Recalls and investigations

  1. Engine and engine coolingJun 8, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L Diesel engines. The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and cam shaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall.

An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 3, 2023. Some owner notification letters were mailed October 31, 2023. Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2014-2019 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines. A high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure may introduce internal debris into the fuel system, potentially resulting in fuel starvation.

Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the HPFP, and inspect and replace, if necessary, additional fuel system components, free of charge. Interim notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed July 21, 2022. Owner notification letters for were mailed for Jeep Grand Cherokee owners starting January 11, 2024. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with the 3.0L EcoDiesel engines. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler may crack and allow pre-heated vaporized coolant to enter the EGR system. This mixture may combust inside the intake manifold.

Combustion in the intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EGR cooler, free of charge. Dealers will also inspect and, as necessary, replace the intake manifold. Parts are not currently available. Owners were mailed an interim notification on December 21, 2021. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. The affected vehicles are equipped with radios that have software vulnerabilities that can allow third-party access to certain networked vehicle control systems.

Exploitation of the software vulnerability may result in unauthorized remote modification and control of certain vehicle systems, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify and mail affected owners a USB drive that includes a software update that eliminates the vulnerability, free of charge. Optionally, owners may download the update to their own USB drive from http://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/ or take their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for immediate installation. THE ACTIVE HEAD REST ON THE PASSENGER CARE DEPLOYED WITHOUT WARNING OR COLLISION AS THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED WITH THE ENGINE TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS NEVER INVOLVED IN ANY COLLISIONS OR REPAIR. WENT TO THE LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP THAT HAS A REPAIR CENTER AND I WAS TOLD THAT THIS ITEM IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE MANUFACTURER EXTENDED LIMITED WARRANTY WHICH I PURCHASED AND WILL EXPIRE IN MARCH 2020. MY VEHICLE HAS 45K MILES AND IS A 2015 MODEL YEAR. LOOKING AT FORUMS THE ACTIVE HEAD REST ON SIMILAR VINTAGE VEHICLES ARE HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND ARE INDICATED TO BE A DESIGN DEFECT WHEN A PLASTIC BRACKET FAILS COMPROMISING THE FUNCTION OF THE ACTIVE HEAD REST. CURRENTLY THE HEAD REST REMAINS DEPLOYED AND I AVOID SITTING ANYBODY ON THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE LINK BELOW IS NOT FROM MY VEHICLE BUT THE DEPLOYED HEAD REST ON MY VEHICLE LOOKS THE SAME.

ACTIVE HEADREST RESTRAINT DEPLOYED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. NO REAR COLLISION OR OTHER ACCIDENT OCCURRED. DEALERSHIP INDICATES THE "TABS" BROKE OFF AND THEREFORE CANNOT BE RESET. QUOTED ME $816 TO REPLACE THE HEADREST. SEEMS EXORBITANT. AND SOMETHING THAT, AS A SAFETY COMPONENT, SHOULD BE THE SUBJECT OF A RECALL (VOLUNTARY OR OTHERWISE) TO BE FIXED.*DT CONSUMER STATED VEHICLE HAS BEEN REPAIRED.*JB

GOOD MORNING, I WAS DRIVING ONE DAY WHEN SUDDENLY I WAS STRUCK EXTREMELY HARD ON THE BACK OF MY HEAD. SO HARD THAT I THOUGHT I GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT, ALTHOUGH I DIDN'T I ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. MY HEAD AND NECK WERE HURTING FOR A WHILE, WHEN I PARKED MY VEHICLE I REALIZED THAT MY HEADREST HAD POPPED OUT. NOT SURE WHY THIS HAPPENED BUT WHEN I WENT TO RESEARCH THIS PROBLEM I NOTICED THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT AHR RANDOMLY BREAKING AND DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AND HOW HARD I GOT HIT I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A CAUSE FOR CONCERNS AND AN UNSAFE CONDITION. I TOOK MY CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THE WARRANTY WOULDN'T COVER THIS NOR WAS THEIR ANY RECALL ON MY VEHICLE. I DUG A LITTLE DEEPER INTO THIS MATTER AS I SAW HOW MANY COMPLAINTS THERE WERE AND SAW THAT THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM AND THE FACT THAT THERE IS A HISTORY SHOULD AT LEAST CAUSE AN INVESTIGATION. WITH ALL THAT BEING SAID, THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER AND HAVE A NICE DAY.

ONE MORNING AS I GOT INTO MY JEEP TO DRIVE TO WORK, I NOTICED THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADREST HAD POPPED OPEN, SEEMINGLY OVERNIGHT. I DID NOT WITNESS THIS HAPPENING - I JUST NOTICED THE END RESULT. I HAVE TRIED TO "CLOSE" IT BUT I AM UNABLE TO DO SO.

