Recalls and investigations

  1. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchJun 13, 2022

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Pathfinder vehicles. On certain Pathfinder vehicles, the secondary hood latch may malfunction and remain in the unlatched, unsecured, position when the hood is closed.

An unsecured hood could unexpectedly open while driving, obstructing the driver's view, and increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the bell crank assembly, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 26, 2025. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall are R22A2 R22A3 and R24B7.

  2. Exterior lighting, brake lights, switchJan 20, 2021

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Nissan Pathfinder vehicles. The location of the brake light switch may cause the brake light switch relay to repeatedly open and close. Overtime, this can cause the relay to stick in the "ON" position, with the brake lights remaining illuminated even when the brakes are not applied. Additionally, this may interfere with the brake-shift interlock, allowing the driver to shift the vehicle out of the "Park" position, without depressing the brake pedal.

Continual illumination of the brake lights can prevent other drivers from realizing the vehicle is actually slowing down, increasing the risk of a crash. With the brake override activated, the driver will not be able to accelerate normally, increasing the risk of a crash. The driver can shift the vehicle out of the "PARK" position without depressing the brake, allowing the vehicle to rollaway, increasing the risk of injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, either re-install the brake light switch or swap positions with the Automatic Speed Control Device (ASCD) switch; depending on the model year vehicle. In addition, the brake light relay will be replaced with a new one. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 1, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall PC786. Note: this recall supersedes 16V-380.

  3. Exterior lighting, brake lights, switchMay 31, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Pathfinder vehicles manufactured June 20, 2012, to June 13, 2013. The brake light switch may have been installed incorrectly causing the relay to make intermittent contact and repeatedly cycle. This may result in the relay remaining in the "ON" position, causing the brake lights to remain illuminated even when the brakes are not applied. Additionally, the brake light switch may interfere with the brake-shift interlock, allowing the driver to shift the vehicle out of the "Park" position, without depressing the brake pedal.

If the brake override is activated, the driver will not be accelerate normally, increasing the risk of a crash. If the brake lights remain illuminated, other drivers may fail to stop when the vehicle actually brakes, increasing the risk of a crash. If the driver inadvertently shift the vehicle out of the "PARK" position without depressing the brake, the vehicle may rollaway, increasing the risk of injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake light switch and, as necessary, replace the relay, free of charge. The recall began on July 25, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  4. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationApr 26, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.

If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

  5. Air bags, frontalOct 20, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima and Pathfinder vehicles, 2013-2014 Nissan Sentra vehicles, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles, 2014-2015 Infiniti QX60 vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The affected vehicles received an incorrect occupant classification system (OCS) control unit during a repair. These OCS control units may incorrectly classify the front passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.

If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  6. Structure, body, hood, hinge and attachmentsJan 26, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Nissan Pathfinder vehicles manufactured June 20, 2012, to November 18, 2013, 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid vehicles manufactured July 18, 2013, to November 18, 2013, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles manufactured November 29, 2011, to June 14, 2013, and 2014 QX60 vehicles manufactured May 16, 2013, to November 18, 2013, and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles manufactured July 18, 2013, to November 18, 2013. In the affected vehicles the hood release cable assembly may have been installed incorrectly preventing the latching claw from fully engaging. The secondary latch may remain in the open position when the hood is closed.

If the primary hood latch is released and the secondary latch fails during operation of the vehicle, it could cause the hood to open during vehicle operation impairing the driver's vision, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will modify the angle of the hood release mechanism to provide additional length to the release cable, free of charge. The recall began on March 9, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  7. Power train, automatic transmission, cooling unit and linesMar 26, 2014

Nissan North America (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013 Pathfinder vehicles manufactured April 18, 2012, through October 3, 2012, and equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). In the affected vehicles, the internal oil cooler (ITOC) hose may detach from the cooler due to inadequate clamping force, allowing transmission fluid to leak.

The loss of transmission fluid could cause the transmission to function improperly and the vehicle to stop accelerating, increasing the risk of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install an oil hose repair kit, free of charge. The recall began on May 12, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  8. Electrical system, softwareMar 25, 2014

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Altima, LEAF, Pathfinder, and Sentra, model year 2013 NV200 (aka Taxi) and Infiniti JX35 and model year 2014 Infiniti Q50 and QX60 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the occupant classification system (OCS) software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.

