Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  4. EquipmentDec 21, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles manufactured July 29, 2013, to February 5, 2016. The seat fasteners on the first or second row seats may not have been tightened to the proper torque specification.

Loose fasteners may allow the seats to move, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupants in the event of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seats or seat sets, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during September 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall S63.

  6. Power train, automatic transmissionJul 12, 2016

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee and 2015 Chrysler 200, Jeep Renegade, RAM ProMaster, and 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles equipped with 9-speed automatic transmissions. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S55.

The affected vehicles are equipped with radios that have software vulnerabilities that can allow third-party access to certain networked vehicle control systems.

Exploitation of the software vulnerability may result in unauthorized remote modification and control of certain vehicle systems, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify and mail affected owners a USB drive that includes a software update that eliminates the vulnerability, free of charge. Optionally, owners may download the update to their own USB drive from http://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/ or take their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for immediate installation. In an effort to mitigate the effects of this security vulnerability, Chrysler has had the wireless service provider close the open cellular connection to the vehicle that provided unauthorized access to the vehicle network. This measure may not have been implemented on all vehicles and does not address access by other means that will be remedied by the software update. The recall began on August 25, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R40.

  2. Power train, Sep 15, 2016

THE TRANSMISSION ON THIS VEHICLE, CHEROKEE TRAILHAWK WITH 13K MILES IS VERY DANGEROUS. LIKE OTHERS, I HAVE BEEN TO MULTIPLE DEALERS NUMEROUS TIMES FOR TRANSMISSION SOFTWARE UPDATES WHICH SEEM TO FIX THE PROBLEM BUT THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE RELEARNED BY THE COMPUTER AND COMES BACK WORSE THAN BEFORE. NOW THERE IS A TRANSAXLE ISSUE WHERE ALL POWER CAN BE LOST WHILE DRIVING. THIS VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION IS BAD ENOUGH WITH THE CONSTANT LAG, JERKING AND HESITATION BUT NOW THIS UNREPAIRABLE TRANSAXLE ISSUE IS MAKING IT VERY HARD FOR ME TO EVEN WANT TO DRIVE THIS INCREDIBLY UNSAFE VEHICLE. DEALERS SAY 9 SPEED TRANSMISSION JUST WORK THIS WAY BUT THIS IS THE WORST SHIFTING, MOST DANGEROUS VEHICLE I HAVE EVER DRIVEN. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS JEEP PRODUCT AND WORRY ABOUT ANYONE DRIVING MY VEHICLE.

VEHICLE LOST ABILITY TO ACCELERATE EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVE. VEHICLE ONLY HAS 11,000 MILES ON IT. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT 50MPH WITH MY TRAILHAWK EDITION JEEP, THE ROOF RAIL BAR RIPPED OUT OF THE ROOF OF THE CAR SENDING MY KAYAK RACK AND 35 POUND KAYAK DOWN THE CENTER OF THE ROAD. CHRYSLER/JEEP STATES THEY ARE NOT LED TO BELIEVE THE INCIDENT WAS A MANUFACTURING RESPONSIBILITY. LIVES COULD HAVE BEEN LOST. THE JEEP DEALERSHIP TRIED TO TELL ME THEY FOUND DOCUMENTATION THAT THE RAILS ARE NOT TO BE USED UNLESS THEY HAVE A MANUFACTURED CROSSBAR WITH A MAXIMUM WEIGHT OF 150 POUNDS. MY KAYAK RACK HAS A CROSSBAR AND THE WEIGHT OF THE RACK WAS MAYBE 15 POUNDS AND THE KAYAK ITSELF WAS 35 POUNDS. THERE WAS NO WHERE IN MY OWNERS MANUAL THAT STATES I CANNOT USE MY ROOF RAILS. ONLY A SAFETY STATEMENT SAYING NOTHING SHOULD BE SCREWED INTO MY ROOF FOR AIRBAG AND SAFETY PURPOSES. EVEN WITH MANUFACTURED CROSSBARS THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SCREW INTO MY ROOF SO THEY WOULD NOT HAVE HELD MY ROOF RAIL INTO THE ROOF. THE ROOF IS VERY THIN AND THERE ARE CLEAR HOLES WHERE THE BAR COMPLETELY RIPPED OUT OF THE ROOF. IF THERE WAS A VEHICLE BEHIND ME PEOPLE COULD HAVE BEEN VERY HURT. CHRYSLER SENT AN INVESTIGATOR TO DO A REPORT ON THE VEHICLE THEY SENT ME A ONE PARAGRAPH LETTER STATING THEY DECLINE ANY ASSISTANCE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS INCIDENT. SAFETY CONCERNS FOR OTHER PEOPLE ON THE ROAD AND OTHER JEEP OWNERS WAS NOT ADDRESSED. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT I WAS ON A BACK ROAD GOING 50 MILES AN HOUR WITH NO WIND GUSTS OR ANY REASON FOR THIS TO OCCUR. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED ON AUGUST 7 AND EVEN THOUGH IT WAS REPORTED TO THE DEALERSHIP ON THE EIGHTH I HAVE RECEIVED NO HELP. I AM ATTACHING PHOTOS OF THE KAYAK SAFELY MOUNTED ON THE KAYAK RACK THE DAY BEFORE THE INCIDENT AND THE DAMAGES TO MY CAR.

