Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  4. EquipmentDec 21, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S55.

  1. Electrical system, Engine, Feb 20, 2015

AFTER SITTING AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE MOST PART OF MY DAY, I LEFT WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AS I CAME TO GET FIXED. HOWEVER, IN ADDITION TO MY RADIO NOT FUNCTIONING; WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FIXED AFTER THIS MY SECOND UPGRADE IN 2 WEEKS, THERE WAS THE ADDITIONAL MATTER OF MY ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON AS I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP FROM HAVING MY RADIO 'FIXED'. SO I FIND MYSELF BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP TODAY FOR MY RADIO THAT WAS NOT FIXED THE YESTERDAY AND MY ENGINE LIGHT THAT CAME ON AFTER LEAVING THEM THE DAY BEFORE. WHEN I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER, HE SAID THE RADIO IS GETTING ANOTHER UPDATE; APPARENTLY THE UPDATE YESTERDAY AND LAST WEEK WASN'T ENOUGH. ALSO, NOW I NEED THIS DETRIMENTAL ENGINE PART THAT MYSTERIOUSLY WENT BAD OVER NIGHT. HE SAID THEY DON'T HAVE THE PART AND I WILL HAVE TO DRIVE MY CAR WITH THE ENGINE LIGHT ON UNTIL THE PART COMES IN. I INFORMED HIM HOW UNCOMFORTABLE I AM WITH THAT SUGGESTION SINCE MY FIRST VISIT WAS FOR THE RADIO AND THE CAR ACCELERATING BY ITSELF OUT OF NOWHERE. CURRENTLY, I AM IN PRAYER HOPING THE HUMANITY SETS IN AND THEY DON'T SEND ME ON MY WAY IN A VEHICLE THAT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. PRAY FOR ME. *TR

  2. Engine, Feb 14, 2015

WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TODAY SHE NOTICED WHEN TRYING TO FIND A PARKING SPOT, THE ENGINE SPEED INCREASED WITHOUT FOOT ON GAS PEDAL, SHE HAD TO HARD BRAKE TO GET VEHICLE TO STOP. I TOOK IT OUT TONIGHT AND AS I WAS IN CITY TRAFFIC THE JEEP WOULD RACE UP TO 2000 RPMS WHEN FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. I HAD TO PRESS ON BRAKE HARDER THAN NORMAL TO GET THE VEHICLE TO NOT HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. CALLED DEALERSHIP TO REPORT PROBLEM. AT THIS POINT I AM SCARED FOR ANYONE IN MY FAMILY TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE SAME THING HAPPENED AT LEAST 4 TIMES ON THE WAY HOME. *TR

  3. Air bags, Feb 9, 2015

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE CONTACT VEERED THE VEHICLE TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID ANOTHER VEHICLE AND THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED INDEPENDENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE AIR BAGS FUNCTIONED AS DESIGNED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS MADE AWARE OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V041000 (AIR BAGS) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,100.

  4. Power train, Electrical system, Feb 9, 2015

IT APPEARS I'VE GOTTEN THE TRANSMISSION BUG THAT SEEMS TO BE GOING AROUND. ONE MONTH OLD 2015 TRAILHAWK V6 AUTOMATIC WITH 738 MILES ON IT. STARTED THE CAR(2-7-2015) AND NOTIFICATION CAME ON DASHBOARD THAT READ, "SERVICE TRANSMISSION," "4WD DEACTIVATED," "REMOTE START DEACTIVATED,' "AND PUT CAR INTO PARK THEN SHIFT TO DESIRED GEAR." I MANAGED TO GET THE JEEP ROLLING AND DROVE DIRECTLY TO DEALERSHIP. I TALKED TO THE SERVICE REP THIS MORNING(2-9-2015), AND BEFORE HE COULD SAY ANYTHING, I TOLD HIM IT WAS THE TCM. HE ACTUALLY LAUGHED BECAUSE I KNEW EVERY PROBLEM. I GUESS BEST CASE SCENARIO IS THAT THE RESET WORKS. IF NOT I'M SURE THERE WILL BE A TCM REPLACEMENT. WORST CASE SCENARIO IS THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, AND AT THAT POINT, THEY CAN KEEP IT. *TR

