Recalls and investigations

  1. EngineSep 17, 2021

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017 Tucson and Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage.

A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the defect on November 16, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed January 15, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 209.

  2. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/modulePark outsideSep 4, 2020

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) recalled certain 2019-2021 Tucson vehicles on September 4, 2020. On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally and cause an electrical short, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.

An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury or crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HECU fuse. For 2019-2021 model years, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software will also be updated. Recall repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began November 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 195.

  3. Electrical system, wiringNov 21, 2016

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Tucson vehicles manufactured May 19, 2015, to November 14, 2016, and 2017 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured November 28, 2015, to November 14, 2016. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness that, due to a malfunction of the tow hitch module, may result, in the trailer brake lights being constantly illuminated. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

If the trailer brake lights stay illuminated while being used, other drivers may be confused, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected accessory trailer hitch wiring harnesses, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 13, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 153.

  1. Seats, Jun 9, 2024

Driver Seat (where your bottom sits) has lateral movement during cornering. Dealer repaired /replaced parts initally under warranty, but issue is reoccuring again... As a senior citizen; this gives an uncomfortable feeling with driver postioning.

  2. Fuel/propulsion system, Jun 6, 2024

6 June 2024 - Sudden severe loss of engine power while driving, presenting potentially serious safety hazard in traffic situations. Check engine light illuminated during incident (not blinking). Driver was able to pull to side of road and shut off car, then after 2 attempts car re-cranked. Driver was able to crank and drive 5 miles home. Check engine code P1233 stored & retrieved by scanner, indicating fuel pump issue -- (potentially a low pressure fuel pump leak similar to Hyundai TSB 23-FL-004H?), which may present fire hazard from leaking fuel. Visual inspection of high pressure pump in engine bay - no noticed problems. Visual / olfactory inspection of area around gas tank - no noticed problems or smell of fuel, no indication of leaking. Briefly cranked engine, no noticeable leaks or sounds. No check engine light (though P1233 stored).

  3. Engine, Jun 6, 2024

Engine blew up before oil change was required and car is under 100,000 miles Engine presumably failed on the way home from work, was making a sound. Parked the car, got in the next morning to take it to the repair shop. Check engine light came on during transit. They called and said there was a rod bearing failure and advised that I have it towed to Hyundai for possible warranty work. Car will be repaired in 4-6 weeks. Nalley Hyundai in Lithonia Georgia is not able to provide a loaner car as there are 11 people on the waiting list before me. I have 2 kids and a full-time job. I now have no car for 2 months.

  4. Engine, Jun 6, 2024

Tucson currently has 98,000 miles on the engine and is burning extreme amounts of oil. Oil consumption issues became known as early as 75,000. Per 1,000 miles of driving, the Hyundai dealership notes the car is losing over 2 quarts of oil. I have been having to return to the dealership every 1,000 miles to be monitored. I have already had to pay replace my catalytic converter, which I believe was a result of the excess rate of oil burn from the engine. I have also had to pay to replace the oil gaskets in the oil pan even though there was no noticeable sign that the engine was leaking oil. I am now being told I am going to need to have an engine head cleaning repair that will take several days. Once that is complete, I will have to undergo continued oil consumption testing to determine the results. They are requesting I produce my service records or Hyundai will not cover the repairs. Almost all of the service on this vehicle was done at the dealership and I was never notified of any issue with oil consumption. A separate mechanic, while performing a quote, did an oil change and noted the car was completely out of oil. This engine is well known for its oil consumption issues and Hyundai does not seem to want to take responsibility for their defective engine.

  5. Power train, May 28, 2024

The car would hesitate to accelerate causing the engine to rev high and then take off. It had gotten progressively worse with no error codes detected. With a lack of code, nothing could be done. My daughter was not comfortable driving the car due to the fact it had gotten so bad so I was driving her to school. While going 50 mph the engine started to rev high then completely died with no error or warning. I was able to coast off safely, however an inexperienced driver may not have been able to do the same. A recall needs to be issued ASAP before there are more serious consequences.

  6. Structure, May 28, 2024

Door latch assembly failed and will not allow driver side door to be opened after locking. Door must be opened from inside to get in. Both rear doors were already repaired several years ago for same issue under warranty but that has now expired.

  7. Engine, May 22, 2024

Engine has been burning through oil fast, requiring me to add oil every couple of weeks. 2 difference service places have told me this and also told me to contact Hyundai to file a complaint, as many other 2017 Hyundai Tucsons have recalls out for the same reason. This could cause an engine to fail if oil burns all the way out without my knowledge - safety hazard for me and others on the road. Car also sputters and struggles to accelerate at times, which has been an issue since getting the car in 2020. Please consider recalling to fix said issues.

