Recalls and investigations

  1. Seats, front assembly, seat heater/coolerNov 19, 2014

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Prius and Corolla, 2009-2011 Venza, 2006-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2005-2011 Sienna and Sequoia, 2006-2011 Tacoma 4x2 and 4x4, Camry, Highlander, Tundra 4x2 and 4x4, and 2007-2011 Rav4 and 4Runner. The affected vehicles may experience compression of the seat cushion which may damage the seat heater wiring.

Damage to the seat heater wiring could cause the wires to short, increasing the risk of the seat burning and causing personal injury to the occupant.

SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the heaters with copper strand heating elements and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory, free of charge. The recall is expected to began in January 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.

  2. Suspension, front, control arm, lower armNov 13, 2014

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2011 Toyota Camry vehicles manufactured March 8, 2011, to July 20, 2011. In the affected vehicles, the rubber boot on the front suspension lower arm ball joint may have been damaged during manufacturing. The damage could cause the boot to leak lubricant grease which could then cause the ball joint to wear and loosen prematurely.

A loosened ball joint may separate from the knuckle and could cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the ball joint, free of charge. The recall began on December 16, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

  3. Equipment, other, labelsApr 9, 2013

Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.

Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

  4. Air bags, frontal, sensor/control module-inactiveJan 16, 2013

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.

If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.

Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

1- the stickiness of dashboard 2- the shiny/deflective surface of the dashboard creates as safety hazard.

  2. Other or unspecified, Jun 21, 2026

I am submitting this complaint to report a serious safety hazard involving my 2011 Toyota Camry. The vehicle's dashboard has deteriorated and is melting, creating a sticky surface that reflects sunlight onto the windshield and significantly impairs visibility while driving. The dashboard continuously emits a residue that transfers to the windshield, making it difficult to keep the glass clear and further reducing visibility. The resulting glare can be severe, especially during daylight hours, creating dangerous driving conditions and increasing the risk of an accident. I understand that Toyota previously acknowledged this defect and offered a customer support program for affected vehicles. However, Toyota has denied assistance because it claims I missed a deadline for repairs. I never received any notification regarding the program or any deadline. As a result, the safety hazard remains uncorrected. This issue is not cosmetic. The melting dashboard directly affects the driver's ability to see the roadway clearly and safely operate the vehicle. The condition continues to worsen over time and presents an ongoing risk to vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and other motorists. I respectfully request that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration review this matter and determine whether additional action is warranted to address this known safety-related defect. I believe affected vehicle owners who did not receive notice of the repair program should not be left with an unresolved safety hazard that compromises safe vehicle operation.

Upon looking to purchase another vehicle I ran the vin on my 2011 Toyota camry and noticed when looking at NHTSA it showed an incident that someone reported under my vin number, So I figured I would try vin # with 0 (zero) instead and nothing came up. So now I'm wondering what's going on with vin #? Is it possible for 2 toyotas to have same vin?

  4. Other or unspecified, Engine, Feb 20, 2026

Dear NHTSA Investigators, I am writing to formally report what I believe is a significant safety defect in certain 2007–2011 Toyota Camry vehicles, specifically related to excessive engine oil consumption in models equipped with the 2AZ-FE 2.4L four-cylinder engine (primarily 2007–2009, with some reports extending to later years). This issue causes the engine to burn oil at an abnormally high rate—often 1 quart or more every few hundred to 1,200 miles—without any visible external leaks. Owners frequently report no adequate warning from the dashboard oil light or other indicators before the oil level drops critically low. If the engine runs out of oil while driving, it can lead to rapid overheating, internal component damage (such as scored bearings or cylinder walls), and sudden engine seizure or catastrophic failure. Such a failure while the vehicle is in motion poses a serious safety risk, including: potential for crashes, including rear-end collisions if the vehicle stops abruptly without warning, or veering into other lanes/obstacles. Sudden loss of engine power. Increased likelihood of loss of control etc. This problem has been widely documented through thousands of owner complaints (e.g., hundreds on sites like CarComplaints.com for the 2007 model alone), NHTSA ODI reports, and Toyota's own Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and Warranty Enhancement Programs (such as ZE7 for certain models). While Toyota addressed it via a warranty extension (not a full recall) involving piston/ring replacements for qualifying vehicles after an oil consumption test, many owners—particularly those outside the original coverage period or with higher mileage—have faced expensive engine repairs or replacements out of pocket. The lack of a mandatory recall means the issue persists in many vehicles still on the road. I am concerned that this defect creates an unreasonable risk to drivers, passengers, and other road users. I had an issue with this and I needed to fill up 4.5Q

