Recalls and investigations

  1. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.

  2. Power train, automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl)Jun 10, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

  3. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  4. Power train, automatic transmission, lever and linkage, floor shiftJul 16, 2018

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Ford Escape, and 2013-2016 Ford Fusion vehicles, equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. The recall began September 20, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S20. Note: Owners are directed to use the parking brake until the recall remedy repairs can be made.

  15. Engine and engine coolingDec 3, 2012

This is an update to a recently announced recall. Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through November 26, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines, as well as certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2012, through November 29, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. Coolant system leaks may cause the engines to overheat and leak flammable engine fluids.

If flammable engine fluids come in contact with the vehicle’s hot exhaust system, a vehicle fire could occur.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine for coolant system leaks and reprogram the vehicle’s powertrain control module and instrument cluster with an updated calibration and overheat strategy software. There will be no charge to owners for this service. Owners were recently notified to contact dealers to arrange for alternative transportation as Ford developed a remedy. Owners will be shortly receiving notifications to contact Ford dealers to schedule the free remedy repair. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

MY 2013 ESCAPE IS HAVING ALL OF THE ISSUES THAT ARE TALKED ABOUT IN THE RECALL OF 2014 ESCAPES REGARDING LOW ENGINE COOLANT CAUSING ENGINE FIRES. THE WATER PUMP HAS ALREADY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND NOW THE "LOW ENGINE COOLANT" WARNING COMES ON REPEATEDLY. WHY ARE 2013 ESCAPES NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ANNOUNCED IN MARCH?

  2. Engine, Apr 28, 2017

OUR ESCAPE DEVELOPED A CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD THAT IS ALLOWING COOLANT TO LEAK INTO THE ENGINE. WE PURCHASED IT USED LESS THAN TWO YEARS AGO. AT THE TIME IT HAD 55K MILES AND NO ACTIVE RECALLS. CURRENTLY THERE IS 65K MILES ON THE ESCAPE. MULTIPLE RECALLS FOR THIS ENGINE HAS BEEN ISSUED MANY HAVE WHICH RESULTED IN A SIMILAR ENGINE PROBLEM. SUPPOSEDLY FORD HAS PERFORMED THE RECALL WORK THIS OUR CAR, BUT THIS PROBLEM HAS COME UP. THEY WANT US TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR WORK EVEN THOUGH IT SEEMS LIKELY THAT IT'S RELATED TO RECALL REPAIRS THAT WERE NOT CORRECTLY COMPLETED. THE RECALLS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ENGINE ARE #13V583000, 12V551000, 12V431000. THE FIRST INVOLVES A CRACKED HEAD AND THE OTHER TWO INVOLVE LEAKING COOLANT (WE'VE LOST AN ENTIRE RESERVE TANK IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME). WHEN WE TOOK IT IN THE FIRST TIME TO HAVE IT CHECKED THEY PERFORMED A PRESSURE TEST AND COULD NOT LOCATE ANY COOLANT LEAKS AND TOLD US TO CONTINUE DRIVING IT UNTIL IT REGISTERED WITH LOW COOLANT AGAIN. THIS SECOND TIME WAS WHEN WE BROUGHT IT IN AND THEY TOLD US ABOUT THE CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD.

AFTER SHORT DRIVES AND USUALLY A 15 MINUTE TO 30 MINUTE REST, THE CAR STARTS UP BUT AFTER SHORT DRIVES THE CAR BEGINS TO STALL OUT LIKE FUEL IS CUT OFF AND DIES AFTER DRIVING A VERY SHORT DISTANCE. PUTTING THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND GIVING IT GAS DOES NOT STABILIZE THE CAR AND IT DIES. DOES DO THIS ALL THE TIME BUT IT HAS HAPPENED 7 OR 8 TIMES OVER A 2 MONTH PERIOD.. THE MECHANIC FINDS NOTHING WRONG AND NO SERVICE INFO FROM FORD

CAR HAS BEEN LOSING COOLANT DURING THE PAST YEAR. I HAVE ADDED COOLANT WHENEVER LOW-LEVEL ALARM CAME ON, AND TAKEN TO MECHANIC MULTIPLE TIMES WITHOUT ANY LEAK BEING DISCOVERED. COOLANT NEEDS TO BE ADDED AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH. I NOTICED A RECALL ON 2014 1.6L FORD ESCAPES FOR THIS ISSUE, BUT THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS WITH MY 2013 1.6L.