  7. Seats, Jan 5, 2020

WHILE DRIVING ON A PUBLIC ROADWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH AND TURNING INTO A FUELING STATION, I WAS STRUCK IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD BY THE DRIVER SEAT HEADREST PROPULSION SYSTEM. THE HEADREST IS NOW IN A DEPLOYED POSITION. I AM UNABLE TO COLLAPSE IT BACK. IT CAUSED ME TO HAVE TO STOP OPERATING THE VEHICLE AT A FUEL STATION FOR SAFETY.

  8. Air bags, Seats, Jan 3, 2020

PASSENGER HEADREST SAFETY FEATURE DEPLOYED OVERNIGHT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED INSIDE OUR GARAGE. THE PLASTIC ON THE INSIDE OF THE HEADREST IS BROKEN AND THE HEADREST CAN NOT BE RESET.

  9. Seats, Dec 17, 2019

I WAS DRIVING AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY HEADREST SMACKS ME IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD. AFTER LOOKING AT IT AFTER I PARKED, I FOUND OUT THE HEADREST IS A RESTRAINT SYSTEM THAT DEPLOYED. THE PLASTIC TABS THAT HOLD THE HEADREST TOGETHER WERE BROKEN. SO, AFTER DRIVING BACK HOME, I AM PULLING UP TO MY GARAGE AND THEN THE PASSENGER HEADREST BREAKS TOO.

FRONT PASSENGER HEADREST DEPLOYED AND BURST OPEN ON ITS OWN WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED.

  11. Seats, Nov 25, 2019

YESTERDAY (11/24/2019) WHEN MY ADULT DAUGHTER ENTERED MY 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED, JUST AFTER CLOSING THE DOOR AND FASTENING HER SEAT BELT, THE HEADREST BURST AND HIT HER IN THE BACK OF HER HEAD/NECK. SHE HAD COMPLAINED OF DISCOMFORT AFTER THE INCIDENT, SO WE WILL BE KEEPING AN EYE ON HER TO CONFIRM SHE DIDN'T SUFFER A CONCUSSION. THE CAR WAS NOT MOVING AND NOTHING HAD OCCURRED TO CAUSE THE HEADREST TO REACT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. WHILE DRIVING, THE HEADREST ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE POPPED OPEN. THE CONTACT CALLED TOM O'BRIEN CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM INDIANAPOLIS (4630 E 96TH ST, INDIANAPOLIS, IN 46240, (317) 805-4400) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,781.

  13. Seats, Nov 18, 2019

WHILE PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY, UNOCCUPIED, AND ENGINE NOT RUNNING, THE ACTIVE HEADREST RESTRAINT SYSTEM ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DEPLOYED. THERE WAS NO COLLISION OR CONTACT WITH ANYTHING TO CAUSE DEPLOYMENT. THE MECHANIZE INTERNAL PARTS THE KEEP THE HEADREST TOGETHER BROKE CAUSING DEPLOYMENT AND NOT ALLOWING THE HEADREST TO BE RESET OR PUT BACK IN PLACE. I HAD TO PUT A BUNGIE CORD AROUND THE HEADREST TO HOLD IT BACK IN PLACE SO I CAN DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT THE DEPLOYED HEADREST PUSHING AGAINST THE BACK ON MY HEAD, WHICH IS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. THIS OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 61800 MILES. MY FACTORY EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRED AT 60000. EVEN THOUGHT THE DEALER IS FAMILIAR WITH THIS PROBLEM FCA WILL NOT COVER THIS REPAIR WHICH WAS QUOTED AT $900. I WAS ALSO TOLD THE PARTS ARE BACK ORDERED WITH NO DATE AS WHEN THEY WILL BE AVAILABLE. THIS IS A DEFECTIVE SAFETY PART PROBLEM WHICH FCA SHOULD BE REQUIRED ISSUE A RECALL.*DT*JB

  14. Air bags, Seats, Nov 13, 2019

THE PASSENGER SIDE ACTIVE HEADREST RESTRAINT ON MY 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE DEPLOYED WHILE PARKED IN MY GARAGE UNOCCUPIED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER - THEY CHECKED THE COMPUTER AND HEADREST AND DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT AND A FAILED LOCKING MECHANISM IS WHAT CAUSED IT TO DEPLOY. THE DEALER AGREED TO CONTACT CHRYSLER ON MY BEHALF FOR A RESOLUTION. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT CHRYSLER AGREED TO PAY FOR HALF THE COST OF THE REPAIR - APPROXIMATELY $350. I AGREED TO PAY THE $350 ONLY IF THEY REPLACED BOTH HEADRESTS WHICH THEY DECLINED. I AM CURRENTLY DRIVING MY VEHICLE WITH A DEFECTIVE HEADREST - HOPING THE SECOND HEADREST DOES NOT FAIL ALSO.

