Recalls and investigations

  1. EngineSep 17, 2021

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017 Tucson and Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage.

A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the defect on November 16, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed January 15, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 209.

  2. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/modulePark outsideSep 4, 2020

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) recalled certain 2019-2021 Tucson vehicles on September 4, 2020. On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally and cause an electrical short, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.

An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury or crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HECU fuse. For 2019-2021 model years, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software will also be updated. Recall repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began November 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 195.

  3. Electrical system, wiringNov 21, 2016

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Tucson vehicles manufactured May 19, 2015, to November 14, 2016, and 2017 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured November 28, 2015, to November 14, 2016. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness that, due to a malfunction of the tow hitch module, may result, in the trailer brake lights being constantly illuminated. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

If the trailer brake lights stay illuminated while being used, other drivers may be confused, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected accessory trailer hitch wiring harnesses, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 13, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 153.

  1. Engine, Apr 8, 2025

While driving down the interstate the vehicle would not accelerate and the RPMs were fluctuating. We were luckily near an exit and were able to pull into a gas station. The check engine light came on. Once we parked the engine stalled and we were not able to restart. We had the vehicle towed to a AAA certified mechanic, they stated there was no oil and that the engine needed to be replaced. We did not receive any low oil indicators for the vehicle. We had the vehicle flat bed towed back to our home town where a 2nd mechanic indicated that there was still some oil in the vehicle but that the engine would need to be replaced. The VIN for this car shows no engine recall but this appears to be the same issue that has resulted in Hyundai engine recall with the 2.0 vehicles.

  2. Engine, Apr 1, 2025

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while the accelerator pedal was depressed. The check engine and check engine oil warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local service shop where it was diagnosed with engine knock. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. Upon further investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced due to the knocking coming from the engine. The local dealer advised the contact that parts for the repair were not available. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 104,000.

  3. Engine, Mar 28, 2025

I had my oil changed at a Hyundai dealership at 102,000 miles however even before the next oil change was due my engine had a bearing failure. The dealership could not fix my car for months and that I should find another Hyundai dealership to fix the issue. The next dealership told me that the cost was $14000k to fix and that the engine had oil sludge buildup. My Carfax report is shows consistent and provable oil maintenance every 3K - 4K miles. The engine had been consuming oil which I report to the dealership but sine there was not any check engine light they did not do anything about the consumption problem. I have not yet had the vehicle inspected by independent mechanic or anyone else. no warning lights ever came on that alerted me to low oil.

  5. Engine, Mar 27, 2025

A knocking noise from the engine. The dealership is refusing to give us a warranty for the rebuilt of the engine that we will be covering 40% of the cost. Is this possible? For us to spend approximately $7K and not get a warranty on the work done?

  6. Engine, Mar 24, 2025

Engine failed at 137,000 miles. The vehicle is available for inspection. The engine failed while driving with no warning lights, or indications that anything was wrong. It started with a knock that gradually got worse and worse over the course of 5 miles. Once it shut down it failed to ever restart again. Te vehicle was inspected by a Manufacturer Dealership, they did not give me specific insights as to what caused the engine to fail other than that there was no oil present in the engine at the time of inspection. However I have every oil change receipt, documenting regular, on time oil changes.

  7. Engine, Mar 24, 2025

There is metal shards in the oil from the engine. The oil burns up within a week or so. The guy at the oil change place said it was common in these make and model cars and I need a new engine. It can stall or catch fire which can pose a risk to me and/or other cars on the road. I drive around with a [XXX] son it's my daily car and the engine is not good. We are constantly having to put oil in it. Other vehicles from this company have been recalled for the same issue. Please have it inspected and fixed. 8. Engine and engine cooling, Mar 18, 2025

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The contact was topping off the oil weekly. The failure had become more persistent. While driving 65 MPH, the vehicle started shaking and was making a knocking sound at the front-end by the engine compartment. The check engine warning light was flashing. The contact coasted to the side of the road and checked the oil level. The oil level was low, and the contact added oil to the vehicle. The contact restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle began shaking, making a knocking sound from the front end, and there was white smoke coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle. The vehicle was turned off, the smoke ceased, and the vehicle was left parked in the parking lot at work. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.

