Recalls and investigations

  1. Steering, columnJan 29, 2025

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Tacoma, Lexus RX350, 2023-2024 NX250, and NX350 vehicles that may have been incorrectly repaired under previous NHTSA recall number 23V-480. An electrical connection inside the steering column's spiral cable assembly may be insufficiently welded, causing the connection to separate and deactivate the driver's air bag. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

A deactivated driver's air bag will not deploy as intended, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

Dealers will inspect and replace the spiral cable assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 17, 2025. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 25TA02. Lexus' number for this recall is 25LA02.

  2. Power train, axle assemblyFeb 27, 2024

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturer (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Tacoma vehicles. The axle shaft sub-assembly may separate from the axle housing due to debris causing improperly secured fasteners.

Axle shaft separation can cause a loss of vehicle stability and brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect the rear axle assembly, tighten the axle retaining nuts as necessary, and repair or replace any damaged components, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 17, 2024. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 24TB05 and 24TA05.

  4. Child seat, vehicle latch anchorJul 21, 2022

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Tacoma vehicles. One or more of the individual welds in the upper child seat anchors may be insufficient. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage System."

An insufficient weld may prevent the child seat from being anchored properly, allowing the seat to move during a sudden stop or crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers will inspect the upper child seat anchors and reweld the child seat anchors, as necessary. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 02, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 22TB09/ 22TA09.

On XXX I was driving on [XXX] at about 70mph, when the rear drivers side window on a 2023 Toyota tacoma crew cab shattered suddenly. If someone had been sitting in the backseat when this occurred they could have been injured. The door panel itself was damaged from the tiny shards of glass. It was a dangerous situation as glass was most likely showering the vehicles behind me as this occurred. This vehicle only had 22,200 miles on it at the time and was a stock vehicle. No modifications were added. I had all the windows closed and the AC and recirculating air was on at 2 bars. It was about 8:30 at night when this happened. When I was able to get off the freeway and look at what happened, the glass was totally gone from the window. There was lots of glass on the door panel & well below that, a little behind the drivers seat on the floor close to the window and a little behind where the seat leaves a gap (when the seat is folded down), close to the window that blew out. There was no glass further into the vehicle, which if something had hit the window from outside, I would think the glass would have been further inside. I found more small glass pieces in the bed of my truck (6’ bed). This was a very scary situation and I didn’t do anything to cause it. A more high strung person might have reacted badly to this sudden boom and caused an accident at high speed on the highway. I have heard that similar things have happened to other drivers of certain models of toyota from 2020 - 2026. The vehicle is still under warranty and I took it to Toyota but they refused to repair it under the warranty. I am taking it to a repair shop tomorrow to get an estimate for my insurance. There was no warning prior to this occurring. It was a shock. A child in a rear seat in this situation could have sustained injury. The door panel had slices in it and the fabric is torn. 2. Air bags, Other or unspecified, Apr 21, 2026, crash

Air Bags (Driver and Passenger Curtain Airbags) no other airbags deployed. Been in repair since 3/8/26. Currently 4/21/26. Insurance already sent Body Shop money. Parts on National Backorder and Manufacturer Switch has not been determined yet by Toyota. Truck will not be released back to me until the repair is completed per email. I need adequate transportation provided to continue going to and from work. My insurance has maxed its coverage and cannot extend. I should not be out of pocket more than I already am while waiting on a part that is not in my control. Accident: I hydroplaned and ended in a ditch after going over a T-Intersection. Air bags went off and vehicle was drivable after. Submitted a claim to insurance and here we are.

61/2 INCH SCREEN WENT BLANK on start up. Did not reappear until I got home and stopped and restarted car engine. Have on occasions there is no tire pressure showing when i checked that screen.

Exploded sunroof with no apparent debris hitting it. No vehicles around and clear sky’s. Dealer said that something most have hit it and suggested I use comprehensive part of insurance. The assembly and slide was damaged while trying to clear glass. First estimate is $4,165. Reports that even though windshield was not damaged, this also needs replaced and recalibrated. Sounds strange to replace a windshield when there is no damage to it. Upwards break suggest explosion and not hit with debris.

2023 Tacoma TRD Off-Road engine shut off and the High transmission fluid temperature warning popped up. Toyota Dealer did not find any error codes. The incident did not happen again for about a month.

  6. Steering, Other or unspecified, Engine, Apr 21, 2024

When starting the truck and warming up a minute or so and then putting in reverse to back out or forward to pull into a carport, idling in gear with your foot only on the brake, the engines surges/revs up with just the slight turn of the steering wheel causing an unintended speed increase. I believe that this could cause a minor accident. It does not appear to be caused by the engine having a fast idle when cold as the idle drops when you shift into a gear. What appears to be happening is the ECU over compensates for the slight strain caused by the power steering pump when you turn the wheel. My carport is narrow and does not align exactly with the driveway, you have to jog left a foot or two and then right to pull in or back out. At the second service visit on 12/12/23 the dealer then checked and observed this behavior and reported "This is normal operation and directly related to power steering pump activation when wheel is turned in any direction" The vehicle was purchased new last May and currently has 3,995 miles on it. I think it probably had this problem from new but I had mostly just pulled straight in and out of the driveway until the fall when it was mostly parked in the carport as it was not being driven as regularly. I don't think it does it as bad when fully warmed up which takes quite a while for this engine.

The camera is horrible. Very gritty and grainy I took it to the dealership they agreed. Tried replacing but it is still bad. I previously owned a 2020 Rav 4 and the camera was very crisp and clear. Camera should be just as good if not better for a truck. They have more blind spots. This has been an issue since I purchased the vehicle in December 2023 which is only about 5 months.

Well there’s a recall for potential axle separation, but they say there’s no remedy, and they explain in the description what the dealership will do wondering why it will take until the end of April to start resolving the issue

2023 Toyota Tacoma's doors are not holding in the open position on a 10 degree pitch of our driveway, slamming shut on the legs of the driver. Passenger side doors are holding open fine, but the driver side doors are closing on me in the driveway. When I took it to the Toyota dealership, I am told that this perfectly fine. Meanwhile, we have never had this problem with any of our other vehicles, since we've lived in this home from 2005. Can you please tell me what is the pitch that the doors are required to hold by law? The dealership is of no help, and my left leg is constantly covered in bruises. This has been happening since I bought the car in late May.

Over the past several months, I have encountered the Vehicle Stability Control system engaging approximately 6 times when cornering and braking on dry pavement. It is a startling event that I feel causes a hazard. If I encountered a problem while this was happening, I am not sure I could control the vehicle. I have taken the truck to the dealer three times. The first time they turned the rear drums, stating that was the cause of the vibration I reported. After it happened again and took it back a few weeks later, they replaced the rear brakes and both axles. When it happened again, I was able to record the event and noticed the VSC system light flash on the dashboard when it occurred. The dealer then reported that this was a normal characteristic of the vehicle. Additionally, the dealer installed a 2 inch lift on the truck prior to the sale. I have researched Tacoma forums and found others reporting similar incidents. The solutions including resetting the VSC system to calibrate for the lift, replacing the speed sensors, or replacing the wiring to the speed sensors. Some noted that if the wiring was not disconnected when the lift was installed but instead stretched, that could damage the wires. I asked the dealer to investigate and they declined. I then contacted Toyota headquarters, and they also declined.
