Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L Diesel engines. An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.
Dealers will update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 3, 2023. Some owner notification letters were mailed October 31, 2023. Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2014-2019 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines. A high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure may introduce internal debris into the fuel system, potentially resulting in fuel starvation.
Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the HPFP, and inspect and replace, if necessary, additional fuel system components, free of charge. Interim notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed July 21, 2022. Owner notification letters for were mailed for Jeep Grand Cherokee owners starting January 11, 2024. The Active Head Restraint (AHR) deployed without a collision while I was slowing to a traffic signal. My vehicle was travelling approximately 5-7mph and slowing to a traffic signal when the Active Head Rest deployed, launching my head and trunk forward to the steering wheel. The Jeep Service Representative informed me that this is a well-known issue and the NHTSA closed the investigation without ordering a recall. (PE19014, opened 2019) The failure mechanism is reported to be mechanical as the AHR relies on a plastic bracket holding a metal rod that connects to hooks meant to trigger only in a rear-end crash, and that plastic simply fails under prolonged tension over time with no warning signs beforehand.

While driving home from the gym with my daughter in the front passenger seat, we were traveling less than 40 mph under normal driving conditions. Without warning, I heard a very loud pop/bang from inside the vehicle. We had not been in a collision, had not hit anything, and nothing had struck the vehicle. I immediately looked over and saw my daughter crouched down in her seat holding her neck. At first, I could not determine what had happened. I then noticed that the front passenger-side Active Head Restraint (AHR)/headrest had suddenly deployed or come apart and had struck her from behind. There were no warning lights, messages, alerts, or other symptoms before the incident. The deployment occurred suddenly and without any apparent event that should have triggered this safety system. My daughter sustained a neck injury as a result of the unexpected deployment and was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. She was placed in a neck brace and had to wear it for approximately one week. The incident also created a safety risk while the vehicle was in motion. The sudden loud bang and my daughter's immediate reaction occurred without warning while I was driving, and I initially did not know whether something had struck the vehicle or what had happened to her. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer, manufacturer, insurance representative, police, or independent service center. The passenger-side Active Head Restraint remains in its deployed/dislodged condition.

After arriving at the residence, the contact became aware that the front driver's side seat headrest had exploded. The contact’s neck and head were hurt from the impact and from being thrust forward. The contact sought medical attention for whiplash. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed with a deployed headrest. The contact was informed that the headrest needed to be replaced. The dealer suggested replacing both front seat headrests. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.

2/24/26 around 10:45am CST the passenger seat headrest exploded/combusted with a very loud popping noise while driving the car 40 mph on a smooth surface road. The active head restraint deployed September 30, 2025 overnight while my Jeep was parked on my driveway. The restraint has not been repaired and is available for inspection. If this head restraint would have deployed while driving with my wife I believe it would have injured her. I believe there is a defective part in the head restraint. I brought it to the dealer where I purchased the Jeep. I was told there was and extended warranty but it ended Sept. 25, 2024 so my active head restraint is not covered. I was never notified by FCA or the dealer about this extended warranty. There was no warning that addressed this issue. I spoke with numerous Customer Service Specialists about my situation and they said I would have to purchase a replacement head restraint.

On 10 September 2025 I was driving home from work in heavy traffic. I was stopped at a red light when I heard a loud explosion and the headrest on the driver seat slammed into the back of my head hard. I thought I had been rear ended but there was no other car close to me. Luckily the vehicle was not in motion when this happened. When I was able to pull to a safe location I saw that the headrest was split wide open. Contacted dealership who said to contact Chrysler who was contacted but has never followed up with a call back.

The driver's side head rest popped out and hit me in the back of the head, luckily I was not driving at the time, was stopped at a flagger for road work. It hit so hard that I thought the person behind me rear ended me, however when I looked in mirror that vehicle was nowhere near me. I have not had it to a dealer, nor called them yet, was checking first for a recall that maybe I missed. No warning lights at all, no noise ahead of time.