I got my license back last Thursday. I had noticed before I started driving how shiny and sticky the dash area was/is. I was already thinking of having it covered. Since Thursday, twice, I have been driving after dark, and lights reflecting off of the shine of the dash nearly blinded me. Tonight, I almost lost control and ran off the road. I have discoved that this was an issue with several years and models of your vehicles. I am a 53 year old disabled American single woman. I have no help, no money and too much stress. This issue not only adds stress, but has also endangered my health and the health of other motorists. I do not know if you did anything to fix these issues, but obviously, the previous owner did not care about the dangers, I DO.PLEASE contact me ASAP and tell me when and how Toyota will fix this dangerous model defect. I do not want the flaw to cause an accident and I can tell, IT WILL! Calli Atwell [XXX] I just got my liscense back last Thursday. Since I have been driving, twice, headlights reflecting off of the shiny sticky dashboard has nearly blinded me...it is a problem every time a light hits it. Tonight, I nearly lost control and was forced to run off the shoulder, rather than swerve into the other lane! It was scary and dangerous, not just to me, but also to other drivers. I know this was recalled, obviously the last owner didn't care about the dangers, Ido! I am a [XXX] , disabled woman with no money nor help. Please contact me ASAP REGARDING FIXING THIS DANGEROUS HEALTH RISK. CALLI ATWELL By the way, just Googled, there was even a recall! What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The dashboard of my 2011 Toyota Camry has melted and deteriorated over time. The surface has become soft, sticky, and shiny, likely due to prolonged sun exposure and heat. This is a known issue in this vehicle model. The dashboard is still in my vehicle and is available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The melting dashboard creates a glossy, mirror-like glare on the windshield, especially during the daytime or when the sun is directly hitting the dash. This glare significantly reduces my ability to see the road, traffic signals, other vehicles, and pedestrians, particularly when turning or driving toward sunlight. It makes everyday driving more dangerous and increases the risk of an accident. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The issue has not yet been officially confirmed by a Toyota dealership or independent mechanic, but it is clearly visible and consistent, and I have taken photos documenting the condition. I plan to have it formally inspected. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, the vehicle has not yet been inspected by Toyota, the police, or any insurance representative. However, I am willing to provide access for inspection by the manufacturer or any other relevant party upon request. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? There were no warning lamps or messages related to this issue. I first noticed the dashboard becoming sticky and shiny around June 2023, and the glare and surface deterioration have steadily worsened since then, especially during the summer months or after the car is parked in the sun.

  7. Structure, Other or unspecified, Visibility/wiper, Jun 4, 2025

I started noticing a glare on my 2011 Toyota Camry on the inside on the dashboard. It appeared shiny and I figured I accidentally cleaned it with the wrong product. It started at the closet point of the windshield so I didn’t worry about it. Today (6/4/25) I went to clean it again and noticed the whole dashboard was extremely sticky and NOTHING would clean it off. Paper towels and microfiber towels stuck to it. I noticed the dash was coming apart when I tried to clean it. I called Toyota customer service and they informed me they sent a letter in 2018 about the class action lawsuit and that they were replacing the dashboard. I do not remember ever getting this letter. They woman tried to ask someone higher up about trying to help me since the cut off date was 2021. They said there was nothing they could do due to it not being done in 2021. This is a safety issue due to the glare when driving. I believe this needs to be a recall and that customers should be able to have Toyota fix it. It’s continue to melt and it’s going to end up ruining the whole car. Please take cere of this, please check it as a recall. I would assume this would mess with the airbags as well. I cannot afford to have the whole dashboard replaced, when it should be a recall due to Toyota being at fault. It’s their responsibility to test these things and they failed big time with this. A dashboard should not melt.

  8. Structure, Other or unspecified, Jan 8, 2025

The dashboard melted and everything sticks to it. also the visor to block sun unhinged on driver side and passenger side won’t go back up it just stays hanging down

  9. Other or unspecified, Jan 3, 2025

    Vehicle dashboard is melting.

  10. Other or unspecified, Visibility/wiper, Jul 25, 2024

The dashboard has become very sticky and shiny creating a very bad glare on my windshield. It makes driving more difficult when I cannot see.

  11. Other or unspecified, Jun 8, 2024

The top dashboard is sticky, almost like a melting feeling. I've tried everything possible to no avail.

  12. Other or unspecified, Engine, Feb 20, 2024

My 2011 Toyota Camry LE (2.5L, 2WD, 4 cylinder, automatic transmission) has been experiencing problems with oil consumption. I have to add a quart of oil between oil changes (add 1 quart every 2000 miles). I'm using the recommended oil type (OW-20). Also, I'm experiencing loud rattling noises coming from the engine after cold start up. The noise is very loud and usually quiets down after driving for about 5 minutes or so. These issues are very common for people who own this particular model. I'm wondering if there was a recall that I perhaps may have missed or wasn't informed on. This is a well known issue for toyota drivers. Something needs to be done to address these issues.

  13. Other or unspecified, Jan 31, 2024

Top surface of my Dashboard have some very sticky surface. I tried to clean with soap and water, and some other chemicals but nothing works. It is so sticky that when I tried to use rags to wipe off, my rag got stick to the surface. Specially in a hot summer day it almost seems like the surface is melting. Sometime I feel like, some of my medical issues may be related to this too. Because recently I stop driving this car for work (which I usually do a 1.25 hrs commute} and some of my issues reduced quite considerably. I talked to toyota and they told me that they did had a recall for this issue but Since during that time I just barely bought this vehile with a small dealership, they never informed me and I never received any mail . But they said they send me in the mail. Now they said that recall duration is over and there is nothin they can do about it. So I am stuck with this sticky dashboard. I will appreciate if you can advise me

  14. Other or unspecified, Sep 9, 2023

The dashboard has turned into sticky glue. Called Toyota and they said that they had send a mail regarding recall to get it fixed. I never received a letter and now they are saying that it is no longer under the warranty. The sticky/melting dashboard is safely issue as it creates shiny glare on the windshield and creates obstruction to the clear view.

