Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorJul 1, 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Dealers will replace the left and right side RRAB modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 18, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available. Phase I owner notification letters were mailed on May 5, 2022. Phase II owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on May 31, 2022. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. This recall supersedes NHTSA recall number 20V-736. GM's number for this recall is N202324251.

  2. Seat belts, frontApr 8, 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.

  3. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorNov 25, 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator.

If the end cap separates from the inflator, the compressed gas will escape and the end cap can be propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the RRAB modules on the left and/or right side, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on December 22, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. Note: GM filed a new recall, number 21V-504 that supersedes this recall. All vehicles previously recalled under 20V-736 will now be repaired under the new recall number 21V-504. GM's numbers for this recall are N202309680, N202309681, and N202309682.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, wheel speed sensor/tone ringOct 24, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  5. Service brakes, hydraulic, power assist, vacuumSep 6, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.

As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

  6. Steering, electric power assist systemSep 7, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade vehicles. Electric power steering (EPS) assist may be lost momentarily, followed by a sudden return of EPS assist.

If EPS assist is lost and then suddenly returns, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the EPS module software, free of charge. The recall began October 12, 2018. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18289.

  7. Service brakes, hydraulic, pedals and linkagesAug 30, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, 1500 Crew Cab Special Service, Tahoe Police Pursuit/Special Service, GMC Sierra 2500, and 3500 vehicles. The brake pedal pivot nut may loosen, causing the brake pedal to be loose or inoperative.

If the brake pedal becomes loose or inoperative, the driver may be unable to stop the vehicle by using the brake pedal. Additionally, a loose pedal may also interfere with the accelerator pedal. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will add adhesive to the nut and reinstall the nut with increased tightness, free of charge. The recall began October 3, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18278. Note: The vehicles in this recall need this additional remedy despite being covered by recall 16V069 for brake pedal loosening.

  8. Seat belts, frontMay 3, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Tahoe Police Pursuit and Special-Service vehicles. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

If the pretensioner cable becomes fatigued or breaks, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the pretensioner cable and seat side-shield, free of charge. The recall began June 19, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18156.

  9. Air bags, frontalJul 10, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. 2. Other or unspecified, Jul 14, 2016

I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE EXCESSIVE SHAKING/VIBRATION IN THIS 2015 CHEVY SILVERADO AND, THUS FAR, GM CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE DEALERSHIP HAVE NO RESOLUTION IN SIGHT. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN OCCURING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (MOST NOTABLE ABOVE 73 MPH) SINCE THE TRUCK WAS PURCHASED AUG 2015. AS THEY CAN'T IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM, I CAN'T BE SURE THE ORIGIN IS OR IS NOT A SAFETY-REATED CONCERN. THE DEALERSHIP HAS BALANCED, RE-BALANCED, ROTATED, AND ROAD PRESSURE TESTED TIRES TO NO AVAIL. EVEN TRIED A NEW SET OF TIRES OFF OF A 2016 MODEL TO NO AVAIL. AS THIS MATTER CONTINUES AND DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE TIRE-RELATED, I'M WORRIED THAT THE ISSUE MAY BE IN THE SUSPENSION AND WILL, AT SOME POINT, CAUSE OR CREATE A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE.

  3. Other or unspecified, Jun 8, 2016

THE TRUCK HAS A CONSTANT VIBRATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS HAVE VERIFIED THE PROBLEM, GM FIELD ENGINEERS VERIFIED THERE IS AN ISSUE, AND THE ENGINEER RECOMMENDED THE DEALER CHANGE REAR END PARTS, STILL NO FIX. TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS FELT ROADFORCE BALANCING THE TIRES WOULD HELP; IT HAS NOT. THE TRUCK ALSO MAKES A CHIRPING NOISE WHEN TRANSITIONING FROM 4 CYLINDERS BACK TO 8 CYLINDERS.

