Recalls and investigations

  1. Structure, body, hood, hinge and attachmentsJul 3, 2017

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2011-2016 Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner vehicles equipped with accessory hood scoops installed by SET or SET dealers. The adhesive attaching the hood scoop may weaken, allowing the hood scoop to detach from the vehicle.

If the hood scoop detaches, it may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

SET will notify owners, and dealers will mechanically fasten the scoop to the hood, free of charge. The recall began on September 1, 2017. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-954-429-2000. SET's number for this recall is SET17B.

  2. EquipmentDec 30, 2014

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, RAV4, Scion FRS, and XB vehicles. The affected vehicles may have accessories installed by SET, such as running boards or other items, that were incorrectly installed. The accessory attaching fasteners were not tightened with the proper torque, possibly causing the accessory to detach from the vehicle.

Accessories that detach from a vehicle may result in a vehicle crash and/or personal injury.

SET will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and tighten the affected bolts, free of charge. The recall began February 23, 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET's number for this recall is SET-14B.

  3. Equipment, other, labelsAug 4, 2014

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2008-2014 FJ Cruiser and Tacoma vehicles equipped with accessory wheels and tires installed by Toyota or dealers prior to the vehicle's first sale. The affected vehicles may list incorrect spare tire size and/or cold tire inflation information on the tire placard. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars."

If the spare tire is inflated to the incorrect pressure provided on the placard, tire failure may occur while it is being driven on, increasing the risk of a crash.

For the involved vehicles, overlay stickers to correct the tire placard will either be mailed to owners or provided to dealers for placement over the incorrect information on the placard. The recall is expected to begin in September 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

  4. EngineNov 7, 2013

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Tacoma vehicles manufactured July 1, 2013, through October 11, 2013. The engines of the affected vehicles contain valve springs that may break over time.

If the valve springs break, the engine could fail and stall while the vehicle is being driven, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the valve springs, free of charge. The recall began on November 27, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

I took my vehicle in to the dealer where I always have it serviced, and asked them to do a front end alignment, since it pulls slightly and I noticed a little uneven tire wear. The mechanic said the front suspension is too rusted to align. I took the vehicle to a tire shop recommended by the dealer service advisor, and they said it is extremely rusted and sprayed some penetrating oil on it. I posted some pictures online in a Tacoma forum and everyone thought the rust was excessive, especially for a southern California vehicle where the roads aren't salted. I am the original owner. Based on what I read in online Tacoma forums, excessive frame rust was a well documented problem for earlier years There is excessive rust and corrosion on the front frame, suspension and steering, preventing proper steering alignment as normal maintenance. The problem was originally identified by the dealer last month during a routine 5,000 mile oil change service; they never notified me about a problem in any previous service, and the problem was independently confirmed by a tire shop when I tried to have them perform a front wheel alignment. There are no warnings or symptoms, and the need for a front end alignment is due to normal wear and tear

  2. Steering, Suspension, Nov 17, 2021, crash

While driving on the freeway, the steering wheel began to shake vigorously, then the right front wheel came completely off the truck. The ball joints snapped off causing a wreck. My truck slid into the side of a big rig. Luckily nobody was hurt, but the failed ball joints were the cause of the accident in my opinion. I also have the dash cam video from the big rig.

PASSENGER SIDE REAR LEAF SPRING SNAPPED/BROKE. PREVIOUS YEARS HAVE ALREADY BEEN RECALLED. WHEN I CALLED AROUND TO GET QUOTES FROM PARTS PLACES, EVERYONE KNOWS OF THIS ISSUE ALREADY.

REAR LEAF SUSPENSION ON TACOMA TRG 4 DOOR CAUSING EXCESSIVE HI-WAY BOUNCE. IN WINTER CONDITIONS THE REAR END WOULD BOUNCE AND REPOSITION THE REAR END CAUSING SWAYING OF VEHICLE ON TURNS. THE INTERNAL CAB AND BOX VIBRATION MAY BE THE CATALYST FOR THE FRAME FAILURES IDENTIFIED IN PRIOR RECALLS? COMBINED WITH THE DRIVE SHAFT VIBRATION ISSUES AT HIGH SPEED HI-WAY TRAVEL THE REAR TIRES OF THE VEHICLE ARE CONSTANTLY DEVELOPING FLAT SPOTS AND REQUIRE EXCESSIVE BALANCING TO AVOID ADDED REAR END VIBRATION. MY VEHICLE HAS 55,000KM (ABOUT 30,000 MILES) ON IT AND I AM ON SECOND SET OF TIRES AS A RESULT.