Clear coat on blue Toyota started peeling a couple years ago and I took my car to Toyota to have the paint repaired, and now it os doing it again. I have seen numerous blue Toyotas of varying models that are doing the same thing.

A Sticky dashboard - causing excessive glare on windshield. I've been servicing it at the authorized dealer I purchased from but never mentioned of recall or replacement. This is a manufacturing defect that should be a lifelong recall to original buyers?

  17. Other or unspecified, Feb 3, 2023

I have had a sticky dash causing excessive glare on my windshield for years. I recently received a recall notice for my 2011 toyota camry about the paint. I asked them while I was there if anything could be done about the dash as well and was informed that there was a recall on the dash, but it was expired. However, I was never notified by mail or phone or email that there was a recall on the dash until it was expired.

  19. Other or unspecified, Sep 27, 2022

Purchased vehicle brand new and presently have a little over 76,000 miles. Driving on I-77 @ 65 my left Sunvisor suddenly came down impeding my view. Research informed me Toyota had a recall which had Expired. I knew nothing about the Recall but regardless they know it’s a problem but quoted me a price of $231.69️ to repair/replace. Why is Toyota allowed to punish customers for their malfunctioning issues. It’s frustrating and insulting. Please help

  20. Other or unspecified, Visibility/wiper, Jul 26, 2022

My dashboard on my 2011 Camry has recently started melting & is extremely sticky. One spot on the driver's side is really bad & causing a glare on my windshield. I am very concerned this is going to cause visibility issues while driving. This is a clear defect. After doing extensive research to figure out why this is happening & what to do, I called my local dealership on 7-22-22, then called Toyota Corp same day. They refused to do anything to help me! The rep told me an extended warranty was offered for various Toyota models due to sticky dashboards including my car, but that mine expired May 2021. When I told her I never received anything in the mail, she replied they only send out notices for recalls & this wasn't a recall. She suggested to get an estimate from my local dealership, then call back, but that they still couldn't cover the repair. I asked to speak with a Supervisor, but no one ever answered. The rep told me a supervisor would call me back within 24 hours...4 days later...still nothing. This is absolutely ridiculous that Toyota would expect me to repair this obvious manufacturing defect out of my pocket! My dash is ugly & dangerous! This is my third Toyota & I always recommend Toyota vehicles to friends/ family. I was getting ready to purchase another Toyota, but I'm so disappointed in Toyota that I'm seriously reconsidering. I can't believe they don't seem to care about their customers anymore than this.

  21. Other or unspecified, May 19, 2022

Sunroof randomly exploded. I was driving approximately 40mph down a city road on 5/18/22 and the sunroof exploded dropping a 4x8 inches worth of glass shards and fracturing the rest of the glass. There was no debris, rough driving conditions or unlevel road when it happened. I was relatively safe when it happened as there was not any traffic, but if it were on the highway in traffic it could have caused issue. I have not done any inspections by manufacturer, insurance, etc. I was not sure how accountability works with it breaking for no reason, so I was just planning to buy a used sunroof and replacing it. There were no warning, just a random bang when it exploded.

  22. Other or unspecified, Apr 4, 2022

Driver side visor fell down. It has a faulty plastic bracket. This is the second time this has happened. The first time, Toyota issued a recall and replaced the broken visor. However, the same problem has occurred with the replacement visor. It is a safety issue as it can be difficult to drive in the sun without a visor.

  23. Other or unspecified, Visibility/wiper, Mar 17, 2022

I have a 2011 Toyota Camry with 72,000 miles on it. The dashboard has a melting issue where it leaves a residue on anything it comes in contact with and is sticky. The major safety issue is the glare that reflects onto the windshield while driving and interferes with visibility. I prior owner, an elderly gentleman, was unaware of any recalls/repairs that Toyota was providing. I called Toyota and they said that they are aware of this issue but cannot repair or provide reimbursements for repairs because there is no recall for their dashboard.

  24. Other or unspecified, Visibility/wiper, Feb 5, 2022

The dashboard on my vehicle is sticky causing limited visibility when driving and is a distraction. I did not receive a recall on this.

  25. Other or unspecified, Dec 14, 2021

In hot weather, the dashboard is covered by thousands of tiny clear bubbles, which reflect onto the windshield, making safe driving difficult. Toyota told me that they issued a notice on this, offering to replace the dashboard, but the offer has expired. I believe this situation is a driving hazard and Toyota should be required to replace the dashboard at this later date.. The pictures show the reflection on the windshield (The reflections move around and this is a more benign example.), and what the bubbles on the dashboard look like.