If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger airbag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on April 14, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  9. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slipOct 17, 2013

Nissan is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Nissan Pathfinder vehicles manufactured April 18, 2012, through September 20, 2013; model year 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles manufactured September 15, 2011, through January 16, 2013; and model year 2014 Infiniti QX60 vehicles manufactured January 17, 2013, through September 20, 2013. In the affected vehicles, during light braking on rough roads, the antilock brake system (ABS) brake pressure output software may lead to an increase in stopping distance.

The increased stopping distance may increase the risk of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the ABS, free of charge. The recall began on November 18, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  10. Service brakesApr 12, 2013

Nissan is recalling certain model year 2013 Pathfinder and Infiniti JX vehicles manufactured December 3, 2012, through January 29, 2013. The front brake torque member was improperly cast resulting in structural weakness. This can lead to premature failure and cracking.

If the brake torque member fails, the brake caliper may move and contact the inside of the road wheel, resulting in reduced braking, increasing the risk of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the manufacturing date of the torque members and replace them, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 20, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.

  11. Air bagsMar 1, 2013

Nissan is recalling certain model year 2013 Altima, LEAF, Pathfinder, Sentra, and Infiniti JX35 vehicles. Sensors within the passenger Occupant Detection System (ODS) may have been manufactured out of specification. This may cause the system to malfunction and permanently suppress the passenger airbag.

If the vehicle is involved in a crash necessitating airbag deployment and the passenger airbag is suppressed, there may be an increased risk of personal injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ODS sensors and replace them as neccessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 6, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.

THIS HAPPENED TO ME YESTERDAY 09/07/2020 ON MY 2013 NISSAN PATHFINDER. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 45 MILES AN HOUR ON A RURAL EMPTY ROAD WHEN THE SUNROOF MADE A POP SOUND AND EXPLODED. I LOOKED IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR AND SAW A LARGE SHEET OF GLASS HIT THE ROAD AND DISINTEGRATE. WHEN I OPENED THE COVER FOR THE SUNROOF MOST OF THE GLASS WAS GONE. THE PIECES AROUND THE FRAME THAT REMAINED WERE SHATTERED. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO JOIN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT?

THE BOLT AND ARM THAT OPEN THE REAR LIFTGATE ON MY 2013 PATHFINDER RUSTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT. ONLY WARNING SIGN WAS ONCE LIFTED, IT AUTOMATICALLY CLOSED. THIS HAPPENED 5 TIMES. THE PISTON SNAPPED AND BROKE AWAY AND BLOCKED THE LIFT GATE FROM CLOSING. SECURING THE LIFT WAS CHALLENGING! ONLY WAY TO OPEN IS MANUALLY LIFTING IT AND HOLDING AND PROPPING IT OPEN. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT GETTING IT FIXED OR CHANGING FROM POWER TO A MANUAL LIFT. I NEED TO REPLACE BOTH SHOCKS AS WELL AS THE OPERATING SYSTEM EST $1400 BEFORE LABOR. OBVIOUSLY THERE IS AN ISSUE SINCE NISSAN HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED HOW THE DOOR OPENS AND CLOSES! NISSAN ISSUED A RECALL ON THE ROGUE FOR THAT SAME ISSUE WITH THE TAILGATE. . . . . I'M SURE THE PISTONS FROM THE ROGUE THAT WERE RECALLED ARE INCREDIBLY SIMILAR TO THE ONES IN THE PATHFINDER. WITH COVID AND CURBSIDE PICKUP, FOLKS HAVE TO PUT ITEMS IN VIA THE WINDOWS - VERY CHALLENGING. *TR

SINCE I PURCHASED MY PATHFINDER, I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS CLOSE CALLS IN ALMOST HAVING AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE MIRRORS AND THE SIDE PANELS INSIDE BY THE MIRRORS, I CANNOT SEE IF ANOTHER VEHICLE IS COMING OR IF I'M AT A 4 WAY STOP I CAN NOT SEE IF THERE IS A CAR ON EITHER SIDE OF ME AT THE STOP. IT'S VERY DANGEROUS. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE HAVING THIS ISSUE, BUT I JUST SAW A FORUM ABOUT IT ONLINE. I JUST DON'T WANT TO BE IN AN ACCIDENT AND HARM MYSELF OR ANYONE ELSE.

