Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorSep 24, 2026

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500, GMC Sierra 2500/3500 vehicles, and 2016-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. The left-side or right-side roof rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

A detached end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape and project the end cap or fragments of the inflator into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers will replace both RRAB modules, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 9, 2026. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N262569920. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on September 24, 2026.

  2. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, wheel speed sensor/tone ringOct 24, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  3. Service brakes, hydraulic, power assist, vacuumSep 6, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.

As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

  4. Child seat, tether, connector/clipAug 3, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. The owner's manual for the affected vehicles may be missing instructions on how to use the tether anchorage and child restraint anchorage systems. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems."

If the instructions are missing from the owner's manual, the child seat may be installed incorrectly and not be properly secured, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will provide a corrected insert for the owners manual, free of charge. The recall began on September 25, 2017. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM's number for this recall is 17307.

  5. Air bags, frontalJul 10, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. NHTSA Safety Complaint To: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Regarding: Vehicle Safety Hazard / Fraudulent Repairs on 2017 Chevrolet Silverado VIN: [XXX] To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to file an emergency vehicle safety complaint regarding a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, VIN [XXX], purchased on XXX. Huntley Ford performed unauthorized, fraudulent, and unsafe repairs that resulted in the vehicle being returned to me as an active fire hazard, directly violating federal motor vehicle safety expectations. Huntley Ford forced a salvage engine onto the vehicle, stripped me of my repair rights, and intentionally cleared dashboard error codes to mask severe, systemic mechanical defects. Following an engine replacement, transmission replacement, and catalytic converter replacement, I took the vehicle to Sunrise Chevrolet for inspection. The technician at Sunrise Chevrolet discovered that the vehicle was actively burning fluid onto the alternator. The technician explicitly stated that the vehicle was a fire hazard and that there was an emergency safety brake problem, and brakes. Huntley Ford knowingly delivered a structurally compromised and life-threatening vehicle. I request a full investigation into Huntley Ford’s repair safety practices to protect the public from further hazardous non-compliance. I have a 16 page paper trail Word document letter proving Huntley Ford committed auto fraud, has practiced illegal practices, lied, sold us a truck that they cleared codes, after only a few months full transmission, c. converter replacement, engine, and did not fix the truck properly still, returned it back to us when they knew it was not ok, lied, cleared codes, we brought our own scanner, they lied again, said the codes just needed to be cleared. When we notified [XXX], Huntley Ford's repair manager, he did nothing. Sincerely, [XXX]/[XXX] ________________________________________ INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  2. Power train, Jul 23, 2026

Vehicle would not shift through gears while driving. Torque converter shudder. Dealer found excessive metal in trans pan. Had to replace transmission. Vehicle had 107, 000 miles. Almost $5700 to replace transmission.

  3. Power train, Jul 22, 2026

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as intended and the vehicle lost power. The contact merged onto the right side of the road, turned off and restarted the vehicle and the vehicle worked as intended; however, after driving fifteen miles down the road, the failure persisted. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or dealer to be diagnosed. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. The transmission was replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 113,800.

  4. Power train, Jul 14, 2026

Torque converter clutch failed and sent metal chips through the transmission causing the transmission to fall and made the truck not drivable. The check engine light came on a few hours before the transmission finally gave out. The transmission would not shift out of first gear. We were on a family trip to [XXX] from [XXX] and this left us stranded with three kids in the truck on the side of the road. When I took the truck to the shop they asked several other transmission shops if they had seen this issue and they all confirmed they did with the same truck and the best case is to rebuild the transmission instead of replacing the just the torque converter clutch due to the amount of damage it did. 5. Power train, May 1, 2026

Transmission is hunting for gear when decelerating. Back and forth it tries to change gear. Just started. I have 64,000 miles on the truck. At 22,000 it started shuddering and the fluid was changed which corrected the issue then. At 53,000 the shudder returned and I paid the dealerdealership to replace the torque converter. Now 12,000 miles later I'm having a shifting issue. This Transmission seems to be problematic.

