Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Power train, automatic transmissionJun 13, 2019

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.2L engines. In the event that a clutch becomes stuck in the transmission, the transmission software may shift the transmission to neutral.

An unexpected shift to neutral would result in a loss of drive, increasing the risk of crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the transmission software, free of charge. The recall began August 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is V69.

  4. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  1. Power train, Oct 10, 2018

SHIFTING HARD THROUGH THE GEARS. SOMETIMES NOT SHIFTING IN THE CORRECT ORDER. SURGING OR LURCHING FORWARD WHEN SHIFTING. GOING UP HILLS (20MPH) TRANSMISSION WILL STAY IN A HIGHER GEAR RESULTING IN LOW POWER. STARTING AT A STOP LIGHT TRANSMISSION WILL NOT GO INTO GEAR.

  2. Power train, Other or unspecified, Oct 8, 2018

WHEN DRIVING, ENGINE WILL RANDOMLY SHUT OFF AND DISPLAY WILL SHOW "SHIFT TO P THEN TO DESIRED GEAR". AT ONE TIME IT ALSO DISPLAYED "BATTERY LOW VOLTAGE" AGAIN, THIS HAPPENS RANDOMLY IN OUR SUBDIVISION AFTER ACCELERATING FROM A COMPLETE STOP OR TURNING.

  3. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Engine, Oct 7, 2018

I WAS IN THE TURNING LANE TO TURN INTO A GROCERY STORE AND WHEN I ACCELERATED TO TURN MY JEEP ACCELERATED THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT, SERVICE PARKING BRAKE LIGHT,THERE WERE SEVERAL LIGHTS THAT CAME ON AND MY JEEP WAS STILL RUNNING BUT STOPPED ACCELERATING AS I WAS TURNING INTO THE STORE ON A BUSY 4 LANE ROAD AND I WAS PUSHING THE GAS BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE I COASTED INTO THE START OF THE PARKING LOT WHERE IT WAS NOW TELLING ME TO SHIFT MY CAR INTO PARK AS I DID THEN SHIFTED BACK TO DRIVE AND TRIED TO FINISH PULLING INTO THE STORE PARKING LOT AND STILL NOTHING. SO I PUT THE VEHICLE INTO PARK SHUT IT OFF SAT FOR A MIN TURNED IT BACK ON PLACED IT BACK IN DRIVE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL ON SO I DROVE IT TO THE NEAREST AUTO ZONE TO GET THE CODE CHECKED BECAUSE IT WAS A SUNDAY (TODAY 10/7/18) AND THE DEALER SHIP IS CLOSED. THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND A CODE AND ONCE THE JEEP WAS TURNED BACK ON ALL LIGHTS WERE OFF. I DROVE IT HOME AND PARKED IT AND I AM TAKING IT TO THE DEAL SHIP TOMORROW. 2 WEEKS AGO THURSDAY SEPT 27TH MY CAR STALLED AND SHUT OFF AT A STOP LIGHT WHILE TAKING MY KIDS TO SCHOOL THE MORNING AFTER FILLING MY CAR WITH GAS. IT STARTED BACK UP IMMEDIATELY THEN SHOOK LIKE IT MAY DIE AGAIN THEN NOTHING. NO LIGHT INDICATORS AT ALL CAME ON DURING THAT INCIDENT SO I FIGURED IT COULD HAVE BEEN BAD GAS AND THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT SINCE I DIDN'T HAVE ANY OTHER TROUBLE TIL TODAY. MY CHILDREN WERE WITH ME BOTH TIMES AND WE GOT LUCKY THIS INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED TODAY SUNDAY OCT 7TH 2018 WE DID NOT GET HIT BECAUSE I BARELY MADE IT INTO THE PARKING.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE SHOOK AND JERKED, AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. IN ADDITION, THE SERVICE SHIFTER WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE MESSAGES "SHIFT TO PARK" AND "DESIRED GEAR" WERE DISPLAYED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER (ROCKWALL CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM, 970 E INTERSTATE 30, ROCKWALL, TX 75087, (469) 698-2100) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SHIFTING PAD AND BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 35190705. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 61,730. **TR UPDATED 11/19/18*JB

  7. Power train, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 22, 2018

WHEN REFUELING THE VEHICLE WOULD SHUT OFF PREMATURELY AS IF IT WAS FULL AFTER ON 1-2 TENTHS OF A GALLON. TO FILL UP THE TANK TOOK ABOUT 10 MINUTES BECAUSE OF THIS MALFUNCTIONING. SOON AFTER THIS THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO DEFAULT AND SHIFT TO NEUTRAL WHICH IS A BAD THING WHEN CROSSING MULTIPLE LANES OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. WHAT I THOUGHT WAS SAFE I SOON LEARNED WAS A SERIOUS RISK TO OTHERS AS WELL AS MYSELF. THIS STARTED HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY AND A SOLUTION WAS NEVER FOUND. THE VEHICLE WOULD WORK FINE FOR A FEW WEEKS AND THEN THE VICIOUS CYCLE OF THE ONGOING ISSUE OF DEFAULTING TO NEUTRAL WHILE IN TRAFFIC WOULD OCCUR. JUST THE OTHER DAY THE DIAGNOSIS "POST WARRANTY" IDENTIFIED THAT THE VAPOR CANISTER AND FUEL PUMP WAS THE ISSUE. EARLIER I WAS TOLD THAT REPLACING THE BATTERY SOLVED THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, WHICH WASN'T TO BE. REPLACING THE VAPOR CANISTER, AND FUEL PUMP COST $1292.45 AND I'VE ONLY DRIVEN MY VEHICLE FROM THE DEALERSHIP TO THE GARAGE.

