Recalls and investigations

  1. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchMay 28, 2020

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2018 Nissan Altima vehicles. If the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, there is an increased likelihood that the secondary hood latch may corrode over time.

Corrosion to the secondary latch may cause it to bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. If the primary latch is inadvertently released again and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a stronger release spring in the hood release lever, a warning label near the secondary hood latch, and an Owner’s Manual addendum card with instructions on how to lubricate and maintain the secondary hood latch mechanism, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 30, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: Recall 16V-029 remains open for any unremedied 2013-2015 Altimas and this recall applies to all vehicles covered by 16V-029 even if those repairs have already been performed.

  2. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationDec 19, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima vehicles manufactured January 3, 2013, to July 29, 2013, 2015-2016 Rogue vehicles manufactured October 14, 2014, to August 12, 2016, and 2016 Maxima vehicles manufactured June 4, 2015, to August 19, 2015. An incorrect Occupant Classification System (OCS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may have been installed in the front passenger seat. The incorrect ECU and seat combination may misclassify the front passenger seat occupant.

If the front passenger seat occupant is misclassified, the air bag may deploy incorrectly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ECU and update the OCS software free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  3. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationApr 26, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.

If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

  4. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchJan 22, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima vehicles manufactured March 6, 2012, to December 31, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

These vehicles were previously included in recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116, however the previous remedy plan may not have been performed consistently to remove the safety risk. To correct this issue, Nissan will re-notify all affected owners and dealers will replace the hood latch with a new one, free of charge. The recall began on February 17, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116.

  5. Air bags, frontalOct 20, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima and Pathfinder vehicles, 2013-2014 Nissan Sentra vehicles, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles, 2014-2015 Infiniti QX60 vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The affected vehicles received an incorrect occupant classification system (OCS) control unit during a repair. These OCS control units may incorrectly classify the front passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.

If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  6. Fuel system, gasolineAug 4, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) notified the agency on July 31, 2015, that they are recalling certain model year 2016 Nissan Maxima vehicles manufactured February 10, 2015, to August 18, 2015. On October 14, 2015, Nissan expanded the recall to cover an additional 41,388 vehicles, including certain model year 2013-2015 Altima 3.5 vehicles equipped with a V6 engine manufactured March 30, 2012, to August 18, 2015 as well as the vehicles covered by the July 31, 2015 notification. In the affected vehicles, due to an improperly installed o-ring that may not have been seated correctly at the time of assembly, fuel may leak during a crash from the area where the fuel sending unit attaches to the fuel tank.

If fuel leaks from between the fuel sending unit and the tank, it may increase the risk of a fire in the event of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a retainer ring between the fuel tank and the fuel sending unit. The recall began on September 28, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  7. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchFeb 27, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima vehicles manufactured March 1, 2013, to December 31, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will be instructed to modify the bend angle of the hood actuation lever to eliminate potential interference with the hood inner panel. In addition, dealers will clean and lubricate the latch joint as needed. If significant corrosion is observed, the latch assembly will be replaced. This repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 31, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 14V-565.

Nissan North America is recalling certain model year 2013 Altima vehicles manufactured March 21, 2012, through March 26, 2013. The spare tires may have been significantly over- or under-inflated.

Tires that are significantly over- or under-inflated may fail without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and adjust the spare tire pressure, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 29, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

Nissan is recalling certain model year 2013 Altima, LEAF, Pathfinder, Sentra, and Infiniti JX35 vehicles. Sensors within the passenger Occupant Detection System (ODS) may have been manufactured out of specification. This may cause the system to malfunction and permanently suppress the passenger airbag.

If the vehicle is involved in a crash necessitating airbag deployment and the passenger airbag is suppressed, there may be an increased risk of personal injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ODS sensors and replace them as neccessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 6, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.

I HAVE 31,00 MILES ON MY 2013 ALTIMA WHICH I PURCHASED ABOUT THREE-AND-A-HALF YEARS AGO. I WAS IN MY CAR, AND I TRIED TO GET OUT. I PULLED ON THE DOOR HANDLE AND THE DOOR WOULDN'T HAPPEN. I HAD TO LEAVE MY CAR RUNNING IN MY GARAGE AND OPEN THE WINDOW TO GET OUT OF THE CAR. THIS WOULD BE DANGEROUS IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. THIS PROBLEM CAN RESULT IN DEATH. IF SOMEONE IS IN AN ACCIDENT AND THEIR WINDOW WON'T ROLL DOWN, THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE CAR, AND COULD GET SEVERELY INJURED OR KILLED BY BEING TRAPPED IN THE CAR.

