Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  4. EquipmentDec 21, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. 6. Power train, automatic transmissionJul 12, 2016

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee and 2015 Chrysler 200, Jeep Renegade, RAM ProMaster, and 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles equipped with 9-speed automatic transmissions. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S55.

  1. Power train, Jul 9, 2019

WHEN SLOWING TO ALMOST A STOP BUT NOT FULLY STOPPING, VEHICLE DOES NOT SELECT A GEAR IMMEDIATELY WHEN THE ACCELERATOR IS PRESSED. THE VEHICLE WILL NOT ENGAGE A GEAR FOR SEVERAL SECONDS WHIC RESULTS IN BEING UNABLE TO ACCELERATE ALL. WHEN THE VEHICLE DOES ENGAGE A GEAR, THERE IS A SUDDEN JOLT IF THE ACCELERATOR IS STILL PRESSED. IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE WHEN THE GEAR IS NOT ENGAGED YOU CANNOT ACCELERATE THE CAR AT ALL UNTIL IT FINALLY ENGAGES.

  2. Power train, Engine, Jul 5, 2019

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE. WHEN THE CONTACT PARKED THE VEHICLE, IT FAILED TO RESTART. WHEN THE CONTACT MADE ANOTHER ATTEMPT, THE VEHICLE RESTARTED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN ANY GEAR, IT JERKED AND MADE A LOUD NOISE. ALSO, THE TRANSMISSION INDICATOR BLINKED ON AND OFF. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THE RPMS INCREASED VERY HIGH WITHOUT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BEING PRESSED. JIM BROWNE CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM OF DADE CITY (12020 US-301, DADE CITY, FL 33525, (352) 353-0704) ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE BE BROUGHT IN FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER AGREED WITH THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.

  3. Other or unspecified, Engine, Jul 5, 2019

ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY REPLACED, ALSO THE AC COMPRESSOR BROKE RIGHT AFTER THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED. THERE HAS BEEN RECALLS ON 75K OTHER JEEP CHEROKEES, SAME YEAR.

  4. Structure, Jul 3, 2019

LIFTGATE OPERATES INTERMITTENTLY. IT WILL GET TO THE POINT IF IT OPENS THEN IT WILL NOT CLOSE AND LATCH. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY IN PARK DIDN'T MATTER IF THE ENGINE WAS ON OR OFF.

  5. Other or unspecified, Jun 30, 2019

FOR THE THIRD TIME I HAVE HAD THE SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT COME ON THE CAR ONLY HAS 36,000 MILES. THERE IS ALSO SIGNIFICANT ISSUES WITH THE DRIVE TRAIN, SHIFTING , MAKING A FAN HUMMING SOUND AND THE CAR NOT ACCELERATING AND HITTING TOP RMPS IN THE RED. MY CAR PREVIOUSLY WAS AT A JEEP DEALERSHIP AND THEY CLAIM NOTHING IS WRONG, COMPUTER RESET AND ISSUES ARE STILL OCCURRING

  6. Power train, Jun 30, 2019

WHEN TEMPERATURES REACH BELOW FREEZING OR ABOVE 80 DEGREES, MY CAR WILL SEND AN ERROR MESSAGE WHEN I PLACE THE CAR IN REVERSE. THE ERROR MESSAGE READS, 'SERVICE SHIFTER'. WHEN THE CAR IS THEN PLACED IN PARK AND TURNED OFF AND BACK ON, THE ERROR MESSAGE WILL LEAVE THE SCREEN. ALSO, THREE MONTHS AGO, MY CAR WOULD STALL WHILE DRIVING. AFTER LOOKING INTO THE ISSUE I FOUND THAT THE OIL HAD BEEN COMPLETELY DRAINED AFTER AN OIL CHANGE WAS ISSUED IN THE PREVIOUS MONTH. THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF LEAKS. AFTER FILLING THE CAR BACK UP WITH OIL THE ISSUE DID NOT OCCUR AGAIN. THIS MAY BE RELATED TO THE FIRST ISSUE.