  8. Power train, Other or unspecified, Engine, Sep 21, 2018

WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, I WAS ON A CITY STREET, THE VEHICLE RANDOMLY STALLED WHILE DRIVING 10MPH. THE DASH SCREEN STATED, "PLACE IN 'P' THEN SELECT GEAR." I THEN PLACED THE CAR IN PARK AND TRIED TURNING THE IGNITION BUT IT DID NOT START. I HAD TO GET A STRANGER TO JUMP START MY CAR AND EVENTUALLY THE CAR STARTED. THIS HAPPENED A FEW MONTHS AGO AND SINCE THEN THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE. THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED, VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHILE PULLING INTO A GAS STATION ON A CITY STREET AND IT RANDOMLY STALLED. I TURNED THE IGNITION AND IT STARTED UP. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND THANKFULLY ON BOTH OCCASIONS THERE HAS BEEN NO CAR DRIVING BEHIND ME.

  9. Power train, Electronic stability control (ESC), Sep 15, 2018

SHIFT PARK BRAKE THEN SERVICE TRANSMISSION. IT CAME ON WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT THE VEHICLE AND CONTINUES TILL THIS DAY. WHEN I BRING IT IN THEY SAY IT'S A SOFTWARE UPDATE AND CONTINUES TO DO THE SAME THING. IT'S GETTING WORSE AND WORSE BY THE DAY AND I'M SCARED TO DRIVE MY OWN VEHICLE. I BOUGHT THE JEEP BECAUSE I HEARD THEY WERE GOOD LONG TERM VEHICLES. I'VE ONLY HAD THIS CAR FOR FOUR YEARS AND I KNOW I WILL NOT LET MY SON DRIVE IT!

  10. Power train, Service brakes, Sep 6, 2018

MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY AND SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND BEGAN SLOWING DOWN. FORTUNATELY NO ACCIDENT HAPPENED. THE DASHBOARD SHOWED THAT IT HAD TRANSMISION PROBLEMS. WHEN WE BOUGHT THE CAR WE MENTIONED THE SALES PERSON THAT WE FELT THAT THE TRANSMISSION WASN'T WORKING GOOD BUT HE ANSWERED WAS THAT THIS WAS SOMETHING NORMAL. THE DEALER FIXED THE BREAK BOOSTER ABOUT A YEAR AGO BUT THE CAR STILL SHOWS A LOW BREAK. THIS HAPPENED WHEN MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND THE CAR SUDDENLY STOPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET.

  11. Power train, Sep 6, 2018

TRANSMISSION HAVING PROBLEMS SHIFTING SINCE BRAND NEW. WHEN STARTING FROM PARKED POSITION, TRANSMISSION HESITATES WHEN TAKING OFF. WHEN GOING DOWN A HILL, THE TRANSMISSION WON'T SHIFT CAUSING THE RPMS TO BECOME VERY HIGH. (5000 + RPM). WHEN GOING UP A HILL AND VEHICLE NEEDS TO DOWN SHIFT, IT HAS TO COME TO A STOP OR DOES SHIFTS IN A HARD, UNUSUAL MANNER CAUSING A JERKING MOTION. VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES OVER ISSUE AND THEY DO A 'SOFTWARE UPDATE' EVERY TIME. THIS HAS NOT FIXED THE ISSUE.

  12. Power train, Sep 3, 2018

CAR LEASED DECEMBER 2013. IN AUGUST OF 2016 SERVICE 4WD LIGHT CAME ON. WAS DISMISSED MULTIPLE TIMES BY DEALER. CAR PURCHASED SEPTEMBER 2016. LIGHT ON AGAIN AND WAS TOLD TRANSMISSION FAILURE. TRANSMISSION REPLACED APRIL 2018. AFTER REPLACEMENT CAR CONTINUED TO JERK, SHIFT LOUDLY, SHIFT ITSELF WHEN TURNED ON. DEALER REFUSED TO SERVICE. NOW GOING INTO ARBITRATION WITH FCS.

  13. Power train, Aug 31, 2018

TRANSMISSION NOT SHIFTING, LURCHING, AND REVVING. VEHICLE HAS PROBLEMS REGULARLY WITH SHIFTING AT APPROPRIATE TIMES. SOMETIMES LURCHING FORWARD AND SOMETIMES NOT SHIFTING WHEN SPEEDING UP. HAPPENS REGULARLY.

