Recalls and investigations

  1. Engine and engine cooling, engine, hard parts internal/mechanicalApr 24, 2025

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 18, 2025. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N252494000.

  2. Service brakes, hydraulic, brake fluid low warning, lampSep 12, 2024

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Escalade ESV vehicles. The electronic brake control module software may fail to display a warning light when a loss of brake fluid occurs. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.

The Electronic Brake Control Module (eBCM) software will be updated through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 25, 2024. Owners can contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N242447990.

  3. Exterior lighting, lighting control module, softwareDec 8, 2022

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Cadillac CT4 and CT5; 2021-2023 Buick Envision; and 2022-2023 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The daytime running lights (DRLs) may not deactivate when the headlights are on. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

DRLs that do not deactivate as intended may result in a glare, reducing visibility, and increasing the risk of a crash.

The body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2023. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N222386380. Truck will hard shift and bang into gear while driving. This usually happens when slowing then starting up again. happens at all speeds on highway, so hard it lunges me forward. condition getting worse. random times my windshield wipers will just come on ( I do not have rain sensors) the switch is in the off position and wipers will just come on and I have to turn them on then turn them off to get them to stop.

The infotainment system is experiencing a freezing screen, audio spikes, and constant restarts.

  3. Power train, Other or unspecified, Jul 6, 2026

While shifting my vehicle from Park, a "Service Transmission" warning message appeared on the dashboard. The warning would illuminate and then disappear, but the vehicle continued to shift into the other gears. At the time the issue occurred, my truck had only 47,000 miles. I brought it to Blasius Chevrolet in [XXX] on XXX, for diagnosis. The dealership determined that the Transmission Control Assembly (Part # XXX) had failed and needed to be replaced. I was informed that this repair was not covered under the powertrain warranty because Chevrolet considers the Transmission Control Assembly to be excluded from powertrain coverage, and my basic warranty had already expired. I was quoted more than $900 for parts and labor. Initially, I was told the replacement part would arrive within a few days. Later, the technician stated that other Chevrolet dealerships had the part in stock. However, after contacting those dealerships, he was told they would not release their inventory. Chevrolet then advised that the part was on national backorder, with the earliest estimated availability of XXX. As a result, I have been without my truck for approximately one month, creating a significant hardship. After researching this issue, I found numerous reports from other Chevrolet owners experiencing the same failure involving the Transmission Control Assembly. The apparent frequency of these failures, combined with the nationwide backorder of the part, suggests this may be a widespread defect rather than normal wear and tear. I believe Chevrolet should either: Cover this repair under the powertrain warranty, as it directly affects the operation of the transmission, or Issue a recall or warranty extension if this is determined to be a common defect affecting vehicle safety and reliability. I am submitting this complaint because I am concerned that a failure of the Transmission Control Assembly could impact the safe operation of the vehicle. I have a complaint about GM and my 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ regarding the radio / infotainment system failure after attempting a recommended software update, and the resulting degradation of installed safety features. On 08 MAY 2026, my infotainment system indicated a software update was necessary, so I followed the directions to complete the update. When the update was complete, my infotainment screen said there was a failure and to take it to the dealership for repair. The entire infotainement system is inoperative. The soonest appointment I could make was for 18 MAY 2026. On 18 MAY 2026, I took my Silverado into the dealership where I have it serviced to address the failure of my infotainment system. My service advisor informed me that I would need a new radio and that these radios are on a national backorder list. My advisor informed me that they have other customers who are experiencing the same issue and have been waiting for the replacement radio since January 2026. My advisor informs me that there is no estimated time of resolution. This defect inhibits safety features such as; use of OnStar, Google and Apple Maps that provide travel advisory hazards, parking camera views, vehicle systems status. Thank you.

Had a vehicle update for my 2023 Chevrolet Silverado and now my Onstar Module is toast and no longer under warranty bc I have 37,000 miles. Many reports of this happening to 2023 models but no recalls for this. Why should I have to pay $1000.00 for a part that is failing in many vehicles of the same year.

  6. Other or unspecified, May 4, 2026

Onstar Module not working. Stop working in October of 2025 after a software update.

The Def guage does not work properly. After topping off with DEF the guage would not register being full. Also the guage would read over half full and within minutes I would receive a notification that the truck was going into limp mode due to be out of DEF. Happened several time while on a trip. Also truck went into limp mode while DEF was full.

