Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorJul 1, 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Dealers will replace the left and right side RRAB modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 18, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available. Phase I owner notification letters were mailed on May 5, 2022. Phase II owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on May 31, 2022. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. This recall supersedes NHTSA recall number 20V-736. GM's number for this recall is N202324251.

  2. Seat belts, frontApr 8, 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.

Representative owner complaints: power train

147 reports, newest first. Show all

  1. Power train, Engine, Sep 15, 2026

I am filing this complaint regarding a serious engine lifter/Active Fuel Management (AFM) failure in my 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The vehicle experienced a lifter failure that caused significant engine problems and created a potential safety concern while driving back from shopping: loss of power, engine misfire, severe shaking, ticking, check-engine light, stalling, inability to maintain speed, etc. The vehicle had approximately 200k miles at the time of the failure. The vehicle was inspected by a local mechanic, which diagnosed the problem as collapsed/failed lifter. The repair required/will cost approx. 3k or more estimated My concern is that this does not appear to be an isolated failure. Other owners of 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trucks equipped with GM's Active Fuel Management system have reported lifter failures, including failures resulting in engine damage and sudden loss of engine power or propulsion. A sudden lifter or related engine failure can create a significant safety hazard, particularly when it occurs at highway speeds, while merging into traffic, crossing an intersection, or in another situation where the driver depends upon the engine to maintain acceleration and vehicle speed. I am reporting this in hopes that GM can be held accountable as they knew about these defective lifters but did nothing but hide it.

  2. Power train, Aug 28, 2026

January of last year, I was driving, coming off the highway, my engine came on and the system send to shutdown immediatly. I was close enough to my machanic, upon inspection, the AFM System failed at only 76,622 miles. This is part of the building issues with this value lifter problem I wanted to document it with the NHTSA as you are actively opening case for this ongoing issue with GM. i am hoping that a class action law suit will hopfully gain traction. this was a know issue, i was outside of standard warrenty, I was forced to replace the engine out of my own pocket to avoid having a truck worth almost nothing. I will bring this up with GM corporate also, reciept uploaded. Millions of 2014-present trucks and SUVs, while federal investigations specifically target nearly 878,000 to 1 million newer vehicles (2019–2026). GM should be helad accountable

  3. Power train, Jul 26, 2026

Transmission shuttered while driving on the freeway at 65 mph, the rpm dial indicator show high and my speed dropped to 40 mph. The transmission fluid was burnt and the torque converter was replaced

  4. Power train, Jul 17, 2026

Vehicle transmission repaired at 77,000 along with a new torque converter. Torque converter and transmission both failed again at 115,000 miles. GMC currently replacing the 3rd torque converter with 130,000 miles. I have spent over $14,000 on 2 transmissions and 3 torque converters on a vehicle I've owned for 6 years.

  5. Power train, Jul 5, 2026

At 144k I had to replace the passenger lifters because cylender 8 (linked to AFM) was stuck. I got that repaired. At 147k I had to get my passenger side lifters replaced again. 2 months later at about 152k I had to replace drivers side lifters. At this point 152k ive had all lifters replaced. Passenger side twice. Now at 157k my bottom end is bad. I was driving and boom no power. That could of been bad. Ive spent so god damn much money on this truck due to the AFM. Its ridiculous. Now I have to spend 8k on a new engine. Ive spent a total of 12k in repairs to this truck. There has to be something done to compensate. Because of your guyses shitty engineering im going into debt. Its insane

