Recalls and investigations

  1. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchMay 28, 2020

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2018 Nissan Altima vehicles. If the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, there is an increased likelihood that the secondary hood latch may corrode over time.

Corrosion to the secondary latch may cause it to bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. If the primary latch is inadvertently released again and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a stronger release spring in the hood release lever, a warning label near the secondary hood latch, and an Owner’s Manual addendum card with instructions on how to lubricate and maintain the secondary hood latch mechanism, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 30, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: Recall 16V-029 remains open for any unremedied 2013-2015 Altimas and this recall applies to all vehicles covered by 16V-029 even if those repairs have already been performed.

  2. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationDec 19, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima vehicles manufactured January 3, 2013, to July 29, 2013, 2015-2016 Rogue vehicles manufactured October 14, 2014, to August 12, 2016, and 2016 Maxima vehicles manufactured June 4, 2015, to August 19, 2015. An incorrect Occupant Classification System (OCS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may have been installed in the front passenger seat. The incorrect ECU and seat combination may misclassify the front passenger seat occupant.

If the front passenger seat occupant is misclassified, the air bag may deploy incorrectly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ECU and update the OCS software free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  3. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationApr 26, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.

If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

  4. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchJan 22, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima vehicles manufactured March 6, 2012, to December 31, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

These vehicles were previously included in recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116, however the previous remedy plan may not have been performed consistently to remove the safety risk. To correct this issue, Nissan will re-notify all affected owners and dealers will replace the hood latch with a new one, free of charge. The recall began on February 17, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116.

  5. Air bags, frontalOct 20, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima and Pathfinder vehicles, 2013-2014 Nissan Sentra vehicles, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles, 2014-2015 Infiniti QX60 vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The affected vehicles received an incorrect occupant classification system (OCS) control unit during a repair. These OCS control units may incorrectly classify the front passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.

If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  6. Fuel system, gasolineAug 4, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) notified the agency on July 31, 2015, that they are recalling certain model year 2016 Nissan Maxima vehicles manufactured February 10, 2015, to August 18, 2015. On October 14, 2015, Nissan expanded the recall to cover an additional 41,388 vehicles, including certain model year 2013-2015 Altima 3.5 vehicles equipped with a V6 engine manufactured March 30, 2012, to August 18, 2015 as well as the vehicles covered by the July 31, 2015 notification. In the affected vehicles, due to an improperly installed o-ring that may not have been seated correctly at the time of assembly, fuel may leak during a crash from the area where the fuel sending unit attaches to the fuel tank.

If fuel leaks from between the fuel sending unit and the tank, it may increase the risk of a fire in the event of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a retainer ring between the fuel tank and the fuel sending unit. The recall began on September 28, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima vehicles manufactured March 1, 2013, to December 31, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will be instructed to modify the bend angle of the hood actuation lever to eliminate potential interference with the hood inner panel. In addition, dealers will clean and lubricate the latch joint as needed. If significant corrosion is observed, the latch assembly will be replaced. This repairs will be performed free of charge. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT OVER INTO THE NEXT GEAR. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED IN SEPTEMBER OF 2016 AS PART OF AN UNKNOWN RECALL REPAIR THAT WAS PERFORMED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AT GRIFFIN NISSAN (1780 E BROAD AVE, ROCKINGHAM, NC 28379, (910) 997-5516). 7. Suspension, Wheels, Other or unspecified, Aug 20, 2019

THE REAR SUSPENSION ON OUR VEHICLE DETACHED UNEXPECTEDLY AND WITHOUT WARNING WHILE WE WERE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT ON A CITY STREET. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS INJURED. ONCE THE VEHICLE NO LONGER IN MOTION IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE REAR CONTROL ARM / REAR SUSPENSION HAD DETACHED FROM EXCESSIVE RUSTED. THE VEHICLE IS A 2013 WITH NO OUTER BODY RUST. IT SEEMS LIKE THIS COULD BE A DEFECT AS WELL AS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE.

