Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorSep 24, 2026

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500, GMC Sierra 2500/3500 vehicles, and 2016-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. The left-side or right-side roof rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

A detached end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape and project the end cap or fragments of the inflator into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers will replace both RRAB modules, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 9, 2026. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N262569920. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on September 24, 2026.

  2. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorJul 1, 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Dealers will replace the left and right side RRAB modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 18, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available. Phase I owner notification letters were mailed on May 5, 2022. Phase II owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on May 31, 2022. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. 3. Seat belts, frontApr 8, 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.

  4. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorNov 25, 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator.

If the end cap separates from the inflator, the compressed gas will escape and the end cap can be propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the RRAB modules on the left and/or right side, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on December 22, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. Note: GM filed a new recall, number 21V-504 that supersedes this recall. 5. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, wheel speed sensor/tone ringOct 24, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  9. Air bags, frontalJul 10, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. 1. Power train, Other or unspecified, Engine, Aug 28, 2026

I had noticed that my a/c was not cooling due to refrigerant loss. went to dealer and was told that I needed a new condenser and that my original was out of warranty & no recall was in effect. I was charged $1600.00 after the replacement was installed. I asked to see my original condenser & was directed behind the shop & low & behold there was a pile of 30 condensers exactly identical to mine

  2. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Service brakes, Jul 13, 2026, crash

Vehicle suffered a failure cascade of the brake booster vacuum pump system. During a low-speed bumper collision on July 4 and a boat ramp slide, the pedal triggered abnormal ABS-like pulsing as the computer tried to hydraulically compensate for dropping vacuum pressure. This resulted in truck front bumper damage and boat trailer fender damage. On July 10, total failure occurred in a drive-thru, rendering the pedal rock-hard and sopping mear impossible. All marked parts and logs are available for inspection. Onboard diagnostic data reveals the electronic brake control module has driven continuously without a master clear for 22,665 miles, locking the last system initialization to 78,468 miles. This continuous data loop proves code C0299-00 was actively visible in the history log during the subsequent dealer service visits. Instead of performing the hardware pump remedy under Recall N192268490 (NHTSA 19V650). At the Jan 24 dealer visit (78,482 mi), dealer applied a software update and charged out-of-pocket fees to clear symptoms. They also ignored subsequent communication regarding the billing discrepancy. Technicians completely neglected the history logs despite explicit complaints regarding low-speed ABS sensations, trailer brake messages, park assist, and brake assist warnings. The 2026 dealers (and 2024) falsified multipoint inspections stating brakes required NO service until after winter. Jan '26 dealer delayed further diagnostics until June '26. May '26 dealer ignored texts regarding a crooked steering wheel and unstable tracking after alignment service. The truck was intentionally misdiagnosed as functional to avoid the warranty period repair. This unaddressed mechanical failure caused a destructive system cascade requiring replacement of the vacuum pump, oil-contaminated vacuum lines lines, oil-saturated booster, master cylinder, glazed pads, warped rotors, fluid flush, tires from module drag, alongside the resulting bumper and trailer property damage.

Doors automatically unlock while driving or parked and not running.

  4. Air bags, Seat belts, Other or unspecified, Mar 19, 2026, crash

I was a front seat passenger in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and was properly wearing my seatbelt at the time of the incident. The vehicle struck a deer, and during the collision, the passenger seatbelt failed to properly restrain me. I was thrown forward and struck the windshield. The seatbelt did not appear to lock or tighten as expected during impact. It is unknown whether the seatbelt pretensioner or airbag system activated properly. This created a serious safety risk, as the seatbelt did not perform its intended function of restraining the occupant during a crash. The vehicle was declared a total loss following the incident and is no longer available for inspection. The incident was documented through insurance and/or police reports. There were no known warning lights or prior indications of a problem with the seatbelt system before the crash. This failure resulted in occupant injury risk due to lack of proper restraint during the collision.

Unknown, my transmission gave up on me but there was no warning light and I almost got in a car accident due to the transmission 8l90

  9. Power train, Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Mar 11, 2025

Jerking of 1-2 gears. Also in 5-6. Has not been inspected thoroughly by dealer. Was told “it’s just the way these vehicles are.” Merging onto oncoming traffic, I fear for my safety. No warning lights and the jerking/rumble strip feeling is becoming more common than when purchased.

  10. Steering, Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Sep 27, 2024

This has happened multiple times, most of the time going at a low mph while turning (I.e into a driveway). However, it has happened driving through a residential neighborhood as I’m going straight or turning. My truck will completely power off and I will lose access to the steering. The steering wheel will lock up, any systems (radio, A/C, etc. that were on will go off). Multiple time I have had my battery/alternator checked after these instances and my battery/alternator passes with flying colors. Luckily each time it has happened I haven’t been in traffic, but if another car was around or expecting me to make a full turn, it could have run into me while my truck just shut down in the middle of the turn. I had to restart the whole car to be able to move out of the way. These instances have happened intermittently and seemingly at random. When I took it to a dealer, they didn’t know what it was and couldn’t reproduce it. Insurance, police or other have not inspected it - again it happens intermittently. There haven’t been warning lamps prior to these instances, but when it happens it says stabilitrak warning or another message on the screen as it shuts down completely.

