Recalls and investigations

  1. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.

  2. Power train, automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl)Jun 10, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

  3. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  4. Power train, automatic transmission, lever and linkage, floor shiftJul 16, 2018

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Ford Escape, and 2013-2016 Ford Fusion vehicles, equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. The recall began September 20, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S20. Note: Owners are directed to use the parking brake until the recall remedy repairs can be made.

FIRST INCIDENT: AUGUST 3RD 2016 WHILE DRIVING 50MPH CAR DISPLAYED A ENGINE OVERHEATING WARNING MESSAGE AND SLOWED DOWN AS I PULLED OFF THE ROAD. AFTER A FEW MINUTES I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE AGAIN AND THE MESSAGE DID NOT REAPPEAR, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. I TOOK THE CAR TO KEARNEY PERSON FORD 7303 CLAIREMONT MESA BLVD SAN DIEGO, CA 92111 THEY TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG AND TURNED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OFF. SECOND INCIDENT: DRIVING TO WORK EARLIER THIS YEAR 2017 I GOT THE SAME MESSAGE THAT MY ENGINE COOLANT WAS LOW, AND TO SLOW DOWN BECAUSE OF CRITICAL OVERHEATING, EVEN THOUGH I HAD JUST HAD THE CAR SERVICED FOR A REGULAR MAINTENANCE CHECK, ONCE AGAIN AT KEARNY PERSON FORD. I WAS DRIVING NORMALLY ON A ROAD AT AROUND 30-40MPH BUT ACCELERATING WHEN THE MESSAGE POPPED UP. I REFILED THE COOLANT AS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT TURN ON. THIRD INCIDENT: THIS WAS THE MOST DANGEROUS TIME. CRITICAL ENGINE OVERHEATING MESSAGE AND LOW COOLANT MESSAGE POPPED UP WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING UP HILL IN TRAFFIC GOING ABOUT 20MPH ON THE I-5S AT THE IN CALIFORNIA GRAPEVINE. THE ENGINE NEARLY SHUT OFF AND LIMPED ON JUST A COUPLE CYLINDERS AS I TRIED TO GET TO THE SHOULDER. SMOKE WAS COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THE ENGINE WAS HOT. IT ALL HAPPENED IMMEDIATELY AND WITHOUT WARNING, THE TEMP GAUGE WAS NORMAL AND THEN BAM! OVERHEATED WITH WARNING MESSAGES CRIPPLING THE CAR. DRIVING SLOWLY BUT THE WEATHER WAS HOT IT WAS NEARLY 110 DEGREES OUTSIDE. SEEMS SUPER DANGEROUS. BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF WARNING WHEN THESE INCIDENTS HAPPEN. THE WAY THAT THE COOLANT JUST DISAPPEARS, AND THE SMOKE AND CHANCE OF FIRE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE STARTED OVERHEATING AND THE CHECK ENGINE AND LOW COOLANT WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROADWAY AND TURN OFF THE IGNITION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE WATER PUMP FAILED. THE WATER PUMP WAS REPLACED AND THE COOLANT WAS REFILLED. THE NEXT DAY, WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND THICK, BLACK SMOKE WAS SEEN COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE TURBO FAILED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. TWO DAYS LATER, WHILE DRIVING AT UNKNOWN SPEEDS, A STRONG FUEL ODOR WAS DETECTED IN THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE DIAGNOSIS WAS UNKNOWN, BUT THE MECHANIC STATED THAT FUEL LEAKS WERE A COMMON ISSUE WITH FORD VEHICLES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 12V551000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) AND 12V336000 (FUEL SYSTEM,GASOLINE). 4. Power train, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 22, 2017

I WAS SOLD THE CAR WITH A DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP AND NEVER WARNED THAT IT NEEDED TO BE RECALLED, THEREFORE, I HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT FOR OVER A YEAR WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF IT STARTING ON FIRE. ALSO, RECENTLY THE POWER TRAIN WENT ON MY CAR ALMOST EXACTLY ONE MONTH AFTER THE WARRANTY WAS UP. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT MANY OTHER FORD ESCAPE OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS EXACT ISSUE. I WAS EVEN TOLD BY ONE MECHANIC THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH FORD ESCAPES AMONGST MECHANICS. WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION IT "CLUNKS" AND DOES NOT SHIFT PROPERLY. I AM CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS WHO MAY BE DRIVING THESE CARS WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT.