  6. Power train, May 1, 2026

A well known issue with the torque converter failing due to poor manufacturing and design. Allowing debris to enter the filter system due to the torque converter falling apart. Causing astronomical amounts in repair costs

  7. Power train, Mar 30, 2026

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While the contact was operating the vehicle, the vehicle came to a stop at a stop sign. While attempting to accelerate, the vehicle stalled and failed to move. The contact stated that the transmission failed to operate properly, and the vehicle was unable to shift into gear. The contact stated that the vehicle shut off with the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was unable to be restarted or moved from the roadway. An independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle at the residence and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

  8. Power train, Service brakes, Engine, Mar 29, 2026

I have had shifting issues with the transmission since 2 months into having this vehicle I have been reporting it to the dealership who has told me consistently that jerking grinding and loud noises are totally normal then the recall came out for these specific issues in the 2017 Silverados though my VIN is not listed but I still haven't always have had the very same problems stated in the recall

  9. Power train, Electrical system, Mar 10, 2026

Transmission failure at 120, 000 was replaced. Then factory thermostat went and then trickled down to the transmission. Got too hot and cooked the transmission. Come to find out it was also the radiator so that was replaced along with the thermostat and a second transmission. Put a transmission cooler on but still get very warm on the transaction fluid. Can't keep the temperature down in the summer while I'm towing. Trailer is well under the weight of the max capacity for the truck. And the latest problem I've had was to replace parts of the frame because that was rotted and beyond inspectable. Now I'm 14,000 in the negative with no reprieve. What is GM going to do for me as far as reimbursement? Cuz I still owe a little over $9,000 on the truck. This is ridiculous and I believe I'm going to another brand of truck when I can get out from underneath this one. I've been a Chevy owner my entire life and this is how you guys react to all your mistakes.

  10. Power train, Other or unspecified, Engine, Mar 9, 2026

I am submitting a complaint regarding my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT. My truck currently has approximately 80,000 miles, and it has recently been diagnosed by a Chevrolet dealership as needing a complete transmission replacement. This vehicle has been lightly driven and very well maintained, and I rarely drive it. Because of this, I am extremely concerned and disappointed that such a major mechanical component has failed at such relatively low mileage. A transmission should reasonably last well beyond 80,000 miles under normal driving conditions. The dealership informed me that the entire transmission needs to be replaced, which is a very costly repair. Given the mileage and the way the vehicle has been used, I believe this may indicate a defect or premature failure rather than normal wear and tear. I am requesting that General Motors review this situation and consider goodwill assistance or coverage for the repair. I purchased this vehicle with the expectation that it would be reliable for many more miles, and this issue has significantly affected my confidence in the vehicle. I would appreciate a review of my case and any assistance GM can provide toward resolving this problem

  11. Power train, Feb 25, 2026

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and running, the transmission remained in neutral(N). There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that while attempting to move the gear shifter, the transmission remained in neutral(N). The vehicle was able to restart; however, the failure recurred. The contact was able to drive the vehicle after several attempts. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission had failed and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,200.

  12. Power train, Engine, Feb 24, 2026

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle was making an abnormal ticking sound while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and it was determined that the lifters were bent and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The contact stated that while driving at 30 MPH, the transmission skipped while shifting to a gear, and the vehicle jolted and jerked. The failure had progressively worsened, and the vehicle was making an abnormal high-pitch sound at start-up. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with transmission component failure, and the dealer informed the contact that it would be cost-effective to replace the entire transmission. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

  13. Power train, Engine, Feb 12, 2026

    1. The vehicle's transmission does not operate consistently and safely. 2. At times, the transmission will not engage, and this has placed my family in very dangerous situations when changing lanes. 3. At red lights, at times, the transmission will not engage to drive. 4. When slowing in traffic at times , the transmission will not adjust to the slower speed, although the operator is applying the brakes. Then, without warning, the transmission will engage the higher speed, almost launching the vehicle forward suddenly, potentially into another vehicle or person, depending on the situation.

Hard jerking while driving clunks while driving shifts rough really bad when driving changes gears its an automatic stalls at lights runs rough jumps forward has no power at times brakes fail when stopping lunges when breaking Dealership and manufacture know about this Its been to dealership over 9 times same problem