  6. Power train, Jun 24, 2026

While driving at highway cruising speeds, the vehicle began showing abnormal RPM fluctuation/surging at steady speed. The RPM would repeatedly move up and down even while maintaining a constant speed, including when cruise control was used. There were no warning lights or dashboard messages at the time the symptoms first appeared. The suspected failure is the torque converter/torque converter clutch in the automatic transmission. After diagnosis, I was advised that the torque converter failure contaminated the transmission fluid/internal transmission components, and that the transmission now requires replacement. The failed transmission/related components may be available for inspection upon request, depending on repair timing. This condition created a safety concern because the drivetrain was not operating normally at highway speeds, causing inconsistent power delivery and concern that the transmission could slip, overheat, fail further, or leave the vehicle unable to maintain speed in traffic. A sudden loss of propulsion or worsening transmission failure could increase the risk of a crash. The problem has been diagnosed by a transmission repair facility. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. No crash occurred. No injuries occurred. No warning lamps appeared before the failure. The first noticeable symptom was the RPM flutter/surging at steady highway cruising speed. The exact internal cause is unknown, but the best assessment is torque converter/torque converter clutch failure resulting in contamination and failure of the transmission.

  7. Power train, May 19, 2026

I purchased this vehicle brand new. From day one I have had constant transmission related issues that make it feel unsafe and unreliable. When it was still under the factory warranty it was brought back to dealer multiple times. Each time I was told it's a normal characteristic of that transmission or that a simple fluid flush would fix it. It was flushed a couple of times and it would "help" for a short while. Software for the transmission control module was updated by dealer. Nothing that was done ever actually fixed the issues. The transmission bucks, jerks, clunks when up & down shifting. Lunges forward when almost to a complete stop. Shudders at higher speeds above 45-50 mph. Occasionally if I slow down from cruising speed and press accelerator to speed back up, it doesn't accelerate because it won't shift down from the higher gear it was in.

  8. Power train, May 19, 2026

When slowing down, just before coming to a complete stop, the transmission will downshift, clunk and the vehicle will jump forward, powering through the brake pressure that's already applied, to the point I have almost collided with the vehicle in front of me. This incident has occurred numerous times over the years since vehicle was purchased new.

  9. Power train, May 6, 2026

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado LD Crew. The contact stated that while driving and going up hill, the vehicle will not accelerate over 60 mph. when the vehicle goes down hill the RPMs rapidly increase. When driving on a straight road, the vehicle hesitated to move forward. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis and it was not able to be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 145,000.

  10. Suspension, Power train, Engine, Apr 8, 2026

Sold vehicle with full knowledge that its was not safe to be driven the dealership/owner didn’t follow state safety regulations I could have been hurts well as innocent people on the roads and highways if the motor would have messed up or something underneath the vehicle would have malfunction and broken

  11. Power train, Dec 20, 2025

After years of driving like a grandma, my transmission unexpectedly failed while travelling down the freeway at 70mph. There were no warning signs, no vibrations, and I changed my transmission fluid at the dealer-recommended intervals. Huge bummer, really. I use my truck for work, and because of the time of year, it is unlikely that I'll be able to get it repaired for a few weeks. Certainly not going to help my bank account either, since a new transmission from Chevrolet is $4,800 before labor and other parts.

  12. Power train, Dec 20, 2025

I was driving on a busy street with a speed limit of around 45 mph and my torque converter failed causing my transmission to fail and my truck to become disabled in the middle of a busy road. It blocked traffic causing a potential danger to surrounding motorists and required assistance to be moved to a nearby parkin lot and later to be towed to the Chevrolet Dealership. The dealership confirmed that the transmission had failed. I subsequently took it to a specialist transmission shop that dismantled it an indicated that the torque converter had failed (a known problem with this year and model transmission) and that the failure had led to catastrophic damage to the transmission. There were no warning signs other than a couple of hard shifts just prior to failure. I was lucky that this occurred on a dry level street and not on a narrow mountain pass while pulling a trailer where the results could have been much different.

  13. Power train, Nov 21, 2025

For years I have taken my truck in to see why it is grinding when shifting and was told it was nothing. Now it got so bad my truck completely lost the ability to accelerate at all. The records I had at James Corlew have been lost since they changed to a new owner. I have spent over 7000 to get this fixed

  14. Power train, Oct 27, 2025

Transmission failing when going up hill almost causing a wreck and leaving me stranded. Was inspected by dealership and they rebuilt the transmission problem keeps occurring. No warning lamps. Have spoken with other Chevy Silverado of same year and style and many have had the same issue.