I PREVIOUSLY FILED A COMPLAINT IN DECEMBER, 2015 REGARDING THE AUTOMATIC BRAKING SYSTEM APPLYING THE BRAKES FOR NO REASON. IN JANUARY, 2016, THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE BRAKING SYSTEM; HOWEVER, THE CAR HAS BRAKED AUTOMATICALLY ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS SINCE THEY WERE REPLACED. THIRD TIME APRIL 1ST, 2016 WHILE BACKING INTO MY DRIVEWAY, NO VEHICLES OR OBJECTS AROUND. TOOK INTO DEALERSHIP, DEALERSHIP STATED NO PROBLEM FOUND AND THAT WAS NORMAL BRAKING (THIS IS NOT NORMAL BRAKING). FOURTH TIME ON AUGUST 29TH, 2016, AGAIN, WHILE BACKING INTO DRIVEWAY WITH NO VEHICLE OR OBJECTS AROUND. TAKING THE VEHICLE BACK INTO THE DEALERSHIP ON 8/30/16, THIS IS THE 4TH VISIT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS ISSUE.

  17. Electrical system, Engine, Aug 29, 2016

I HAVE HAD ALL KINDS OF ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH MY 2015 CHEROKEE TRAILHAWK 4X4 AND THIS ALL HAPPENED AFTER THEY DID 4 UPGRADES ON MY COMPUTER AT DEALERSHIP, WHEN PICKED UP SUV THE CHECK ENGINE WAS ON, TOOK BACK TO DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY FLASHED IT WHAT EVER THAT MEANS. THE CHECK ENGINE DISAPPEARED AFTERWARDS, I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH IT LUNGING WHEN LETTING FOOT OFF BRAKE DUE TO THE AUTO ON & OFF FEATURE AND JUST RECENTLY WAS DRIVING AND THE AIR BAD LIGHT, TRACTION LIGHT, 4 WHEEL DRIVE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON I PULLED OVER DUE TO THIS AND WHEN PUTTING IN PARK FELT LIKE SOMEONE REAR ENDED ME IN WHICH THEY DIDNT, THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE LIGHT COMES ON WITH MESSAGE THAT FOUR WHEEL DRIVE HAS BEEN DISABLED CONTACT DEALER, THAT STARTED IT ALL THAT MORNING. THEN ALL THE OTHER LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AND BEEPING, I TOOK TO DEALER IN RICHMOND KY AND THEY BROUGHT OUT THE SCANNER AND SCANNED IT AND PRINTED OFF SEVERAL THINGS THAT WAS COMING UP THEN ADVISED ME THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING TO CHECK VEHICLE FOR 2 WEEKS I THEN CALLED LEXINGTON DEALER AND THEY SAID BRING IT IN, I HAD IT TOWED TO LEXINGTON DEALER, NOW THEY SAY THEY CANT GET IT TO DUPLICATE ANYTHING. WELL NOW THIS IS THE ISSUE I HAVE INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL ISSUES THAT DEEMS THIS VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE IT IS CAN SHUT DOWN AS OTHERS HAS SAID OR CATCH FIRE OR ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN ETC. THERE IS DEFINITELY ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE THAT NO ONE CAN EXPLAIN. I HAVE ASK DEALERSHIP TO CONTACT JEEP MFG/CHRYSLER TO SEE ABOUT WHAT THEY SAY ITS VERY SCARY HAVING A VEHICLE THAT YOU CANT TRUST TO BE SAFE IN. ITS ALREADY HAD ME REAR END A CAR BY THE LUNGING AFTER YOU LET OFF BRAKE NOW THIS... I JUST FEEL UNSAFE IN MY NEW VEHICLE.... I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE TO TO BE A SAFE ONE. AND ITS DEFINITELY NOT SAFE DUE TO BEING INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL ISSUES. DEALERS DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE ABOUT THE ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTIONS OF THESE CARS.