  8. Service brakes, Hydraulic, May 13, 2024

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at approximately 60 MPH, the ABS, and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) warning lights and several other unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact stated was able to continue driving; however, the warning lights remained illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle to a local dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the warning lights illuminated and then started flashing. Additionally, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle hesitated before gaining forward momentum. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V543000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.

  9. Wheels, Engine, May 7, 2024

Have been driving the vehicle for nearly a year but while driving my motor blew exhausting blue all black smoke and then when I turn the car off the car was completely dead when I was getting it towed it could not be told because both of the front wheels had locked and no matter if I put the vehicle in neutral the car will not move come to find out that the bearing ride has shot a hole through the motor block. Took the vehicle to two different Hyundai dealership was told the same thing that no one would take the vehicle or trade it in for an the value for another vehicle that I was stuck with the vehicle and had to pay for the damages which was about 12 Grand also vehicle has been down in my driveway for the last year now cuz Hyundai refused to pay it without $190 diagnostic fee again on top of 12 Grand to replace my motor and the vehicle is not even worth all that money when I don't have much left to pay on it even though I only had the vehicle for only 2 years now but only driven it for only one. Lastly I've also read where there was a recall on these vehicles for the the baron rod and the engine malfunction as well as a new system being put into this these vehicles I was not aware of these recalls because it purchase of this vehicle was right when the recall window had closed and I ended up having a problem now they won't do anything about it can someone please do something about this vehicle.

  10. Engine, May 6, 2024

Had had the vehicle approximately four months (purchased at Irwin Dealership in Laconia, NH) when the vehicle would not start. It was rendered non-functional. It was “repaired” in February 2023. When picked up in Feb after Irwin dealership in Laconia, NH had had it for almost 3 wks, they told me it had carbon buildup. It had only been driven about 4,000 miles since it had been purchased on [XXX], 2022. They changed the oil (oil changes are recommended every 5,000 miles). It died again on [XXX], 2023; again it had been driven less than 4,000 miles and was not yet due for an oil change. It has been there since. They (Irwin) wanted service records, I told them all I had from prior to purchase was the carfax, and that they had performed the only service because I hadn't driven it long enough to have even had a second oil change. When Irwin submitted documents to Hyundai, they indicated the issues with the car were due to neglect and poor maintenance. Hyundai refused to replace the engine citing that I had failed to provide service records. The car remains at the dealership, despite payments being made on a vehicle that can not be used. 11. Power train, May 3, 2024

My engine began consuming oil at a faster rate. My miles per gallon decreased. Then while driving, my engine lost power, and then the check engine light came on without warning. Pulled into the closet mechanic (less than 2 miles) and mechanic found that I had lost all compression in cylinder 3 of my engine and that there was a large carbon build up. My engine just failed. I bring my Tucson in every 5000 miles for service.

  12. Engine, May 2, 2024

I religiously come into a auto repair shop for oil changes. Well before my next scheduled change, my engine started to make thumping noises. I filled up the engine with oil before taking it in to the auto body shop. The shop informed me that the engine needs to be replaced. They also informed me that this seems to be a recurring issue with Hyundai's and that a lot of owners are experiencing high oil needs for their engines. Neither my check oil light or check engine light notified me that there was low oil before the damage occured on my engine. I have filed a report with Hyundai as well and am still waiting to hear back from them.

  13. Other or unspecified, Apr 30, 2024

Passenger side back door will not open from the inside or outside when unlocked. No damage or accident history. Those in the back seat are unable to exit the vehicle in a safe or timely manner. No warnings or messages about this problem. According to Hyundai forums, this is a common issue.

  14. Visibility/wiper, Apr 29, 2024

The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.

  16. Engine, Apr 24, 2024

The engine sustained a crack and oil was leaking out of a cylinder. Initially thought to have been an oil problem since the check oil light would come on. Vehicle was taken to a dealer where they determined it was a bad cylinder. They did not have the correct tools to get into the block so they kept the vehicle for over a month. They returned the vehicle back and shortly after the issue started to happen again. The engine was knocking really loud and cannot accelerate over 40 miles an hour. We took it back to the dealer where they determined that it was a faulty engine and had requested all of the oil change and maintenance records. This vehicle had been taken back to the dealership on multiple occasions for routine maintenance. Talking to the maintenance technicians they could not find any record of us taking the vehicle there mentioning that the dealership had changed hands. We had records from oil changes at one other location but the dealership deemed negligence for the engine failure. This is about a three-year-old case and car was ay 109,00 miles

  17. Engine, Apr 15, 2024

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving approximately 72 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated and there was a knocking sound coming from the engine. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was recommended that the vehicle be taken to another dealer. The vehicle was taken to another dealer however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that on another occasion while driving approximately 60 MPH, there was a popping sound and smoke before the engine exploded. The vehicle was pulled to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was towed to another dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact discovered Technical Service Bulletin: 20-01-024H-1, however, the vehicle was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 114,282.

