Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Power train, automatic transmissionJun 13, 2019

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.2L engines. In the event that a clutch becomes stuck in the transmission, the transmission software may shift the transmission to neutral.

An unexpected shift to neutral would result in a loss of drive, increasing the risk of crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the transmission software, free of charge. The recall began August 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is V69.

  4. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S55.

WHILE ACCELERATING ON THE HIGHWAY, MY VEHICLE ENGAGED IN TO PARK. MY VEHICLE WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING BUT SLOW DOWN TO A ROLL. I WAS ABLE TO BRAKE, BUT THE VEHICLE BECAME IDLE.

  2. Other or unspecified, Electronic stability control (ESC), Engine, Apr 4, 2019

AROUND 4:30 PM, AFTER JUST A FEW SECONDS OF LEAVING MY DRIVEWAY, A MESSAGE CAME ON THAT STATED I NEEDED TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK BEFORE I COULD SHIFT GEARS AND THEN MY BATTERY LIGHT AND ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I PULLED OVER, PUT VEHICLE INTO PARK & THEN SHUT IT OFF. RESTARTED IT, BUT STRUGGLED TO START.. ATTEMPTED TO RESTART A THIRD TIME BUT WAS DEAD. TURNED THE KEY TO RUN TO SEE WHAT LIGHTS STAYED ON THE DASHBOARD THE BATTERY WAS STILL ON WHILE THE ENGINE LIGHT DISAPPEARED. AFTER WAITING ABOUT A HALF HOUR, MY FATHER IN LAW WAS ABLE TO GIVE ME A JUMP. CAR STARTED AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE GET THE BATTERY REPLACED. HOWEVER I READ LAST NIGHT SIMILAR COMPLAINTS, WITH THE BATTERY NOT BEING THE ISSUE SO MY HUSBAND WILL BE GETTING THE PREVIOUS BATTERY WE HAD, TESTED THIS WEEKEND.

  3. Power train, Electrical system, Engine, Apr 3, 2019

THE CAR WILL BEGIN TO HESITATE AND THEN THE TRANSMISSION WILL GO INTO A NEUTRAL STATE, BUT THE LIGHTS WILL NOT SHOW THAT IT IS IN NEUTRAL. THE CAR WILL ROLL FORWARD OR BACKWARD DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE. YOU CANNOT SHIFT, WHEN YOU DO TRY TO SHIFT, THE CAR WILL JOLT LIKE THE ENGINE IS GOING TO FALL OUT OF THE CAR. TURNING THE ENGINE OFF AND ON, SEVERAL TIMES, WHILE WAITING EACH TIME CLEARS THE PROBLEM. JEEP CAN NOT REPRODUCE THIS IT SO THEY WILL NOT FIX IT. WILL GET A MESSAGE ON DASH STATING TO SERVICE TRASMISSION AND PARKING BREAK. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 5 TIMES THAT I HAVE DOCUMENTED BY PICTURES AND VIDEO ON MY PHONE HOWEVER, HAS HAPPENED A LOT MORE. SPECIFIC DATES DOCUMENTED ARE 11/19/17, 11/21/17, 11/29/17, 12/13/18, 4/2/19.

  5. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Mar 28, 2019

THIS CAR CONTINUES TO TURN OFF WHILE I AM DRIVING! TODAY IT TURNED OFF ON ME ON AN INTERSECTION! THE CAR JERKED, STARTED TO SHAKE & THEN MANY LIGHTS CAME ON. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, THE BATTERY LIGHT, THE BRAKE LIGHT, MANY MORE (PLEASE SEE PICTURE ATTACHED) I BOUGHT THE CAR AT CARMAX. HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE IN NOVEMBER OF 2018, GOT THE CAR SERVICED UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. NOW, 4 MONTHS LATER THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED. IN NOVEMBER, THEY INFORMED ME THE ISSUE WAS THE CAR FUEL INJECTOR & A BAD SENSOR IN THE TRANSMISSION. TODAY'S ISSUES IS STILL UNKNOWN, AS THE CAR HAS TO BE SENT OFF FOR EVALUATION. BUT TODAY WAS A VERY SCARY SITUATION FOR ME! I WOULD HATE THIS TO HAPPEN TO ANYONE WITH CHILDREN IN THE CAR!

