Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationDec 20, 2023

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Corolla, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus ES350, Lexus RX350, Lexus RX450H, 2021 Sienna Hybrid, Lexus ES250, 2020-2022 Camry, Camry Hybrid, and ES300H vehicles. A short circuit may develop in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, preventing the front passenger air bag from deploying.

An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.

Dealers will inspect and replace the sensor as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed in February 2024. Some final remedy owner letters were mailed October 31, 2024. Letters will continue to be mailed in phases through January 2026. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TB15/23TA15 Lexus 23LB03/23LA03.

The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.

If the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly with an improved one, free of charge. Owners of specific models were notified that remedy parts were available starting January 21, 2021. Owners of other models will be notified as remedy parts become available. Remedy parts should be available for all affected vehicles by late March 2021. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. 3. Engine and engine coolingFeb 6, 2020

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020 Toyota Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES300h and 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles equipped with 2.5L 4-Cylinder engines. Porosity in the engine castings may result in cracks than can allow coolant to leak internally and/or externally.

A coolant leak can cause the engine to overheat and cause a vehicle stall in conventional gasoline vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, for all involved vehicles, the engine may get damaged mechanically, possibly resulting in an engine oil leak, increasing the risk of a fire.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the engine including the engine block, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 3, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TA04. Lexus' number for this recall is 20LA02.

I called a mechanic to stop by and maybe reset the computer …so much I know(the dash board was giving me a hybrid system failure) but the reader said its fuel pump control circuit low ,witch on the other hand is not allowing the car to start of and somehow related to the vehicle stability module and break system not mentioning a solenoid problem as well…

  5. Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 7, 2021

I purchased this vehicle on 01/12/2021 from Toyota of Greenville, SC. I was initially told that the vehicle was a Certified Pre-Owned Toyota, which means it went through an intensive reconditioning process and passed all certification requirements. As I was signing the papers to purchase the car, I was told that it could not be sold as a Certified vehicle because it has the open manufacturer recall #20TA02. It has been almost 9 months and I have not received any notice of a pending fix for this potentially deadly recall, summarized below. SUMMARY: The subject vehicles are equipped with a low-pressure fuel pump which may stop operating. If this were to occur, warning lights and messages may be displayed on the instrument panel, and the engine may run rough. This may result in a vehicle stall, and the vehicle may be unable to be restarted. SAFETY RISK: If a vehicle stall occurs while driving at higher speeds, this could increase the risk of a crash. REMEDY: Any authorized Toyota dealer will replace the low-pressure fuel pump with an improved one FREE OF CHARGE. I am hesitant to take the vehicle on a long trip or take it on the highway. I do not want to be stranded during my trip or die if the fuel pump shuts off at high speed. I have been purchasing Toyota products since 2000. I am feeling very abused and and neglected buy what I thought was a safe and reliable brand. I will be in the market for another vehicle soon. Now, I am not sure Toyota is the only brand to consider. Please let them know that I am not a happy customer because of this ongoing problem with their Number 1 Selling vehicle. 6. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 7, 2021

When I press the button to start my 2020 Camry it has difficulty starting. It chugs/lags. It also smells of coolant/antifreeze when this happens. It has done this since the day I leased it. I have taken the vehicle back to the dealership 3 times and each time I’m told that they hooked it up to their computer and can’t find anything wrong and they can’t replicate the problem. I have had several witnesses/passengers inside and outside my vehicle who have heard the starting issue and commented on coolant smell. To date, my vehicle only has 7000 miles on it.

TOYOTA ADVERTISES AND REPRESENTS THAT THE 2020 CAMRY SE FUEL TANK CAPACITY IS 16 GALLONS, AND BASED ON ITS 28CITY/39HWY MPG RATING, THE CAMRY'S RANGE SHOULD BE 448/624 MILES. HOWEVER, MY CAR ON A FULL TANK REPORTS 385 MILES TO EMPTY. TOYOTA RAN TESTS AND STATED I GET 30MPG. IF THIS IS TRUE MY GAS TANK IS ONLY SUPPORTING ABOUT 13 GALLONS OF GAS. TOYOTA HAS ALREADY IDENTIFIED THIS AS AN ISSUE IN THEIR 2019/2020 HYBRID MODELS.

FUEL PUMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACE. THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON MY CAR SINCE JANUARY AND TOYOTA TOLD ME THIS YESTERDAY. FUEL PUMP IS DEFECTIVE AND CAN CAUSE THE CAR TO STALL WHILE IN OPERATION. 12. Vehicle speed control, Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Jan 30, 2020

SLOW ACCELERATION DURING 1ST 1 OR 2 GEARS. ALMOST HAD MULTIPLE ACCIDENTS IN HIGHWAY DUE TO SLOW ACCELERATION WHEN CHANGING LANES. THE VEHICLE DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY RESPOND TO ACCELERATION WHEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS USED. THE VEHICLE HAS A COUPLE OF SECONDS DELAY UNTIL IT CHANGING INTO NEXT GEAR. DEALER NON RESPONSIVE. I BROUGHT IT INTO MY TOYOTA DEALER AND THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN DROVE MY CAR WITH ME IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. I EXPLAINED THAT MY PREVIOUS (3) V6 TOYOTA CAMRY'S DID NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH ACCELERATION, HE TOTALLY UNDERSTOOD. THE NEW 8- SPEED TRANSMISSION HAS DIFFERENT SHIFT SETTINGS WHICH EXPLAINS THE ACCELERATION DELAY AND SOMETIMES CAUSES A JERKY MOTION FROM A DEAD STOP, DRIVING IN STOP & GO TRAFFIC OR WHILE ENTERING A HIGHWAY. ACCORDING TO THE TECH, THEY HAVE BEEN PROVIDED WITH NO FIXES FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THAT THE CAR WILL "LEARN" MY DRIVING HABITS THE MORE I DRIVE IT.