  9. Other or unspecified, Service brakes, Feb 1, 2026

I am sending this email to report that my 2023 Chevrolet Silverado had its rear brakes lock up momentarily on consecutive days (1/13/26 & 1/14/26) driving 70-72 mph.  Each occurrence came on without warning and only lasted a brief moment, but locked up hard enough for my rear wheels to screech and slam me forward in the truck, thankfully there were no other vehicles near me. I took the truck to the dealership first thing in the morning on 1/15/26 to be informed later that day that the truck didn't show any codes.  The service department at my dealership contacted the TAC Dept. at GM and they determined that the problem was caused by the brake light wiring from my truck topper (that was after they asked if the customer had added any accessories to the truck).  I have had the topper for 3 years without any issues.  I reached out to the company that installed the topper and the owner said that GM is giving me the run around and trying to point the blame elsewhere. He himself has installed 100's of toppers and they follow the wiring instructions from Leer Toppers. He did a 30 second Google search and said [XXX] , the problem you have experienced is well documented online, GM knows what the problem is with your truck". My truck was at the dealership for 5 days before they released it to me, even after I told them that there are known and documented cases of their trucks experiencing momentary rear wheel lockups. I have called GM Customer Service twice and left messages regarding my truck and TAC # and haven't received a return call. I am fearful that when this happens again and if it does so in the wrong place at the wrong time the end of this story may be tragic.   If I was pulling a trailer, driving on ice or in rush hour traffic I can't imagine the outcome. GM knows they have a serious problem and they is comfortable in releasing a dangerous truck back onto the roads. On 1/24/26 I used the remote starter to warm up the truck and it started but within 3 minutes it shut off. The temperature was in the single digits. So I tried the remote again and it wouldn’t start. And the remote start hasn’t worked since and the check engine light is on. Two years ago when the brake module failed right before that recall the temperature was very cold that day too. Just two months ago the check engine light came on and that time the dealership said the battery failed . It also printed out a whole page of errors , at the dealership.

While driving the vehicle the tailgate came open by itself. I had left my house and when I arrived at my friend’s house to pick him up the tailgate was down. I closed the tailgate and while driving a driver honked their horn to alert me that something was wrong. When I pulled off the road the tailgate had come open for a second time.

  12. Other or unspecified, Dec 27, 2025

The vehicle 'turned off' while in motion at around 35-40 mph on a busy 5-lane major arterial road in the city on 12/21/2025 at around 0630-0700 hours. Driver (author of this report) was able to turn into a side road and stop. Message "Press start button" displayed on dash panel. Complying with this action led to a coughing start but vehicle could not be put into drive mode because a second message appeared saying "Conditions not safe for transfer". Eventually over next minute or two vehicle coughed up to a start again and was able to put into drive mode and drive to parking garage to safety. Driver was able to drive back about 3 hours later with no recurrence or new malfunction. No warning lights throughout the episode. My Chevrolet mobile app also did not display error messages. Vehicle was driven (without incident) and delivered to a Chevrolet dealer on 12/24/2025 for diagnostics and workup and is currently situated there.

Yesterday I was driving and the pickup truck put itself into neutral and died in the middle of the road and almost got rear ended with my kids in the car. The car would not start again and no codes were given.

  14. Other or unspecified, Engine, Nov 28, 2025

I was driving my vehicle when the check engine light came on and a message then came across the screen and stated the truck would no longer shift if I didn’t stop driving it. I took It immediately to Autonation Chevrolet Service on Nov 9. I received it back on 11/26 my service advisor said it passed inspection that no work was completed I needed to use high synthetic oil and filters for my truck to keep it going. This doesn’t sound correct when I’ve owned several Chevy/GMC trucks. I only have 33k miles on my truck and want the recall fixed. Please help me get this taken care of. GPS system behaves erratically. (Position jumps around). Phone gps very stable. While using navigation in the truck the jumping position causes the map to jump and swing also it lags behind missing turns etc. This is proving to more of a distraction making me look at the map longer. I tried dealership and they said it works while I have video evidence of its behavior. I will try another dealership but maybe thousands of others are having same issue and this help to force a fix.

OnStar Module needs to be replaced and of course the module died right after the warranty went out. After research come to find out this is an issue with all GMC and Chevy vehicles

  17. Other or unspecified, Oct 15, 2025

It burns a significant amount of oil. I had an oil consumption test completed with a GM dealership, they state it is in their guidelines of standard. It burns around 2 quarts of oil within 5000 miles, so between oil changes. The add oil alert popped up while I was driving down the highway. My truck has 33500 miles on it, it should not be normal for a new truck to burn that much oil. They will not check my engine to identify the cause because they state it is within their standards.

