Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, passenger side, inflator moduleOct 17, 2019

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2010-2016 4Runner, 2003-2006 Tundra, 2003-2013 Corolla, 2009-2010 Corolla Matrix, 2004-2005 RAV4, 2002-2007 Sequoia, 2011-2013 Sienna, 2008-2012 Scion xB, 2008-2009 Lexus IS-F, 2007-2012 Yaris and Lexus ES350, 2010-2017 Lexus GX460, 2002-2010 Lexus SC430, 2006-2012 Lexus IS250 and IS350 and 2010-2015 Lexus IS250C and IS350C vehicles. These vehicles had their driver or passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. The recall began November 20, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are J0A, J0B, and J0C. Lexus' numbers for this recall are JLI, JLJ, and JLK.

  2. Air bags, frontal, passenger side, inflator moduleAug 28, 2019

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2003-2008 Corolla, 2005-2008 Corolla Matrix, and Pontiac Vibe vehicles equipped with a front passenger air bag assembly replaced under a prior recall. The air bag may not unfold as designed during inflation under high temperature conditions, possibly resulting in the air bag not inflating properly.

An improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash.

Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag assembly or sub-assembly, free of charge. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are K1Q and K0Q. Pontiac owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is N192273760.

  3. Air bags, frontal, passenger side, inflator moduleDec 12, 2018

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2002-2005 Lexus SC and Toyota Sequoia, 2003-2005 Toyota Corolla and Tundra, and 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Toyota will notify the Toyota and Lexus owners. General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, or replace the air bag assembly that includes an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began January 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371, Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. Toyota's numbers for these recalls are J0A (Zone A Toyota), J0B (Zone B Toyota), J0C (Zone C Toyota), JLI (Zone A Lexus), JLJ (Zone B Lexus), and JLK (Zone C Lexus). Note: This recall includes vehicles that have had their air bag previously replaced under an earlier air bag campaign.

  4. Air bagsMay 13, 2015

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015, that they are recalling 2005-2007 Lexus SC, Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia, and Pontiac Vibe, and 2005-2006 Toyota Tundra vehicles that were originally sold, or ever registered, in Florida, along the Gulf Coast, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa. On June 16, 2015 Toyota expanded the recall to cover an additional 769,055 vehicles, including certain model year 2002-2004 Lexus SC, Toyota Sequoia, 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla Matrix, Toyota Corolla, Pontiac Vibe, and Toyota Tundra vehicles, as well the vehicles covered by the May 13, 2015 notification in the portions of Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas that were not previously included. The inflators in the front passenger air bags are susceptible to rupture in the event of a crash necessitating the deployment of the front passenger air bag.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-286 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the passenger side front air bag, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota began the recall on July 13, 2015. Pontiac Vibe owners may contact GM at 1-800-762-2737. GM began the recall on June 29, 2015. NOTE: This recacll supersedes recall 14V-655 in its entirety. For vehicles located in the U.S. states not listed above, please see Toyota recall 15V-285 which covers all other U.S. states.

  5. Air bagsMay 13, 2015

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015 that they are recalling certain model year 2004 Sequoia vehicles manufactured August 18, 2003, to August 19, 2004, and 2003-2004 Tundra vehicles manufactured March 18, 2003, to August 25, 2004. On June 16, 2015, Toyota expanded the recall to include an additional 1,270,468 vehicles, including model year 2002-2003 and 2005-2007 Sequoia, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2003-2007 Corolla, 2003-2007 Corolla Matrix, 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe and 2002-2007 Lexus SC vehicles. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag. The recall began on July 13, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-762-2737. NOTE: This recall supersedes recall 14V-312 in its entirety.

  1. Air bags, Apr 20, 2026, crash

Was in a wreck where I ended up rear ending a truck. I dont know how fast I was at after putting on the brakes. But originally it was 60 mph speed limit. The air bags did not deploy at all

  2. Air bags, Dec 21, 2025

I was in the middle lane and a car came into my lane so I swerved and a car came up on me in the right lane and my car did a 360 and ended up in a ditch

  3. Air bags, Nov 9, 2025, crash

The location of the collision sensors are positioned too low to allow consistent deployment of the airbags in the event of a collision with newer generation pickup trucks. The bumpers on the pickup trucks are too high, so a rear end collision results in the Toyota Corolla passing underneath the truck, and the air bag sensors do not sense the collision. The collision is only stopped when the windshield of the Toyota makes contact with the bumper, or the front of car impacts the axle of the pickup trucks.