  15. Power train, Jul 13, 2025

Transmission just won’t last in this truck and it’s dangerous when you have kids in it

  16. Power train, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Jun 27, 2025

2015 5.3 with afm related failure / lifter collapse still within warranty by mileage (5 yrs, 100,000 miles I think), out by years in service, was diagnosed by a GM authorized dealership by a GM Master Certified Technician and under the supervision of service manager. Issue Description On 6/18/2025, the dealership diagnosed a failure in the #7 lifter due to afm / afm related failure / lifter collapse. The vehicle’s engine, diagnosed at approximately 58,000 miles and minimal idle hours. While the GM Master technician is confident that only one side of lifters require immediate replacement, there is a possibility of damage to the camshaft lobe, which cannot be inspected without significant additional labor. There is also a concern about potential metal contamination in the oil, which could further impact the engine’s performance. I also have many documented repair orders indicating my concern with the transmissions performance.

  17. Power train, Jun 18, 2025

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that after driving on the highway and driving uphill, the rear differential started grabbing. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was taken to another local dealer, Oliverio Buick (1110 Laurel Hill Rd., McDonald, PA 15057); who determined that the rear differential fluid needed to be drained and refilled. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000. The VIN was not available.

  18. Power train, Engine, May 11, 2025

My engine shakes when shifting into the V4 from the V6 and my transmission shifts hard as well as a dieseling affect when shifting from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. Rear main seal was replaced 1000 miles ago and now has to be replaced again due to the rapid shaking of the V4 cylinder deactivation(which was a terrible way to make the reliable 4.3 Lt engine unreliable)

  19. Power train, Electrical system, Engine, May 9, 2025

Experienced a problem with electrical theft deterrent system and it shut the vehicle off while driving. I tried to start the vehicle and nothing happened except it said theft deterrent system. I took the key out tried starting again and it turned over immediately. The dash said theft deterrent and I clicked dismiss but the dash icon (a car with a lock light) remained on. I then drove 11 miles home. I turned on my directional proceeded to brake upon approaching my driveway. As I attempted to turn the steering wheel the vehicle completely shut off. The info system stating theft deterrent active. I lost power steering and brakes. I needed to press the brakes with great force because the vehicle was headed towards the sidewalk and a road sign. Steering was virtually unresponsive. Vehicle stopped as the tires reached the curb and approximately 1 ft from the sign. Placed vehicle in park and started it back up. Pulled into my driveway and the info system stated I need to roll the drivers window down and the up to deactivate. I have checked all battery connections are intact and tight. The battery, starter and alternator were all checked and fine. I have no idea what caused this dangerous behavior. The incident happened on MA Rt. 126 988 S. Main st Bellingham MA 02019

  20. Power train, Apr 6, 2025

The valve body on my transmission failed and needs to be repaired again. It was already replaced by gm, 1k miles later it failed again.

  21. Power train, Mar 10, 2025

Transmission failure at 133,000 miles due to faulty tourque converter … which was replaced AFTER … i repeat AFTER… replacing all components that failed because of the faulty torque converter … so now its showing same symptoms as did before failed … only 30,000 since repairs

  22. Power train, Jan 1, 2025

The torque converter with the 6L80 transmission went and destroyed the transmission in my 2015 Silverado. Which is going to cost me thousands of dollars to fix. With the 10's of thousands of people affected, Chevy should of done a recall on the torque converter and/or transmission. There were no signs/symptoms, the truck started shaking like I was driving over rumble strips, no check engine light. I was able to get it to a mechanic immediately and it sits there unusable at this time.

  23. Power train, Dec 30, 2024

Transmission shudder and hits hard at times.

  24. Power train, Dec 6, 2024

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, there was an abnormal sound under the contact’s feet, and the vehicle started shaking abnormally. The contact stated that the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and restarted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the cooler lines and transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,341.

  25. Power train, Oct 29, 2024

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle briefly shuddered before losing motive power. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder of the roadway, where the failure persisted. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the transmission required a flush and fluid replacement. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 132,000.
