Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  4. EquipmentDec 21, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S55.

AIR CONDITIONING SUCTION/DISCHARGE HOSE SPLIT AND BLEW OFF THE ENGINE CAUSING LOSS OF AIR CONDITIONING COOLING WHILE IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY. RECALL #R57 CLEARLY SHOWS A RECALL FOR THIS HOSE BEING PLACED TOO CLOSE TO THE MANIFOLD AND POSING A FIRE RISK OR AIR CONDITIONING LOSS OR WARNING LIGHT. CHRYSLER STATES THIS VIN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ALTHOUGH IT STATES 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE VEHICLES ARE AFFECTED AND THIS MODEL IS IN FACT A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE. WE WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A REIMBURSEMENT FOR THIS REPAIR. ALTHOUGH WE FEEL OUR PREVIOUS REPAIR IN MAY OF 2018 WAS ALSO RELATED TO THIS SAME RECALL WE WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED.

  2. Engine, May 7, 2019

THE ENGINE LOSES LARGE AMOUNT OF OIL CAUSING THE CAR AIR FLOW SYSTEM TO MALFUNCTION. THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUTDOWN WHILE DRIVING BECAUSE THE CAR NEEDS OIL AND ECS WARNING BLINKS. HOWEVER, THE CAR OIL INDICATOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE THE CAR NEEDS OIL. THIS SAME IDENTICAL SITUATION HAS HAPPEN MULTIPLE TIME, STARTING ABOUT 1 YEAR AFTER I PURCHASED THE SUV IN SEPTEMBER 2015. EVERY TIME I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, IT HAS BEEN NOTED IN THE RECORD. HOWEVER, THIS TIME, THE AUTOMOBILE TECH INFORM ME OF THE PROBLEM WITH CAR AND NOTED THAT JEEP IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE WITH THE 2.4L 4 CYLINDER ENGINES. THOSE PARTICULAR ENGINES ARE ALSO IN THE CHRYSLER 200.

  5. Power train, Engine, Mar 29, 2019

DRIVING ALONG WITH VEHICLE IN MOTION, THE ENGINE STALLS OUT AND CONTINUES TO ROLL, BUT DOES NOT OPERATE. CAR MUST COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, REST AND THEN TRY TO RESTART - VERY DANGEROUS ON THE HIGHWAY. A MESSAGE COMES ON STATING "VEHICLE MUST BE IN GEAR TO SHIFT" OR SOMETHING CLOSE TO THAT - BUT THERE HAS BEEN NO SHIFTING ON MY PART AT ALL. THIS STALLING HAS PUT ME IN VERY DANGEROUS CONDITIONS BECAUSE CARS COMING FROM BEHIND AND AROUND ME HAVE NO WARNING OF THE STALLED OUT ENGINE EITHER. IT TAKES ABOUT 3 OR 4 MINUTES TO RESTART THE ENGINE. DEALERSHIP SAYS THIS IS AN OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE AND ITS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE PISTONS. ANOTHER JEEP SERVICE MANAGER SAID THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ITS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I FEAR THAT WE'RE GOING TO GET HIT (MY DAUGHTER AND I) AND MEANWHILE, WE DO NOT HAVE OTHER TRANSPORTATION AND I'M GOING TO BE PAYING ON THIS FOR 4 MORE YEARS. THERE IS A LOT OF INFORMATION ON OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET. FOR NOW, THE DEALERSHIP IS DOING AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WHICH IS RELATED TO THE ENGINE PROBLEMS KNOWN ON OTHER VEHICLES. WITH THIS MANY PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, THIS SHOULD BE A RECALLED ENGINE.

  6. Electrical system, Engine, Mar 22, 2019

SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, A JEEP CHEROKEE LATITUDE IS HAS SHOWN THESE ERRORS CONSISTENTLY. EXAMPLES: THE VEHICLE DECELERATES WHEN PUSHED TO ACCELERATE QUICKLY, ESPECIALLY WHEN TURNING. IT SHIFTS HARD BETWEEN GEARS WHEN DRIVING, CAUSING A JERKING MOTION WITHIN THE CAR - EVEN WHEN GENTLY ACCELERATING. ON ONE OCCASION IT HAS SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO COMPLETELY STOP FUNCTIONING. MORE RECENTLY, I WAS REAR-ENDED AT A GAS STATION AND WAS UNAWARE, BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS MY CAR JERKING FORWARD UPON ACCELERATION. WHEN REVERSING, THE VEHICLE JERKS BACKWARDS - AFTER A DELAY. THE VEHICLE ALSO DELAYS WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TURN THE VEHICLE ON.

  7. Engine, Feb 19, 2019

BURN OF OIL AT ROUGHLY A QT PER 1000 MILES, LESS THAN RECOMMENDED OIL CHANGE MILEAGE. EFFECTS ENGINE. SHUTS ENGINE OFF WHILE DRIVING AND TAKES 3-5 MINUTES BEFORE CAR CAN START AGAIN. VERY DANGEROUS AS IT HAPPENS AT ANY SPEEDS AND CAR COMPLETELY LOCKS UP.