  7. Power train, Jun 29, 2019

SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT CONTINUES TO COME ON FOR THE TRANSMISSION. CAN ONLY BE RESET BY TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN BACK ON. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, FOUR WHEEL DRIVE DOES NOT WORK, THE VEHICLE SHIFTS IMPROPERLY AND LUNGES AT LOWER SPEEDS AND THE GAUGE CLUSTER ON THE DASH WILL ONLY SHOW 'SERVICE SHIFTER' TENDERING IT USELESS. THE LIGHT COMES ON WHILE DRIVING OR STOPPED AND AT VARIOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR MONTHS AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED POWER TRAIN WARRANTY.

  8. Power train, Jun 26, 2019

ONCE THE VEHICLE IS ON THE ROAD, WHEN CALLING FOR ADDITIONAL POWER, THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT RESPOND. TRANSMISSION STAYS IN CURRENT GEAR AND WILL NOT ALLOW VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE. SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHT AND ENGINE LIGHT BOTH COME ON EACH TIME THIS HAPPENS. IT SEEMS EVERY TIME THIS CONDITION OCCURS, IT'S APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE WHETHER IT BE ON THE HIGHWAY OR CITY DRIVING.

CAR STALLING AT LOW SPEED AND ALSO AT STOP. TAKES SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO GET MOVING AGAIN. WENT IN FOR SERVICE AND CAR VIRTUALLY OUT OF OIL. WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO NEEDING AN OIL CHANGE. LESS THAN EVERY 1000 MILES THERE IS AN OIL LOSS OF ATLEAST A QUART NEEDING TO BE ADDED AT OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AND ANY TYPE OF RESOLUTION FEELS WORLDS AWAY WHEN OUR SAFETY IS JEOPARDIZED.

  14. Other or unspecified, Jun 18, 2019

AIR CONDITIONER STOPPED WORKING. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, MECHANIC INFORMED ME THE PROBLEM ORIGINATED FROM A FAULTY EVAPORATOR SYSTEM. CURRENTLY, THE REPAIR ESTIMATES IS OVER $2000 DUE TO REPLACE THE EVAPORATOR, COMPRESSOR AND FREON. BASED ON JEEP BLOGS, IT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED THAT JEEP HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS FAULTY EVAPORATOR PROBLEM, BUT WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. PER JEEP BLOG, ANOTHER GRAND CHEROKEE OWNER WROTE: DEALER'S SERVICE WRITER IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME THAT 85% OF THE TIME WHEN THE A/C GOES OUT IN THIS VEHICLE IT'S THE EVAPORATOR INSIDE THE CAR BEHIND THE DASH. UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION BY THE REPAIR TECHNICIAN THAT'S WHAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I ASKED IF THEY REPLACE THE EVAPORATOR WITH THE SAME PART AND HE SAID NO, THEY NOW USE A DIFFERENT SKU REPLACEMENT EVAPORATOR. OBVIOUSLY, JEEP IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND HAS MADE CHANGES TO FIX IT.

  15. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Jun 18, 2019

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS AT A STOP SIGN WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED, IT ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AUSTIN CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM (2905 W OAKLAND AVE, AUSTIN, MN 55912, (507) 433-8877) FOR A SECOND DIAGNOSIS, BUT NO FAILURE WAS FOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 58760311. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,457.

  16. Power train, Jun 18, 2019

THE TRANSMISSION WAS STUCK IN NEUTRAL AND REQUIRED A TOW TO A DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. EVEN THOUGH IT IS UNDER WARRANTY, JEEP DENIED THE WARRANTY CLAIM, AND COULDN'T TELL ME WHY IT HAPPENED.

"SERVICE SHIFTER"WARNING INTERMITTENTLY STAYING ON. RESETS SOMETIMES BY RESTARTING CAR.. WAS SERVICED FOR THIS TWICE BY DEALER UNDER WARRANTY. NOT SURE WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IF IT COMPLETELY FAILS WHILE DRIVING. HAPPENS MOVING OR STATIONARY.

  19. Power train, Jun 7, 2019

MY JEEP SHIFTER SERVICE LIGHT HAS COME ON AT APPROX 46650 MILES. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC (ACTIVE MILITARY OVERSEAS) AND HE SAID I'M ONE OF SEVERAL JEEPS HE HAS SEEN THIS WEEK WHO HAVE COME IN WITH THE SAME CONCERN. RIGHT NOW MY CAR STILL OPERATES NORMAL WITH THE EXCEPTION. OF THE SERVICE SHIFTER MESSAGE NOT GOING AWAY BUT IT'S ODD THAT SO MANY VEHICLES IN THIS AREA WOULD HAVE A SIMILAR PROBLEM AT THE SAME TIME.

