Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Power train, automatic transmissionJun 13, 2019

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.2L engines. In the event that a clutch becomes stuck in the transmission, the transmission software may shift the transmission to neutral.

An unexpected shift to neutral would result in a loss of drive, increasing the risk of crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the transmission software, free of charge. The recall began August 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is V69.

  4. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

WAS DRIVING HOME LAST SATURDAY NIGHT. 10-26-19, ALL OF THE SUDDEN ANTILOCK LIGHT WARNING APPEARED, PARKING BRAKE WARNING, 4X4 SYSTEM. TRACTION CONTROL, AND SERVICE TRANSMISSION WARNING. I PULLED OVER, SHUT VEHICLE OFF, ONCE RESTARTED IT WAS ALL OFF, THEN I DROVE ABOUT 10 MILES UP.THE ROAD. IT CAME ON AGAIN ALL LIGHTS AND WARNINGS, WHEN YOUR DRIVING BETWEEN 40-55 MPH, IT SEEMS TO ACCELERATE AND THEN DECELERATE. AS IF SOMEONE WAS GIVING IT GAS AND THEN LETTING OFF OF THE PEDAL, IS HOW I CAN DESCRIBE IT. I STARTED IT ON TODAY 10-28-19, IT'S STILL DRIVING THE SAME WAY WITH ALL WARNING LIGHTS ON. CODE READER DOESN'T SHOW ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. VEHICLE HAS 61,640 MILES ON IT. 2.4L, 9 SPEED TRANSMISSION.

  2. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Other or unspecified, Oct 23, 2019

RECALL NUMBER 16V-529 HAS NOT BEEN REMEDIED FOR 3 YEARS, AND I'VE EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS ISSUES BECAUSE OF IT. JEEP WILL NOT LOOK AT IT FOR FREE DESPITE THE FACT THAT I'M AFFECTED BY THIS WARRANTY. MY CAR SHIFTS INTO NEUTRAL WHILE DRIVING FREQUENTLY, AND IT'S UNACCEPTABLE THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A FIX FOR THIS YET.

  3. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Sep 7, 2019

I HAVE A 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE LATITUDE AND TODAY ALL OF THE LIGHTS WERE ON ON MY SHIFTER, IT ALSO WAS PROPELLING IT SELF FORWARD WHILE I HAD THE BREAK DOWN IT DID THREE TIMES WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. YESTERDAY I SUBMITTED A DIFFERENT COMPLAINT ABOUT THE POWER TRAIN ACTING UP. TODAY THE POWER TRAIN BEGAN TO ACT UP AGAIN WHILE IN THE HIGHWAY . IT WASN'T SHIFTING AND FELT AS IF IT WAS DRIVING IN NEUTRAL BUT AT A VERY LOW SPEED WHILE THE RPM MOVED UP AND THE SPEED DIDN'T MOVE AT ALL. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING ISSUES.

  4. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Aug 31, 2019

SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING AND LOST POWER TO THE ENGINE. COULD NOT ACCELERATE. HAD TO PULL THE CAR OFF THE ROAD. WILL NOT RESET ITSELF. THE CAR IS UNDRIVEABLE. 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE

  5. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Aug 26, 2019

I HAVE A 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE WITH 71K MILES. FOR MORE THAN 6 MONTHS I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE CAR TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT TO SPEED, AND WHEN IT DOES THE RPM IS SO HIGH AND IT FEELS THAT THE ENGINE IS GOING TO BURN OUT. IT IS LIKE THE GEARS ARE STUCKED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT EVERYTHING WAS GOOD, EXCEPT MY ENGINE MOUNTS. I CHANGED THAT; HOWEVER, THE PROBLEMS CONTINUES. 5 DAYS AGO I HAD THE SERVICE SHIFTER MESSAGE COME UP ON MY SCREEN. IT HIGHLIGHTED ALL MY GEARS LIGHTS RED AND THE SCREEN WAS LOCKED TO SERVICE SHIFTER. THEY SAID THAT EVERYTHING WAS FINE, BUT OBVIOUSLY THE CAR HAVE SOME ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION.

