control unit software. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 10, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 236.

A fuel leak increases the risk of a fire.

Dealers will inspect and tighten, or replace the fuel pipe as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 207.

  1. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, May 14, 2026

The cars fan is constantly running even when the car is cool. I think it has to do with the ITMS I contacted the dealer and they said there’s nothing they can do about it this happens every time the vehicle is started even when I am parked. The fan is constantly running at 100%.

  2. Vehicle speed control, Other or unspecified, Engine, Oct 15, 2025

While driving around 20 mph my cars rpms will rev and my car will take off then my automatic breaks will kick on and today around [XXX] I was going under 25 mph and there was a car in-front of me and it really scared me as I went to hit the breaks my car already did. My car has done this twice now, both on residential roads. The first time I figured it could have been a me error but now I know this is something seriously wrong with my vehicle. I have had my car for years and I know my car and it never just takes off how it has been there’s always a delay when I go to accelerate. This is very concerning and I’m scared to drive my car now. I was driving my yesterday morning like normal, about 15mph getting off of a freeway offramp, when all of the sudden I heard a strange brief noise come from the inside of the car. I couldn't figure it out so I drove home. Went inside for about 20 minutes, went back outside to leave again and I noticed my panoramic sunroof had shattered/exploded from the inside outward. I had it towed to my local dealer in hopes warranty would cove, but I was told it wouldn't. I have to use aftermarket glass with my insurance company to replace it due to Geico not covering OEM glass.

My itms went bad but no codes pop up when getting checked make my gauge temperature line sit over the 200 mark looks to be around 220 without steeping on the gas hard

  5. Other or unspecified, Engine, Jan 22, 2023

My 2022 hyundai sonata sel completely shuts down while driving, most recently it happened twice in the middle of an intersection when I was trying to make a left turn it is very very scary and dangerous. I purchased the vehicle in July 2022 and since then it has had consistent idling issues meaning if it's parked too long it will just turn off but now it is turning into while I'm actually driving at the engine dies and again recently it's been in the middle of intersections which is very scary. My check engine light came on it only 4000 miles on new car - very concerning. I encourage anyone having intermittent engine stalling in any way to make sure we are reporting this.

  6. Power train, Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Dec 2, 2022

Shifter system malfunction service immediately was displayed on my dash 10+ times which caused me to not be able to shift my car out of drive or whatever gear I was in when this occurred. I was at an intersection and when I was coming to a stop the car displayed this error code and wouldn’t allow me to go until I turned the car off and on twice till it was able to reset back to park then allowing me to start and shift to drive to actually go. This jeopardizes my safety and the safety of others considering my car could give out or not change gears at any given point. This is extremely concerning. The problem has not been reproduced by the dealership but has been in 2 times for this issue within a month. I took pictures and showed it to the dealership and they said Hyundai won’t cover it. They felt bad and believed me so much to the point their service department is covering the cost of the Transmission shifter module (TCM) in hopes this will resolve the issue. Only a Hyundai dealership has worked on my vehicle.

I suffered a flat tire and called my husband to change my tire. The jack that was included with the vehicle fell over in the middle of the tire change nearly pinning my husband's hands between the wheel well and the spare tire. The road was level. The jack was simply too small to hold the vehicle up. My car suffered approximately $3000 in damages. I tried to deal with the dealership and Hyundai Consumer Affairs to no avail. These jacks are dangerous and at least the base should be wider to prevent it from tipping.

Driving on the highway my panoramic sunroof unexpectedly exploded over myself and passengers head!

I’m reaching out to report the troubles and functioning of my Hyundai Sonata 2022. I am the first owner and received the car January 7, 2022. The car started with a loud nose under the hood . That happened maybe four times. Then the car began to switch gears on its on. I would park the car and press P for park but the car would go to N instead . That happened about 20-30 times . Now the car is randomly switching gears while at stop lights. While at a pause the car automatically shuts off which is normal. Recently the car would be at a light and switch gears . I was at a light when the car shut down and went to D, N , and stayed in R. I had to cut my car off just for it to go to P and then D , all while the light was red. If I didn’t, I would have backed into the person behind me . The self driving is not accurate at all and the car does tries to play blue tooth and apple play at the same time . I’m reaching out because I’ve been to the dealership multiple time to have it checked out and they found nothing wrong. I will be making another appointment for this Friday, May 6, 2022. I need to know what is going to be done and how should I go about this if it is said that nothing is wrong once again .