ALSO, THEY ISSUED A RECALL ON THE NISSAN ROGUE AROUND THE SAME TIME THAT WE GOT OUR PATHFINDER FOR THAT SAME ISSUE WITH THE TAILGATE..... DRIVER DOOR LATCH HAS BROKEN PREVENTING OPENING THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE. THE DOOR MAY ONLY BE OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A DRIVEWAY AND EXITING WAS PREVENTED UNTIL SOMEONE ELSE OPENED THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE.

THE PLASTIC DOOR HANDLE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE IS PRONE TO BREAKING, WHICH MEANS ONE CANNOT QUICKLY EXIT THE VEHICLE IN AN EMERGENCY. MINE BROKE AND, FOR A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF TIME I WASN'T SURE HOW I COULD GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE. IF THE CAR IS NOT RUNNING, OR THE BATTERY IS INOPERATIVE, ONE CANNOT ROLL DOWN THE WINDOW TO GET OUT THAT WAY. THE CONSOLE MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT, IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, FOR THE DRIVER TO EXIT THROUGH THE PASSENGER DOOR. THE ASSUMPTION IS THAT YOU CAN ROLL DOWN THE WINDOW, OR THAT YOU ARE PHYSICALLY ABLE TO CLIMB OVER THE CONSOLE AND EXIT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE A RECALL AND REPLACE ISSUE. THE PLASTIC DOOR HANDLE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED WITH A HANDLE THAT WILL ALWAYS OPEN THE DOOR. OBVIOUSLY, THE CAR WAS STATIONARY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE PART NUMBER FOR THE REPLACEMENT HANDLE IS: 80671-3TAOD. IF NEEDED, I CAN PROVIDE A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE BROKEN PLASTIC DOOR HANDLE AND THE REPAIR INVOICE. I AM REQUESTING THAT NISSAN COVER THE CHARGES FOR THE REPAIR, BUT MY GREATER CONCERN IS THAT SOMEONE WILL BE TRAPPED IN A BURNING CAR, OR SOME EMERGENCY SITUATION.

DEFECTIVE INTERIOR DRIVERS SIDE DOOR HANDLE. THE INSIDE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR HANDLE ON MY 2013 NISSAN PATHFINDER BROKE WHEN I TRIED TO OPEN THE DOOR AND I AM UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE. THE CAR WAS PARKED WITH THE IGNITION TURNED OFF WHEN THE HANDLE FAILED. I REMOVED THE DOOR COVER AND INSPECTED THE HANDLE ASSEBLY TO FIND A SMALL PIECE OF PLASTIC HAD BROKEN OFF. THE BROKEN PIECE OF PLASTIC WAS DESIGNED TO HOLD THE BALL-END OF THE DOOR LATCH CABLE IN PLACE. FROM MY OWN INTERNET SEARCH INVESTIGATIONS, IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND IT IS COMMON ON DRIVER SIDE DOOR HANDLES GIVEN THAT IS THE HANDLE USED MOST FREQUENTLY. THE OTHER DOOR HANDLES ARE MANUFACTURED THE SAME WAY SO IT IS LIKELY THAT ALL WILL FAIL DEPENDING ON FREQUENCY OF USE. IN MY OPINION, THIS DEFECT IS RELATED TO POOR DESIGN AND CHEAP MATERIALS. IF THE HANDLE ASSEMBLY OR THE PART OF THE ASSEMBLY THAT HOLDS THE LATCH CABLE IN PLACE WERE MADE OF METAL OR A STRONGER PLASTIC, THERE WOULD BE NO DEFECT. THEREFORE I BELIEVE THIS DEFECT IS THE MANUFACTURERS RESPONSIBILITY AND SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE LIST OF RECALLS THAT EFFECT THIS VEHICLE. THE SAME DOOR HANDLE, PART NUMBER 80671-3TA0A IS THE SAME PART USED IN SEVERAL OTHER NISSAN VEHICLES. WHEN I SEARCHED FOR A REPLACEMENT PART THROUGH A LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP'S PARTS DEPARTMENT, THE PART HAS BEEN SUPERSEDED BY PART NUMBER 80671-3TA0D SO IT SEEMS LIKE NISSAN MAY BE AWARE OF THE DEFECT. THIS DEFECT IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN, LET ALONE A GREAT INCONVENIENCE. IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION THIS FAILURE COULD BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE OR DEATH.