  6. Vehicle speed control, Engine, Aug 21, 2019

TRANSMISSION SLIPS, CAUSING EXCESSIVE RPMS, ABRUPT AND JOLTING SHIFTS, AND SUDDEN VARIATIONS IN RPMS. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL YEARS. HAVE TIRED MULTIPLE TIMES GOING TO DEALER TO HAVE THE ISSUE SOLVED, BUT HAVE ONLY BEEN GIVEN NEW UPDATES WHICH HAVE FAILED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

  7. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Aug 5, 2019

WHEN DRIVING MY CAR, THE TRANSMISSION ROUGH SHIFTS UNEXPECTEDLY CAUSING A JERKING MOVEMENT, VERY SCARY TO DRIVE WHEN THIS HAPPENS.

  8. Power train, Electrical system, Vehicle speed control, Jul 24, 2019

MY PROBLEM STARTED ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO WHEN I WENT TO PUT MY CAR INTO REVERSE FROM PARK AFTER HAVING JUST STARTED IT AND IT DROVE FORWARD INSTEAD OF BACKWARDS. I HAD TO PUT IT BACK INTO PARK THEN BACK INTO REVERSE BEFORE IT WOULD GO BACKWARDS (NO I WAS NOT ON A HILL I WAS FLAT, THE CAR WAS ACTING AS THOUGH IT WAS IN DRIVE INSTEAD OF REVERSE). THEN IT PROGRESSED TO I WENT TO CHANGE FROM PARK TO DRIVE AND THE ENGINE JUST REVED WHEN THE GAS WAS PRESSED (ACTING AS THOUGH IT WAS IN NEUTRAL) AND I YET AGAIN HAD TO PUT IT BACK INTO PARK AND TURN IT OFF TO GET IT TO GO INTO THE RIGHT GEAR. THEN IT PROGRESSED TO MY BATTERY NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND MY CAR NOT WANTING TO START UP RIGHT AWAY. AND IT GOT EVEN WORSE TO THE POINT MY CAR NOW SAYS I NEED SERVICE ON THE SHIFTER. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR FOR 9 MONTHS AND I DRIVE IT 10 MILES A DAY (TO AND FROM WORK COMBINED) 5 DAYS A WEEK AND HARDLY EVER ANYMORE THAN THAT. I HAD NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT BEFORE THIS WEEK AND NOW ALL THESE PROBLEMS ARE POPPING UP AT ONCE.

  9. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Jul 9, 2019

MY JEEP WILL JUMP FORWARD UNCONTROLLABLY WHILE MOVING BETWEEN 9-13 MPH. WHEN IT HAPPENS, IT SOUNDS LIKE A BOMB GOING OFF IN THE TRANSMISSION SLAMMING GEARS DOWN. THIS HAPPENS REGULARLY AND CAN NOT BE CONTROLLED. OFTEN TIMES THIS WILL HAPPEN WITH THE SHIFT LIGHTS ARE ALL RED AND YOU CAN NOT TELL WHAT GEAR YOU ARE IN. I'VE HAD THIS SHIFT MODULE REPLACED MULTIPLE TIMES AND ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE DEALER WILL JUMP AGAIN.