  4. Air bags, Seat belts, Sep 4, 2025

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated after an air bag recall repair was performed on the vehicle, the front passenger's seat belt warning light illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

  5. Air bags, May 23, 2025

My son drove the car to the store less than 2 miles from the house and the airbag light came on and stayed while he was driving. He looked up the light in the owners manual and it said take vehicle to the Toyota dealer immediately! I know multiple cars we have owned in the past have had airbag recalls. I can not remember if this one has ever been recalled and repaired in the past. I attached the photos of the light and the manual.

  6. Air bags, Vehicle speed control, Other or unspecified, Sep 20, 2024

These 3 things may be related to each other because they all are connected to the steering wheel. My car can be scheduled for an inspection regarding these safety problems. 1. The Airbag warning light is sometimes on when I drive the car. I'm worried it won't work if I'm in a wreck. 2. The horn doesn't work when I press on the part of the steering wheel that should make it work. It does make a loud sound when I press the panic button on my key fob, but only when the car is turned off. I had to stick my head out of the window and yell at a driver who was getting close to hitting my car in a parking lot. I was parked, and they were backing out of their parking stall. They stopped inches away from my car. 3. The cruise control does not work in the car. I think by using this feature, and maintaining a steady speed, it reduces the chances of accidents. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? See answers #1, 2 and 3 above. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed? #1. No. A dealer told me it would cost me $100 to have them check the airbag light. #2. The horn was checked by an independent service center. #3. No. Has it been inspected? #1. This car has been serviced two different times for recalls for the airbag not working correctly. I wonder if the horn and cruise control wires were damaged, or not put back together correctly, when the recall work was being done, while owned by my sister-in-law. #2. No. #3. No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? #1. The warning lamp for the airbag started coming on around August 15, 2024. #2. No. It didn't work on February 11, 2023 - when I bought the car. #3. No. It didn't work on February 11, 2023.

  7. Air bags, Sep 9, 2024

The warning lamp for the airbag came On and it has been On for about two weeks now. No issues with the airbag, though. Have not been to a dealer or repair shop for check up. Have not been inspected by any agency.

  8. Air bags, Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Jun 25, 2024, crash

Unknown - The airbag light has been on for a while. Check engine light is also on, and after a few repairs/replacements of diagnosed issues the light remains. A Texas vehicle inspection report shows a P0420 fault code that will not go away, as well as a P0741 fault code about a torque converter clutch circuit underperforming or is stuck/off. I have a technical service bulletin from the inspection station that reads as follows: 10051865 Date: 04/16/2013 Toyota: In a collision, to help reduce injuries, with seat belt pre=tensioner and supplemental restraint systems (srs), it's possible that the devices may or may not perform as expected with unintended deployment.

  9. Air bags, Jun 10, 2024

Passenger air bag has been recalled and replaced twice. Drivers air bag light has been on quite some time. Has it or will it be recalled?

  10. Air bags, Feb 19, 2024

My 2005 Toyota Corolla airbags have been recalled AT LEAST TWICE already(?) and I have been to the dealer at least twice, for airbag recall repairs. Guess what? The red dashboard airbag light came on AGAIN! I took the 2005 Corolla to the Toyota dealer and the dealer announced that I have to pay for the latest airbag warning ️ dashboard light problem. Since the airbag is an obvious “problem area” for Toyota, and I never have used the airbags…I feel this latest “airbag problem” should be fixed, by Toyota for free. Toyotas infamous and repeated “airbag problem’” has reappeared… yet again! I don’t have the exact date and time the airbag warning light reappeared (again) and there was never an accident where the airbags were deployed, or a certain speed at which the warning light suddenly comes on. The airbag warning light is on 99% of the time. I also don’t have the mileage at which the airbag warning light reappeared (again) but there is currently approximately 146,000 miles on the 2005 car. Since I have NEVER USED the 2005 Corollas airbag and Toyota has a systematic, widespread, & REPEATEDLY fixed problem with this airbag, I wonder why should I have to pay for airbag repairs?

  11. Electrical system, Air bags, Dec 28, 2023

My airbag light stays on and I heard if the air bag gis off it could have metal in it..that don't sound like something I want to happen...also this cars power go's out and back on its scary when your driving down the road.it only has 141k miles something is wrong...