  20. Power train, Electronic stability control (ESC), Service brakes, Jun 5, 2019

WAS PARKED AT THE STORE GOT IN AND STARTED IT. IT HICCUPED ON STARTING. SHIFTED TO REVERSE AND A HUGE CLUNK HAPPENED. I REVERED AND SHIFTED TO DRIVE AGAIN A HUGE CLUNK. ONCE DRIVING IT HAD NO POWER AND SERVICE TRANSMISSION AND PARKING BRAKE CAME ON.

  21. Power train, May 31, 2019

THE 9-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS FOR ALMOST A YEAR. THE TRANSMISSION LURCHES, HESITATES ON ACCELERATION, SHIFTS INTO NEUTRAL, AND MAKES CLUCKING SOUNDS WHEN SHIFTED INTO DRIVE. MY DEALER (SHERIDAN MOTORS) TRIED TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM WITH A SOFTWARE UPDATE IN JANUARY, 2019 (SEE ATTACHED INVOICE), BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. RECENTLY, WHILE DRIVING ON I-25 NORTH OF DENVER, CO, THE TRANSMISSION HESITATED FOR SEVERAL SECONDS ON ACCELERATION AND DROPPED SPEED FROM 75 MPH TO 61 MPH. THIS ALMOST CAUSED US TO BE REAR-ENDED BY FOLLOWING TRAFFIC. I NO LONGER CONSIDER IT SAFE TO DRIVE MY 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE. I HAVE READ MANY STORIES OF JEEP OWNERS HAVING THE SAME CONTINUOUS ISSUES WITH THESE 9-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, AND I THINK ALL VEHICLES WITH THESE TRANSMISSIONS NEED TO BE IMMEDIATELY RECALLED.

THIS IS THE THIRD TIME SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IT HAD TO BE TOWED FOR SHUTTING DOWN IN MOTION. I BOUGHT THE CAR BRAND NEW IN MAY OF 2015. HAS 51K MILES ON IT NOW. ALSO IT SHIFTS IRATICLY. THE CRUISE CONTROL ACCELERATES ON IT'S OWN. SOMETHING MUST BE DID ONE OR PEOPLE WILL GET HURT .

ON 5/23/19 AND 5/27/19 VEHICLE LOSES POWER WHILE DRIVING, ENGINE SHUTS DOWN, STEERING LOCKS AND THE DASH LIGHTS UP WITH A MESSAGE THAT SAYS PUT VEHICLE AND "PARK" AND THEN SELECT DESIRED GEAR. I HAVE SMALL CHILDREN. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE LAST MONTH.I KEEP MY VEHICLE UP TO DATE ON MAINTENANCE/SERVICE. I READ OVER 100 PEOPLE'S EXACT SAME COMPLAINTS ON LINE. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE THAT I AM PAYING A CAR PAYMENT, HAVE LESS THAN 45,000 MILES ON MY VEHICLE, AND HAVING THESE KIND OF SAFETY CONCERNS. TODAY, MY CAR DIED WITH NO WARNING ON A BUSY ROAD, GIVES ME APPROXIMATELY 10 SECONDS TO PULL TO SAFETY BEFORE THERE IS NO SPEED/ABILITY TO MANUEVER THE VEHICLE. IT IS RIDICULOUS THAT THE RISK IS SO HIGH, AND THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS LISTED ON LINE SHOW A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THIS AMONG HUNDREDS OF VEHICLES BY JEEP AND NOTHING. THE DEALERSHIPS/SERVICE CONTINUE TO MAKE COMMENTS LIKE "WE WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE". TO BE SPECIFIC: DRIVING AT ABOUT 25 MILES PER HOUR, STRAIGHT FOLLOWING A RIGHT OR LEFT TURN. . . . LOST POWER. LIGHTS WENT ON THE DASH, MESSAGE ABOVE APPEARED. IT TOOK TWO TRIES TO RESTART TO GET ME OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I HAD MY CRANK SHAFT SENSOR REPLACED ON 5/8/19 DUE TO CAR STALLING. NOW MY VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUTS OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. PLEASE FIX IT BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY INJURED.