  10. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Engine, Jul 7, 2019

ONLY HAS UNDER 54000 MILES ON IT I AM EXPERIENCING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS ESPECIALLY IN REVERSE IT'S EXTREMELY LOUD AND RUMBLES CONSTANT WHILE IN REVERSE . ALSO WHILE IN DRIVE ONCE MOVEING IT BUCKS BUT EVENTUALLY STARTS TO GO AWAY AFTER A LIL WHILE. BUT I ALSO LOOSE POWER I'LL HAVE TO PUT THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR THE ACCELERATOR AND I MOVE EXTREMELY SLOWLY THEN IT WILL EVENTUALLY KICK IN AND HAVE A VERY HARD TIME GOING UP LARGE HILLS ALL HILLS REALLY AND IT STRUGGLES TO GET UP IT LIKE HAS A LOT OF LACK OF POWER I'VE PUT MY JEEP IN THE SHOP NUMEROUS TIMES AND HAVE HAD MAJOR WORK DONE TO IT. ONE OF THEM THAT WAS COSTLY WAS THE CAR WOULD NOT READ THAT IT WAS IN PARK SO I COULDN'T SHUT THE CAR OFF I LOVE THE JEEP PRODUCT BUT I HATE THIS ONE IT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. THANKS

MY HORN WILL NOT WORK AT ALL NOR THE CRUISE CONTROL IS NOT WORKING AT ALL AS WELL. SO IS ALL OF THE CONTROLS ON THE STEERING WHEEL. ALSO A LOW HEADLIGHT WENT OUT AND I MAY HAVE A STUCK CLUTCH PROBLEM AS WELL. I NEED ALL OF THIS FOR MY SAFETY, MY PASSENGERS, AND MY VEHICLE SAFELY AS WELL. I AM REQUESTING A RECALL SO THESE MATTERS CAN BE STRAIGHTEN OUT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN THE NEXT DAY, BUT I NEED THESE SITUATIONS FIXED AS MUCH AS I CAN.

PURCHASED USED NOVEMBER OF 2017. HAS A LITTLE OVER 55,000 MILES ON IT. HAVE NOTICED THAT THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO TAKE LONGER THAN IT SHOULD TO SHIFT AND SOMETIMES DOESN'T SHIFT UP AT ALL OR WILL SHIFT DOWN OR EVEN TO NEUTRAL SOMETIMES WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHER SPEEDS. ALSO WILL LOSE POWER AND THEN SOMETIMES USE A LOT OF POWER WHEN NOT NEEDED, CAUSING THE CAR TO JERK OR ACCELERATE OUT OF NOWHERE. HAPPENS VERY OFTEN AND HAS BEEN CONTINUALLY GETTING WORSE SINCE I'VE PURCHASED IT. BUT SEVERELY NOTICED IT ON MY LAST ROAD TRIP ABOUT 6 WEEKS AGO.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND MY CHECK ENGINE, TRANSMISSION AND PARK LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING. MY CAR WOULDN'T ACCELERATE AND MY COMPUTER SAID 'SERVICE TRANSMISSION'. NOW MY CAR WON'T SHIFT GEARS OR ACCELERATE. IT HAS 40K MILES ON IT.

  20. Electrical system, Vehicle speed control, Service brakes, Dec 15, 2018

WHILE DRIVING ON A 4 LANE HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH THE VEHICLE PARTIALLY LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, UP SHIFT, OR OWNSHIFT, THE BRAKE LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING, ALONG WITH MANY OTHER LIGHTS ON THE DASH INCLUDING CHECK ENGINE. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND SHUT OFF THE JEEP. I WAITED A MINUTE THEN STARTED IT BACK UP. THE SERVICE PARKING BRAKE MESSAGE WAS ON THE MESSAGE CENTER, THE ODOMETER IS BLINKING, AND 4WD IS TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE. I HAD IT LOOKED AT BY A MECHANIC AND THEY SHOWED ME THE PARK BRAKE MODULE HAD WATER INTRUSION AND WAS VERY MUCH CORRODED.

AFTER TRANSMISSION RECALL REPAIR, ENGINE REPLACED DUE TRANSMISSION RECALL REPAIR 3RD TIME, VEHICLE IDLES ROUGH WHEN IN NEUTRAL, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND JEEP DIED. THE VEHICLE STARTED AFTER A MOMENT AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. STILL HAVING SAME ISSUES AFTER TRANSMISSION REPAIRED AND A NEW ENGINE DUE TO THE DEALERSHIP RESETTING THE COMPUTER INSTEAD OF REPAIRING THE TRANSMISSION. SO NEW ENGINE AND REPAIRED TRANSMISSION, STILL HAVING ISSUES. CONSTANT ISSUE WITH THE JEEP IDLING ROUGHLY, SOMETIMES NOT STARTING OR STALLING IN TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY AND CITY STREETS.

