Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  4. EquipmentDec 21, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. 6. Power train, automatic transmissionJul 12, 2016

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee and 2015 Chrysler 200, Jeep Renegade, RAM ProMaster, and 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles equipped with 9-speed automatic transmissions. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S55.

VEHICLE TREMBLES ON OCCASIONS WHILE IN OPERATION AS IF IT IT'S GOING TO TURN OFF. ADDITIONALLY, THE MOTOR FEELS VERY FORCED ON OCCASIONS AND IT HAS STOPPED WHILE IN OPERATION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE BACK SEAT DOOR HANDLES FALL OFF AND THE DASHBOARD KEEPS MAKING A RATTLING NOISE WHILE THE VEHICLE IS TURNED ON.

  4. Power train, Mar 3, 2016

MY 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE HAS BEEN HAVING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS SINCE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IN NOV '14. WHEN COMING TO A STOP SIGN, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD JUMP INTO LOWER GEAR CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LUNGE FORWARD. HOWEVER, MORE DANGEROUSLY, UPON COMING TO A NEAR STOP AND ACCELERATING, THE TRANSMISSION WILL VERY SLUGGISHLY MOVE THE VEHICLE FORWARD, THEN RAPIDLY ACCELERATE CAUSING THE TIRES TO BREAK TRACTION AND "PEEL OUT". I HAVE NEARLY BEEN IN FOUR ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE, TWO BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION WOULDN'T ACCELERATE, AND THE OTHER TWO BECAUSE I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AS THE FRONT TIRES SPUN OUT OF CONTROL. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE AND IS A CLEAR SAFETY HAZARD. I HAVE HAD MY JEEP AT A DEALERSHIP FOR WARRANTY SERVICE ON THIS MATTER TWICE NOW, WITH ABSOLUTELY ZERO CORRECTIVE ACTIONS. ON BOTH OCCASIONS, THEY "UPDATED THE TRANSMISSION SOFTWARE" BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTED. TODAY, WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, I ATTEMPTED A LEFT HAND TURN WITH NO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE TRANSMISSION, WITH THE ENGINE AT 2,500 RPMS, VERY SLOWLY MOVED THE VEHICLE, THEN IT SPUN OUT THE FRONT TIRES ALMOST COLLIDING ME WITH A SCHOOL BUS WAITING TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN. THIS TRANSMISSION IS DANGEROUS, JEEP DOES NOT HAVE AN ADEQUATE FIX TO THIS PROBLEM, AND MY VEHICLE WARRANTY IS ABOUT TO EXPIRE. I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE EXPIRATION, I WOULD BE WILLING TO PAY SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS TO FIX THIS ISSUE, BUT IT DOESN'T APPEAR THAT JEEP HAS AN ADEQUATE FIX TO THE PROBLEM.

  5. Power train, Wheels, Feb 29, 2016

HAVE HAD SERIOUS TRANSMISSION ISSUES SINCE APPROX. 1800 MILES. HAVE HAD TRANSMISSION "FLASHED" NUMEROUS TIMES. IT GETS WORSE EACH TIME. STALLS, WON'T ACCELERATE, HANGS IN GEAR, HESITATES, JERKS, JUMPS, IF TRYING TO GET INTO TRAFFIC OR GO ACROSS A BUSY ROAD, YOU NEVER KNOW IF IT IS GOING TO GO OR NOT. VERY DANGEROUS. I HAVE OWNED OVER 100 VEHICLES (AGE 71) AND THIS IS THE WORSE TRANSMISSION I HAVE EVER HAD. JEEP HAS NO FIX FOR THE PROBLEM., SO I WAS TOLD BY DEALERSHIP PERSONNEL. THE PROBLEM WAS EVIDENT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS INTRODUCED AND HELD UP THE INITIAL INTRODUCTION. AFTER 3 YEARS STILL DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. THE 2106'S HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION!!!

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLAMPS DID NOT PRODUCE ENOUGH LIGHT. IN ADDITION, WHEN THE HIGH BEAMS WERE ILLUMINATED, THEY WERE STILL DIMLY LIT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE HEADLAMPS NEEDED TO BE RAISED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, VISIBILITY WAS STILL POOR WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FAILURE WAS INHERENT TO THIS MODEL VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 7,000. 7. Power train, Feb 22, 2016

SINCE PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE, THE TRANSMISSION IS VERY SLUGGISH. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A YIELD (NOT FULL STOP) THE TRANSMISSION WILL REFUSE TO ENGAGE FOR UP TO 3 SECONDS. WHEN IT DOES ENGAGE, IT JERKS AND CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO LUNGE.