CURRENTLY MY 2015 CHEROKEE TRAIL HAWK IS AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH AN UNKNOWN POWERTRAIN ISSUE, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THURSDAY. THE TRANSMISSION IN NOT SO FEW WORDS FEELS VERY GUMMY WITH NOT A LOT OF POWER IN BETWEEN GEARS. WHEN COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AND THEN ACCELERATING THE TRANSMISSION WILL HESITATE AND NOT SHIFT OR HAVE ANY POWER! WHEN THERE IS ON COMING TRAFFIC IT IS VERY DANGEROUS AT TIMES. IT WILL LURCH FORWARD WHEN DOWNSHIFTNG AND COMING TO A STOP. THE TRANSMISSION WILL HAVE VERY HARD SHIFTS AT TIMES OR VERY SOFT SHIFTS. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS. *TR

2015 JEEP CHEROKEE WITH ACTIVE DRIVE II. WOBBLES WHEN FLAT TOWING UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. APPARENTLY THERE IS A FIX FOR THIS THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE COMPLIMENTRY AS IT IS A SAFETY PROBLEM. FAC HAS NOT INFORMED THEIR DEALERS OF THIS. THEY WANT COST OF PART AND 4 HRS LABOR TO REPAIR. THE VEHICLE I BOUGHT SAYS PLACE TRANSFER CASE IN NUETRAL AND TRAMSMISSION IN PARK AND TOW.THE VEHICLE I GOT REQUIRES AN ACCESSOREE KIT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. FCA SHOULD BE PAYING FOR THIS

  20. Power train, Aug 24, 2016

THE 9 SPEED TRANSMISSION IS UNRELIABLE AND DANGEROUS. THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT ENGAGE WHEN STARTING FROM A STOP. THE ENGINE REVS AND THEN SEVERAL SECONDS LATER THE TRANSMISSION ENGAGES AND LURCHES FORWARD. THE DELAY PUTS YOU AT RISK AS YOU ENTER TRAFFIC. ADDITIONALLY, THE TRANSMISSION WILL SUDDENLY SHIFT WHEN YOU ARE COASTING AND ACCELERATE 10-15 MILES PER HOUR FASTER. I HAVE HAD THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP 5 TIMES TO REPAIR THIS AND NOTHING CHANGES. FLASHING THE SOFTWARE DOES NOTHING. I HAVE FILED A LEMON LAW CLAIM WITH THE STATE OF CA AND HAVE AN ARBITRATION MEETING SCHEDULED IN SEPTEMBER.

  21. Power train, Aug 19, 2016

THE 9 SPEED ZF TRANSMISSION IS DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS! OFTEN IT WILL NOT SHIFT PROPERLY WHEN ACCELERATING. THIS HAS LED TO SEVERAL INSTANCES WHERE AN ACCIDENT ALMOST OCCURRED. ALSO HAS VERY HARD SHIFTS AND ONCE THERE WAS NO DOWNSHIFT AND THE VEHICLE SLOWED WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ACCELERATING.