  22. Suspension, Electrical system, Vehicle speed control, Nov 12, 2018

THE CAR STALLS WHEN PRESSING ON THE GAS THEN JOLTS INTO GEAR MAKING IT FEEL AND SOUND LIKE I'VE BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND, IT IS SLOW TO ACCELERATE AT TIMES AND OTHER TIMES IT ACCELERATES EXTREMELY FASTER WHEN I LIGHTLY PUSH THE GAS, IT WILL ALSO DECELERATE AT TIMES WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE, THE ELECTRICAL WILL FLASH ALL THE SIGNALS AND TELL ME TO SERVICE THE TRANSMISSION AFTER I FILL MY TANK MOSTLY AND THE CAR WILL SHUT OFF WHEN I STOP AT A LIGHT AND JERK UNTIL INPUT IT IN PARK AND TURN IT OFF WHILE SITTING IN TRAFFIC. THE CONTROLS TO THE LIFT GATE DO NOT ALWAYS WORK WHEN PRESSED INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY ON WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE DIAGNOSTIC SAID IT WAS A SENSOR AND VALVE BUT THE DEALER KEPT THE CAR FOR A WEEK AND ONLY CHANGED THE OIL WHICH WAS NOT NEEDED AND SHUT THE LIGHT OFF ONLY FOR IT TO COME BACK ON ONE DAY AFTER I HAD TO DEMAND THEY FIX MY CAR OR GIVE IT BACK BECAUSE THEY WERE JUST HOLDING IT ON THE LOT, THE SUSPENSION AND SHOCKS ARE OFF THEY KEEP WEARING MY TIRES AND THE BUTTON FOR THE SHIFT GEAR FELL OFF WHILE I WAS ATTEMPTING TO PUT THE CAR IN GEAR WHICH IS AN OBVIOUS DEFECT

HI I HAVE BROUGHT MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES AND CONTINUES TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUES. WHEN I DRIVE (20-25 MPH), THE CAR JOLTS AS IF SOMEONE HAS HIT ME FROM BEHIND ALMOST AS IF THE CAR IS SHIFTING OR DOWNSHIFTING GEARS. WHEN IM APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT AND GRADUALLY SLOWING DOWN WITHOUT MY FOOT ON EITHER THE GAS OR BRAKE, THE CAR JOLTS BACK AND FORTH. THIS ALSO OCCURS WHEN IM DRIVING UPHILL AND DOWNHILL AROUND 20 MPH. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR AS THIS IS A RISK THAT I WILL CRASH DUE TO THE SHIFTING. I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR IN SEVERAL TIMES, THEY HAVE TOLD ME THEY DID A SOFTWARE UPDATE IN WHICH DID NOT WORK, I EXPERIENCE EVERYDAY WHEN I AM DRIVING AND CONTINUE TO BE WORSE EVERYDAY.

I EXPERIENCE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHEN COASTING. WHEN THE CAR ATTEMPTS TO DOWN SHIFT, THERE IS A SUDDEN INCREASE IN THE ENGINE RPMS AND A SUDDEN AND UNINTENDED INCREASE IN SPEED. I HAVE GOTTEN NO SATISFACTION FROM THE DEALER OR CHRYSLER. THEY CLAIM THAT IT IS THE WAY IT WAS DESIGNED TO OPERATE. NOTE: WHEN THIS OCCURS MY FOOT IS ON NEITHER THE GAS OR BRAKE PEDALS. THIS OCCURS MOSTLY ON LEVEL STREET AND HIGHWAYS.
