Recalls and investigations

  1. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.

  2. Power train, automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl)Jun 10, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

  3. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  4. Power train, automatic transmission, lever and linkage, floor shiftJul 16, 2018

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Ford Escape, and 2013-2016 Ford Fusion vehicles, equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. The recall began September 20, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S20. Note: Owners are directed to use the parking brake until the recall remedy repairs can be made.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Escape vehicles manufactured October 5, 2011, through April 10, 2014. Due to an assembly misalignment between the exterior door handle and the door outer panel, the affected vehicles have doors that may be difficult to close or may possibly open while driving.

A door that opens unexpectedly may result in an unrestrained occupant falling from the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the mounting of the door handles, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S03.

  15. Engine and engine coolingDec 3, 2012

This is an update to a recently announced recall. Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through November 26, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines, as well as certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2012, through November 29, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. Coolant system leaks may cause the engines to overheat and leak flammable engine fluids.

If flammable engine fluids come in contact with the vehicle’s hot exhaust system, a vehicle fire could occur.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine for coolant system leaks and reprogram the vehicle’s powertrain control module and instrument cluster with an updated calibration and overheat strategy software. There will be no charge to owners for this service. Owners were recently notified to contact dealers to arrange for alternative transportation as Ford developed a remedy. Owners will be shortly receiving notifications to contact Ford dealers to schedule the free remedy repair. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through August 31, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. The cylinder head cup plug (freeze plug) may become dislodged resulting in significant loss of engine coolant.

As leaking engine coolant evaporates on the hot engine, the glycol may ignite causing an engine compartment fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will seal the existing plug and add a secondary plug cover, free of charge. The safety recall began on September 11, 2012. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

RECALL REPAIR DONE IN AUGUST 2014 FOR WELL PUBLICIZED LOCALIZED OVERHEATING OF CYLINDER HEAD ISSUE. HAVE HAD TWO INSTANCES OF OVERHEATING SINCE... THE LAST INCIDENT OCCURRED ON 2/19. THE VEHICLE WENT TO LOW POWER MODE AND INSTRUCTED MY WIFE TO PULL OVER IMMEDIATELY AND STOP ENGINE... SHE DID.... AFTER SITTING FOR APPROX 10 MINUTES SHE RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND TEMPERATURES RETURNED TO NORMAL HOWEVER THE ENGINE LIGHT IS NOW ON AND I WILL BE TAKING THE VEHICLE FOR REPAIRS AGAIN ON MONDAY. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE RELIABILITY OF THIS VEHICLE AND SPECIFICALLY THIS ENGINE OPTION. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY THIS LATEST INCIDENT... I'M SURE THERE WILL BE SOME RESIDUAL LONGEVITY IMPACTS IF I KEEP THE VEHICLE. I PREDICT THAT THIS ENGINE WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE ISSUES.. BOTH INCIDENTS DID OCCUR DURING EXTREME COLD (BELOW ZERO) SO IT SEEMS TO BE COOLING SYSTEM RELATED... WHICH WAS THE BASIS OF THE ORIGINAL RECALL. *TR

THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT POWER LOSS ISSUE ON A 2013 FORD ESCAPE PURCHASED ON DECEMBER 31, 2013. WE HAVE HAD THE ISSUE SINCE THAT DATE. AT SPEEDS UNDER 35MPH AND ALWAYS WHILE MAKING A TURN, THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL POWER AND MUST BE COASTED TO A SAFE SPOT, STOPPED, PUT INTO PARK, AND THEN TURNING THE KEY TO RESTART. THIS ISSUE HAPPENS 1-4 TIMES A WEEK DURING DAILY USE. WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER SHIP 3 TIMES. THE FIRST TWO TIMES I NOTIFIED THEM OF THE ISSUE VERBALLY, BUT SINCE IT DID NOT HAPPEN DURING THEIR TEST DRIVES, NOTHING WAS DONE OR NOTED. THIS LAST TIME, THE ISSUE OCCURRED ON DECEMBER 24, 2014, WHILE MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN THROUGH A CITY INTERSECTION THAT ALSO PUT THE VEHICLE ON A SLIGHT INCLINE, THE POWER WAS LOST, AND WE COULD NOT COAST TO SAFETY TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. ANOTHER VEHICLE HAD TO LOCK ITS BRAKES TO AVOID A COLLISION. ON JAN 2, 2015 I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO LAKEWOOD FORD IN LAKEWOOD, WA WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED. THEY HAD THE VEHICLE FROM JAN 2 - JAN 9 2015. THEY TEST DROVE IT A TOTAL OF 26 MILES. THEY DID NOT USE A "FLIGHT RECORDER" TO CAPTURE ANY DATA. THE VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND I WILL BE TAKING IT TO EVERY FORD DEALERSHIP I CAN FIND UNTIL ONE OF THEM ACKNOWLEDGES AND REPAIRS THE ISSUE. I WILL ALSO BE RECORDING VIDEO OF THE ISSUE. THE CAMERA WILL CAPTURE THE INSTRUMENTATION AND ROAD. *TR