WAITING AT STOP LIGHT, WHEN LIGHT TURNED GREEN PROCEEDED INTO INTERSECTION. AT THAT TIME A MINIVAN STRUCK THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR (90 DEGREES) OF MY 2014 TOYOTA TACOMA. ...UPDATED 05/11/15 *BF THE MINIVAN WAS TRAVELING 40 MILES PER HOUR AND DID NOT APPLY BRAKES (NO SKIDDING) WHEN IT HIT THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. THE AIRBAGS ON THE MINIVAN DEPLOYED...THE CURTAIN AND SIDE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY ON MY 2014 TOYOTA TRUCK AND THE ACCIDENT WAS A DIRECT IMPACT TO THE TWO SENSORS THAT DEPLOY THE AIRBAGS ON THE DRIVER SIDE. THE SAFETY SECTION OF THE TOYOTA OWNERS MANUAL STATES 3300 LB. VEHICLE TRAVELING 12-18 MILES PER HOUR WILL DEPLOY THE CURTAIN AND SIDE AIRBAGS. I HAVE FILED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA ON MARCH 9, 2015 REGARDING THE SAFETY CONCERN. TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE HAS RETRIEVED BLACK BOX DATA FROM THE TRUCK AND SENT ME A COURTESY COPY OF THE DATA ON MARCH 19, 2015. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY ANALYSIS FEEDBACK FROM TOYOTA INDICATING THE TRUCK IS SAFE TO DRIVE. MY 2014 TOYOTA TACOMA WHEN DRIVING ON THE FWY OVER 60 MPH HAS VIBRATION AND STEERING WHEEL SHAKE,DEALER HAS REPLACED TIRES, RE-ALIGNED AND ROAD FORCE BALANCE ALL WHEELS AND PROBLEM STILL PERSIST. VEHICLE IS NOW AT 5000 MILES AND BEING BOUGHT BACK AFTER ARBITRATION, OH IT TOOK 2 TACOMA'S WITH SAME ISSUE AND 2/1/2 YEARS TO GET TO THIS POINT. *TR

  8. Suspension, Power train, Structure, Sep 5, 2014

WE WERE DRIVING HOME AFTER THE PURCHASE OF THE TRUCK. THERE WAS SEVERE VIBRATION INSIDE THE CAB AND IT FELT LIKE THE DRIVESHAFT WAS GOING TO FALL OUT. WE HAVE HAD BACK TO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THIS ISSUE AND HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE BY THE DEALER AND 2 OTHER REPRESENTATIVES FROM TOYOTA. THE DEALER HAS CHANGED DIFFERENT COMPONENTS ON THE SUSPENSION AND MOTOR MOUNTS, NO CHANGE. TIRES HAVE BEEN BALANCED, RE-BALANCED AND REPLACED NO CHANGE. THE DRIVE SHAFT WAS TRUED AND BALANCED, NO CHANGE. THE DRIVESHAFT WAS REPLACED, NO CHANGE. WE TRIED TO WORK WITHIN THE SYSTEM AND BROUGHT OUR CONCERNS TO TOYOTA REPEATEDLY, WE EVEN COMPLETED THE ARBITRATION PROCESS ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THE VIBRATION IS NORMAL AND A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE TACOMA. THIS DEFECT IS HUGE CONCERN FOR US, THE VIBRATION HAS CONTINUED TO GET WORSE AND OUR GREATEST FEAR IS THAT A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE DRIVE LINE WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, CAUSING INJURY TO US AND OTHERS OR POSSIBLY SOMEBODY'S DEATH. AFTER NEARLY 10 VISITS TO THE DEALER, TIRE COMPANIES, DRIVE LINE SPECIALISTS AND REPEATED CALLS TO TOYOTA CORP, WE HAVE RUN OUT OF OPTIONS. WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE THE TACOMA, AND WE CERTAINLY DON'T WANT ANYBODY ELSE DRIVING IT OR ANOTHER TACOMA WITH THIS ISSUE.. *TR