  2. Power train, Jan 5, 2017

I HAVE A NISSAN ALTIMA S 2013 AND I FINANCED IT ZERO METER IN SEPT 2013 . YESTERNIGHT MY CAR DIED/SHUTDOWN WHILE TRYING TO ACCELERATE, AFTER STOPPING AT THE STOP LIGHT. I HAD NO CLUE WHAT HAPPENED AT MY CAR. I WAS IN FULL STOP AT THE MOMENT AND WAS TRYING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN. THERE WAS NO WARNING AND I JUST HAD A COLD CAR ALL OF A SUDDEN. I COULD NOT MOVE MY CAR, THE CAR SHUTS ALL ELECTRICAL POWER. I TRIED TO RESTART MY CAR, AND IT DID, BUT WHEN PUT IT IN DRIVE AND TRIED TO ACCELERATE THE CAR WOULD POWER DOWN AGAIN. I TURNED MY HAZARD LIGHTS ON AND CALL THE TOW COMPANY AS I WAS NOT FAR FROM MY HOME. UNFORTUNATELY MY CAR HAS 66K MILES WHILE ITS ONLY 3YRS AND 5 MONTHS OLD. MY WARRANTY EXPIRED AFTER DRIVING MY CAR FOR MORE THAN 60K (ONLY 6K MILES OVER). I SUPPOSE THE MAIN ISSUE IS THAT, THERE IS NO WARNING SIGN. THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED AND PUT ME IN DANGER AND OTHER DRIVERS AROUND ME. I LOST MY CONFIDENCE ON MY CAR BECAUSE THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM POWERED OFF AND IT CAN STOPPED ANYWHERE. THIS IS A ONGOING PROBLEM WITH NISSAN CVT TRANSMISSION. THEY MUST NEED TO RECALL ALL THE NISSAN ALTIMA WHICH HAVE CVT TRANSMISSION AND CORRECT THE PROBLEM, AND FOR ME I NEED A RELIABLE CAR NOT THIS PIECE OF JUNK, (AMERICAN CAR RUNS MORE EFFICIENTLY THAN NISSAN, A JAPANESE PIECE OF JUNK) "NO MORE NISSAN FOR ME". I TOOK MY CAR TO THE CREST NISSAN FRISCO, TX. LETS SEE WHAT THEY SAY??? *TR

  3. Structure, Jan 5, 2017

LAST WEEK MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING HER 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MILES HOURS WHEN THE HOOD SUDDENLY FLEW UP AND CRASHED INTO THE WINDSHIELD. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC AROUND AND SHE WAS ABLE TO CLOSE THE HOOD BACK DOWN AND RETURN THE SHORT DISTANCE TO HER HOME. WHEN I INSPECTED THE VEHICLE THE NEXT DAY I DISCOVERED THAT THE SECONDARY HOOD LATCH DID NOT WORK. UPON INVESTIGATION I DISCOVERED THAT NISSAN HAD RECALLS ON THIS MODEL FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE. I CONTACTED THE NHTSA AND REPORTED THE ISSUE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL REPAIR HAD NOT BEEN DONE AS PER THEIR RECORDS. I THEN CONTACTED NISSAN TO INFORM THEM OF THE ISSUE AND THEY SAID THAT THE RECALL REPAIRS HAD ACTUALLY BEEN COMPLETED EARLIER THIS YEAR BY A NISSAN DEALER IN FLORIDA (WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM A CAR LOT IN FLORIDA IN OCTOBER OF 2016). AFTER A DISCUSSION WITH NISSAN CUSTOMER RELATIONS THEY TOWED THE VEHICLE TO ONE OF THEIR LOCAL DEALERS FOR INSPECTION (12/30/16). THEIR INVESTIGATION FOUND THAT THE REPLACED SECONDARY LATCH HAD FAILED THEREFORE ALLOWING THE HOOD TO FLY OPEN. I AM DEEPLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE. IF THIS HAD BEEN IN TRAFFIC, AT A HIGHER RATE OF SPEED OR OTHER CONDITIONS SERIOUS INJURIES WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE. HOW DO I KNOW THAT WHATEVER NEW REPAIRS THAT ARE DONE WILL SOLVE THIS SERIOUS ISSUE? *TR