AFTER SHORT DRIVES AND USUALLY A 15 MINUTE TO 30 MINUTE REST, THE CAR STARTS UP BUT AFTER SHORT DRIVES THE CAR BEGINS TO STALL OUT LIKE FUEL IS CUT OFF AND DIES AFTER DRIVING A VERY SHORT DISTANCE. PUTTING THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND GIVING IT GAS DOES NOT STABILIZE THE CAR AND IT DIES. DOES DO THIS ALL THE TIME BUT IT HAS HAPPENED 7 OR 8 TIMES OVER A 2 MONTH PERIOD.. THE MECHANIC FINDS NOTHING WRONG AND NO SERVICE INFO FROM FORD

  12. Fuel/propulsion system, Apr 11, 2017

I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN TO TAKE THE EMISSION TEST AFTER IT DID NOT PASS THE FIRST ONE. I SPENT OVER SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS O HAVE THE CODES ADDRESSED AND FIXED SUPPOSEDLY. MY VEHICLE FAILED THE TEST AGAIN WITH ONE OF THE SAME CODES AS BEFORE AND ONE NEW ONE RELATING TO THE FUEL SYSTEM. CODES ( ) ( ). I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED, FRUSTRATED AND VERY, VERY CONCERNED. ESPECIALLY HAVING CONTINUAL ISSUES WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM, IT IS GETTING VERY EXPENSIVE FOR ME. I AM A SINGLE, DISABLED, ELDERLY FEMALE WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO KEEP TAKING MY VEHICLE TO THE SHOP TO BE SERVICED EVERY MONTH WHEN IT IS A 2013 AND SHOULDN'T HAVE SO MANY SERIOUS PROBLEMS. I GET MY OIL CHANGED AS SCHEDULED AS WELL AS BRAKES CHECKED AND TIRES REPLACED AS NEEDED. I REALLY AM IN NEED OF A RELIABLE VEHICLE BECAUSE I AM DISABLED AND I WAS SO SURE THAT THE FORD ESCAPE WAS THE ONE SINCE I HAD DRIVEN AN EXPEDITION FOR 10 YEARS WITH VERY LITTLE PROBLEMS. MY SOLUTION AT THIS POINT WOULD BE TO TRADE IT IN FOR SOMETHING ELSE, BUT I CANNOT AFFORD TO DO THAT AT THIS TIME. IF I FAIL THE EMISSION TEST AGAIN I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DRIVE NOR DO I HAVE THE EXPENSES TO CONTINUE GETTING IT WORKED ON. WITH MY CONDITION, THIS IS GOING TO CAUSE ME MAJOR PROBLEMS. UNFORTUNATELY I DO REGRET CHOOSING A FORD. NOWHERE TO TURN

COOLANT LIGHT CAME ON AND AFTER COOLANT WAS ADDED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND WHAT NOT GO OUT. ALSO EVERY TIME I ADDED FUEL MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. EACH TIME I WOULD ADD FUEL IT TOOK SEVERAL TRIES TO START THE ENGINE. EVERY OTHER DAY I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO START THE ENGINE FOR HOURS. I TOOK THE CAR IN TO A FORD DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION I HAD SEVERAL CODES COME UP. A FAILED COOLANT BYPASS VALVE WAS REPLACED AS WELL AS A FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR. DRIVING MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE SEL WITH ONLY 52000 MILES ON IT HOME FROM SHOPPING IN RENO, NEVADA. I WAS IN WASHOE VALLEY, NV WHEN I THOUGH THE HIGH WINDS WERE KEEPING MY CAR FROM SPEEDING UP, WHEN I COULD NOT ACCELERATE I PULLED TO THE SLOW LANE AND THEN ONTO THE SHOULDER. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND LOOK AT MY DASH TO SEE IF I WAS OVERHEATING OR ANY OTHER ISSUES WERE APPARENT. MY DASH SHOWED NOTHING WRONG AT ALL. NO LIGHTS OR WARNINGS OF ANY KIND. THE GAGES WERE ALL RUNNING NORMAL. I PUT MY CAR IN PARK AND WITHIN A SECOND OR TWO A LARGE VERY BLACK BILLOW OF SMOKE CAME UP BACK PART OF THE ENGINE NEAREST TO HE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW. THEN SECOND LATER LARGER FIRE FLAMES CAME RIGHT BEHIND IT THAT WENT OVER THE TOP OF MY CAR. MY CAR WENT UP IN FLAMES IN JUST MOMENTS. I HAD TO JUMP FROM THE BURNING CAR TO SAFELY.

PURCHASED VEHICLE IN AUGUST OF 2014 WITH 28,000 MILES ON IT. ABOUT 2-3 WEEKS AGO THE VEHICLE JUST STALKED, LOST ALL POWER THEN DIED ON MY WIFE WITH MY 19 MONTH OLD BABY GIRL IN THE CAR. VEHICLE STARTS RIGHT BACK UP WHEN THIS OCCURS. IT HAPPENS A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK AND IS VERY DANGEROUS. SOMETIMES IT WILL DIE WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO ACCELERATE OR MERGE INTO TRAFFIC. TOOK IT TO THE SAME FORD DEALER WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM AND THEY WERE ABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, NO CODES ARE PRESENT IN THE VEHICLE EVEN WHEN IT HAPPENS. THE FORD SERVICE WRITER AND TECHNICIAN SAID THAT IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY. THE VEHICLE HAS 52,000 MILES ON IT HOWEVER I WAS TOLD NO WARRANTY OR RECALL COVERED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE THROTTLE BODY. I PAID FOR THE THROTTLE BODY REPAIR. LESS THAN 48 HOURS LATER THE VEHICLE DIES AGAIN ON MY WIFE WHILE PULLING OUT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. AGAIN WITH MY CHILD IN THE BACK SEAT.
