Recalls and investigations

  1. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchMay 28, 2020

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2018 Nissan Altima vehicles. If the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, there is an increased likelihood that the secondary hood latch may corrode over time.

Corrosion to the secondary latch may cause it to bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. If the primary latch is inadvertently released again and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a stronger release spring in the hood release lever, a warning label near the secondary hood latch, and an Owner’s Manual addendum card with instructions on how to lubricate and maintain the secondary hood latch mechanism, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 30, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: Recall 16V-029 remains open for any unremedied 2013-2015 Altimas and this recall applies to all vehicles covered by 16V-029 even if those repairs have already been performed.

  2. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationDec 19, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima vehicles manufactured January 3, 2013, to July 29, 2013, 2015-2016 Rogue vehicles manufactured October 14, 2014, to August 12, 2016, and 2016 Maxima vehicles manufactured June 4, 2015, to August 19, 2015. An incorrect Occupant Classification System (OCS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may have been installed in the front passenger seat. The incorrect ECU and seat combination may misclassify the front passenger seat occupant.

If the front passenger seat occupant is misclassified, the air bag may deploy incorrectly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ECU and update the OCS software free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  3. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationApr 26, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.

If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

  4. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchJan 22, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima vehicles manufactured March 6, 2012, to December 31, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

These vehicles were previously included in recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116, however the previous remedy plan may not have been performed consistently to remove the safety risk. To correct this issue, Nissan will re-notify all affected owners and dealers will replace the hood latch with a new one, free of charge. The recall began on February 17, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116.

  5. Air bags, frontalOct 20, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima and Pathfinder vehicles, 2013-2014 Nissan Sentra vehicles, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles, 2014-2015 Infiniti QX60 vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The affected vehicles received an incorrect occupant classification system (OCS) control unit during a repair. These OCS control units may incorrectly classify the front passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.

If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  6. Fuel system, gasolineAug 4, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) notified the agency on July 31, 2015, that they are recalling certain model year 2016 Nissan Maxima vehicles manufactured February 10, 2015, to August 18, 2015. On October 14, 2015, Nissan expanded the recall to cover an additional 41,388 vehicles, including certain model year 2013-2015 Altima 3.5 vehicles equipped with a V6 engine manufactured March 30, 2012, to August 18, 2015 as well as the vehicles covered by the July 31, 2015 notification. In the affected vehicles, due to an improperly installed o-ring that may not have been seated correctly at the time of assembly, fuel may leak during a crash from the area where the fuel sending unit attaches to the fuel tank.

If fuel leaks from between the fuel sending unit and the tank, it may increase the risk of a fire in the event of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a retainer ring between the fuel tank and the fuel sending unit. The recall began on September 28, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  1. Exterior lighting, Dec 19, 2020

THE LOW BEAM DRIVING LIGHTS AREN'T BRIGHT ENOUGH TO SAFELY ILLUMINATE THE ROAD. IT IS NOT DUE TO OLD BULBS, BUT RATHER DUE TO THE DESIGN AND MATERIALS OF THE REFLECTOR SYSTEM SURROUNDING THE BULB WHICH HAS DETERIORATED. HIGH BEAMS WORK FINE. LOW BEAMS MIGHT AS WELL BE OFF AS PEDESTRIANS, PARKED CARS, STOPPED CARS, ARE ALL NOT VISIBLE UNTIL WITHIN 20-30 FEET IN FRONT WHEN DRIVING ON OTHERWISE DIMLY LIT ROADS. I HAVE RUN OVER A SMALL CURB THAT WAS NOT VISIBLE DUE TO THE POOR LIGHTING. I AM CONCERNED I WILL NOT HAVE STOPPING DISTANCE IN RAIN EVEN AT LOW SPEED, SHOULD A PEDESTRIAN SUDDENLY BE VISIBLE IN THE LOW LIGHTING.

  2. Exterior lighting, Structure, Dec 15, 2020

1)EXTREMELY DIM HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY IN MOTION AND STATIONARY. DANGEROUSLY DIM AND HAS STEADILY GOTTEN WORSE OVER 2 YEARS EVEN AFTER LIGHT BULBS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. BOTH HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY ARE ISSUE. 2)HOOD WILL NOT CLOSE AND LATCH PROPERLY AS OF TODAY 12-14-2020 FOLLOWING STATIONARY ROUTINE OPENING OF HOOD. VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. RECALL REPLACEMENT FOR LATCH HAS NOT BEEN PROVIDED BY MAKER AS OF THIS DATE. RECALL WAS IN MAY 2020.