  15. Power train, Jan 23, 2026

approximately, on or about [XXX], while driving our Chev Silverado, VIN as noted [XXX] ) started to experience transmission issues when i started from a stop sign and it started hesitating upon acceleration, jerking (gears not meshing correctly every time i had to stop). This included delayed engagement of gears, roughing shifting, slight slipping of gears, at times i could smell a burning like smell, (No leaks noticed on transmission anywhere and no warning lights coming on to warn about Transmission problems). On Jan 23rd, 2026, i took it to B&F automotive had mechanic check fluid level and do drive test with me. Fluid found to be good. I could hear a slight sound like high pitch sound at times, only last few seconds randomly). Mechanic suggested i put some fuel system cleaner in and 90 Octane to hopefully clear the system. dealer also suggested this just as a suggestion though they found no apparent issues during prior service oil change I just had dealer do a 27-point inspection with oil change and they did not notice issues. Since purchase of truck in 2019, from dealer, all services have been done only by dealer (Woodland Motors). we had bought extending service warranty with vehicle. According to dealer, it just expired Dec 2025. I currently have appointment to have dealer inspect it on Monday Jan 25th, 2026, at 1pm concerning our complaint of drive train issues. Current mileage is approx. 63, 060 miles. on advise of mechanic, i called dealer right away and set the above appoint. I explained to dealer rep that this will cause me financial hardship as i am [XXX]. i do maintain a maintenance file with all service records since purchase. 16. Power train, Engine, Jan 19, 2026

Bought the truck brand new, after 20,000 miles started vibrating. Took it to the dealership said it was the transmission shutters. They changed the fluid. At 50,000 miles did it again, they said GM came out with a thicker fluid, but it in there. Was fine for a while. At around 135,000 miles getting the vibration again. Also, at 140,000 miles cylinder 8 misfiring. Took it in and they tore it apart and said cylinder 4 and 8 lifter failure. Damage to cam and bent rods. Had to replace all lifters, cam and rods. Cost over $10,500, but had BG warranty used that additive every oil change so BG covered $4,000. I went by the oil life indicator on the truck to determine when I needed to change it, but apparently for engine for life you have to change it more frequently at 6,000 miles, so they wouldn’t cover that part.

  17. Power train, Jan 16, 2026

I am having the exact transmission issue for this truck that has been recalled, but when I call to get it serviced, I am told "there isn't any unrepaired recalls. This issue is persistent and unresolved. Please look into this and potentially recall the transmission issue. This truck has constant shifting troubles form 1st to 2nd with shuddering.

  18. Power train, Jan 10, 2026

While driving on Highway 35 in Austin, Texas, my vehicle's transmission unexpectedly failed, which placed myself and my passengers in a precarious situation. The vehicle became inoperable on the side of the highway, necessitating that my passengers and I manually push it while traffic was actively flowing. This mechanical issue occurred without any prior indication. Through my subsequent research, I have observed that this particular problem appears to be a recurring concern with this model of vehicle.

  19. Power train, Dec 15, 2025

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while stopped at a traffic light, after the signal turned green, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle only revved but failed to properly respond. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence and later towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

  20. Power train, Nov 26, 2025

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 25-35 MPH from a complete stop at a traffic light, the RPMs increased to 4,000 before the transmission shifted into gear. The contact was able to drive the vehicle. The contact immediately pulled into a relative's driveway and parked the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a certified mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the torque converter had failed. The torque converter was scheduled to be replaced. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that recalls were issued by the NHTSA. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 71,000. The VIN was not available.

  22. Power train, Sep 14, 2025

Transmission went out while driving the vehicle and left it stuck in the middle of the intersection we had to push it though traffic. It had no forward movement. Would only drive in reverse. No warning or anything just made a clunk and wouldn't move any further.

  23. Power train, Sep 6, 2025

The transmission started to shutter at 94,000 miles. Gwatney Chevrolet quoted $7,500 for a new transmission replacement. Had an in independent shop quote $4,670 for a reman transmission. I have only towed 2,000 lbs at a time in the past. This is the 1st time towing a 6,000lbs camper. It was only driven 800 miles with the camper in tow. The vehicle only has less than 95,000 miles and my transmission is shuttering and has metal shavings in the fluid. Needing a replacement at this time frame and mileage is ridiculous.

  24. Power train, Sep 5, 2025

Transmission failure, I had to have the transmission replaced and no longer have it for inspection. I was on a one lane highway in Franconia NH with guardrails on each side, and no phone reception. Traffic was trying to get by me including tractor trailers, we were horrified and couldn't get out. these 6L80 transmission in the Chevy Silverado, come to find out, have been failing for a long time. 2 of my friends lost there's also, all of us were between 100k-115K miles. The transmission shop I went to, and others I called said they can't believe there was never a recall, they get many of them. Zero warning, just quit. I take exception care of my vehicles regarding maintenance, always early, these are to expensive to repair when your on a retired budget.

  25. Power train, Engine, Aug 21, 2025

Premature engine failure specifically the lifters failed and the push rod failed causing the vehicle to become unusable and stranding the operator. Also transmission surges and slips causing unsafe driving conditions