  6. Engine, Mar 10, 2019

I WAS DRIVING AROUND 9:30PM ON WEDNESDAY FROM CLASS BACK HOME (12-15 MIN DRIVE) ON A BUSY HIGHWAY (GA 400). I HEAR A DING AND LOOKED DOWN AND NOTICED THAT MY VEHICLE BEGAN TO DECELERATE FROM 65 MPH, I WAS UNABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CAR STAYED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE SERVICED AND THAT THERE WAS ALSO AN ISSUE WITH THE PARK SHIFT. THE D LIGHT ON THE GEAR SHIFT ALSO BEGAN TO BLINK; THE VEHICLEE CASE TO A COMPLETE STOP IN THE MIDDLE LANE ON THE HIGHWAY, I HAD TO CALL THE POLICE TO COME AND BLOCK THE HIGHWAY AND HAVE SOMEONE MOVE THE VEHICLE. WHEN WE ATTEMPTED TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE AGAIN IT BEGAN TO MOVE BACKWARDS THIS TIME. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT IN WHICH MY JEEP BEGAN TO DECELERATE, THE FIRST TIME WAS A FEW MONTHS AGO LAST YEAR (OCT/NOV), THE CAR DID THE SAME THING ON A BUSY ROAD WHERE IT BEGAN TO DECELERATE AND WOULDN'T PICK UP ANY SPEED WHATSOEVER WHEN GASSED. ONCE I TRIED TO TURN IT BACK ON AND DRIVE THE VECHICLE IT BEGAN TO MOVE BACKWARDS IN DRIVE. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO KEEP AND THEY SAID THE ISSUE WAS BATTERY RELATED AND 'FIXED' IT, I PICKED IT UP A FEW DAYS LATER AND THE CAR BEGAN TO DECELERATE THE SAME DAY WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAD TO GET IT TOWED BACK TO JEEP; I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE IS NO ISSUE AND IT SEEMED THAT THEY MISSED A STEP UPON FIXING THE BATTERY. I INQUIRED WHETHER THIS IS PART OF THE ISSUES PEOPLE FACED WHEN IT WAS RECALLED IN 2014/2015 AND WAS TOLD NO. I ASKED IF THEY'RE SURE IT IS SAFE TO DRIVE AND THEY INSISTED THAT IT WAS.

  7. Steering, Engine, Mar 8, 2019

I AM THE OWNER OF A 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE. IN THE TWO YEARS SINCE I'VE OWNED MY CAR, I'VE EXPERIENCED 30+ INSTANCES IN WHICH MY CAR STOPS WORKING IN THE MIDDLE OF OPERATION. IT'S HAPPENED WHILE I'VE BEEN DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, IN THE MIDDLE OF INTERSECTIONS, AND JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER TYPE OF ROAD POSSIBLE. IT USUALLY OCCURS AFTER I MAKE A TURN OR COME TO A HARD STOP. THE CAR WILL IMMEDIATELY, AND COMPLETELY RANDOMLY, COME TO A STOP. THE WHEEL WILL NO LONGER WORK, NOR WILL THE ENGINE. IT COMES WITH NO WARNING. I WILL THEN HAVE TO TURN MY CAR ON AND OFF SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE I CAN GET IT IN MOTION AGAIN. I'VE TAKEN IT TO MULTIPLE MECHANICS AND THE ONLY SOLUTION SEEMS TO BE TO GET AN OIL CHANGE, THOUGH I AM NOT QUITE DUE FOR ONE WHEN THIS HAPPENS. AFTER RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I'VE FOUND THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE AMONGST JEEP OWNERS AND THE CAR IS EATING THROUGH AN ABNORMAL AMOUNT OF OIL. JEEP IS WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND HAS DONE NOTHING TO FIX IT. THE JEEP DEALERS I'VE TAKEN MY CAR TO DON'T GIVE ANY ALTERNATIVES TO FIXING THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED OR SEVERELY INJURED AS A RESULT OF THIS.