  8. Suspension, Aug 20, 2019

I WAS JUST GETTING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR. I WAS DOING ABOUT 35MPH AND RAPIDLY INCREASING TO HIGHWAY SPEED. THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY AND I HAD ALL I COULD DO TO PULL OFF TO THE SHOULDER. HAD THIS HAPPENED A MINUTE LATER WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, I SERIOUSLY BELIEVE I WOULD NOT HAVE SURVIVED. QUITE FRANKLY I DOUBT I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO AVOID A CRASH OR ROLLOVER. AAA TOWED THE CAR TO MY NISSAN DEALERSHIP. THEY SAID THE DRIVER SIDE REAR CONTROL ARM SNAPPED IN HALF AT THE WELDS AND BROKE FREE. THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM WAS ALSO SEVERELY DAMAGED WITH CRACKS AT THE WELDS. WHILE I WAS TAKEN ABACK BY THE SEVERITY OF THE PROBLEM THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS TOTALLY UNCONCERNED SAYING THEY HAVE HAD TO REPLACE A NUMBER OF THESE. THE CAR HAD JUST BEEN INSPECTED BY THE DEALER WEEKS BEFORE. IT HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. IT IS GARAGE KEPT AND WELL MAINTAINED. I FILED AN OFFICIAL COMPLAINT WITH NISSAN ON AUGUST 19, 2019.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO HAVE THE REAR SHOCKS REPLACED. LATER, THE SHOCKS MADE AN ABNORMAL RATTLING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN BACK TO THE MECHANIC BECAUSE THE NOISE RECURRED. THE MECHANIC INSTALLED NEW REAR SHOCKS, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,603.*JB

  14. Exterior lighting, Aug 11, 2019

LOW BEAM LIGHTS ARE EXTREMELY DIM AND MAKE DRIVING AT NIGHT WITHOUT HIGH BEAMS AND FOG LIGHTS VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY IN RAIN OR WET ROAD CONDITIONS. CANNOT SEE CURBS FOR TRAFFIC ISLANDS, CANNOT SEE USUAL ROAD SIGNS, CANNOT SEE SIGNS OVERHEAD CLEARLY. HIGH BEAMS ARE ANNOYING AND RISKY TO ONCOMING TRAFFIC.

  15. Suspension, Aug 10, 2019

MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING IN A PARKING LOT AT ABOUT 5-10 MPH, AND WENT THROUGH A POTHOLE. HE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND FELT THE CAR DIP. HE LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND SAW THAT IT WAS DETACHED FROM THE FRAME AND THE REAR WHEEL WAS AT AN ANGLE. HE TOOK IT TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS INSPECTED AND REPAIRED FOR APPROXIMATELY $1300. THE REAR CONTROL ARM HAD BROKEN COMPLETELY. I CHECKED FOR RECALLS AND FOUND THERE WERE NONE, BUT I ALSO FOUND THERE WERE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEBSITE FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE FOR THE REAR CONTROL ARM BREAKING SUDDENLY, WHICH SIGNIFIES TO ME THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE CONTROL ARMS IN THIS MODEL CAR.

  16. Exterior lighting, Aug 9, 2019

HEADLIGHT LOW BEAM IS GETTING DIMMER. REPLACED BULBS AND CHECKED GROUNDING STILL DIM. PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT IN THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY. UNSAFE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT. HIGH BEAMS WORK WELL.

TAKATA RECALL (FOR ONE PROBLEM) AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON - TOOK IN AND THEY SAID THE SWITCH UNDER PASSENGER SEAT HAD BECOME DISCONNECTED - FIXED BY NISSAN DEALERSHIP WITHIN TWO DAYS, AIRBAG LIGHT BACK ON - TOOK IN AND THEY WERE GETTING CODES FOR DRIVER SEAT AIRBAG - NISSAN RECOMMENDED REPLACING AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC UNIT. WITHIN ANOTHER TWO DAYS OF THIS REPAIR, THE AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC UNIT GIVING SAME CODE. NOW, RECOMMENDING REPLACING DRIVER SEAT AIRBAG. DEALERSHIP INDICATES THAT WHILE THESE ERROR CODES ARE FIRING, THE AIRBAG SYSTEM WOULD NOT GO OFF IN AN ACCIDENT.