  5. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Feb 6, 2015

I BOUGHT MY JEEP ONE MONTH AGO. RECENTLY I NOTICED THAT ENGINE REVS UP AND ACCELERATES BY ITSELF AS I AM TRYING TO STOP. I HAVE TO CONTROL THIS BY PRESSING THE BREAK A LITTLE HARDER. I AM AFRAID I WILL REAR END ANOTHER CAR. I HAD NO IDEA THIS PROBLEM WAS SO COMMON. NOW I WISH I HADN'T PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE. *JS

  6. Steering, Electrical system, Vehicle speed control, Feb 5, 2015

MY VEHICLE INSTANTANEOUSLY PICKED UP SPEED WHILE I WAS COMING TO A STOP; MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE GAS PEDAL. A QUICK JERKING MOTION OF THE STEERING WHEEL HAPPENED QUICKLY WITH THE ACCELERATION. THIS CAUSED ME TO PRESS MUCH HARDER ON MY BRAKES TO STOP MY VEHICLE FROM HITTING A CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THIS IS A DANGEROUS AND VERY SCARY PROBLEM AND I AM GRATEFUL TO NOT HAVE CAUSED HARM TO ANYONE. MY GAS CONSUMPTION VARIES BECAUSE OF THE REQUIRED PEDAL PRESSURE SOMETIMES NEEDED TO ACCELERATE SINCE THE GEARS SEEM NOT TO SWITCH OVER AS THEY SHOULD. ALSO, MY RADIO HAS BEEN BLACKING OUT, TURNING OFF AND ON, AND FAILING TO WORK AT ALL. HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER TOMORROW FOR WHAT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME AS A NEEDED "SOFTWARE UPDATE." THIS IS A NEW TRUCK. MY JEEP HAS NOT YET MADE IT TO THE REQUIRED MILES FOR ITS FIRST OIL CHANGE. (SIGH). *TR

  7. Power train, Equipment adaptive/mobility, Engine, Feb 5, 2015

2015 CHEROKEE LATITUDE 4 CYL. HAVE HAD VEHICLE FOR 2 MONTHS, DURING THIS TIME THE TRANSMISSION HAS HAD A MIND OF ITS OWN. ACCELERATING DURING BRAKING, WHICH IN AND OF ITSELF IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS IT HAS HAPPENED WHILE SLOWING TO MAKE A TURN, IF YOU NEED TO TURN AT 10 MPH AND THE CAR ACCELERATES PAST 25 YOU ARE LOOKING AT AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. LAG IN DOWNSHIFT WHILE TRYING TO ACCELERATE, LOUD UN EXPLAINED CLUNK WHILE PLACING INTO PARK, NUMEROUS ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ACTIVATIONS. CALLED LOCAL DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT I NEEDED TO WAIT A FEW DAYS TO SEE IF WARNING LIGHT RESETS ITSELF BEFORE BRINGING IN. THE TRANSMISSION NEVER SEEMS TO ACTUALLY SHIFT INTO 9TH GEAR, WHICH INTURN HAMPERS THE FWY MILEAGE CLAIMS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS VEHICLE. IVE NOTICED THE TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE EXCEED 240 DEGREES ON NUMEROUS TIMES, THIS CANNOT BE GOOD. I WILL BE TAKING VEHICLE TO DEALER, HOPEFULLY IN AN EFFORT TO GET THIS RESOLVED. WITH ALL OF THE REVIEWS AND PROBLEM, WILL IT TAKE AN UNFORTUNATE FATALITY FOR CHRYSLER TO ACTUALLY RESOLVE THIS, AS IN THE CASE OF THE TOYOTA ACCELERATION PROBLEMS? *TR