  8. Power train, Feb 17, 2016

THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS CAR HAS SERIOUS PROBLEMS WHICH RENDER THE CAR UNPREDICTABLE AND UNSAFE. ON LEAVING FROM A SIGNAL AFTER A FULL STOP THERE IS NO RESPONSE AFTER STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR - THE CAR DOES NOT MOVE AND THEN SUDDENLY LURCHES FORWARD. THIS HAPPENS FREQUENTLY BUT NOT ALWAYS. ALSO, LEAVING FROM A FULL STOP, SOMETIMES THE VEHICLE TAKES RIGHT OFF AND THEN BOGS DOWN COMPLETELY WHICH IS VERY HAZARDOUS WHEN IN ONCOMING TRAFFIC OR TURNING A CORNER. IN ADDITION STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR WHILE ON THE ROAD TO PASS A CAR THERE IS OFTEN NO RESPONSE FROM THE TRANSMISSION AND THEN SUDDENLY THE TRANSMISSION TAKES HOLD. AGAIN, FREQUENT BUT NOT ALL THE TIME. ON PUTTING THE CAR INTO REVERSE THE REAR END AND TRANSMISSION HAVE A LOAD BANGING CLUNK AND THEN TAKE HOLD WITH A LURCH. ON A DOWNSLOPE THERE IS NO SLOWING OF THE VEHICLE VIA THE TRANSMISSION AND THE BRAKES HAVE TO CONSTANTLY BE APPLIED. BETWEEN 20 ' 40 MPH THE VEHICLE OFTEN SPEEDS UP WHEN WE TAKE OUR FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR. THE TRANSMISSION IS COMPLETELY UNPREDICTABLE MAKING IT TOTALLY UNSAFE TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE DEPENDABLY. WE HAVE TAKEN OUR JEEP INTO THE DEALER 6 TIMES BUT THEY ARE UNABLE TO MAKE ANY IMPROVEMENT AND IN FACT ALL ISSUES ARE GETTING MORE FREQUENT AND PRONOUNCED.

  9. Electrical system, Wheels, Other or unspecified, Feb 16, 2016

THE VEHICLE JUST FROZE UP YESTERDAY 15 FEB 2016 . IT WOULD NOT START , THE BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY LOCKED UP ON IT. TRIED AND TRIED TO GET IT TO START AND IT WOULD NOT. TOOK IT IN THIS MORNING ON A FLAT BED HAULER AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AT I 77 JEEP IN RIPLEY WV. THEY FIRST STATED IT WAS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE , THEN SAID IT WAS THE BATTERY , BUT I GUESS IT WAS ME IT HER OF THOSE . SO IT'S STILL THERE AND NO WORD WHAT CAUSE IT. IF IT HAD LOCKED UP WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING IT IT WOULD BE A VERY BAD RESULTS . THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONEDARE AND WAS IN THE GARAGE.

PARKED VEHICLE AT MY PLACE OF BUSINESS, GOT OUT, WALKED INSIDE. WHILE INSIDE I HEARD A THUMP, WHEN I OPENED THE DOOR TO GO BACK OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE WAS TWO FEET FROMM THE DOOR AND THE BUMPER UP AGAINST A PROPANE TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY WHEN I GOT OUT AND WAS FOR A FEW MINUTES, I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I HAVE CCTV CAMERA VIDEO. THE VEHICLE BUMPER HAS DAMAGE.

MY 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE LATITUDE SHUT OFF ON ME WHILE I WAS DRIVING NOT EVEN A FULL WEEK OF OWNING IT. THE VEHICLE GAUGES GO TO ZERO AND I LOOSE POWER STEERING AND WHEN I APPLY THE GAS PEDAL NOTHING HAPPENS. ALL I AM ABLE TO DO IS PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AND HOPEFULLY NOT HAVE ANYONE BEHIND ME SO THAT I CAN TRY AND PULL OVER WITH NO POWER STEERING. I HAVE TAKEN IT INTO THE DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS SHOWING THEM BOTH VIDEO AND PHOTO DOCUMENTATION OF WHAT IS HAPPENING AND THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THIS ISSUE AND HAVE NOT PROVIDED ME WITH AN ALTERNATIVE AS TO GETTING ANOTHER VEHICLE OR MY MONEY BACK. THE VEHICLE FIRST SHUT OFF ON ME 18SEP2015 AND HAS CONTINUED TO DO SO ON THE HIGHWAY AND ON CITY STREETS WITH THE MOST RECENT TIME BEING 14FEB2016. I HAVE ALL OF MY DOCUMENTATION OF EVERY TIME ITS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WITH NO RESOLUTION BEING PROVIDED.

  12. Other or unspecified, Feb 13, 2016

ON 2 OCCASIONS NOW I HAVE ACCIDENTALLY LEFT THE ENGINE RUNNING AND IN GEAR AT A GAS STATION TO REFUEL WHEN I THOUGHT I HAD TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. IT SEEMS IF YOU DO NOT MAKE SURE THE CAR IS IN PARK, THE ENGINE WILL NOT TURN OFF. WHILE I APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT THE ENGINE IS VERY QUITE, IT IS VERY DISTURBING TO ME THAT I MAY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IF THIS CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE ENGINE TURN OFF IF THE KEY EXITS THE DRIVING COMPARTMENT AS THIS WOULD KEEP THAT FROM HAPPENING.