  19. Air bags, Aug 7, 2019

THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE. PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA IN APRIL. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT TURNS ON WHEN PASSENGERS SIT IN THE SEAT. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF THE PURCHASE MEANING THE LIGHT SIGNALS AND NOTIFIES THE DRIVER THAT THE AIR BAG IS NOT ACTIVE OR ENGAGED. THIS DENOTES THAT AN AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY WITH A PASSENGER IN THE SEAT IF AN ACCIDENT WERE TO OCCUR. EACH TIME THIS LIGHT HAS COME ON I HAVE SET UP AN APPTMENT WITH MYDEALER TO HAVE THE ISSUE FIXED. THE DIAGNOSTICS CHECK DOES NOT SHOW AN ERROR AND IS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THE SENSORS HAVE BEEN RESET EACH TIME, BUT DOES NOT FIX THE ISSUE. MULTIPLE APPOINTMENTS WERE MADE TO CORRECT THE ISSUE, BUT NONE HAVE RECTIFIED THE SITUATION. I HAVE ASKED FOR THE CAR TO BE REPLACED NUMEROUS TIMES, OR CORRECT THE ISSUE. NONE OF WHICH HAS BEEN FULFILLED. THE REQUEST FOR A REPLACEMENT HAS BEEN SIDE TRACKED BY BRINGING THE CAR IN FOR ANOTHER LOOK TO FIND THE PROBLEM. AT THIS POINT MY WINDOW OF TIME FOR A REPLACEMENT HAS PASSED DUE TO TRYING TO FIND A DIAGNOSTICS ERROR CODE. A CLAIM WAS FILED WITH NISSAN CORPORATE CONSUMER AFFAIRS, BUT NO UPDATE OR PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN OVER TWO WEEKS. AS OF TODAY THE 11TH DAY SINCE MY LAST REPORTED ISSUE, THE CLAIM ASSOCIATE IS JUST NOW STARTING TO LOOK INTO THIS. THE CLAIM WAS CLOSED WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE STATING I COULD NOT BE REACHED, BUT NO PHONE CALL OR MESSAGE WAS MISSED OR LEFT FROM NISSAN CORPORATE. I HAVE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TOMES EACH DAY LOOKING FOR AN UPDATE OR RESOLUTION AND CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE PROMPTLY CALLED CONSUMER AFFAIRS BACK DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF THIS SAFETY ISSUE. AT THIS POINT NO ONE IS ABLE TO GIVE ME ANY INDICATION OF NEXT STEPS.[XXX]. THANKS. 2013 ALTIMA WITH 86,000 MILES. THE LOWER REAR PASSENGER CONTROL ARM CRACKED AND BROKE OFF THE MOUNT. THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ~30MPH. THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT. THE REAR END OF THE CAR SWERVED PRETTY SEVERELY DURING THE INCIDENT. I HAD THREE KIDS IN THE BACK SPEED SO THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. IF THIS HAPPENED AT HIGHER HIGHWAY SPEEDS IT'S QUITE A DANGEROUS SITUATION. I WAS LUCKY THIS HAPPENED AT SLOW SPEEDS AS THIS IS A MOSTLY HIGHWAY CAR.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO COAST OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THERE WAS A LOT OF ON COMING CARS THAT HAD TO BRAKE ABRUPTLY AS TO NOT REAR END MY CAR. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF FREEWAY TO CHECK AND NOTICED THE BACK DRIVER TIRE LOOKED TO BE NO LONGER ATTACHED. AFTER GETTING MY NISSAN BACK TO THE TOWN I LIVE IN AND TO A REPAIR SHOP THEY INFORMED ME IT WAS A BREAK IN MY CONTROL ARM AND THAT IT APPERED IT HAD "RUSTED OFF" THEY SHOWED ME THE OTHER SIDE OF VEHICLE AND IT WAS ALSO ABOUT TO SNAP DUE TO BEING RUSTED.