  14. Power train, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 28, 2018

WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOPLIGHT THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON THE CAR SEEMED TO LOSE THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE PROPERLY. IT RESET ITSELF ONCE WE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THEN WITHIN THE NEXT FEW MILES, IT DID IT AGAIN, THE SAME SCENARIO. THEN IT DID IT AN AGAIN THE THIRD TIME AND IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE SO WE HAD TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND PUT IT IN PARK. IT WAS DANGEROUS BECAUSE WE WERE IN A VERY BUSY INTERSECTION THE THIRD TIME. IT HAS DONE IT SEVERAL OTHER OCCASIONS AND THE ONLY WAY WE CAN GET KEEP IT FROM DOING THAT AGAIN IS TO DRIVE IN MANUAL MODE.

  15. Power train, Engine, Aug 28, 2018

CAR STARTED TO LOOSE POWER WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE, ACTED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL, GIVING MORE GAS ONLY MADE THE PROBLEM WORSE. WAS NOT ABLE TO GO OVER 45 MPH UNLESS GOING DOWN HILL. HAD THE SAME PROBLEM 6 MONTHS AGO AND WAS COVERED BY WARRANTY. TOOK CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THIS TIME ITS NOT UNDER WARRANTY.

  16. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Aug 19, 2018

TRANSMISSION ISSUE CAUSING A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. WHILE BRAKING THE VEHICLE HAS AN ACCELERATION SURGE. IT ALSO DOES THIS WHILE COASTING AND THE TRANSMISSION GOES INTO A DOWNSHIFT. THERE ARE ALSO ISSUES WITH IT SHIFTING IN SEVERAL GEARS. THERE IS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON U0402. CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP TRIED TO PROGRAM THE TCM TWICE AND THE LIGHT COMES RIGHT BACK ON.

  17. Power train, Engine, Aug 18, 2018

THE CAR JERKS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY/LOCAL ROADS AND I HAVE REPORTED THIS MATTER TO THE CHRYSLER SERVICE CENTER WHERE I TAKE IT FOR MAINTENANCE AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET ANY APPOINTMENTS. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN ONGOING SINCE DECEMBER 2017 AND I REPORTED IT JANUARY 2018 WHEN I GOT IT SERVICED AT SMITHHAVEN CHRYSLER. I CALLED IN APRIL 2018 FOR APPOINTMENT AND WAS INFORMED THERE NOTHING UNTIL THE END OF MAY BUT I WAS LEAVING THE COUNTRY. CALLED AGAIN IN JUNE WHEN I RETURNED TO THE STATES AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING UNTIL AUGUST 27, I EXPLAINED TO THE SECRETARY THE PROBLEM WITH THE CAR AND SHE SAID "SORRY, THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO FOR YOU". SHE ALSO SAID THAT IF I DROPPED THE CAR OFF, I WOULDN'T GET THE CAR BACK FOR 2 WEEKS. I HAVE ALSO HAD A SOFTWARE UPDATE DONE AND THAT HELPED FOR ABOUT A MONTH.

  18. Power train, Aug 18, 2018

THE CAR CONSISTENTLY DOWNSHIFTS AND UPSHIFTS VIOLENTLY, ESPECIALLY WHEN LETTING OFF THE GAS. HAS ALSO STALLED A HANDFUL OF TIMES WHILE CRUISING AT SPEEDS <20MPH.

  19. Power train, Aug 16, 2018

VEHICLE READ "SERVICE TRANSMISSION" WHILE ON INTERSTATE GOING APPROX. 60MPH. TWO MILES LATER ALL POWER TO ENGINE STOPPED. NO PROBLEMS WITH POWER TO CAR, AIR CONDITIONING, RADIO, ETC. TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT ENGAGE CONSISTENTLY, BUT LUCKILY I MADE IT HOME. WHEN PRESSING GAS PEDAL, TACHOMETER WOULD NOT MOVE AND IF IT DID, IT WOULD ACCELERATE WITH WHAT FELT LIKE IDLING POWER - NO ABILITY TO TRULY ACCELERATE.

  20. Power train, Aug 7, 2018

VEHICLE ONCE AGAIN WENT INTO NEUTRAL WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. ALL THE SERVICE LIGHTS CAME ON. VEHICLE ROLLED TO A STOP AND SAID TRANSMISSION NEEDS SERVICE.

  21. Power train, Aug 6, 2018

AFTER COMING TO A STOP AND THEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE HESITATES AND WILL NOT RESPOND EVEN IF YOU PRESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FURTHER, THEN IT WILL BANG INTO GEAR AND LURCH FORWARD. THE SAFETY ISSUE IS THAT YOU CAN NOT TIME PULLING INTO TRAFFIC PROPERLY BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT PREDICT IF YOU WILL HAVE POWER AVAILABLE OR NOT AND THEN THE BANG CAN MOVE YOU INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC UNEXPECTEDLY.

  22. Power train, Aug 5, 2018, crash

OUR TEENAGE BOYS WERE TRAVELING AT A SAFE SPEED, DID NOT HIT A POTHOLE OR OTHER OBJECT, AND DID NOT SWERVE WHEN THE RIGHT FRONT AXLE SNAPPED.