  9. Engine, Mar 11, 2025

Since reaching approximately 79,000 miles on my vehicle (which I am the original owner of), I have noticed excessive oil consumption. Over the course of 3,000 miles between oil changes, the vehicle consumed about 4 quarts of oil, and the oil lamp came on. Additionally, I consistently experience the smell of burning oil inside the cabin whenever I back in or out of parking spaces/my garage, which poses a health risk. Beyond the health concerns, there are potential consequences, including engine damage, fire risks, reduced performance, and with that, an increased likelihood of accidents. While Hyundai acknowledges that this is a known issue, they have done little to offer a proper solution, merely attempting to keep the consumption within barely acceptable limits. Thank you for taking note of this problem.

  10. Engine, Mar 8, 2025

My 2017 Hyundai tucson is consumeing oil at a steady rate. Took it to dealership roughly year to do oil consumption test. They said my headgasket, turbo, and pil pan was all leaking. They replaced those parts before starting oil consumption test would be performed. $3,300 later still consuming roughly 1 quart per 500 miles. It faild the oil consumption test and i was advised to do a combustion chamber cleaning next. $700 later and im burning 1 quart roughly every 1k miles. Took it back to them and said thats normal and it is fixed. I'm very concerned considering no car should burn that much oil in between 3k oil changes and only holds 5 quarts of oil. I also have 2 young children and wife that regularly drive the car and it's sluggish when getting on the gas like entering the highway and I'm worried the engine may just go out of nowhere. My local dealership doesn't really care nor does corporate. This is my last ditch effort to get something done. I know I and many, many, many, others are also dealing with this and something needs done soon. Thank you for your time.

  11. Vehicle speed control, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Mar 5, 2025

My car has been burning oil for over a year. there is no leak. I have been putting three quarts in every 4 to 6 weeks. I have now replaced two coil packs and the spark plugs. my engine light is on because it said 3 and 4 was misfiring so i recently replaced those coil packs and now it said spark plug and i replaced it again as well. so the engine light coming on and what it says the problem is is wrong. now when i push the gas it is knocking or missing. not sure how to describe it. no one has looked at it other than a friend that is a mechanic and he says its probably the engine because this kind of car has these problems.

  12. Engine, Mar 2, 2025

Excessive oil consumption, engine started knocking, dealer confirmed needs engine replacement which is covered under ONLY original 1st owner and NOT subsequent owner. Hyundai refuses help. Have not been able to drive my Tucson for a year. Still paying monthly payments and insurance

  13. Engine, Feb 26, 2025

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the oil light was flashing on the instrument panel while turning the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for an oil consumption test and the oil was topped off. The contact was instructed to bring the vehicle back after 1,000 miles. Upon investigation, the contact discovered that the engine oil consumption failure was widely reported. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer as instructed, and the contact was informed that the engine had not consumed enough oil to be considered a defect. The contact was advised to purchase a factory-made oil filter from the dealer because the independent mechanic had not used the proper oil filter on the oil change. The contact stated that at the follow-up oil change, the independent mechanic used the factory oil filter; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not under recall or warranty. The vehicle remained with the independent mechanic unrepaired. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.

  14. Other or unspecified, Engine, Feb 25, 2025

My vehicle began experiencing issues around 83,000 miles. The engine started burning oil, showed shuddering during acceleration, and there was a noticeable smell of gasoline inside the cabin. Eventually, the car wouldn’t start, so I had it towed to the dealership. The technicians confirmed it was running rough and behaving abnormally. The Hyundai dealership conducted a full inspection and diagnosed several issues. They replaced the spark plugs, performed a GDI-safe induction cleaning, replaced the coolant and brake fluids, completed a transmission fluid service, installed a new battery, carried out wheel alignments, and changed the cabin air filter. All of this work was completed in October 2024. However, in December 2024, I had to return to the dealership because the fuel smell inside the cabin persisted. Although they couldn’t find the source of the issue, the smell eventually disappeared after the visit. Following that, I was advised to check my oil every 3,000 miles due to the GDI engine's reputation for burning oil quickly. Despite this, the car began running rough again, and when I checked the oil, it was completely dry—well before reaching the 3,000-mile mark. I had to get another oil change sooner than expected. Unfortunately, the issue continued. I brought the vehicle back to the dealership for another inspection. They suggested starting a monitoring process where I would bring the car in every 1,000 miles to check the oil levels. After driving 1,000 miles, the oil level was just slightly above the low mark—still not normal for such a short distance. I urgently need assistance to move forward with the engine replacement process before my warranty expires. I am currently at 91,000 miles.