  12. Air bags, May 31, 2023, crash

The contact's client owned a 2005 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that while her client was driving at approximately 35 MPH, he crashed into another vehicle that had merged into his lane of traffic. The air bags deployed upon impact. Her client claimed that shrapnel was released from one of the air bags upon deployment; however, the claim had yet to be verified by the contact. Upon investigation, the contact discovered that the vehicle was currently under NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V025000(Air Bags) which she linked to the failure. The contact sought medical treatment at the hospital for a severe burn to an arm (arm unknown) as a result of the air bag deployment. He was also treated for pain to his neck, back and both knees. The whereabouts of the other driver were unknown. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed from the scene to an unknown facility. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had been destroyed as a result of the crash. The failure mileage was unknown.

  13. Air bags, Jan 11, 2023

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that the dealer previously replaced the passenger's side air bag under an unknown recall; however, the air bag warning light illuminated after the recall repair was performed. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that she needed to pay out-of-pocket for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

  14. Air bags, Structure, Vehicle speed control, Nov 16, 2022

I had the airbag repaired during the recall. However, the airbag warning light remains on. In addition, the speedometer has stopped at 299,999 although the trip meter still works. The paint is peeling and the roof is rusting which is classic for toyota.

  15. Air bags, Sep 10, 2022

I took my vehicle to the shop on 3/31/21 as I received a recall notice for the airbags. I am currently trying to pass inspection for registration renewal but have several warning lights; one of them being the airbag system. Obviously the problem has not been fixed.

  16. Air bags, May 6, 2022

I submitted my 2005 Toyota Corolla to Priority Toyota in Springfield, VA where they replaced my airbag on 9/05/2019 per the initial recall notice. The airbag light subsequently came back on after installation. When I returned it to the same dealer, they told me it was not related to the recall and that I’d have to pay to get it fixed. I took my vehicle to another certified mechanic for a second opinion. That mechanic determined it is a defect in the recall replacement airbag mechanism installed or the installation itself and advises me to take it back to the recall servicer dealer. Priority of Springfield has refused to honor the recall or acknowledge the defective equipment or improper installation on the 9/05/19 recall and remedy the defective recall equipment or service warranty they performed. The defective airbag replacement installed by the recall dealer Priority of Springfield is defective, inoperable and must be replaced or installation corrected OR be provided new equipment and installation at no charge per the 11/15/19 Safety Recall E04 - For Areas of High Absolute Humidity - UPDATE . I was told by NHTSA when I called to request my vehicle be added to the subsequent recall list for replacement again. It is not in the best interest of consumer safety that owners should be forced to bear the cost of replacing defective recall replacement airbags or Re installation of recall replacement airbags improperly or negligently installed by authorized Toyota dealers. Additionally, my vehicle is subject to Safety Recall E04 - For Areas of High Absolute Humidity - UPDATE published 11/15/2019 applicable to owners of vehicles originally sold in, or currently/previously registered in, areas of High Absolute Humidity, including Alabama and Georgia, both states in which my car was previously registered. I need NHTSA assistance in obtaining compliance by a local Toyota dealer in honoring this recall update pertinent to my vehicle. I took my vehicle for the airbag recall. When the technician gave me my car back I noticed the airbag warning light was still on. The technician said the warning airbag light is something else but he could not say what. Please add additional recalls to fix passenger airbag. But he said “the light was on before the recall” and I would have to pay to find out what the warning is for. I waited 2 hours for the recall work to be finished and when I entered my car the warning light was still on. This vehicle has not been in an accident. This situation I read in the reviews online is happening to this car and many complaints. I feel unsafe and I think all possible recalls should be put in place for this to be taken care of by Toyota. It is dangerous and it is a liability. Please help me get this resolved with AutoNation Toyota in Winter Park. WHICH BASICALLY MEANS I HAVE TO RISK MY LIFE UNTIL THEN . I AM THEN BEING TOLD I WON'T GET A LOAN VEHICLE. AND THAT I WON'T BE REIMBURSED FOR THE EXPENSE OF BRINGING THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP . I AM BEING FORCED TO MISS WORK BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE A VEHICLE NOW . WHICH IS ALL COSTING ME A LOT OF MONEY FOR SOMETHING THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AT NO COST TO ME.