  8. Electrical system, Engine, Feb 9, 2019

WHEN AT A COMPLETE STOP AND THE "AUTO START/STOP" IS ENGAGED (WHEN THE ENGINE CUTS POWER TO SAVE ON GAS CONSUMPTION), AND YOU LET YOUR FOOT OFF THE BRAKE TO ACCELERATE, THE VEHICLE DASH CHIMES AND FLASHES QUICKLY ON THE DASH "BLIND SPOT ALERT TEMPORARY UNAVAILABLE."

  9. Engine, Feb 9, 2019

WHEN GOING FROM A COMPLETE STOP TO ACCELERATING, THE VEHICLE IS NON-RESPONSIVE TO OR DELAYED RESPONSE TO THE DEPRESSION OF THE GAS PEDAL. THIS IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS WHEN TURNING IN INTERSECTIONS AND STOP SIGNS. THIS IS IN ON GOING ISSUE AND HAS HAPPENED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS.

  10. Power train, Engine, Feb 5, 2019

I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN 12/31/2017 AS USED FROM WALLY ARMOUR IN SALEM OHIO, IT ONLY HAD 11000 MILES ON IT AND SMELLED BRAND NEW STILL. THE FIRST INCIDENT I HAD NOTICED WHEN I WAS DRIVING THE RPMS/ENGINE WOULD REV REALLY HIGH AND LOUD BUT THE CAR WAS ONLY GOING 55 AND IT SEEMED TO BE IN THE WRONG GEAR BUT I WAS IN THE AUTOMATIC DRIVE POSITION WHICH SHOULD NOT CAUSE THIS, I COULD UNDERSTAND IF I WAS IN STANDARD STICK SHIFT AND IF I WOULD DOWN SHIFT IT WOULD CAUSE IT TO DO THAT. THEN I STARTED NOTICING A HESITATION IN THE TAKE OFF OF THE VEHICLE SO WHEN I WAS AT A STOP LIGHT AND TURNING LEFT IT WAITING FOR ONCOMING TRAFFIC IT WILL HESITATE AND GOD FOR BID THERE IS A CAR COMING AND IT IS HESITATING AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT WILL LURCH FORWARD AND I GET THROWN FORWARD THEN BACKWARD IN MY SEAT AS IF I WAS HIT FROM BEHIND BY ANOTHER VEHICLE BUT THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND MY VEHICLE AND IT WILL JAR MY NECK CAUSING PAIN, I HAD NECK SURGERY IN 2016 WITH A CAGE PUT IN AND A FUSION OF 2 CADAVER BONES, I AM IN NO CONDITION FOR MY VEHICLE TO BE LURCHING FORWARD AS IF IT IS GETTING HIT FROM BEHIND. THIS IS NOT A ONE TIME INCIDENT EITHER IT IS ON GOING DAILY. I AM HOPING FOR A RESOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM I HAVE TAKEN IT IN ONCE AND PLAN ON TAKING IT IN AGAIN TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT POSSIBLY DOING SOMETHING TO IT TO FIX IT.

  11. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Engine, Feb 1, 2019

WHEN STARTING FROM A STOP CAR HESITATES OR JERKS, SOMETIMES CLUNKS OR GRINDS. DOES THE SAME THING WHEN TRYING TO PASS A VEHICLE, PULLING OUT AT A STOP LIGHT DOES THE SAME THING. I BELIEVE IT COULD BE THE TRANSMISSION AS THE CAR SEEMS NOT TO WANT TO SHIFT CORRECTLY AND MAKES ROUGH, JUMPY GRINDING NOISES DOES THIS MOST OF TIME TIME YOU DRIVE IT AND HAS FOR ALONG TIME.

  12. Engine, Jan 4, 2019

WHILE DRIVING, I'VE HAD TWO PROBLEMS. ONE WHERE WHEN MY TRANSMISSION SHIFTS FROM 4TH TO 5TH THE WHOLE VEHICLE HITS REALLY HARD. IT'S A VERY SUDDEN AND HARD JERK. THE SECOND PROBLEM IS, TODAY, WE WERE DRIVING AND AT THE BEGINNING OF ACCELERATION, THE JEEP SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL BY ITSELF.