  22. Power train, Aug 19, 2016

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE. WHEN THE CONTACT TURNED THE IGNITION KEY TO START THE VEHICLE, IT FAILED TO START AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE STIFFENED. THE VEHICLE STARTED AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AND MADE A LOUD NOISE. AN ERROR MESSAGE DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL THAT READ, "PLACE THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND THEN SELECT DESIRED GEAR", "SERVICE PARK BRAKE", "SERVICE TRANSMISSION". WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 TO 20 MPH, THE GEAR SUDDENLY SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL BY ITSELF AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE NOISE SOUNDED AND FELT LIKE THE TRANSMISSION WAS GOING TO FALL OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT EIGHT MODULES NEEDED TO BE UPDATED. THE EIGHT MODULES WERE UPDATED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V529000 (POWER TRAIN). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,000.

  23. Power train, Aug 19, 2016

THE CAR HAS TRANSMISSION ISSUES. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR DOWN A CITY ROAD IT SOMEHOW SHIFTED ITSELF INTO NEUTRAL PROMPTING ME TO PLACE THE VEHICLE IN PARK BEFORE SELECTING DRIVE AGAIN.. I HAVE ALSO HAD MAJOR ISSUES WHILE TRYING TO MERGE ON THE HIGHWAY, IN WHICH THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT PAST FIRST GEAR, CAUSING THE CAR TO GET UP TO 6K RPM ON THE ENGINE BEFORE HAVING TO COMPLETELY LET OFF THE GAS AND WAIT FOR MY SPEED TO GET BELOW 15 MILES AND HOUR TO REACCELERATE IN ORDER TO GET THE CAR TO SHIFT INTO SECOND GEAR. TRAFFIC WAS GOING 70MPH AND I COULD NOT GET THE VEHICLE TO ACCURATE TO GET UP TO SPEED DUE TO THE TRANSMISSION ISSUE.. I HAVE ON 3 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP WITH COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION AND THEY STATE THEY ARE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE, AND NO CODES HAVE BEEN CALLED OUT SHOWING THE ISSUE (PER THE DEALERSHIP) HOWEVER THE CAR ITSELF HAS TOLD ME I NEEDED TO SHIFT INTO PARK WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE BEEN LIED TO BY THE DEALERSHIP STATING THEY HAVE DRIVEN THE VEHICLE AND WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE HOWEVER THE MILEAGE IN AND OUT WHICH ARE LISTED ON THEIR PAPERWORK ARE THE EXACT SAME NUMBER.. FRUSTRATED THAT THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE IS COMPLETELY UNCHANGED SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR LESS THAN 1 YEAR AGO, JEEP REFUSES TO ASSIST WITH ANYTHING MORE THAN A SOFTWARE UPDATES, AND I AM DIRECTLY PLACING MYSELF AND MY CHILDREN IN HARMS WAY AND RISK OF AN ACCIDENT EVERYTIME I GET BEHIND THE WHEEL, AS IT IS UNPREDICTABILITY OF IF THE VEHICLE WILL SHIFT CORRECTLY OR PLACE ME IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION

  24. Power train, Aug 16, 2016

WHILE DRIVING ON A MAIN BLVD THE JEEP SUDDENLY LOCKED UP MUCH LIKE THE E-BRAKE BEING APPLED, LOTS OF WEIRD NOISES. DASH LIT UP WITH CHECK TRANSMISSION, BRAKES, AND ENGINE WARNINGS. ALMOST CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT. TURNED CAR OFF, LET IT RESET AND WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE. HAPPENED AGAIN THREE DAYS LATER. HAD JEEP TOWED TO DEALER. THIS CAR IS A DEATH TRAP. WORKING ON A RESOLUTION WITH DEALER.

  25. Power train, Aug 16, 2016

9 SPEED TRANSMISSION IS UNRELIABLE AND VERY ROUGH TO DRIVE. WON'T SHIFT UP WHEN IT NEEDS TO, ON OCCASIONS SLAMS INTO GEAR ESPECIALLY FROM 3RD TO 4TH JERKING THE VEHICLE WHEN IT DOES AND DOWNSHIFTS ROUGHLY. THE SOFTWARE HAS BEEN UPDATED TWICE BUT PROBLEMS REMAIN. DEALERSHIPS SAY THAT THERE IS NOTHING MORE THAT CAN BE DONE. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING OVER THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE.
