Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  2. Service brakes, hydraulic, foundation components, disc, caliperMar 23, 2016

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured December 9, 2015, to January 14, 2016. In the affected vehicles, the left front brake caliper may crack due to being made from an incorrect material.

A cracked brake caliper may lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front left brake caliper and depending on its casting date, replace it, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on May 12, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S16.

  3. Suspension, rearJul 27, 2015

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured June 12, 2015, to June 20, 2015. The affected vehicles may be equipped with rear lower control arms that may have been incorrectly heat treated. This may cause the rear lower control arm to fracture.

If the rear lower control arm fractures it may result in a change in ride height, loss of rear end stability, and reduced braking capabilities, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the lower control arms, free of charge. The recall began July 29, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R38. Note: This supersedes Recall No. 15V-407.

  4. Equipment, electrical, radio/tape deck/cd etc.Jul 23, 2015

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500, 2015 Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Dodge Challenger, 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, and Dodge Durango, and 2013-2015 Dodge Viper vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with radios that have software vulnerabilities that can allow third-party access to certain networked vehicle control systems.

Exploitation of the software vulnerability may result in unauthorized remote modification and control of certain vehicle systems, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify and mail affected owners a USB drive that includes a software update that eliminates the vulnerability, free of charge. Optionally, owners may download the update to their own USB drive from http://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/ or take their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for immediate installation. In an effort to mitigate the effects of this security vulnerability, Chrysler has had the wireless service provider close the open cellular connection to the vehicle that provided unauthorized access to the vehicle network. This measure may not have been implemented on all vehicles and does not address access by other means that will be remedied by the software update. The recall began on August 25, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R40.

Representative owner complaints

503 reports, newest first.

  1. Electrical system, Exterior lighting, Aug 19, 2024

Sections of LED brake light/race track light has stopped working due to water intrusion in rear panel. Back panel is not secured properly, allowing water to enter, corrode the harness and lights to fail. Due to this, the license plate harness & connectors are corroded as well. Replacing the tag lights will not fix the problem, you must replace the whole wiring harness for it to work again. The wiring harness is sold as one piece now by manufacturer due to this KNOWN issue, costing $600-$1000 to purchase and install. Manufacturer has stopped selling just the plate light plugs because they know the common issue with water damage, light failure and corrosion. The license plate lights are required by law to be working. Owners cannot continue replacing every year due to the manufacturers inadequate design. This impacts drivers with safety and on a legal level from law enforcement. There were no warning signals on my dash of this issue. Law enforcement has pulled me over for this issue and recommended speaking with the manufacturer.

  2. Other or unspecified, Aug 12, 2024

Driver's Active Head Restraint (AHR) deployed while driving the vehicle.

  3. Seats, Aug 5, 2024

Unknown, my active headrest deployed without an accident. I would think this could cause an accident when I was driving. Lucky it was the passenger headrest.

  4. Electrical system, Aug 2, 2024

Right headlight fuse will blow, then the blower motor for the front A/C goes out. Replaced in 2023, happened again in 2024

  5. Engine and engine cooling, Jul 31, 2024

The contact owns a 2015 Dodge Durango. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic and was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact stated that there was a recall for the failure; however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact researched online and became aware of NHTSA Action Number: 10239957 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the VIN was not included. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

  6. Seats, Jun 25, 2024

Active head restraint broke and popped open. The headrest are available for inspection.

  7. Other or unspecified, Jun 15, 2024

The rear bolt which holds the automatic lift for the rear hatch broke off and is stripped. The trunk door is no longer being supported by the arm and is quite heavy. Every mechanic is unable to address the issue and this seems to be very common among this model of the car. The broken bolt is flushed against the frame of the vehicle. Images of the issue are included. Here is a discussion post of consumers discussing this same issue for reference.. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  8. Engine, Apr 24, 2024

    1. Oil cap/oil cooler reservoir leaking oil and antifreeze on engine. I will be replacing soon and will keep defective part for your review. 2. Safety concern is that due to oil and coolant can pool up on top of engine, the liquids could catch on fire. This create high safety risk to my family and other people that may try to put out fire. 3. The leaking issue is well known to dealers and repair shops. Many on line leak issue noted. The original oil cooler reservoir base is made of plastic. Since the cooler is sitting right on top of pentastar 3.6 engine, the plastic base is exposed to severe heat and heat/temp cycles. The suspect cause of leaks points to plastic base warping creating seal leaks or stress cracks in housing. Part should be more a robust material like aluminum. 4. Leak was found recently April 17, 2024, by service tech during oil change. No oil or temp lights came on. Has not been reviewed by police, manuf, insurance. Cost to repair $800 to $1200.