  15. Engine, Feb 17, 2025

Car would not accelerate after getting on the interstate. Had to ease vehicle off exit ramp to side of road. Multiple engine lights on. Car would no longer start. Had independent mechanic shop evaluate as well as local Hyundai dealership. Both determined internal compression rod failure. Only solution is to replace engine. It is a 1.6L T for 2017 Tucson. The VIN for this car shows no engine recall but is the exact same issue that has resulted in Hyundai engine recall with the 2.0 vehicles.

  16. Engine, Feb 15, 2025

Despite proper maintenance, at 100k miles the engine started knocking aggressively and the dealership advised me not to drive it or it would throw a rod in the very near future. It started burning oil around 80k miles. This is the Limited model with the gamma engine that was not included in the recalls of the other Tuscon engine, but seems to have the same problem.

  17. Engine, Feb 7, 2025

The engine entered limp mode, lost oil pressure and began knocking. Vehicle was brought to a dealer where it remained for ~1 month. The dealer inspected the vehicle, and determined it to be a valve cover leak, which does not track given the issues. When picked up from the dealer, the engine seized shortly down the road. Upon my own inspection, it was found that the engine oil drain plug was missing. It is unclear if the dealer loosened the drain plug during their inspection, or if it fell out due to some other issue. In either case, the manufacturer and their representative (dealership) created a dangerous situation for the driver of that vehicle, which had to be pushed out of moving traffic during a busy time of day.

  18. Engine, Jan 25, 2025

Within last oil change the engine had oil consumption and has a loud engine knocking sound. The upcoming oil change date had not been exceeded and/or miles had not been exceeded. The engine knock caused me to pull over immediately at a location on a highly traveled road and no shoulder or safe spot which was dangerous. Safety was a concern because I had to wait for a tow truck in cold winter weather. The local Hyundai dealership maintenance person said it was a known issue with that make and model and the repair wait time is 5 months because they don't have enough staff and cannot get parts. My tuscan just had an inspection at the last oil change on 10/22/2024. no report from Hyundai that the oil level was an issue or engine having problems. There not any warning lights or low level lights and/or noises until it suddenly happened.

  19. Engine, Jan 24, 2025

Engine knocking began around 132,000 miles and caused intermittent loss of power while driving. This caused me to slow down at random intervals while on the roadway becoming a hazard for other drivers. Engine light activated shortly before the symptoms began. No inspections done yet.

  20. Engine, Jan 21, 2025

Massive engine failure on well maintained vehicle. Vehicle has been inspected by two mechanics, one private and one dealership. Both recommend engine replacement.

  21. Engine, Jan 20, 2025

KSDS system continuously going off saying the knock sensor needs to be replaced and puts the car in limp mode. The car continuously going into limp mode even after knock sensor is replaced.

  22. Engine, Jan 14, 2025

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that several months after purchasing the vehicle, the vehicle was shaking abnormally while started. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that there was an abnormal amount of carbon build up on the valves and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

  23. Power train, Engine, Jan 12, 2025

The transmission in my vehicle failed while driving and the car completely shut off while driving. Less than 4 months after replacing the transmission with a brand new transmission, the engine failed while driving on the highway. The engine started sputtering, then it started smoking, then the car stalled.

  24. Power train, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Jan 11, 2025

Greetings, I have had issues with the Hyundai Tucson 2017 I own for many months. Issues include among others an abnormal knocking noise from the engine, reduced engine power and/or hesitation, burning smell, oil leaking, and smoke coming out of the engine, misfires, and other issues. It happened many times on the highway and almost caused accidents and the last time it happened, the vehicle was towed, and recently the smoke coming from the engine forced me to pull over. I reported the issue to the dealer but they didn't recall or address the issue. The car has been maintained properly over time and now I fear for my life. It is totally unfair that about 100k of this brand have been recalled for the same issue, in my case it is just after I finished to pay in full the vehicle. I seek your support to have it addressed for safety

  25. Engine, Dec 27, 2024

I am constantly having to add oil to my car. It burns oil. It is not leaking oil. I have 81000 miles on my car. I get my oil changed regularly.