  8. Power train, Feb 3, 2015

TRANSMISSION DOWN SHIFTS ON DOWNHILL AT TIMES. RPM INCREASES AND VEHICLE SPEEDS UP BEFORE COMPLETING THE DOWN SHIFT. THE TRANS. SHOULD NOT BE DOWN SHIFTING ON ITS OWN IN THIS SITUATION. THIS WILL BE DANGEROUS IN SNOWY CONDITIONS, AS THE SHIFT IS UNEXPECTED. THE TRANS. IS INCONSISTENT ON LEVEL DRIVING. SOMETIMES IT PICKS GEAR 7, OTHER TIMES IT PICKS GEAR 8. THIS AFFECTS GAS MILEAGE AND CANNOT BE OVER RIDDEN BY USING THE MANUAL SHIFT MODE. I AM AT THE MERCY OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE MANUAL SHIFT OVERRIDE IS VIRTUALLY USELESS. I CANNOT OVERRIDE THE GEAR SELECTED. THE INDICATOR SHOW ONLY SHOWS THE SHIFTER ACTIONS. I DOES NOT INDICATE THE GEAR YOU ARE ACTUALLY IN. THE TRANS. DOES NOT RESPOND TO MANUAL SHIFTING PREFERENCES. IT WILL BE DANGEROUS IN WINTER WEATHER WHEN YOU CANNOT DEPEND ON A MANUAL DOWNSHIFT TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I AM USED TO OTHER MANUFACTURERS TRANSMISSIONS THAT LOCK IN AND HOLD THE MANUAL GEAR SELECTED. I SUSPECT THAT THERE WILL BE CHEROKEE ACCIDENTS IN WINTER WEATHER DUE TO LOSS OF CONTROL, BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION EITHER HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN WHICH IS INCONSISTENT, OR BECAUSE MANUAL TRANSMISSION CONTROL IS INEFFECTIVE, AND NONRESPONSIVE. *TR

  9. Power train, Feb 2, 2015

WHEN IDLING AFTER A 20 MINUTE DRIVE, THE "SERVICE TRANSMISSION" WARNING AND THE "CHECK ENGINE LAMP" CAME ON AND WOULDN'T TURN OFF. I MANAGED TO DRIVE SLOWLY HOME - IT WAS ABOUT 20F AND SNOWING - IN A DESERTED AREA. VERY BAD SITUATION. *TR

  12. Power train, Feb 2, 2015

THIS 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE LIMITED, WITH V6 ENGINE AND 9 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, OPERATED SMOOTHLY FOR 750 MILES, BUT THEN SUDDENLY THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO DOWNSHIFT VERY ROUGHLY WHEN COASTING TO A STOP OR BRAKING TO A STOP. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE WITH THE SHIFTS BELOW FIFTH GEAR. WHEN COASTING, AS THE DOWNSHIFT TO EITHER 4TH OR 3RD GEAR OCCURS, THE ENGINE REVS AND THE CAR ACTUALLY ACCELERATES BRIEFLY (FOR 1 OR 2 SECONDS) ON ITS OWN. IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, THAT MAKES QUICKLY APPLYING THE BRAKES MANDATORY TO AVOID GETTING TOO CLOSE TO (OR HITTING) THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU AS THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES. *TR

  13. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Jan 30, 2015

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON AND THE CAR DOES NOT DOWNSHIFT PROPERLY. THE ENGINE REVS UP OVER 2500 RPMS AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES AND TRYING TO SLOW DOWN. (LAST NIGHT THE CAR REVVED UP TO 3200 RPMS WHEN COMING TO A STOP.) *TR

  14. Power train, Engine, Jan 28, 2015

WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE, DASH LIGHTS WOULD FLASH AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON. MESSAGES WOULD STATE THE THERE WAS A FAILURE WITH THE START/STOP OR 4X4 OR TRANSMISSION. VEHICLE WOULD NOT ENGAGE ANY GEARS, D (DRIVE) INDICATE WOULD BE FLASHING, AND I COULD ONLY REV THE ENGINE. VEHICLE WOULD NOT ADVANCE AND WOULD NOT ENGAGE ANY GEARS. HAD TO SHUT OFF ENGINE AND TURN IT BACK ON SEVERAL TIMES TO GET THE TRANSMISSION TO ENGAGE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS STILL ON. TAKEN IN FOR SERVICE FOUR TIMES NOW, UPDATE FIRMWARE, REPLACE PCM, AND NOW THEY ARE GOING TO REPLACE THE WIRING HARNESS. VEHICLE PURCHASED ON 12/31 AND HAS BEEN IN FOR SERVICE WITH MAJOR FAILURES WITH THE TRANSMISSION SINCE 1/13/2015. *TR