MULTIPLE TIMES AFTER FUELING UP MY VEHICLE MY CAR WILL START TO SHAKE AND SPUTTER AND JUST STALL. HAS HAPPENED WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY WITH MY FAMILY AND ALMOST CAUSED A BAD WRECK. MOST RECENTLY IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON LOCAL STREETS. DEALER KEEPS SAYING THEY CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT BUT I VIDEOTAPED THE ISSUE. ALSO WHEN FUELING UP THE VEHICLE IT GIVES A PROBLEM AND TAKES FOREVER TO FUEL UP AND SPITS GAS OUT AND BACK ON TO ME . I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR ANYMORE WITH MY FAMILY AND FCA DOESN'T WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THERE IS AN ISSUE AND SAYS JUST FILL THE TANK UP ONLY 3/4 .. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE !!

  16. Electrical system, Electronic stability control (ESC), Engine, Nov 27, 2018

BROUGHT VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS ON SEVERAL OCASSIONS WITH COMPLAINTS OF VEHICLE JUMPING INTO GEAR. RECENTLY HAD TO REPLACE THE BATTERY BECAUSE VEHICLE WOULDN'T STAY RUNNING AND COULD NOT PUT INTO GEAR. VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE IT WAS LEAKING OIL. HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE OIL COOLER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT THE DRIVE SHAFT IS NOISY AND SHOULD BE REPLACED AND THAT THE AIR TEMPERATURE AMBIENT SENSOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I GAVE THE GO AHEAD TO REPLACE THE OIL COOLER AND AIR TEMPERATURE AMBIENT SENSOR. TOLD THEM TO HOLD OFF ON REPLACING THE DRIVE SHAFT AS THE REPAIR ALONE FOR THE OIL COOLER AND SENSOR WAS GOING TO BE APPROXIMATELY $1,300. I THEN RECEIVED A CALL BACK AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY CHANGED THE OIL COOLER AND UPON TRYING TO START THE VEHICLE IT DIDN'T WANT TO START. THEY TOLD ME MULTIPLE CODES WERE COMING UP AND THAT MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT AN ADDITIONAL COST OF OVER $1,000. ESTIMATE FOR ALL REPAIRS TO BE $2,500 PLUS. WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IS A SPECIAL ORDER AND ONCE ORDERED THEY WOULD HAVE TO HOLD MY VEHICLE FOR TWO WEEKS UNTIL IT CAME IN AND COULD BE INSTALLED. IT IS COSTING ME $35.00 A DAY FOR A RENTAL VEHICLE THROUGH THEM. I ESTIMATE TOTAL COST FOR REPAIRS AND RENTAL TO BE ABOUT $3,000. THIS COST DOES NOT INCLUDE THE REPLACING THE DRIVE SHAFT WHICH THEY TELL ME IS NOISY.

MY JEEP CHEROKEE KEEPS REPEATING THE SAME PROBLEMS. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. SOMETIMES I AM TERRIFIED TO DRIVE BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. TODAY AND ON OTHER DAYS, THE JEEP HAS CUT OFF ON ME A FEW TIMES WHILE IN MOTION ON A CITY STREET AND SOMETIMES WHEN TURNING. THE VEHICLE SLAMS INTO GEAR WHEN DRIVING SOMETIMES AND FEELS LIKE I AM GETTING HIT IN THE REAR OF THE CAR. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. TODAY, THE JEEP ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WHEN IT JUST STOPPED ON ITS OWN. ADDITIONALLY, IT OFTEN SHIFTS GEARS ERRATICALLY AND VERY ROUGH, EVEN JERKING AT TIMES. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY DID A SOFTWARE UPDATE BUT THIS DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. I HAVE TAKEN TO THE DEALER AT LEAST THREE TIMES ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND I KEEP GETTING STALLED SAYING EITHER COME BACK IN 500 MILES SO THE CAN DO AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST OR THAT THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. EACH TIME I TAKE IT IN THEY SAY THE DID A SOFTWARE UPDATE OR AN OIL CHANGE. THE PROBLEM REMAINS.