  3. Exterior lighting, Dec 10, 2020

HEADLIGHTS ARE DANGEROUSLY DIM. LAMPS HAVE BEEN REPLACED, HOWEVER THE NISSAN DEALER STATED THE INTERIOR OF THE LAMP HOUSING THAT REFLECTS THE LIGHT BEAM IS DETERIORATED. THERE LITERALLY IS NO LIGHT PROTRUDING FORWARD. CAN NOT SAFELY DRIVE THE CAR AT NIGHT WITHOUT USING THE HIGH BEAMS. THE COST TO FIX THIS DEFECT IS OVER $1,000. THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT FROM THE LOW BEAMS IS LESS THAN DAYLIGHT RUNNING LAMPS. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. THE LIGHTING HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE OVER THE YEARS. THIS IS NOT A LAMP ISSUE OR TYPE OF LAMP, RATHER THE ACTUAL REFLECTIVE HOUSING INTERNALLY THAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE TO REPAIR, THE ENTIRE HOUSING MUST BE REPLACED. THIS SITUATION IS EQUALLY THE SAME FOR BOTH HEADLAMPS. FUNNY HOW THE NISSAN DEALER KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AS THEY HAVE EXPRESSED OTHER CUSTOMERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, YET THERE'S NOT BEEN A RECALL FOR WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE CAR......CLEAR VISIBILITY TO DRIVE AT NIGHT.

  6. Exterior lighting, Nov 27, 2020

THE LOW BEAMS ON THIS VEHICLE ARE SO LOW I HAVE TO USE MY HIGH BEAMS 100% OF THE TIME WHEN IT IS DARK. I DRIVE A MINIMUM OF 50 MILES A DAY JUST TO AND FROM WORK AND DEPENDING ON THE SEASON IT IS DARK BOTH WAYS. THIS IS A DANGER TO MYSELF AND OTHER DRIVERS WHO GET REALLY MAD ( AND DEFINITELY LET ME KNOW IT ). ON COMING DRIVERS FLASH THEIR LIGHTS AT ME AND CARS THAT I FOLLOW EVEN SLOW DOWN SO MUCH THAT I HAVE TO PASS THEM JUST SO THEY CAN TAILGATE ME WITH THEIR HIGH BEAMS ON. IT'S SCARY !! I LIVE IN A VERY RURAL AREA WITH HIGH DEER TRAFFIC AND MINIMAL STREET LIGHTS. WE HAVE TRIED REPLACING LIGHT BULBS SEVERAL TIMES TO NO AVAIL. FROM WHAT I AM READING, LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS ISSUE AS WELL. THE FIX IS NOT CHEAP BUT WE WILL HAVE TO DISH OUT THE MONEY TO DO IT BEFORE I GET PULLED OVER AND TICKETED OR WORSE, GET IN ACCIDENT CAUSING INJURY OR DEATH TO SOMEONE INCLUDING MYSELF.

  7. Exterior lighting, Nov 26, 2020

THE HEADLIGHTS IN THE DIM POSITION DO NOT SUFFICIENTLY PROVIDE ENOUGH LIGHT TO SAFELY DRIVE AT NIGHT WHILE DRIVING.

  8. Exterior lighting, Nov 24, 2020

HEAD LIGHT LOW BEAMS ARE DANGEROUSLY DIM. CAN'T SEE BEYOND 100 FEET. I MUST DRIVE WITH HIGH BEAMS ON OR CAN'T SEE. LIKE HAVING A SMALL FLASHLIGHT FOR HEAD LIGHTS. VERY DANGEROUS EASILY CAN SEE AN ACCIDENT (CRASH) COMING SOON ESPECIALLY IN RAIN AT NIGHT. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2013 ALTIMA. NISSAN HAS NOT RECALLED YET FORD DID IN 2012 FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. SOMONE IS GOING TO DIE. DELALER QUOTED $1200 TO REPLACE ENTIRE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY. THIS DEFINITELY MUST BE RECALLED.

  9. Exterior lighting, Nov 24, 2020

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE EXTREMELY DIM AND PRESENTED A DRIVING HAZARD WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT OR IN LOW LIGHT CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO PETRO NISSAN (6248 US-98, HATTIESBURG, MS 39402, (601) 450-1470) HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 80,000.

  10. Exterior lighting, Nov 24, 2020

LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS ARE TOO DIM TO OPERATE SAFELY AT NIGHT, ESPECIALLY WITH WET ROADS. REPLACEMENT OF LIGHT BULBS DOES NOT IMPROVE LOW-BEAM PERFORMANCE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A FAILURE OF THE LOW-BEAM PROJECTION COATING IN THE HEADLIGHT HOUSING. THE SITUATION IS RAPIDLY GETTING WORSE.