MEMORY SEATS NO LONGER WORK, THEREFORE CAUSING MY SEAT TO BE OUT OF WHACK AND I CAN NOT SIT RIGHT. MY ENGINE BEGAN TO MAKE A TICKING NOISE OUT OF NOWHERE, MEANING SOMETHING IS WRONG. ONE HEADLIGHT IS OUT BUT ISN'T AND CAUSES MY BRIGHT TO BE ON AT ALL TIMES. WHEN USING MY LIGHT I NOW CANNOT USE MY ACTUAL BRIGHTS. *PM

  16. Seats, Nov 6, 2019

MY PASSENGER SIDE ACTIVE HEADREST POPPED OPEN ALL OF A SUDDEN WHILE PARKED. LUCKILY, THERE WAS NO ONE SITTING THERE AT THE TIME. I'VE READ STORIES FROM A LOT OF OTHER JEEP AND CHRYSLER OWNERS THAT EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE AND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT TO FORCE A RECALL. AT BEST, THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE FIX WHICH REALLY SHOULD BE THE MANUFACTURER'S RESPONSIBILITY. AT WORST, IT CAN KNOCK SOMEONE OUT WHILE DRIVING AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. PLEASE LOOK INTO IT.

  17. Seats, Oct 25, 2019

THE FRONT SEAT DRIVER SIDE HEADREST HAS PROTRUDED FORWARD. I JUST NOTICED IT YESTERDAY WHEN I DROVE THE JEEP HOME FROM WORK. IT WAS PARKED IN OUR COMPANY PARKING LOT ALL DAY WHILE I WAS AT WORK WHEN THIS HAPPENED. WENT TO SCHICKER AUTOMOTIVE GROUP (JEEP DEALER) IN WASHINGTON MISSOURI. THEY TOLD ME I NEED A WHOLE NEW HEADREST. TOTAL COST, PARTS AND LABOR. $771.00

  18. Seats, Oct 24, 2019

PASSENGER HEADREST COMPLETELY CAME APART. THE BACK IS NOT ATTACHED TO THE FRONT AND YOU SEE ALL OF THE INNER COMPONENTS. NO INCIDENT OR SHOCK TO THE VEHICLE TO CAUSE THIS. ONE DAY IT WAS FINE, NEXT DAY IT WASN'T.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. WHILE THE CONTACT'S WIFE WAS DRIVING 65 MPH, THE FRONTAL DRIVER'S SIDE HEAD REST AIR BAG DEPLOYED WITHOUT WARNING. WHILE DRIVING APPROX 35 MPH, THE PASSENGER SEAT HEADREST SAFETY DEVICE DEPLOYED FOR NO REASON WHILE MY 14 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS SITTING IN THE FRONT SEAT. LUCKILY SHE WAS NOT HURT DURING THE INCIDENT. THE PLASTIC PIECES HOLDING THE PIN IN PLACE FAILED RELEASING THE HEADREST. BECAUSE THE PLASTIC FAILED, THERE IS NO WAY TO RESET THE HEADREST AS THE PIN HOLDS IT IN PLACE. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECTIVE COMPONENT OF THE HEADREST SAFETY SYSTEM.

  22. Seats, Oct 8, 2019

WHILE THE CAR HAS PARKED IN OUR GARAGE WE CAME OUT TO FIND THAT THE ACTIVE HEAD REST SAFETY DEVICE HAD DEPLOYED ON ITS OWN. LOOKS LIKE THE PLASTIC RETAINING PARTS FAILED AS THEIR IS BITS OF PLASTIC ON THE FLOOR. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS NOT A SAFE DESIGN AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. OUR JEEP DEALERSHIP HAS LET US KNOW THAT THIS IN NOT UNDER WARRANTY AND WILL BE OVER $700 TO FIX. WE WILL BE CONTACTING FCA CUSTOMER SERVICE AS IT ISNT RIGHT TO HAVE THE DEALERSHIP BE ON THE HOOK FOR A FAULTY PRODUCT.

ON 10/1/2019 WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK IN MY 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO, THE PASSENGER SEAT HEADREST DEPLOYED FOR NO KNOWN REASON. THIS WAS ON A 2 LANE HIGHWAY WITH TRAFFIC MOVING UP TO 55 MPH. IT SOUNDED LIKE A SHOTGUN BLAST. FORTUNATELY MY WIFE OR OLDER KIDS WEREN'T IN THE SEAT AT THE TIME BECAUSE THEY COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED.

I WAS DROPPING MY SON OFF AT SCHOOL. WHILE I HAD THE CAR IN PARK, THE PASSENGER SEAT HEADREST DEPLOYED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. LUCKILY HE WAS TOO SHORT FOR IT TO HIT HIS HEAD.

  25. Seats, Sep 12, 2019

ACTIVE HEADREST ON DRIVER'S SIDE DEPLOYED WITHOUT WARNING OR CAUSE WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH. HIT ME IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD, STARTLING ME AND CAUSING ME TO SWERVE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC LANE. FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS ONCOMING DURING THAT TIME. PULLED OVER AND SURVEYED THAT THE SHELL OF THE HEADREST WAS DEPLOYED AND ALL PLASTIC PIECES HOLDING COVER TO SHELL WERE SNAPPED INSIDE. COULD NOT RESET INTO NORMAL POSITION.