  9. Seats, Apr 21, 2024

Passenger seat active head restraint deployed without warning. Vehicle was not running or involved in an accident at time of deployment.

  10. Other or unspecified, Apr 4, 2024

    Unknown

  11. Electrical system, Exterior lighting, Mar 12, 2024

The rear 'race track' tail lights fail to light or are dim in lower sections of the assembly installed on the rear tailgate. Water enters the assembly over time and collects in the lower sections of the assembly causing the installed LED's and circuitry in those sections to fail. This repair is not covered by the extended warranty and would cost drivers approx 800 to install a replacement which would also leak.

  12. Other or unspecified, Feb 20, 2024

The rear taillights are taking in water and causing the lights to go out. This appears to be a systemic issue with Dodge Durango's as based on the fact of the high number people indicating the same issue on Dodge Durango Facebook pages.

  13. Air bags, Feb 20, 2024

Air bag stating it needs serviced the light will come on periodically it is not present every-time vehicle is driven.

  14. Seats, Other or unspecified, Feb 3, 2024

Passenger side active headrest deployed without warning. No lights/ alarms on dash display.

  15. Exterior lighting, Jan 25, 2024

Rear gasket on tail light assembly is faulty and causes water to leak in to rear running light and the light fails and doesn't work anymore. I'm requesting an investigation or recall on the rear assembly to have them fixed or replaced for safety and uniformity. The OEM part number is 68453659AA

  16. Power train, Jan 22, 2024

Transmission, 845RE, showed moist casing and oil pan. Inspected and removed transmission to discover a stress fracture in top housing/casing of the transmission. Unable to repair or replace due to no replacements available through any supply source.

  17. Engine, Jan 22, 2024

Audible ticking noise from valve train. Upon further inspection a discovered a damaged roller follower. Cause of damage was the failure of the needle bearings within the roller follower

  18. Power train, Nov 27, 2023

The transmission shifts extremely hard from 1st to 2nd gear so hard it feels like you've been hit from behind. The jerk is so extreme I believe it could cause an accident. It is unsafe for dodge to leave this a problem. The problem is very well known a simple Google search shows there is alot of people with this problem. It also shifts hard from 6 to 5th gear and 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd gear not as extreme as 1st to 2nd but hard enough to say wtf was that. I've had it looked at twice and they always claim to not feel it which is more of we don't want to do the warranty work. The technician even said dodge doesn't want to do anything unless the transmission is just inoperable. This is horrible to deal with and something needs to be done asap.

  19. Engine, Nov 9, 2023

Oil Filter Housing Cracked resulting in a major oil leak . My vehicle just turned 120,000 miles this is the 2nd Durango I have owned that has developed the same issue. The first time it ended up with an engine knock this time I hope to have caught it soon enough

  20. Seats, Oct 29, 2023

The headrests deployed randomly even though there was no accident to cause it. This puts others at risk as it can potentially lead to minor head injuries if the driver and passenger are driving. Problem was never accessed by dealer or insurance, but other owners of Chrysler made products have reported this issue. There has been no warnings anywhere, just a mechanical issue in the headrest.

  21. Exterior lighting, Oct 14, 2023

The racetrack style light on the back of my vehicle has water buildup on the inside. It has started to burn out the light. The unit is still partially functional so it's not available for inspection. The left license plate light on my vehicle doesn't function due to the corrosion inside the connector as well. This is a safety risk due to other driver not being able to see my Vehicle clearly during night or other conditions. There were no warning indicators on the dash about this issue. The Vehicle has not been inspected by anyone other than myself.

  22. Exterior lighting, Oct 10, 2023

The rear back light in my dodge Durango went out on it own and I've seen multiple Durango with the same issue . I’ve attached example . Ive seen multiple cars with this same issue so there has be manufacturers issue

  23. Suspension, Vehicle speed control, Service brakes, Oct 6, 2023

Brakes front and rear suspension this suv has had rear struts put on within 2 months twice when coming to a stop it is hard to stop had front brakes rotors installed but when braking it continues for a minute then it stops I have had this suv checked and it's wearing brakes and rear end issues

  24. Seats, Oct 2, 2023

The contact owns a 2015 Dodge Durango. The contact stated while driving 15 MPH, the front passenger's seat headrest deployed inadvertently. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the front passenger's seat was unoccupied at the time of the failure. The dealer was notified of the failure and referred to the manufacturer for assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

  25. Seat belts, Oct 1, 2023

I had a car accident with my child and the front seat belt passenger side locked up and we ended up having to cut her out of the seat belt because it wouldn't unhook
