Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 19, 2026
This complaint is being filed regarding a failed and botched remedy of two federal safety recalls: the Crankshaft Position Sensor recall and Safety Recall Z46 (High-Pressure Fuel Pump) on my Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel. The vehicle was delivered to Kendall DCJR of Soldotna, AK for the recall services. The technician performed the recalls, but the high-pressure fuel pump failed immediately, resulting in systemic fuel leaking directly into the engine's crankcase oil pan. The fuel contamination thinned the motor oil, dropped oil pressure, caused the oil filter to collapse, and resulted in a catastrophically blown motor.Physical inspection confirms the entire fuel system is filled with destructive metal shavings and debris ("glitter") from the disintegrating pump, requiring a complete replacement of all fuel components and the engine assembly. The vehicle has been rendered entirely undrivable and has been sitting out of service at the authorized dealer for over 30 cumulative days. The manufacturer (Stellantis/Jeep) has failed to provide a safe, effective, and timely remedy for these safety recalls, and is refusing to issue a Corporate Rental Authorization (CRA) or alternative transportation while my vehicle remains grounded due to the safety defect's failure. This is a complete failure to execute a federal safety recall remedy in a reasonable timeframe.

My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee suffered a total intake manifold failure directly resulting from a secondary breakdown of Safety Recall W79 (NHTSA Campaign 20V-699). Physical teardown at an independent facility exposed a 70% engine runner restriction and seized glow plugs due to volatile exhaust sulfur, creating an active fire risk. On July 9, 2026, LaFontaine Fenton was presented with clear mechanical photos and a continuous 2023 dealer repair loop under Customer ID [XXX], but formally refused to open a corporate STAR Case or dispatch flatbed transport to remedy this active safety defect. Electrical system, Vehicle speed control, Engine, Jul 1, 2026
My Son just bought the car from a private party. On our way home the engine light and a lightning bolt icon illuminated on the dash, followed by the vehicle going into limp mode. We had the vehicle scanned for codes and it came back with P0336 (crankshaft position sensor performance). After much investigation online, we found out that this is a known issue with the crankshaft position sensor and, most importantly, the tone wheel on the back of the engine. We looked up recalls on the vehicle and found a safety recall had been issued. While some vehicles affected received replacement of the tone wheel and sensor, others just received a software update. This particular vehicle received the software update. The issue is that the magnetic material on the tone wheel delaminates from the tone wheel. This is a costly repair that should have been fixed correctly from the beginning, not just a software patch. It is a safety concern because it is dangerous when you are traveling at highway speeds and it goes into limp mode.
Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, May 21, 2026
My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit EcoDiesel (VIN: [XXX] ) experienced a catastrophic engine failure at approximately 116,000 miles while driving. The vehicle suddenly displayed an oil pressure warning, and I immediately shut the engine down to avoid further damage and potential safety risks. At the time I shut the engine off, the engine was not making catastrophic knocking noises and was not leaking oil heavily. The vehicle was towed to Astorg Dodge Chrysler Jeep in Parkersburg, WV. Before inspection, I specifically instructed dealership personnel not to start the engine because I suspected a serious oil-related issue and wanted to avoid causing additional damage. Despite these instructions, the dealership started and ran the engine anyway. After the dealership started the vehicle, the engine condition reportedly worsened significantly, including severe engine noises and much heavier oil leakage. I was later informed the vehicle would require complete engine replacement, with estimated repair costs ranging from approximately $10,000 to $24,000. At the time of failure, the vehicle was also subject to the unresolved Z46 High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) recall, which had not yet been completed. I had previously been informed that recall parts were available and the repair would be scheduled. I am concerned that the unresolved recall and/or related fuel system issues may have contributed to this catastrophic engine failure. I am also concerned about the potential safety risk associated with sudden oil pressure loss and catastrophic engine damage while operating the vehicle. I am submitting this complaint so the failure and unresolved recall involvement are documented and reviewed. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I took my car to the dealer for the recalls. They are basically only putting a band aid on the issue. They are telling me they did both recalls but it didn't fix the issue. Klaben in Kent Ohio. They basically did just a flash on it but that didn't fix the issue (LOSS OF CRANKSHAFT POSITION). Vechicle returns to limp mode. Almost causing several accidents on interstate. Engine 3.6. variable valve timing enough jeep at one time offered a longer warranty. Replaced cams, heads, phasers, oil pump, computer, timing chain, timing gears, over 9000.00 parts and labor. Mopar parts very problematic with the varible timing valve train.after problems in timing was fixed, there now is a oil pressure problem. Master mechanic credentials worked on vechicle several time and hour to try to fix problems. Mechanic now say only way to make vechicle safe at this point is to put a new engine in.this will cost over 13000 dollars over the 9000.00. I have already spent. Scariest part of this vechicle is when on a 70mph interstate and vechicle goes to a top speed of 40mph.

Engine and power train components show failure. Remanufactured 3.6 L pentastar engine camshaft journals and bearings show circumferential scoring from oil starvation. Rocker arm needle bearings failed shedding debris that clogged oil passages. Technician said root cause is oil pressure retention issue or internal contamination. Not caused by improper oil level but a design defect. Teardown report and photos available.