  11. Exterior lighting, Nov 19, 2020

LOW BEAM PERFORMANCE WAS ALWAYS SUB-PAR WHEN CAR WAS NEW. AS THE THE CAR AGES THE LOW BEAM PERFORMANCE IS GETTING WORSE. ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE ON THE INTERNET SAYS THE REFLECTOR WITHIN THE LOW BEAM PROJECTORS DETERIORATES, THUS REDUCING LOW BEAM PERFORMANCE.

  12. Exterior lighting, Nov 19, 2020

THE LOW BEAMS ON MY HEADLIGHTS ARE REALLY DIM AND THE HOUSING UNIT FOR THE BULB IS BURNT OUT NOT ALLOWING THE LIGHT TO PROJECT. I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING WITHOUT THE USE OF MY HIGH BEAMS ON CAUSING A HUGE VISIBILITY SAFETY ISSUE. I WILL NEED TO BUY ALL NEW HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES IN ORDER TO HAVE GOOD VISIBILITY AND TO FIX THE ISSUE. PLEASE SEE THE PHOTO ATTACHED AND A LINK TO YOUTUBE FOR A BETTER EXPLANATION OF THE ISSUE.

  13. Exterior lighting, Nov 18, 2020

THE LIGHTING PROVIDED BY THE HEADLIGHTS ON LOW BEAM ARE WOEFULLY SUB STANDARD AND MAKES IT DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AT NIGHT. RESEARCH INDICATES THIS HAS BEEN WIDELY KNOWN IN 2013-2015 MODELS. THE COST OF REPAIRS IS IN THE $1000 RANGE. SINCE THIS IS A WIDESPREAD ISSUE AND BULB REPLACEMENT DOES NOT CORRECT THE SAFETY HAZARD THIS SHOULD QUALIFY AS A RECALL AND BE FIXED AT NO CHARGE TO THE CONSUMER. THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO,HAPPEN. MY WIFE REFUSES TO DRIVE THIS CAR AT NIGHT DUE TO THE POOR VISIBILITY.

REAR LOWER CONTROL A ARM THAT HOLDS SPRING ROTTED AT WELDS AND BROKE MADE TIRE DRAG DOWN HIGHWAY AT 65MPH ALMOST CRASHED BECAUSE OF THIS .COST ME 150 TOW PLUS THE PART WAS FEW HUNDRED TOO.🙁. LIGHTS SUCK SO BAD CAN'T SEE AT NIGHT. 30 FEET IF THAT, I HAVE REPLACED BULBS (40)$ AND STILL SUCK DEFINITELY SOMETHING NOT RIGHT ..THEY HAVE BEEN GETTING WORSE MONTH BY MONTH. WHEN I GOT THE CAR AT 30 K MILES IT WAS THE BEST CAR I'VE EVER OWNED. 11/09/2020

  16. Exterior lighting, Nov 8, 2020

THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS HAVE GOTTEN SO DIM WE CANT EVEN DRIVE AT NIGHT WITH OUT HIGH BEAMS THIS I FEEL IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND WE ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES HAVING THIS PROBLEM WITH THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL FROM 2013 TO 2015 NISSAN SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE THEM AS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT STARTED ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO

  17. Exterior lighting, Visibility/wiper, Nov 7, 2020

THE LOW BEAMS FOR MY 2013 ALTIMA SL HAVE BECOME TOO DIM FOR ME TO SEE AT NIGHT. I HAVE HAD TO START USING THE HIGH BEAMS TO SEE AT NIGHT WHICH COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR OTHER DRIVERS, BUT IF I DIDN'T USE THEM I COULD CRASH DUE TO POOR VISIBILITY.

  18. Exterior lighting, Nov 6, 2020

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS FAILED TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE ILLUMINATION WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. AFTER RESEARCHING THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT BECAME AWARE THAT THE INTERIOR MATERIAL HEADLIGHT HOUSING DETERIORATED OVER TIME AND THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE HEADLIGHTS WERE NOR REPLACED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WERE MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 137,000.

  19. Exterior lighting, Nov 4, 2020

LOW BEAM LIGHTS ARE HORRIBLE YOU CANNOT SEE 1FT IN FRONT OF YOU THIS IS A MAJOR SAFTEY ISSUE AND SOMEONE IS GOING END UP GETTING IN A MAJOR WRECK IF THIS ISSUE IS NOT RECALLED