  15. Power train, Jan 22, 2015

2015 JEEP CHEROKEE LATITUDE. WHEN COMING TO A STOP, AT ABOUT 25 MPH, THE TACHOMETER READS 1250 RPM THEN THE TRANSMISSION DROPS OUT OF GEAR WHICH MAKES THE VEHICLE SPEED UP, MAKING ME BRAKE HARDER, THEN THE TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTS AND THE ENGINE REVS UP TO 2000 RPM MAKING THE CAR LURCH FORWARD. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND HAS MADE ME FEEL LIKE I MAY REAR END A CAR ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. *TR

AS I WAS GETTING OFF THE FREEWAY, THE VEHICLE WAS DOWN SHIFTING, AND AS IT GOT TO THE LOWER GEARS, STARTED GETTING VERY JUMPY. WHEN IT GOT TO FIRST GEAR, IT SEEMED THAT IT DOWNSHIFTED ALL THE WAY INTO NEUTRAL. WHEN STARTING FROM A DEAD STOP, THE VEHICLE WOULD JUMP INTO FIRST GEAR AND WAS JUMPY SHIFTING UP GEARS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AND THEY TOLD ME THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY ALSO SAID IT WAS STILL DRIVABLE. I WAS OUT OF TOWN AT THE TIME SO I JUST PLANNED TO TAKE IT TO MY LOCAL DEALER WHEN I GOT HOME, AS THEY SAID IT WOULD BE ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS AVAILABLE. I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP AND DIDN'T MAKE IT MORE THAN A MILE BEFORE I LOST ALL USE OF THE TRANSMISSION, AND HAD TO BE TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY HAVE SINCE REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION. *TR

  23. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Service brakes, Dec 29, 2014

WHILE BRAKING AT 24 MILES PER HOUR THE CAR ABRUPTLY DOWNSHIFTS AND CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE. I HAVE NOTICED THE LONGER I DRIVE THE VEHICLE, IT WILL HAPPEN WHILE I AM SLOWING DOWN AT HIGHER SPEEDS AT WELL. I HAVE TAKEN THE JEEP TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE FLASHED AND UPDATED MY TRANSMISSION BUT THEY SAID IT WAS FIXED BUT IT WAS NOT. IT IS ACTING UP MORE THAN IT WAS BEFORE. IT IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THIS CAR ESPECIALLY WHEN TRYING TO BRAKE AROUND A CURVE BECAUSE IT WILL SPEED UP BY ITSELF. *TR

HAVE HAD TWO TIMES THE VEHICLE TRANSMISSION WARNING CAME ON TO "SERVICE TRANSMISSION" WITH NO RESPONSE FROM DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR. AT THESE TWO TIMES THE VEHICLE WAS AT A FULL STOP AND THE DASH WAS FULL OF WARNING LIGHTS FOR DIFFERENT THINGS. WHEN THE TRANSMISSION WAS SHIFTED FROM DRIVE TO PARK, THERE WAS A LOUD AND VIOLENT JERKING BY THE TRANSMISSION. THIS TRANSMISSION HAS HAD IT'S SOFTWARE UPDATED MANY TIMES, WHICH HAS NOT HELPED. DEALER TECH WAS ABLE TO OBSERVE THIS CONDITION AND REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY. AFTER REPLACING THE VALVE BODY AND AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 50 MILES ON A INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION WARNING CAME ON. TOOK THE NEXT EXIT AND STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC STOPLIGHT, THE CAR WOULD LUNGE AND JERK VIOLENTLY TRYING TO GO. SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND LET THE CAR RESET ITSELF. WILL NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE AGAIN AND WILL ASK CHRYSLER TO SUPPLY A RENTAL VEHICLE AT THEIR EXPENSE UNTIL THEY HAVE REPLACED MY VEHICLE. THIS MAKES THREE TIMES THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE AS FAR I AM CONCERNED IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