THE SUN VISORS ARE DEFECTIVE AND BREAK VERY EASILY. THEY WON'T STAY UP AND YOU HEAR A LOUD CLICKING AFTER A PART BREAKS IN THE VISOR. YOU CAN GOOGLE/YOUTUBE SUN VISOR ISSUES FOR PATHFINDER AND THERE IS A TON OF REPORTS ON THIS. NISSAN IS CHARGING FOLKS ~$190 PER VISOR TO REPAIR THIS WHEN IT IS A DEFECT.

  22. Structure, Jan 28, 2017

THE SUN VISORS WHILE DRIVING DO NOT SUPPORT THEMSELVES AND BREAK EASILY MOST LIKELY BECAUSE OF CHEAP PLASTIC. WHILE DRIVING THEY MAY FOLD DOWN AND OBSTRUCT MY VIEW OF THE ROAD WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES AT ANY GIVEN SPEED. I HAVE HAD TO TIE MY SUN VISORS SO THEY DO NOT RANDOMLY COME DOWN. THIS IS ALSO A PROBLEM BECAUSE THERE IS NOW NO PROTECTION FROM SUN LIGHT AND IT IS HARD TO SEE THE ROAD WHEN SUNLIGHT IS PRESENT.

THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THERE WAS A FLIPPING NOISE UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V142000 (POWER TRAIN), BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

THE REAR LIFT GATE HAS STOPPED FUNCTIONING FOR THE SECOND TIME SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THE CAR ON 12/21/2012. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE MOTOR AGAIN IN 4 YEARS AND TO BE TOLD BY NISSAN THE MOTOR WILL NOT BE COVERED UNLESS THE STRUTS ARE ALSO TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THEIR OWN FAULTINESS. NOT ONLY IS THIS A COSTLY AND INCONVENIENT REPAIR, BUT THE MOTORS ARE ON BACK ORDER ACCORDING TO NISSAN PARTS. THERE IS NO ESTIMATE OF A DELIVERY DATE. THE DOOR WON'T LATCH IF THE MOTOR ISN'T FUNCTIONING. SO, AS A RESULT, I AM DRIVING AROUND WITH A REAR LIFT GATE THAT CAN'T BE MANUALLY CLOSED DUE TO A POOR DESIGN BY NISSAN. SINCE THE LIFT GATE WON'T LATCH MANUALLY THE LIFT GATE HAS HAD TO BE TIED DOWN INTERNALLY TO PREVENT THE LIFT GATE FROM FLYING OPEN WHILE DRIVING. THE INTERIOR LIGHTS COME ON EVERY TIME I ACCELERATE SINCE THE DOOR WON'T LATCH AND THIS MAKES THE HAZARD LIGHTS START FLASHING EXTERNALLY AND INTERNALLY IN ADDITION TO WARNING LIGHTS COMING ON CONTINUOUSLY IN THE MESSAGE CENTER. THERE ARE LOUD BEEPS THE ENTIRE CAR RIDE WHICH ARE INCREDIBLY ANNOYING. CARS DRIVING BEHIND ME ARE NOT SURE IF I AM IN DISTRESS OR HAVING A MEDICAL EMERGENCY SINCE THE LIGHTS START FLASHING AT WILL. I AM CONCERNED I WILL CAUSE AN ACCIDENT! IT HAS BEEN ONE WEEK AND NO RESOLUTION IN SIGHT. I HAVE TO PAY TO GET A NEW MOTOR TO CLOSE MY TAILGATE EVEN IF I WISH TO USE THE MANUAL CLOSE METHOD. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! *TR