COOLANT LIGHT CAME ON AND AFTER COOLANT WAS ADDED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND WHAT NOT GO OUT. ALSO EVERY TIME I ADDED FUEL MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. EACH TIME I WOULD ADD FUEL IT TOOK SEVERAL TRIES TO START THE ENGINE. EVERY OTHER DAY I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO START THE ENGINE FOR HOURS. I TOOK THE CAR IN TO A FORD DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION I HAD SEVERAL CODES COME UP. A FAILED COOLANT BYPASS VALVE WAS REPLACED AS WELL AS A FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR. CODES (P 0087) (P 018 C) (P 26 B 7) (P 1450) THE RESTRAINTS MODULE CONTROL REPLACEMENT AND DID A COOLANT SYSTEM FLUSH. AFTER EXTENSIVE WORK AND OVER ALMOST $2,000 SPENT MY VEHICLE ENGINE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND I CONTINUE TO HAVE TROUBLE STARTING MY VEHICLE AFTER ADDING FUEL EVERY SINGLE TIME. THE FUEL ISSUE REALLY WORRIES ME BECAUSE WHENEVER I GET OUT OF MY VEHICLE I SMELL GAS AND DON'T THINK THAT IS NORMAL. I REALLY HOPE I CAN GET THIS RESOLVED SOON BECAUSE I CANNOT GO WITHOUT DRIVING BUT I AM LOOSING SLEEP AS WELL AS BEING VERY NERVOUS WHEN I HAVE TO REFUEL. PLEASE HELP ME RESOLVE THIS ISSUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE I AM STARTING TO REGRET CHOOSING A FORD!!!!!!

COOLANT LEAK THAT COULD CAUSE POSSIBLE FIRE, 12V551000 STILL NOT RESOLVED FOR MY CAR. SMELL OF VAPORIZING COOLANT EVERY TIME I ACCELERATE, COOLANT DEPLETES WAY FASTER THAN A NORMAL CAR. MECHANICS DON'T FIND LEAKS IN HOSES OR LINES.

  12. Engine, Apr 6, 2017

SINCE THE RECALL ON THE COOLANT SYSTEM, THE COOLANT LOW WARNING HAS COME ON SEVERAL TIMES. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY FORD SERVICE MANAGERS SEVERAL TIMES THAT THE CLOSED SYSTEM HAS AN AIR BUBBLE IN IT. HOWEVER, THE COOLANT LEVEL IS LOW AND DOES REQUIRE ADDITIONAL FLUID. THE LOW COOLANT WARNING COMES ON AT START UP (IGNITION). ONCE IT GOES ON, IT MAY STAY ON OR GO OFF AND ON OVER SEVERAL DAYS. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN EVIDENCE OF A LEAK IDENTIFIED BY A SERVICE TECHNICIAN OR IN FLUID LEFT AFTER PARKING (PUDDLING). THE ENGINE ROUTINELY SMELLS HOT AFTER DRIVING 10 MINUTES OR MORE.

VEHICLE OVERHEATED NUMEROUS TIMES WHILE IN MOTION AND AT REST ON THE HIGHWAY AND ON CITY STREETS. TEMPERATURE SPIKED SUDDENLY AT RANDOM. CHECKED COOLANT LEVELS. COOLANT WAS LOW, SO ADDITIONAL COOLANT WAS ADDED. HAPPENED 3 TIMES BEFORE TAKING INTO FORD DEALER. ENGINE WAS TORN DOWN TO BLOCK. COOLANT LINE WAS FOUND LEAKING INTO ENGINE. COOLANT WAS FOUND IN CYLINDER 3. A GROOVE FORMED IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. HEAD GASKET FAILED BECAUSE OF THIS. ACCORDING TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP, NOTHING COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO CAUSE OR PREVENT THIS. THERE WAS NO WAY OF KNOWING THAT THE DAMAGE WAS OCCURING. SPOKE WITH FORD REPRESENTATIVES. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS APPROX. 12,000 MILES OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY, NO REPAIRS OR REIMBURSEMENT WOULD BE PROVIDED BY THEM. SPOKE WITH THE EXTENDED WARRANTY REPS. BECAUSE THE PART THAT INITIALLY FAILED WAS A NON-LUBRICATED PART, NO SERVICES WOULD BE COVERED. THE COST TO REPAIR THE ENGINE IS $9,411. COST TO TEAR THE ENGINE APART AND DIAGNOSE WAS $1585.08. BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE AT 62,000 MILES IN GOOD FAITH THAT THIS WAS A RELIABLE VEHICLE. ALL SERVICE WAS DONE ON TIME WITH RECOMMENDED SERVICE, WITH SERVICE RECORDS ON HAND

OUR 1.6L ESCAPE'S CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. DEALER DIAGNOSED BAD OXYGEN SENSOR W/FIX COST OF $350 & ALTHOUGH WE HAD BOTH A PREMIUM PRE-PAID MAINTENANCE PLAN & EXTENDED WARRANTY IN EFFECT, BOTH DEALER & FORD INDICATED THIS EMISSIONS REPAIR WAS NOT COVERED (FORD EXTENDED WARR. TO 75K MI DUE TO # OF RECALLS). WE COULD NOT AFFORD DEALER COST SO FORCED TO SEEK ALTERNATIVE SHOP OR CAR WOULD FAIL EMISSIONS INSPECTION. REPAIR SHOP STATED ROOT CAUSE OF BAD SENSOR WAS FLUID DRIPPING FROM DIRECTLY ABOVE SENSOR WHICH DUE TO EXTENSIVE BUILDUP, APPEARED TO BE LONG TIME PROBLEM (WHICH FORD DEALER NEVER NOTICED IN 73K MILES OF REGULAR SERVICING??!!). THIS CAR IS A TOTAL PIECE OF CRAP. GIVEN 14 RECALLS, 89 TSBS & NEARLY 600 COMPLAINTS, FORD SHOULD BE FORCED TO BUY THESE CARS BACK!