  18. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Back over prevention, Oct 15, 2025, crash

Sometime between backing into my parking spot at work, then backing into a parking spot at the dentist, My Tailgate released/lowered. When I backed in at the dentist, my back up camera seemed to malfunction, so I just used my mirrors. Apparently, the camera was just pointing at the ground. Sine you can't see your tailgate in the mirrors; I could not see that it hit the retaining wall at the back of the space.

  19. Other or unspecified, Oct 6, 2025

I was traveling when on my dash came up "software update available" so I looked at how to and said truck will need to be off for 15 minutes during software installation so I decided to wait until I got home from trip. So on the moring of October 2, 2025 did the software update in my driveway. Then in the afternoon needed to go somewhere and I saw the service engine warning symbol on dash. Went to where I needed to go, 4 miles from home. Then when I was finished headed home and on way home warning on dash came up, "Service Transmission Now Unable to Shift Soon". So I got home and made some phone calls and ended up taking truck into Polar Chevrolet, White Bear Lake, MN. Thursday before they closed. Friday October 3 got a call from Polar Chev and issue is "Gearshit control module", part number 86515985. But was told part was out of stock and could take 1 week or even upto 1 month for them to get part. Looking on internet did see that this warning has come on from other people right after they did the software update. Needless to say my estimate for repair is going to be somewhere form $900 - $1000. So now have to wait and see when they get part and if it is actually issue.

THIS TRUCK HAS A PROBLEM WHERE AT LOW SPEED WHILE TURNING LEFT THE ENGINE SURGES AND THE TRUCK SPEEDS TO 15 MILES AN HOUR UNLESS I JAM ON THE BRAKES . THIS STARTED JUST TURNING LEFT AND NOW ITS STARTING TO HAPPEN TURNING RIGHT . I HAD THIS TRUCK TO KOONS CHEVOLET TWO OR THREE TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT IT STILL PERSIST TO HAPPEN. I have had to replace 2 batteries due to the tailgate opening and shutting randomly even when parked, and ruining my batteries. You recalled the 1500 HD's for the same issue... but yet not this model when it's clearly happening to 1000's. I'd appreciate it being fixed

B- Driver Displayed Alert. a- BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE 62 MHP TOP SPEED. b- TRAILER BRAKES DISABLED SERVICE REQUIRED. c- SERVICE ESC. C- Concerned by alerts proceeded to exit highway, the breaks where unresponsive. This required pressing break pedal to the floor. It took over 400ft for the vehicle to come to a complete stop. Fortunately no other vehicles were on the exit ramp, a major accident was avoided. D- On 10/30/2024 took vehicle to Bomnin Chevrolet West Kendall and explained break failure and provided pictures of driver alert messages. E- On 11/1/2024, 3 days after, Bomnin Chevrolet West Kendall Technician communicated that vehicle was mechanically fine and were unable to duplicate the problem. I accepted the vehicle back with 5,901 miles of use. #2 A- On [XXX] vehicle sensors disabled breaks again while driving on Miami city street. B- Driver Digital Displayed flashed following Alert Messages. a- SERVICE TRAILER BREAK SYSTEM. b- SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL. c- SERVICE ESC. d- CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. C- Having experienced this back in October, I knew what to expect. Unresponsive breaks, fortunately on 2nd occasion I was driving slower on a city street and was able to coast to a stop. D- On 4/10/2025 took vehicle back to Bomnin Chevrolet West Kendall for the same problem, break failure. I once again explained to Technician what happened, showed them pictures of the Alert Messages. E- Vehicle as of today, 5/18/2025, remains at Bomnin Chevrolet West Kendall for a total of 39 days and is yet to be repaired. Given the severity/danger of defective break sensors defects there is “nonconformity” that under the Lemon Law is defined as a defect or condition that substantially impairs use , value, or safety of the vehicle. These 2 incidents make this vehicle unsafe for drivers, passengers, and general public in proximity. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Water Found in Rear Interior of Cab, Water Leak at Rear Sliding Window. I noticed water spots on the left and right sides of the headliner. I took it to a dealer (Malloy Chevy winchester Va), and the said it was a TSB put out on this problem and they would file a claim. The truck has 48000 miles and the bumper to bumper company denied the claim. Have the TSB didn't matter to them. Can you assist in any way with this?
