Recalls and investigations

  1. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.

  2. Power train, automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl)Jun 10, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

  3. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  4. Power train, automatic transmission, lever and linkage, floor shiftJul 16, 2018

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Ford Escape, and 2013-2016 Ford Fusion vehicles, equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. The recall began September 20, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S20. Note: Owners are directed to use the parking brake until the recall remedy repairs can be made.

A component within the door latches may break, preventing the doors from latching and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the door latches with an improved part, free of charge. The recall began on January 27, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S30.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Escape vehicles manufactured October 5, 2011, through April 10, 2014. Due to an assembly misalignment between the exterior door handle and the door outer panel, the affected vehicles have doors that may be difficult to close or may possibly open while driving.

A door that opens unexpectedly may result in an unrestrained occupant falling from the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the mounting of the door handles, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S03.

  12. Fuel system, gasoline, delivery, hoses, lines/piping, and fittingsNov 25, 2013

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through July 11, 2012, and equipped with a 1.6L engine subject to prior safety recall NHTSA 12V-336. In some cases, the engine compartment fuel line may have been installed incorrectly when repaired under the prior recall. The misinstalled fuel line could chafe and eventually leak fuel.

  14. Latches/locks/linkagesMar 7, 2013

Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Focus and C-Max vehicles built from November 16, 2012, through November 21, 2012; and model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from November 14, 2012, through November 21, 2012. The left rear door child lock was built incorrectly. As a result, the child lock may not engage when the operator uses normal force to activate the child lock.

The operator may incorrectly believe the child lock is engaged. However, the door may be opened from the inside, increasing the risk of injury to an unrestrained child.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected rear door latches, and replace them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on March 27, 2013. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

  15. Engine and engine coolingDec 3, 2012

This is an update to a recently announced recall. Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through November 26, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines, as well as certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2012, through November 29, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. Coolant system leaks may cause the engines to overheat and leak flammable engine fluids.

If flammable engine fluids come in contact with the vehicle’s hot exhaust system, a vehicle fire could occur.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine for coolant system leaks and reprogram the vehicle’s powertrain control module and instrument cluster with an updated calibration and overheat strategy software. There will be no charge to owners for this service. Owners were recently notified to contact dealers to arrange for alternative transportation as Ford developed a remedy. Owners will be shortly receiving notifications to contact Ford dealers to schedule the free remedy repair. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through August 31, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. The cylinder head cup plug (freeze plug) may become dislodged resulting in significant loss of engine coolant.

As leaking engine coolant evaporates on the hot engine, the glycol may ignite causing an engine compartment fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will seal the existing plug and add a secondary plug cover, free of charge. The safety recall began on September 11, 2012. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through July 11, 2012, and equipped with a 1.6L engine. These vehicles have an engine compartment fuel line which may split, resulting in a leak.

If this leak occurs in the presence of an ignition source, there is an increased risk of a fire and/or personal injury.

Ford will notify and instruct owners to stop driving their vehicles and contact a Ford or Lincoln dealer to arrange pick-up of their vehicle. Customers will be provided with a rental vehicle if needed. The dealer will replace the engine compartment fuel line, free charge. The recall began on August 10, 2012. FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2013 ESCAPE VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM MARCH 8, 2012 THROUGH JUNE 7, 2012. DUE TO MIS-POSITIONED CARPET PADDING THE CENTER CONSOLE TRIM PANEL MAY BE PUSHED OUTBOARD OF THE INTENDED POSITION, REDUCING CLEARANCE RELATIVE TO THE PEDAL PACKAGE.

THE REDUCED CLEARANCE MAY RESULT IN THE DRIVER?S FOOT CONTACTING THE SIDE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL WHILE TRANSFERRING THE FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, INCREASING STOPPING DISTANCES AND THE RISK OF A CRASH.

FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE CARPET PADDING AND LEFT-SIDE CONSOLE TRIM PANEL REPLACED WITH A NEW PANEL, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 20, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.