  18. Other or unspecified, Engine, Apr 15, 2024

After owning my vehicle for 4 years, it has started burning oil. Burning about 2 quarts every 14 days. Was directed by dealership to perform oil consumption test every 1000 miles, which is all logged through the dealership and was sent on my way. The problem is now affecting my spark plugs and could packs. After all we're replaced/changed, when plugs are removed, they are covered in oil and are fried! Hyundai has not addressed the issue, but many consumers have this same problem.

  19. Engine, Apr 10, 2024

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the vehicle started to lose motive power. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and was able to restart the vehicle after 5 minutes. The contact attempted to drive the vehicle to the residence but had to continually restart the vehicle. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine). The local dealer was contacted and informed the contact that there were no engine recalls associated with the vehicle. The contact also stated that the dealer would not repair the vehicle due to the vehicle being over the warranty coverage. The manufacturer was not made of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

  20. Engine and engine cooling, Apr 10, 2024

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that heavy, black smoke would emit from the tailpipe upon the start of the vehicle without warning. Upon inspection of the vehicle, the contact discovered that the oil level was low. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where a diagnostic test was performed, and the diagnostic test showed that the vehicle was consuming excessive amounts of engine oil. The contact was informed to bring the vehicle back to the dealer every 1,000 miles to track the oil consumption. The oil gasket, oil filter, and oil pan were replaced; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact back to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000

  21. Engine, Apr 4, 2024

  22. Engine, Apr 3, 2024

There's a known leak with oil in the engine, this was brought to the dealers attention and they said it was a known issue however no fixes were avaliable. While driving on the highway without warning I lost accelerator access. The car wouldn't go. The engine started knocking and would not propel forward. It was advised after diagnostics were done that two of my cylinders lost compression and therefore the engine was blown. They said this is a highly known issue with Hyundai Tucson 1.6T engines. I've lost money, time and work behind this ordeal.

  23. Engine, Forward collision avoidance, Apr 3, 2024

I purchased my vehicle on Feb 17th and 2 weeks later the engine shut down on me and wouldnt restart. My mechanic said that i need a new engine.

  24. Electrical system, Apr 1, 2024

I am writing to report a serious issue with our 2017 Hyundai Tucson. As the first and only owners of this vehicle, we have diligently maintained it through authorized dealerships. However, in May 2023, while driving on the highway, the car suddenly lost power and would not accelerate beyond 30 mph. There were no warning lights or indications prior to this incident. My wife managed to pull the car to the side of the road and slowly drove it to the dealership. Despite having only 30,000 miles on the odometer from personal use, we were shocked to learn that the engine had suffered significant damage due to low engine oil. Notably, we had recently serviced the vehicle at the same dealership just a few months earlier. The dealership informed us that the engine needed replacement, but the process took nearly a year. During this time, we were left without our vehicle, causing considerable inconvenience and financial hardship due to renting replacement vechile . We find it concerning that an engine failure occurred despite our regular maintenance and adherence to authorized service centers. We kindly request an investigation into this matter and hope that steps can be taken to prevent similar incidents for other Hyundai Tucson owners. Additionally, we urge Hyundai to address this issue promptly and transparently.

  25. Engine, Mar 30, 2024

We purchased a 2017 Hyundai Tuscon in April 2023 with 79 k miles. Realized after a short time that it was consuming too much oil. Started doing some research and found that this has been a problem for many Hyundai/Kia engines. We were checking the oil often and topping it off as needed plus, oil changes at 3000 miles. There were no check engine lights on and no leaks of fluids on the ground, no loss of power. Fast forward to March 2024. Driving down the interstate on a trip the engine just shuts off. Luckily my daughter was able to make it to the shoulder without getting hit by another car. The vehicle would not restart. I started looking for someone to tow the vehicle a State Trooper stopped to assist her and her passengers. Vehicle was towed. Mechanic charged the battery, checked the terminals, tested the alternator, and the belt. All were good. No idea why it just shut off. After charging battery for an hour, she was able to limp the Tuscon to the nearest dealership. The vehicle started losing power going uphill and regained speed on the flat areas on the way to dealership. The Hyundai dealer diagnosed the issue as leaking valve seal, oil soaked ignition coil causing the misfire which then started to plug up catalytic converter and fouling the spark plugs. I told the service person I will be contacting Hyundai and she said that the diagnosis did not qualify for the engine replacement and the estimate to repair was $5600. While we were there we checked into trading in. We paid $16,000 in April 2023 with 79k miles. March of 2024 Kelly Blue Book says it’s worth only $8300 (93k mileage) and they offered $4000 trade. Loan balance is $14,000. This incident could have caused my daughter and her passengers (one was an infant) to get into a horrific accident on the Interstate with traffic driving 70 mph. Now we are dealing with this economic hardship. My research shows many of the engines of various models of Hyundai and Kia’s are failing. No current recalls!