KIDS LOCKED IN MY TRUCK, IN MY DRIVEWAY AFTER REMOTE START. (REPRODUCIBLE) MY KIDS GOT LOCKED IN MY CAR A FEW WEEKS AGO WHERE THE UNLOCK BUTTON WASN'T WORKING, I THOUGHT IT WAS A FLUKE UNTIL IT HAPPENED TO ME AGAIN. I WAS GETTING READY TO TAKE MY 15 YEAR OLD SON TO SCHOOL. I UNLOCKED THE CAR SO HE COULD PUT HIS STUFF IN, AND SHORTLY AFTER I REMOTE STARTED THE CAR. MY OLDER SON WAS IN THE CAR AT THE TIME I REMOTE STARTED THE CAR, WHILE I CONTINUED TO GET MY YOUNGER 4 YEAR OLD READY IN THE HOUSE. WHEN I CAME BACK TO THE CAR WITH MY SON, MY HANDS WERE FULL AND I ASKED MY SON TO UNLOCK THE CAR. HE PRESSED THE UNLOCK BUTTON AND NOTHING HAPPENED, AND THE DOOR REMAINED LOCKED WITH HIM INSIDE. HE COULD NOT UNLOCK THE CAR DOORS TO GET OUT! (I DO HAVE VIDEO OF THIS AND CAN REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM IT AT ANY TIME) LET'S UNDERSTAND THE SEVERITY OF THIS ISSUE: WHAT IF HE GOT SICK IN THE CAR, OR HAD TO USE THE BATHROOM, OR MEDICAL EMERGENCY? WHAT IF MY SON WAS EATING BREAKFAST AND CHOKED ON SOMETHING WHILE I WAS INSIDE FOR 5-10 MINUTES GETTING MY YOUNGER SON READY? COMBO 4 PIN AND 7 PIN TRAILER CONNECTION IS UPSIDE DOWN. THIS MAY RESULT IN THE LOSS OF TRAILER LIGHTS AND BRAKES. WITH CONNECTION UPSIDE DOWN THE 7 PIN DOOR WILL NOT HOLD PLUG IN TIGHTLY AND CAUSE THE BRAKE AND GROUND PINS TO POSSIBLE DISCONNECT. LOOSING BRAKES WHILE PULLING A HEAVING LOAD IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. PLUG NEEDS TO BE INVERTED TO ENSURE THE DOOR LATCH HOLDS THE PLUG AT THE HIGH POINT AND WEIGHT OF THE CORD HOLDS THE PLUG IN TIGHTLY DEALER IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND GM ENGINEER IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE.. NEITHER HAS YET TO FIX. SAME DESIGN EXISTS ON 2013 AND 2014 SILVERADO'S 1500, 2500 AND 3500.

WHEN DRIVING A MESSAGE ON MY INFORMATION CENTER POPS UP WHICH STATES THAT TAKING MY EYES OFF THE ROAD CAN CAUSE A ACCIDENT,ECT. THIS MAKES ME TAKE MY EYES OFF THE ROAD TO SEE IT AND AGAIN TO DELETE IT. SO THIS IS A HAZZARD. GM SAID THERE IS NOTHING IN THE OWNERS MANUAL ABOUT IT , AND ENGINEERING THINKS THAT IT HAPPENS WHEN I TOUCH A BUTTON ON THE INSTURMENT PANEL WHEN DRIVING. BUT IT HAPPENS TO APPEAR WHEN IM DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND HAVE NOT TOUCHED ANY CONTROL BUTTON. , THIS IS A SERIOUS DISTRACTION. SINCE I CANNOT DUPLICATE IT BECAUSE IT HAPPENS AT RANDOM, WHEN IT DOES OCCUR AGAIN I WILL TAKE A PICTURE OF IT. THE MESSAGE WILL NOT CANCEL ON ITS OWN AND BLOCKES EVERYTHING ON THE MESSAGE CENTER UNTIL I MANUALLY SHUT IT OFF

I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2015 SILVERADEO ON 7/24/15 AND AT ABOUT 700 MILES OR SO I NOTICED A BAD VIBRATION AS THE TRUCK WAS IN MOTION, TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER CAUSE I WAS VERY UPSET IT BEING AN $56,000.00 TRUCK AND ALL. THEY WANTED ME TO LEAVE THE TRUCK OVERNIGHT AND DID NOT OFFER ANY VEHICLE TO DRIVE SO I DID NOT LEAVE IT WITH THEM. SO I TOOK THE TRUCK TO RATFIELD TIRE AND HAD THE TIRE'S BALANCED,ALL 4 TIRE'S WERE OUT OF BALANCE, WHICH I PAID FOR OUT OF POCKET MYSELF NOT GM.... THIS DIDNOT FIX THE PROBLEM OF THE SEVERE VIBRATION GOING DOWN THE ROAD. I THEN TOOK THE TRUCK TO ANOTHER DEALER FOR THE VIBRATION, THEY TEST DROVE IT AND CONFIRMED THE VIBRATION, DID A ROAD FORCE BALANCE ON ALL 4 WHEELS, THEN REPLACED ALL TIRE'S, THIS ALSO HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM,THE TRUCK IS STILL VIBRATING, THE ENTIRE SEAT JUST SHAKES, I AM PRESENTLY WAITING ON ANOTHER APPOINTMENT WITH DEALER. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME HIMSELF AFTER REPLACING ALL 4 TIRE'S THAT IT FELT LIKE A BALANCE ISSUE INSIDE THE MOTOR WHICH THERE IS NO FIX, NOW THAT IS CRAZY...I FELL THAT THIS TRUCK SHOULD BE REPLACED OR MY MONEY BACK ENTIRELY.THE TRUCK ONLY HAS A LITTLE OVER 2000 MILES CAUSE IT MAKES ME SICK TO DRIVE IT....