  5. Power train, Electronic stability control (ESC), Jan 2, 2017, crash

TO WHOM THIS MAY CONCERN, I OWN A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA 4 CYLINDER WITH ROUGHLY 81000 MILES ON IT. ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO I WAS DRIVING AND THE CAR KEPT STALLING OUT WHEN I WOULD COME TO A STOP LIGHT, BUT I WAS ABLE TO RESTART AND MOVE ON. HOWEVER, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGH WAY IT COMPLETELY SHUT OFF ON ME AND DIDN'T RESTART. THANKFULLY THE TRUCK BEHIND ME HAD ENOUGH ROOM TO SWERVE TO AVOID HITTING ME. ME AND MY CAR WOULD HAVE BEEN TOTALED. I RECEIVED NO WARNING LIGHTS BEFORE THIS ISSUE, IT HAPPENED OUT OF NO WHERE. I RECEIVED A DIAGNOSIS OF "BAD TRANSMISSION" AND WAS GIVEN AN ESTIMATE OF $4200+ TAX. I WAS TOLD THAT SINCE MY EXTENDED WARRANTY RAN OUT THAT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PAYMENT IN TOTAL. I DID MY RESEARCH ON THIS PROBLEM AND IT SEEMS THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AS I AM. I AM BEYOND DISAPPOINTED IN NISSAN AND THEIR INABILITY TO WARN CUSTOMERS ABOUT SUCH A DANGEROUS MALFUNCTION IN THEIR CARS. THIS IS INCREDIBLY UNSAFE AND NEEDS SOME TYPE OF INVESTIGATION OR RECALL DONE ON THE TRANSMISSION. GOD FORBID ANYONE HAS THIS ISSUE AND IT COSTS THEIR LIFE. SINCERELY, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

MY CAR HAS 97,500 MILES ON IT EQUIPPED WITH A CVT TRANSMISSION. NISSAN IN THE PAST HAS HAD ISSUES WITH THESE TRANSMISSIONS AND EXTENDED TRANSMISSION WARRANTY TO 120K MILES IN 08-2010 MODELS. AFTER DOING RESEARCH CAR.COM FOUND 2013-14 ALTIMAS AND ROGUES HAVE HAD SAME ISSUE. 2 DAYS PRIOR BEFORE GETTING MY CAR TO DEALER TO HAVE TRANSMISSION CHECKED OUT, I FIRST NOTICED MY RPMS REVVING UP AND DOWN WHILE ON CRUISE CONTROL. FOLLOWING WORKDAY I WAS AT A STOP LIGHT. LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND CARS APPROACHING FAST BEHIND ME TOOK MY VEHICLE 2,000 RPMS TO MOVE FROM STOP LIGHT ALMOST GETTING REARENDED, I WAS ONLY 1,100 MILES OVER MY PAID EXTENDED WARRANTY COMMUNICATED WITH NISSAN ABOUT THE ISSUES WITH THE CVT TRANSMISSION. LONG STORY SHORT THEY WONT BACK UP THIS FAULTY TRANSMISSION AND NOW I HAVE TO PAY $3,200.00 FOR MY TRANSMISSION TO BE FIXED HTTP://WWW.CARCOMPLAINTS.COM/NISSAN/ALTIMA/2013/TRANSMISSION/ HTTPS://WWW.CARS.COM/ARTICLES/2013-2016-NISSAN-ALTIMA-ROGUE-TRANSMISSION-ISSUE-1420683183828/ HTTP://WWW.NISSANASSIST.COM/PROGRAMDETAILS.PHP?MENU=2 THE ABOVE RESEARCH SHOW THEY HAVE ISSUES AND AT SOME POINT SOMEONE CAN BE INJURED OR KILLED OR LIKE ME HAVING TO FORK OVER EXCESSIVE CASH FOR A TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT NISSAN NEEDS TO STEP UP AND WARRANTY THEIR DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSIONS. *TR

CORPORATIONS REFUSED TO KEEP THERE PROMISES ON THERE PRODUCT AND SAID THEY WILL NOT PAY FOR IT. HOWEVER IT WAS UNDER THERE RECALL.

THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS ARE ENTIRELY INADEQUATE TO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT LIGHTING INTENSITY AND DISTANCE. THE LIGHTS BARELY ILLUMINATE ABOUT 2 CAR LENGTHS AHEAD, WHICH IS TOO SHORT A DISTANCE AT SPEEDS ABOVE 25-30MPH, MAKING HIGHWAY TRAVEL AT NIGHT VERY DANGEROUS. OBJECTS IN THE PATH OF TRAVEL AND ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD ARE NOT VISIBLE IN TIME TO SAFELY RESPOND. STREET SIGNS AND TURNS ARE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY IF THEY ARE NOT NEAR STREET LIGHTS. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN PRESENT SINCE BUYING THE CAR. CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THERE IS NO SOLUTION FOR IT.