I WAS STOPPED AT A LIGHT. WHEN I DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR, WARNING LIGHTS FLASHED ON MY DASH, THE ENGINE STALLED AND A MESSAGE TO "SHIFT TO P THEN DESIRED GEAR". CAR WAS HARD TO START AFTERWARDS, ISSUE HAPPENED 3 MORE TIMES ON THE WAY BACK HOME (LESS THAN 1 MILE). CAR HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. I DID RESEARCH ONLINE AND THIS APPEARS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE TRANSMISSION. HOPEFULLY WILL STILL BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

OIL FILTER HOUSING ASSEMBLY IS LEAKING. YOU CAN SEE OIL LEAKING OUT OF A PORT WHILE RUNNING. OIL IS PUDDLING UP AND RUNNING DOWN THE MOTOR. THIS CAN CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE OR A FIRE.. THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED CERTIFIED PRE OWNED; I AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS STIL UNDER WARRANTY. DEFINITELY IS A SAFETY HAZARD ALSO THE TRANSMISSION ON OCCASION SHIFTS REALLY HARD WHEN MOVING FROM ONE GEAR TO THE NEXT.

I WAS IN THE TURNING LANE TO TURN INTO A GROCERY STORE AND WHEN I ACCELERATED TO TURN MY JEEP ACCELERATED THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT, SERVICE PARKING BRAKE LIGHT,THERE WERE SEVERAL LIGHTS THAT CAME ON AND MY JEEP WAS STILL RUNNING BUT STOPPED ACCELERATING AS I WAS TURNING INTO THE STORE ON A BUSY 4 LANE ROAD AND I WAS PUSHING THE GAS BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE I COASTED INTO THE START OF THE PARKING LOT WHERE IT WAS NOW TELLING ME TO SHIFT MY CAR INTO PARK AS I DID THEN SHIFTED BACK TO DRIVE AND TRIED TO FINISH PULLING INTO THE STORE PARKING LOT AND STILL NOTHING. SO I PUT THE VEHICLE INTO PARK SHUT IT OFF SAT FOR A MIN TURNED IT BACK ON PLACED IT BACK IN DRIVE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL ON SO I DROVE IT TO THE NEAREST AUTO ZONE TO GET THE CODE CHECKED BECAUSE IT WAS A SUNDAY (TODAY 10/7/18) AND THE DEALER SHIP IS CLOSED. THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND A CODE AND ONCE THE JEEP WAS TURNED BACK ON ALL LIGHTS WERE OFF. I DROVE IT HOME AND PARKED IT AND I AM TAKING IT TO THE DEAL SHIP TOMORROW. 2 WEEKS AGO THURSDAY SEPT 27TH MY CAR STALLED AND SHUT OFF AT A STOP LIGHT WHILE TAKING MY KIDS TO SCHOOL THE MORNING AFTER FILLING MY CAR WITH GAS. IT STARTED BACK UP IMMEDIATELY THEN SHOOK LIKE IT MAY DIE AGAIN THEN NOTHING. NO LIGHT INDICATORS AT ALL CAME ON DURING THAT INCIDENT SO I FIGURED IT COULD HAVE BEEN BAD GAS AND THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT SINCE I DIDN'T HAVE ANY OTHER TROUBLE TIL TODAY. MY CHILDREN WERE WITH ME BOTH TIMES AND WE GOT LUCKY THIS INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED TODAY SUNDAY OCT 7TH 2018 WE DID NOT GET HIT BECAUSE I BARELY MADE IT INTO THE PARKING.