JUST TURNED ON CAR AND WAS PULLING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. THE INFORMATION LIGHT CAME ON AND SAID IT WAS LOW ON COOLANT. I NOTICED A BURNING TYPE SMELL WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE CAR TO SEE HOW LOW THE COOLANT WAS. THIS CAR HAD BEEN RECALLED BEFORE FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAKS AND OVERHEATING. I TOOK MY CAR IN TO GET THAT RECALL FIXED IN MAY 2014 AND NOW IT'S HAVING THAT PROBLEM AGAIN. I DON'T KNOW IF SOMETHING ELSE BROKE OR THAT THEY DIDN'T FIX IT RIGHT. I DIDN'T BUY THIS CAR BRAND NEW SO I COULD TAKE IT IN LIKE 5 TIMES FOR RECALLS. I ALSO CHECKED THE COOLANT LEVEL LAST WEEK AND IT WAS AT THE LEVEL IT SHOULD BE AT...SO IT MAY BE A FAST LEAK. *TR

10/29/14: WHILE IN THE BUFFALO, NY AREA, I TURNED ON THE CAR AND NOTICED THE ENGINE FAULT SERVICE NOW' NOTICE CAME ON. AFTER I CLICKED OK TO MAKE THE MESSAGE GO AWAY I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND TRIED TO ACCELERATE BUT NOTICED THE ENGINE WAS VERY SLUGGISH. THE CAR HAD NO PICKUP EVEN WITH THE LITTLE PRESSURE I APPLIED TO THE GAS PEDAL. THE TACHOMETER WAS ACTING SPORADIC AND THE ENGINE FELT AS THOUGH IT WAS CLOSE TO CUTTING OUT. I DECIDED TO ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION AND SINCE WE WERE IN A BIG OPEN PARKING LOT I DECIDED TO PARK THE CAR AND CALL FOR A TOW TRUCK TO TAKE US TO THE NEAREST FORD DEALERSHIP. THE DEALER (BASIL FORD, CHEEKTOWAGA, NY) KEPT THE CAR OVERNIGHT AND REPLACED A SENSOR. 11/9/14: AT LOCAL SHOPPING CENTER, I STARTED THE CAR THE 'ENGINE FAULT SERVICE NOW' NOTICE CAME ON AGAIN AND WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN GEAR AND APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE GAS PEDAL I COULD FEEL THE ENGINE WAS SLUGGISH. BUT THIS TIME I PARKED THE CAR AND TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND WAITED FOR A MINUTE AND TURNED THE ENGINE BACK ON. WHEN I TURNED CAR BACK ON THE ENGINE FAULT NOTICE DID NOT COME ON AND THE ENGINE SEEMED FINE. APPARENTLY THE SENSOR FIX DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM CONCERNED FOR SAFETY NOW BASED ON OTHER REPORTS BY DRIVERS. *TR

THEY HAVE RUN TESTS, AND CHECKED FOR 'CODES' IN THE ENGINE, BUT NO CODES APPEARED, ALTHOUGH THE LAST TIME, I DROVE IT DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER AFTER IT STALLED. IT ALWAYS RESTARTS, BUT I'M OFTEN IN TRAFFIC AND DANGEROUS SITUATIONS. IT'S VERY SPORADIC, AND THERE IS NO WARNING BEFORE IT STALLS. *TR

MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE KEEPS SHUTTING OFF WHILE IN MOTION AND ALSO WHEN STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN OR STOP LIGHT. HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AND STARTED SOMETIME IN JUNE, 2014. HAPPENS REGARDLESS OF HOW SLOW OR FAST I AM MOVING IN THE VEHICLE. TOOK VEHICLE INTO MY LOCAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR A SCHEDULED CHECK UP AND MENTIONED THE ISSUE AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. CALLED FORD CORPORATE IN SEPTEMBER AND LOGGED A FORMAL COMPLAINT. THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE UNTIL PARTS BECAME AVAILABLE. THEY COULD NOT SEND APPROPRIATE PARTS UNTIL THEY COULD FIGURE OUT WHAT IS GOING WRONG. THEN THEY SAID A RECALL WOULD BE ISSUED THE END OF SEPTEMBER AND PARTS WOULD BE AVAILABLE FOR FIXES THEN. CALLED LOCAL FORD SERVICE ON 10/10/2014 AND THEY CLAIM PARTS STILL HAVE NOT COME AND COULD BE ANOTHER WEEK. THIS SAME ISSUE SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING TO OTHER 2013 MODELS AROUND THE COUNTRY. FORD HAS BEEN VERY SLOW ABOUT ACKNOWLEDGING BUT WHEN PRESSED THEY SEEM TO GIVE PARTIAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT BUT STILL NO PROMISES. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE FOR DRIVERS. CAN SOMETHING BE DONE? IS FORD GOING TO BE ALLOWED TO LET THIS GO ON UNTIL SOMEONE HAS A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR DIES? *TR

ADDED COOLANT TO PROPER LEVEL SEVERAL TIMES AT WEEKLY INTERVALS WHILE DRIVING APPROX. 200 MILES PER WEEK. LOSS OF COOLANT WAS NOT AN ISSUE UNTIL THE RECALL SERVICING WAS DONE. THIS MOST RECENT LOW COOLANT ENGINE FAULT MESSAGE OCCURRED AFTER FOUR WEEKS POST-NEW WATER PUMP. I AM RETURNING FOR ANOTHER SERVICE VISIT IN AN ATTEMPT TO FULLY AND FINALLY RESOLVE THE ISSUE. *TR

WHILE TRAVELING DOWN A HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, OUR VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST POWER, RED LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASHBOARD, VEHICLE CONTINUED RUNNING BUT GAS PEDAL DID NOT RESPOND. COASTED TO A STOP ALONG SHOULDER, TURNED VEHICLE OFF, WAITED A COUPLE OF MINUTES, RESTARTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. 12 VOLT PLUGS REMAINED OFF. CALLED FORD DEALERSHIP TODAY. THEY SAY THIS ISSUE WILL BE COVERED IN ANOTHER RECALL FROM FORD, HAS TO DO WITH THE ELECTRICAL WIRING HARNESS WHICH SHORTS OUT, HOWEVER REPLACEMENT PART NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. HAD WE BEEN ON THE FREEWAY IN SEATTLE AS WE WERE EARLIER IN THE DAY, THIS WOULD HAVE CAUSED A REAR END ACCIDENT FOR SURE. WE FEEL FORD HAS LEFT US WITH AN UNDEPENDABLE VEHICLE, SEVERAL RECALLS ALREADY AND NOW THIS VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. WE NO LONGER FEEL WE CAN TRAVEL SAFELY IN THIS VEHICLE EVEN AFTER THIS NEXT RECALL IS REPAIRED. QUALITY CONTROL IS DEFINITELY ABSENT, WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE WILL BE RECALLED AT THIS RATE. *TR

MY VEHICLE WAS HESITATING ACTING LIKE IT WASN'T GETTING POWER AND THEN IT WOULD AND THEN IT WOULDN'T AT WHICH TIME THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON BUT THE SYNC ON THE VEHICLE WAS SHOWING ALL SYSTEMS ARE NORMAL. WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP WHERE WE FOUND THERE WAS A RECALL THAT COULD DO THESE THINGS. HOW EVER THEY CANNOT FIX OR GUARANTEE THIS IS THE PROBLEM SINCE FORD CORPORATE HAS NOT TOLD THEM HOW TO CHECK THIS OR FIX IT. FORD DEALERSHIP. INFORMED US THERE HAS BEEN NO FATALITIES FROM THIS YET SO WE SHOULD BE OK TO TAKE THE CAR UNTIL THEY GET THIS INFORMATION OUT TO DEALERSHIPS SOMETIME IN LATE SEPTEMBER. THE FORD CORPORATE SAYS UNLESS THE DEALERSHIP FINDS IT UNSAFE THEN THEY WOULD FIGURE SOMETHING OUT. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT TO CHECK THEY CANT SAY WHETHER IT IS SAFE OR UNSAFE. IF YOUR CAR CAN STALL AND POSSIBLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AS THEY SAY IN THE RECALL THAT SOUNDS PRETTY UNSAFE. OUR CAR IS NOW SITTING AT A DEALERSHIP BECAUSE NOBODY WILL FIX OR GUARANTEE THE SAFETY WITH THE RECALL BUT NO WAY TO GET IT FIXED. *TR