  13. Other or unspecified, Feb 5, 2016

PERIODIC UNUSUAL REVVING IN LOWER GEARS WHILE ACCELERATING. VEHICLE TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR "FLASH" AND MULTIPLE RE-ASSESSMENT BUT DEALER STATES VEHICLE PERFORMS AS "DESIGNED". DEALERSHIP STATES MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME REASON BY OTHER CUSTOMERS. CASE WORKERS FROM FCA OFFERED TRANSMISSION WARRANTY EXTENSION FOR LIFE BUT RETRACTED OFFER AFTER IT WAS FOUND WE HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED EXTENDED WARRANTY. CASE WORKER THEN OFFERED 2 YEARS WORTH OF OIL CHANGES. THE OFFER WAS REFUSED SO COMPLAINT HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR THE SECOND TIME.

  16. Other or unspecified, Feb 3, 2016

IS THE ENGINE START/STOP SYSTEM DANGEROUS? I THINK SO. WHEN I PULL INTO PARKING SPACES AND BEGIN TO SHUT DOWN THE CAR (SHIFT INTO PARK, GO TO PUSH THE ENGINE STOP BUTTON), THE ESS SYSTEM ACTIVATES. BY "ACTIVATES," I MEAN THAT THE CAR TURNS OVER. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN EVERY TIME, BUT IT HAPPENS OFTEN ENOUGH. IN ONE EXAMPLE, I PULLED INTO A PARKING SPACE AND MY PASSENGER WAS MOVING FASTER THAN ME, AND AS HE WAS GETTING OUT OF THE CAR, THE ENGINE TURNED OVER AS IF TO START (BUT IT WAS ALREADY STARTED). SOME KIND OF SIGNAL IS BEING SENT FROM THE ESS SYSTEM, WHICH HAS NO CONSISTENT BEHAVIOR, SO YOU HAVE NO IDEA IF IT IS WORKING OR NOT. I BELIEVE NHTSA NEEDS TO LOOK INTO HOW THE ESS SYSTEM FUNCTIONS IN NORMAL DAILY CAR USE. THIS BEHAVIOR HAS OCCURRED SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW. IN ANOTHER INSTANCE, THE BEHAVIOR WAS THE SAME, EXCEPT I DID NOT HAVE A PASSENGER TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE CAR.

  18. Power train, Jan 28, 2016

UNDER ACCELERATION FROM A STOP (EITHER STRAIGHT LINE OR MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN) THE RPMS INCREASE BEFORE THE VEHICLE RESPONDS. WHEN IT DOES, THE VEHICLE LUNGES FORWARD UNPREDICTABLY. DURING MANUAL SHIFTING AND BRAKING (WHILE IN MOTION) THE RPMS SHOOT UP TO BEFORE TRANSMISSION ENGAGES 4TH GEAR WHEN DOWNSHIFTING FROM 5TH CAUSING A MOMENTARY FREEWHEELING SCENARIO. DURING ACCELERATION FROM ABOUT 10-15 MPH THE VEHICLE ONCE AGAIN INCREASES RPMS AND THEN LUNGES FORWARD. THE VEHICLE PERFORMS HARD SHIFTING BETWEEN GEARS WHILE IN MOTION. AT FREEWAY SPEEDS THE TRANSMISSION MAY NOT DOWNSHIFT/ RESPOND OR ACCELERATE FOR 3-4 SECONDS. WHEN REVERSING THE THE SAME LUNGING SCENARIO OCCURS HOWEVER IT IS LESS PREDICABLE AS REVERSE GEAR IS TALLER. OVERALL PERFORMANCE IS SPORADIC AND UNPREDICTABLE.

VERY DANGEROUS, LOST CONTROL OF POWER STEERING, GAS AND BRAKES. WAS ABLE TO PUT CAR IN PARK ON SIDE OF ROAD, RESTART IT AND GET HOME. IT HAPPENED AGAIN THE NEXT MORNING AND WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. SERVICE DEPT. RAN ALL UPDATES AND THE CAR SHUT OFF ON THEM WHILE TESTING IT TOO. HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR 2 WEEKS AND THEY SAY IT WAS DUE TO EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION AND AR REPLACING THE ENGINE. I DON'T BELIEVE THIS TO THE CAUSE; NEVER GOT A WARNING LIGHT AT ALL AND CAR DOES RESTART AND RUN AFTER IT SHUTS ITSELF OFF. SCARED TO DRIVE IT ONCE I GET IT BACK AGAIN, IT IS REALLY LIKE A DEATH TRAP WHEN IT SHUTS OFF. YOU ARE THE MERCY OF ALL THE DRIVERS AROUND YOU TO GET OUT OF YOUR WAY. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT OR GET KILLED IF THEY DON'T FIGURE THIS OUT SOON.