  11. Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Jul 29, 2024

The engine light displayed "Engine Power Is Reduced". This has occurred three times, twice in 2023 and again recently in 2024. We have taken the vehicle to a qualified shop on each occasion. The second time we took the truck to the shop, after keeping it for almost two weeks, it was returned to us, and according to the mechanic, the engine light would not come on with test driving and he stated there was not a problem. Although the engine runs roughly, we are able to drive it at low speeds. Currently, the engine light comes on intermittently. This past few weeks, it happened again while traveling 65 mph on a busy freeway. The engine slowed down and I was able to get it up to a max of 30 mph until I could get to a frontage road. We made it back to our destination at 30 - 40mph using flashers at some points because the engine felt as if it was going to stall. This issue could result in a rear end collision and serious injury. Although the engine runs roughly, we are able to drive it at low speeds. Currently, the engine light comes on intermittently. We will be returning the truck for service. However, we are not confident that the problem will be resolved.

  12. Structure, Other or unspecified, Service brakes, Jul 21, 2024

Unknown. There is times when parking my truck. I press on the brake paddle and it sound and feels like my truck jerks at first before it brakes. This has been going on for almost the 8 years I’ve own the truck. Also I have only owned the truck for 8 years and my paint is already peeling off. It doesn’t have anything to do with the brakes. I just had my truck serviced the brakes and drums. It still does it.

  13. Other or unspecified, Jul 9, 2024

The condenser in my A/C system failed. This is a known issue that numerous GM owners experience.

  14. Other or unspecified, Dec 20, 2023

My 2016 Silverado automatic vehicle has approximately 88,000 miles and the transmission needs replaced. It will not shift gears. This transmission should not need replaced after only 88,000 miles.

  15. Other or unspecified, Service brakes, Engine, Oct 21, 2023

The truck has had its major service to replace all fluids at 70,000 miles. One of the services was a notable vibration and shaking through the steering wheel and on the brakes. Higher the speed the more the vibration. When brakes are applied the vibration gets worse. The vehicles brakes and rotors were checked and good. The mechanic said that the brake pump was slightly loose and it was tightened. It did slightly ease the vibration, but less that a few days later it is back to the same vibrating. The brake power feels weak and when I need to brake I feel like the vehicle is not stopping. I have owner a 2014 Silverado before this and did not have this issue. I took it back to the dealer and they did an alignment which did not help.

  16. Other or unspecified, Aug 29, 2023

I [XXX] purchased a vehicle by trade-in from Augusta Mitsubishi on Tuesday 6/20/2023. Upon further review of the contract, I noticed some things that were not right. 1. They had the vehicle I traded as a Chrysler 200 but I gave them a 2001 GMC Sierra. 2. On the retail purchase agreement, the color of the truck I purchased is gray but it is black. 3. It seems as if the numbers were manipulated to suit the deal. I also had the truck diagnosed and they found a number of issues such as the brakes and rotors were worn. The biggest issue was that the lug studs had been cut which is a major safety issue. In light of everything in this letter, I feel that the dealership should be held accountable, which is why I'm asking that they pay off the truck and send me the title, refund my down payment, and pay for the repair cost. 18. Power train, Other or unspecified, Engine, Apr 26, 2023

My truck has a shudder/ shake while accelerating as well as rough shifts here and there. If certain speeds are maintained, the shudder is constant. This causes uneven speeds, noises, and distractions. I fear one day the transmission will fully give out while driving and I will crash. My vehicle is available for inspection. The problem is easily reproduced as it happens every time I drive. As well, the truck was recently at an independent service center and the problem was confirmed by an associate. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer as they told me it would cost me $180 just for a diagnostic which they will need my car for two days. There are no current dash lights on. This is a known issue and Chevrolet should be held accountable.

  19. Power train, Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Apr 6, 2023

I was driving in a state Highway when without warning in traffic my truck stopped driving but the engine was still going. I have been to the dealer and complained about electronics like the radio just ceasing to work and the display unit as well as the erratic shift pattern of the transmission 3 times . Thankfully no one was injured and it was late night/ early morning hours, in moderate traffic we might have been injured. Upon looking at blogs and forums online and I am not the only one with these issues, it is a very costly repair. I was told by the mechanic he has another vehicle like mine for the same issue and apparently it’s related to the torque converter (in his words “most are problematic and inadequate from the factory” and the way the engine runs on less cylinders which in turn destroyed the valve body and pump in the transmission. The repair will end up costing me over $6000 now. I really just don’t want anyone injured as well as taken advantage of.

Truck was revving while driving down the highway, would jump up and down gears while driving down the highway, started making a high pitched whirring noise, and when pulling out of my driveway onto a busy street, stopped moving in the middle of the street. The truck wouldn't go into any gear whether it was Reverse, Drive, Neutral or any of the Manual gears. Two police officers pushed my vehicle off of the busy road onto a side street. No lights came on the dashboard to warn of any problems. I have had the truck towed to a transmission shop for repairs. Research shows that there are many complaints about this issue in this particle vehicle. Please research this problem.

Within a few minutes the button popped open again, again I pushed it down. This continued off and on until I got to my destination. I Googled my problem and finally found an answer that fit my issue and corrected the problem. Apparently the FOB button with certain FOB's sticks and makes intermittent contact with the open car door button. Removing the FOB battery solves this issue. Risk, car door can unlock at any moment resulting in a safety problem. Documented by Google searches and reports, and my own experience but my issue has not been inspected by anyone. I'm sure if I replace the battery in my FOB the issue will continue. No warning lights, just the sound of the door unlocking while driving or stationary.