6 months ago, I was driving on the interstate and the ESC system light came on, the vehicle lost power/ability to accelerate, and would only allow acceleration after pulling over and restarting the car. This happened several more times on the interstate, and when the ESC system kicked in it would suddenly lurch the car down about 15 mph and leave no ability to accelerate, causing near collisions at high rates of speed. After eventually taking it to the dealership, it turned out to be failed lifters on the driver's side cam shaft, a known design issue that has apparently plagued the Pentastar engines. This all happened in spite of meticulous maintenance and no warning signs from the engine whatsoever. How is such a significant, known design defect that causes such dangerous driving conditions never been flagged for a recall?

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V699000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING), and the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure occurred. The contact stated that coolant had leaked onto the driveway. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and it was determined that the radiator was fractured. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the EGR cooler failed (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and there was coolant intrusion into the oil. The contact was informed that the EGR cooler needed to be replaced, along with the coolant bottle, the upper and lower radiator hoses, and possibly the high-pressure fuel pump. The vehicle remained at the dealer unrepaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the warranty had expired. The contact was informed that the recall repair was completed with an upgraded part. The failure mileage was approximately 173,000.

Jeep recalled the oil cooler as it can crack and cause leaking into the coolant yet the problem still persists. This can be inspected on my vehicle at any time. Jeep is claiming that since it was “repaired” (recalled) this is a customer problem. I have been quoted over 10k to fix a problem that was never correct from the recall Jeep performed. Jeep has failed in this recall remedy and are pushing customers to fix repairs as a result of their failed actions. Failed oil coolers can cause the vehicle to catch fire which could burn down someone’s home if the car catches fire while parked in a garage or structure. The nearby Jeep dealer called and confirmed that the issues I am currently having is a result of the cracked and recalled replacement oil cooler. There are countless number of people online how have also had the same issue and been told by Jeep and dealerships that this is now a customer responsibility because they provided a “warranty” in addition to the recall. The warranty is a result of a class action law suit against Jeep for emissions issues. I did not and do not have any warning light on my vehicle. I just had evidence of coolant leaking with a coolant smell when in front of the vehicle.

Engine light came on: took in for service. The dealer recommends replacing a damaged Intake Manifold for $2,247. 33. It appears there are recalls on these for same year as my vehicle involving both Jeep and Ram Trucks. However My vin does not fall into the recall? I find this odd and I understand there has to be a cut off, but i believe my vehicle was made around the same time and I don’t think Chrysler was aware of the problem until later… I also have Engine Oil cooler leaking which I am unsure if it is related, but now I have extensive repairs for Coolant flushing/ radiator hoses and coolant hoses, metal fuel lines, and thermostat… I am just disappointed that a recall is valid on the same model and year as mine, I was unaware and now I have a $8,570.40 quote to get this fixed. I am wondering if the EGR cooler failure has led to this massive problem as I am aware the engine oil cooler and EGR cooler are releated along with manifold function/ efficiency. Now I have Oil and coolant mixing in my system… If my eco diesel jeep were included in the original recall, I may not be dealing with this unexpected visit. The 3.6L engine has a misfire and that problem was addressed by replacing the following new plugs, coilpacks, injector, plenum gaskets and it ended up being the rocker arms or cam shaft This has to be address as it is a wide problem with EVERY one of these engines.

The engine and powertrain are affected by a defect described in Safety Recall 66A / NHTSA 23V-411 (loss of crankshaft position). Despite the recall software update being performed, my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee continues to display Diagnostic Trouble Code P0336 (Crankshaft Position Sensor Performance). This issue causes intermittent stalling, hard starts, and loss of engine power, which creates a serious risk of crash if the vehicle stalls while driving. The safety defect described in the recall — tone wheel magnetic material delamination leading to crankshaft signal loss — is still present. Two diagnostic reports (one from an FCA-authorized dealership and one from an independent mechanic) confirm the presence of DTC P0336. The Service Manager at the dealership agreed this is likely recall-related but said FCA corporate must authorize hardware repair. FCA (Case #93427994) has refused to approve full repair, leaving the safety defect unresolved. The defect has been confirmed by the dealership and independent service center and persists despite the software reprogramming remedy. Warning lights (check engine) are active and the issue is repeatable.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving 45 MPH, the message "Service Electronic Throttle Control" was displayed, and the check engine warning light and the electrical system warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that the failure was part of a recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The contact stated that the powertrain control module software was updated. The contact stated that the failure persisted. Upon further investigation, the contact found document part 573 on the NHTSA website related to additional recall repairs. The contact stated that the dealer refused to repair the vehicle. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V411000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and assigned a case manager. The failure mileage was 187,799.

Complaint to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Subject: Vehicle Sold by CarMax with Open Recall Campaign Z46 in Violation of Stop-Sale Order Dear NHTSA, I am reporting CarMax for selling a vehicle affected by Recall Campaign Z46 (NHTSA ID: 22V406) in violation of the stop-sale requirement. In November 2023, I purchased a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Diesel from CarMax while it was still subject to this recall and the part needed for repair was on national backorder. CarMax failed to disclose the open recall or the serious safety implications. As a result, I experienced significant engine and DEF system problems and incurred over $3,800 in related expenses. The vehicle was eventually repossessed, and I had to borrow nearly $2,500 to recover it. In addition to these costs, I experienced credit score damage and emotional stress from the situation. I am requesting NHTSA to investigate this dealer for violating the federal stop-sale order and endangering consumers by releasing a recalled vehicle without remedy or disclosure.