  13. Power train, Structure, Engine, Jan 3, 2019

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON RELATED TO THERMOSTAT LIFTGATE HAS BEEN LEAKING SINCE THE BEGINNING TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING OR DRAGGING CONSTANTLY

  14. Electronic stability control (ESC), Engine, Jan 3, 2019

THE VEHICLE'S LOW OIL LIGHT INDICATOR ONLY FLASHES ACROSS THE SCREEN AND DOES NOT REMAIN ON. THIS ONLY TAKES PLACE WHEN THE CAR IS COMPLETELY OUT OF OIL AND THE CAR LOSES POWER AND SHUTS OFF WHILE IN MOTION. THE VEHICLE HAS NO LEAKS BUT REQUIRES OIL EVERY 700 MILES OR SO. THE ENGINE RUNS OFF SYNTHETIC OIL WHICH SHOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED LESS FREQUENTLY, BUT THIS VEHICLE NEEDS OIL REPLACEMENT EVERY 2-3 MONTHS.

  15. Engine, Dec 29, 2018

WHEN REACHING THE TOP OF A HILL, AND YOU LET OFF THE GAS, THE CAR SLAMS INTO GEAR EXTREMELY HARD BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION CAN'T ADJUST.

  16. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Dec 7, 2018

WHEN I SWITCH GEAR THE CAR JERKS VERY HARD WHEN PUTTING IT IN REVERSE. IT BURNS GAS VERY FAST ALSO THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARS OFTEN I HAVE GOT IT CHECK NUMEROUS OF TIMES THEY TELL ME MY THERMOSTAT MAY NEED REPLACED. BUT THE NEXT DAY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL GO OFF. THE TRUCK DOESN'T OVER HEAT, IT JUST READS THE THERMOSTAT MAY NEED REPLACED THIS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE THE SECOND MONTH I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE.

  17. Power train, Electrical system, Engine, Dec 3, 2018

SEPT. 2015 I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS AT 6 MONTHS SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP 9 TIMES SOMETIMES IT HAS TO BE TOWED IN IS NOT DRIVEABLE SAME PROBLEM BUT EVERY TIME I GET IT BACK THE PROBLEMS ARE WORSE SINCE ABOUT THE 18TH OF AUG THIS YEAR I HAVE HAD THE CAR ONLY 9 DAYS THIS IS NOW DEC 3RD IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP SOMETIMES 3 OR 4 DAYS SOME TIMES AS LONG 3 OR 4 WEEKS THE TRANSMISSION CLUNKS LIKE IT IS FALLING OUT ALL THE LIGHTS GO OUT WILL NOT SHIFT IT ALSO SHUTS DOWN WHEN DRIVING IT ONE TIME IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION THIS IS GETTING REALLY DANGEROUS FOR ME AS WELL AS ANYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD WITH ME I HAVE BEEN IN TOUCH WITH CHRYSLER CUSTOMER CARE LADY NAMED LORI SHE SAYS I AM OUT OF THE PERIMETER FOR BUY BACK THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS CAR I AM MAKING CAR PAYMENTS AND INSURANCE ON A CAR I CAN'T DRIVE AND DON'T EVEN AVE MOST OF THE TIME. THE DEALERSHIP CALLED ME A WEEK AGO TO COME PICK THE CAR AND WHEN I GOT THERE IT WOULDN'T EVEN RUN TO GET TO THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING TO ME. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 2 1/2 YEARS NOW ONLY GETTING WORSE ALL OF THE TIME I AM NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR KNOWING IT CAN SHUT DOWN ANYTIME IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC AND CHRYSLER WON'T DO ANYTHING EXCEPT KEEP PUTTING IT BACK IN THE SHOP AND AFTER 3 WEEKS OR I GO TO PICK IT UP AND ONCE AGAIN IT WON'T RUN. *DT*JB

I PURCHASED A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE LATITUDE SEPTEMBER 2018 WITH 64,000 MILES ON IT. WHEN DRIVING VEHICLE ON THE STREET, THE VEHICLE WILL JERK REALLY HARD LIKE IT IS CHANGING GEARS. IF I AM PUTTING VEHICLE IN REVERSE AND LEAVING OUT OF MY DRIVE WAY, THE VEHICLE JERKS. WHENEVER I AM DRIVING AT A LOW SPEED (0-45MPH) THE VEHICLE JERKS. WHEN COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, LIKE A STOP SIGN, RED LIGHT, OR HEAVY TRAFFIC, VEHICLE JERKS ONCE I ACCELERATE. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO DEALER TO BE SERVICED ON NOVEMBER 3, 2018 REGARDING THIS ISSUE AND I WAS TOLD THEY FOUND NO PROBLEMS BUT THERE WAS AN UPDATE (RRT) COMPLETED ON VEHICLE. I TOOK MY VEHICLE BACK TO DEALERSHIP ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2018 FOR ELECTRICAL COMPONENT SERVICES AND COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE AND WAS TOLD VEHICLE IS NOT SHOWING ANY PROBLEMS BUT MY THERMOSTAT NEEDED REPLACING DUE TO THERMOSTAT RATIONALITY CODE. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR A FUTURE DATE TO THE SERVICE. ALSO HAD LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT FIXED WAS TOLD THE BULB DIDN'T NEED REPLACING THAT SOMEHOW IT CAME UNSCREWED.