I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2015 CHEVY SILVERADO AND IN THE FIRST WEEK I HAD IT, WHILE DRIVING, THE TRUCK JUST SIMPLY COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. DEALER CLAIMS THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS AND AFTER KEEPING TRUCK FOR DAYS STATED COULD NOT FIND ANY ISSUES. ABOUT ONE MONTH LATER REMOTES NOT WORKING AND TRUCK WARNING THAT EMERGENCY BRAKE IS ON EVEN THOUGH IT WAS RELEASED. COULD NOT GET TO REGISTER THAT EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS OFF AND WHILE DRIVING NONE OF THE TURN SIGNALS WERE WORKING AS TO TRUCK WARNING TO PULL OVER DUE TO VEHICLE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS ON. I HAVE ONLY MADE ONE PAYMENT ON THIS NEW VEHICLE AND TRUCK HAS ALREADY BEEN IN SHOP 2X .I NEED YOUR HELP, PLEASE AS DEALER NOT HELPING ME AND I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THIS TRUCK. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT TURNING OF OR ANYTHING ELSE AS TO BEING A BRAND NEW VEHICLE. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO SPEAK WITH SEVERAL MANAGERS AND ONE JUST STATED TO ME" THAT IS WHY YOU HAVE WARRANTY AND JUST KEEP EYE ON IT." SINCE ALL THIS I HAVE SEARCHED ON THE INTERNET, AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED WITH OTHER SILVERADOS. . ED BOZART CHEVROLETT STILL CLAIMS NO KNOWLEDGE OF THIS. PLEASE HELP ME. I FEEL THIS IS POTENTIAL ACCIDENT ISSUE. THE FIRST ISSUED HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ON CRAIG ROAD WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN REALLY BAD AS THIS IS A 45 MPH ROAD, LUCKILY IT WAS A WEEKEND AND NOT BUSY. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. SPENDING OVER $40,000 ON THIS TRUCK NOT EXPECTING TO FEEL UNSAFE WHILE DRIVING.

  10. Other or unspecified, Jul 29, 2015

WHEN DRIVING 68MPH OR ABOVE THE WHOLE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE VIBRATES LIKE A WHEEL IS OUT OF BALANCE. I WAS TOLD BY A CHEVY DEALER THAT THE DRIVE SHAFT IS WOBBLING & THAT'S CAUSING THE VIBRATION. AND GM SAYS IT'S NORMAL.

  11. Power train, Other or unspecified, Jul 23, 2015

I PURCHASED A NEW 2015 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500HD DURAMAX CREW CAB LT FROM AUTO NATION OF PEMBROKE PINES FLORIDA AND AT ABOUT A WEEK OR TWO OF DRIVING IT I STARTED TO NOTICE A BUMP/CLUNK FROM THE REAR OF THE TRUCK JUST AS I WOULD COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. IT ALSO DOES IT JUST APON A STRONG ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 500 MILES ON IT WHEN I STARTED TO NOTICE THIS. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FOR THE FIRST OIL CHANGE AT ABOUT 4K MILES AND TOLD THE SERVICE GUY WHAT WAS GOING ON. HE SAID THEY WOULD TEST DRIVE IT. WHEN I PICKED IT UP HE SAID THEY COULD FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I THINK IT'S THE SLIP YOKE STICKING AND NEEDS TO BE LUBRICATED OR REPLACED. SOME OF THE OLDER TRUCK HAD THIS ISSUE.

  12. Power train, Other or unspecified, Engine, Jul 1, 2015

THIS IS THE 10TH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED, AND 3RD TIME THE VEHICLE HAS ENTERED THE SERVICE CENTER. OWN A 2015 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 CREW CAB Z71, AND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, IT DOES NOT TURN OVER, INDICATING THAT THERE IS A THEFT DETERRENT ISSUE. THE FIRST TIME THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE OR ERROR CODE. THE SECOND TIME SEVERAL ERROR CODES WERE PRESENT, WHICH THE DEALER RESET. THIS APPEARED TO FIX THE ISSUE, UNTIL 1 MONTH LATER THE ISSUE PRESENTED ITSELF AGAIN. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY WITH THE DEALER ON IT'S THIRD REPAIR ATTEMPT. THIS CAN BE VERY UNSAFE FOR A VEHICLE SINCE IN AN EMERGENCY NEED THE VEHICLE COULD BE INCAPABLE OF BEING DRIVEN.

MY NAME IS [XXX] AND I AM THE OWNER OF THE 2015 CHEVROLET SILVERADO LT THAT I LEASED ON JANUARY 31, 2015 FROM HUNTINGTON CHEVROLET LOCATED AT 370 OAKWOOD RD, HUNTINGTON STATION, NY 11746 (877) 415-8697. I NOTICED IN MARCH WHEN THE WEATHER STARTED GETTING WARMER THAT THE AIR CONDITIONING WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE INTO NEW ROCHELLE CHEVROLET LOCATED AT 291 MAIN ST, NEW ROCHELLE, NY 10801 (914) 730-9960 TO HAVE THE A/C SERVICED, AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THERE WAS NO FREON. AFTER HAVING THE FREON PUT INTO THE A/C SYSTEM I NOTICED VERY STRONG FUMES COMING INTO THE CABIN. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT BACK INTO NEW ROCHELLE CHEVROLET TWICE TO HAVE THE PROBLEM SOLVED. I HAVE THE APPROPRIATE PAPERWORK TO VALIDATE THE SERVICE. THE 2 SERVICES AT NEW ROCHELLE DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE SMELL IS UNBEARABLE AND POSSIBLY TOXIC, AND STILL COMING INTO THE CABIN AS OF TODAY. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