I JUST EXITED HIGHWAY 580 TURNING LEFT ON HIGHWAY 84 STOPLIGHT WHEN MY CAR DIED/SHUTDOWN WHILE TRYING TO ACCELERATE. THIS HAPPENED FOR AT LEAST FOUR TIMES. I TURNED MY HAZARD LIGHTS ON FEARING THAT THE CARS EXITING THE FREEWAY WOULD HIT ME CONSIDERING WE HAD THE GREEN. I DID NOT WANT TO GET OUT OF MY CAR BECAUSE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE LANE AND FEARED THAT THE ON COMING DRIVERS WILL NOT SEE ME. THIS HAPPENED AROUND 5:10PM AND WE HAVE A LIGHT SHOWER. I FINALLY GOT MY CAR TO MOVE WHEN I RESTARTED MY CAR AND PUT THE GEAR ON SPORTS MODE OR D2 INSTEAD OF DRIVE. THE CAR MOVED WITHOUT HESITATION AND WHILE I WAS HOPING TO SEE ANY ISSUE OR WARNING ON THE DASHBOARD I FOUND NOTHING. AS IF THERE NO ISSUE AND COULD NOT REPLICATE THE ISSUE. I CONTACTED NISSAN DEALER TO MAKE AND APPOINTMENT, AND GOT ME A SLOTTED THE NEXT DAY. THE FINAL DIAGNOSIS IS THAT MY CAR NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION. UNFORTUNATELY MY CAR HAS 79K MILES WHILE ITS ONLY 4YRS OLD. THEY TOLD ME THAT MY CAR IS DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT THE WHOLE ORDEAL WILL COST ME $3500. MY WARRANTY EXPIRED AFTER DRIVING MY CAR FOR MORE THAN 60K. THE MAIN ISSUE I SUPPOSE THE MAIN ISSUE IS THAT, THERE IS NO WARNING OR TELL TELL SIGN. THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED AND PUT ME IN DANGER AND OTHER DRIVERS AROUND ME. I LOST TOTAL CONTROL OF MY CAR BECAUSE THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM POWERED OFF.

  19. Air bags, Nov 22, 2016

THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG ACTIVATION MECHANISM IN SOME OF 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY. NISSAN ALREADY HAD TWO RECALLS ON IT BUT THEY NEVER ABLE TO FIX IT. EVEN IF SOMEONE IS SITTING ON PASSENGER SIDE, THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD IS ACTIVATED RANDOMLY, THAT MEANS AIRBAG WILL NOT OPEN IN CASE OF CRASH. IT IS A VERY SERIOUS FLAW. IN THE RECENT RECALL THEY SIMPLY MADE A S/W UPDATE TO FLIP THE AIRBAG LIGHT SWITCH ON/OFF LOGIC. NOTHING WAS DONE TO FIX THE CORE ISSUE. IT AGAIN RANDOMLY SWITCHES ON/OFF WHEN A PERSON IS SITTING. I HAVE TALKED TO NISSAN AND THEY DON'T SEEM TO CARE ABOUT IT. THEY ARE JUST TRYING TO HIDE OR CIRCUMVENT THIS ISSUE OR TRYING TO TELL CUSTOMERS THAT THERE IS NO ISSUE AT ALL. IT HAS BEEN MORE THAN THREE YEARS AND NISSAN IS NOT FIXING THIS ISSUE .EVERYTIME THEY WILL SAY IT'S FIXED EITHER AFTER RECALL OR REPAIR BUT IN REALITY THEY ARE JUST TRYING TO CIRCUMVENT IT THROUGH S/W UPGRADES.

DEAR NHSTA YESTERDAY, WHEN I WAS AT A STOP, MY CAR STARTING TO "JUMP" FORWARD. AFTER WORKING A 12 HOUR SHIFT, I DECIDED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE NEXT DAY. BUT ON MY WAY TO WORK THE FOLLOWING DAY, I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 45-50MPH AND I COULDN'T ACCELERATE. I CAME TO A BUSY INTERSECTION AND STOPPED WHEN I TRIED TO MOVE IT JUST STOPPED. I TURNED IT OFF TO RESTART, PUT IT IN PARK AND IT STULLED AGAIN. I WAS IN A VERY BUSY INTERSECTION "5 LANES". I HAD TO CALL 911 TO HELP DIRECT TRAFFIC SO THEY COULD PUSH MY CAR OFF THE ROAD. I HAVE ONLY 61000 MILES AND I AM THE ONLY OWNER OF THE CAR. MY CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER. I WAS TOLD IT IS THE CVT. I AM AN ICU/ER NURSE. I BOUGHT A NISSAN DUE TO SAFETY RATINGS. LEAVING ME SIT IN A BUSY INTERSECTION, PLUS THE AIRBAG RECALL, I WOULD NOT CONSIDER THIS CAR SAFE,ANYMORE. I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT NISSAN AND CVTS, WHY ARE THERE NO RECALLS? ARE YOU WAITING FOR MORE DEATHS AND ACCIDENTS TO OCCUR? WHEN A COMPANY OFFERS AND EXTENDED WARRANTY SPECIFICALLY FOR A CVT UP TO 100,000 MILES, THEN OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A PROBLEM. PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE SINCERELY, JILL S RN,BSN,CEN,CCRN