  20. Exterior lighting, Nov 1, 2020

THE HEADLIGHT SLOWLY LOST THEIR ABILITY TO REFLECT LIGHT FROM THE BULB. THEY STARTED BRIGHT WHEN I OWNED THE CAR BUT SLOWLY BECAME MORE DIM AS TIME WENT ON. I REALIZE THAT HALOGEN BULBS WILL DO THAT, BUT THIS WASN'T THE RESULT OF THE BULB. THE REFLECTIVE COATING INSIDE OF THE LOW BEAM PROJECTOR HAD STARTED TO COME OFF AND THE PROJECTOR WAS NOT PROJECTING LIGHT AS IT SHOULD. IT BECAME SO DIM THAT I COULD BARELY SEE AT NIGHT, IF THE ROADS WERE NOT LIT UP. IT WASN'T MUCH OF A PROBLEM IF I WAS DRIVING THROUGH A LIGHTED CITY, BUT IF I WAS ON BACK COUNTRY ROADS, I COULDN'T SEE MORE THAN FORTY FEET AHEAD. I HAVE REPLACED BOTH HOUSINGS AND I WAS ABLE TO SEE MUCH FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD. I TRIED PUTTING A NEW BULB IN THE OLD HOUSING, BUT IT STILL FAILED TO REFLECT THE LIGHT. I HAVE PICTURES OF OUTSIDE ONE OF THE HEADLIGHTS AND A PICTURE OF INSIDE THE REFLECTOR. IT SHOWS WHERE THE REFLECTIVE COATING WAS COMING OFF. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH NISSAN ALTIMAS THAT HAVE BOTH HALOGEN AND XENON HEADLIGHTS. I ATTACHED THE PICTURES TO MY COMPLAINT. THIS IS NOT A ONE TIME INCIDENT, BUT RATHER AN ONGOING ISSUE THAT PROGRESSIVE GOT WORSE UNTIL THE FAULTY PARTS WERE REPLACED.

  21. Exterior lighting, Visibility/wiper, Oct 30, 2020

HEADLIGHTS EXTREMELY DIM CAUSING NIGHT DRIVING HAZARD. ISSUE IS DUE TO DEGRADATION OF REFLECTOR IN HEADLIGHT HOUSING. I HAD TO REPLACE BOTH HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES TO RESOLVE SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE CAR. THIS IS APPARENTLY A PRONOUNCED PROBLEM WITH NISSAN ALTIMAS PER NISSAN ONLINE FORUMS. PHOTO SHOWS REPLACEMENT HEADLIGHT ON LEFT AND THE ORIGINAL DEFECTIVE HEADLIGHT REFLECTOR ON THE RIGHT.

  22. Exterior lighting, Oct 15, 2020

LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS ARE TOO DIM TO SAFELY SEE AT NIGHT.

  23. Exterior lighting, Oct 15, 2020

THE HEADLIGHT PROJECTOR HOUSING HAS "FAILED" AFTER 6-7 YEARS. THE REFLECTIVE COATING IN THE PROJECTOR HOUSING NO LONGER WORKS PROPERLY, WITH ABSOLUTELY NO DAMAGE TO THEM. EVEN WITH BRAND NEW HEADLIGHT (LOWLIGHT) LED BULBS PUSHING 10,000 LUMENS, THE HEADLIGHTS BARELY PROJECT 30-50 FEET IN FRONT OF THE CAR, AND DOES NOT ALLOW FOR PROPER LIGHTING AT NIGHT. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD AND NISSAN NEEDS TO SET A RECALL FOR THIS ON ALL 2013-2015 NISSAN ALTIMA(S). MANY PEOPLE ONLINE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS, AND NISSAN'S RESPONSE IS TO CHARGE PEOPLE UPWARDS OF $1000 TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHTS COMPLETELY. THIS NEEDS TO BE FORCED AS A RECALL, PLEASE!

  24. Exterior lighting, Oct 12, 2020

MY HEADLIGHTS ARE SO DIM I AM UNABLE TO DRIVE MY CAR AT NIGHT FOR FEAR OF GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT. I'VE RESEARCHED AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH 2013-2015 NISSANS HOWEVER NISSAN HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM WHICH IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT WITH MY HIGH BEAMS TO BE ABLE TO SEE WHICH PUTS OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD AT RISK. AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO CORRECT AN ISSUE THAT STEMS FROM A DEFECTIVE/POOR QUALITY PART WITHIN THE HEADLAMPS.

  25. Exterior lighting, Oct 11, 2020

THE DIM LIGHTS ARE SO DIM I CAN BARELY SEE AT NIGHT. I HAVE TO USE THE BRIGHT LIGHTS TO SEE., ESPECIALLY WHEN PASSING ANOTHER CAR. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. I'VE SPENT A TOTAL OF $410 ON BULBS RECOMMENDED BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND THEY ARE STILL AWFUL. ALSO ONE SET WAS THE HIGHEST LUMENS OF LED LIGHTS. PLEASE RE ALL THESE LIGHTS BECAUSE THIS IS SO DANGEROUS TO OWNERS AS WELL AS THE DRIVERS WE MEET ON THE ROADS AT NIGHT. I'VE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS SINCE 12/2019. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THESE LIGHT COMPLAINTS.