  1. Electrical system, Engine, Aug 25, 2014

WHILE TRAVELING DOWN A HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, OUR VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST POWER, RED LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASHBOARD, VEHICLE CONTINUED RUNNING BUT GAS PEDAL DID NOT RESPOND. COASTED TO A STOP ALONG SHOULDER, TURNED VEHICLE OFF, WAITED A COUPLE OF MINUTES, RESTARTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. 12 VOLT PLUGS REMAINED OFF. CALLED FORD DEALERSHIP TODAY. THEY SAY THIS ISSUE WILL BE COVERED IN ANOTHER RECALL FROM FORD, HAS TO DO WITH THE ELECTRICAL WIRING HARNESS WHICH SHORTS OUT, HOWEVER REPLACEMENT PART NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. HAD WE BEEN ON THE FREEWAY IN SEATTLE AS WE WERE EARLIER IN THE DAY, THIS WOULD HAVE CAUSED A REAR END ACCIDENT FOR SURE. WE FEEL FORD HAS LEFT US WITH AN UNDEPENDABLE VEHICLE, SEVERAL RECALLS ALREADY AND NOW THIS VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. WE NO LONGER FEEL WE CAN TRAVEL SAFELY IN THIS VEHICLE EVEN AFTER THIS NEXT RECALL IS REPAIRED. QUALITY CONTROL IS DEFINITELY ABSENT, WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE WILL BE RECALLED AT THIS RATE. *TR

  2. Electrical system, Aug 25, 2014

VEHICLE LOSES POWER (CHECK ENGINE, SERVICE ENGINE, AND BATTERY LIGHTS ILLUMINATED) WHILE DRIVING. BATTERY HAS BEEN CHANGED OUT BY THE DEALERSHIP, BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUES ON A DAILY BASIS. SOMETIMES THE VEHICLE RESTARTS, BUT THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME, I HAVE TO GET THE VEHICLE JUMPED OFF. I HAVE LOST POWER ON THE HIGHWAY AS WELL ON BUSY URBAN STREETS. THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS ISSUE. *TR

  3. Engine and engine cooling, Aug 22, 2014

MY VEHICLE WAS HESITATING ACTING LIKE IT WASN'T GETTING POWER AND THEN IT WOULD AND THEN IT WOULDN'T AT WHICH TIME THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON BUT THE SYNC ON THE VEHICLE WAS SHOWING ALL SYSTEMS ARE NORMAL. WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP WHERE WE FOUND THERE WAS A RECALL THAT COULD DO THESE THINGS. HOW EVER THEY CANNOT FIX OR GUARANTEE THIS IS THE PROBLEM SINCE FORD CORPORATE HAS NOT TOLD THEM HOW TO CHECK THIS OR FIX IT. FORD DEALERSHIP. INFORMED US THERE HAS BEEN NO FATALITIES FROM THIS YET SO WE SHOULD BE OK TO TAKE THE CAR UNTIL THEY GET THIS INFORMATION OUT TO DEALERSHIPS SOMETIME IN LATE SEPTEMBER. THE FORD CORPORATE SAYS UNLESS THE DEALERSHIP FINDS IT UNSAFE THEN THEY WOULD FIGURE SOMETHING OUT. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT TO CHECK THEY CANT SAY WHETHER IT IS SAFE OR UNSAFE. IF YOUR CAR CAN STALL AND POSSIBLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AS THEY SAY IN THE RECALL THAT SOUNDS PRETTY UNSAFE. OUR CAR IS NOW SITTING AT A DEALERSHIP BECAUSE NOBODY WILL FIX OR GUARANTEE THE SAFETY WITH THE RECALL BUT NO WAY TO GET IT FIXED. *TR

THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WIRING SPLICE KIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 24,000.

  5. Engine, Aug 19, 2014

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY, AND STAYS ON FOR ABOUT 48 HOURS. WHEN I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY CANNOT FIND OUT WHY THE LIGHT IS COMING ON BECAUSE THE CODE IS NO LONGER VISIBLE. THE CAR IDLES ROUGH AND CUTS OFF WHEN THE CAR IS WARM AND I'M STOPPED IN TRAFFIC, AT A RED LIGHT FOR EXAMPLE. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO HAVE MY CAR CUT OFF IN INNER-CITY TRAFFIC. IT ALSO OCCURRED ONCE WHEN I WAS TRYING TO START THE CAR AFTER BEING OFF FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES. I HAD TO START IT 3 TIMES IN ORDER FOR IT TO STAY ON. EACH TIME, IT IDLED VERY ROUGHLY AND CUT OFF WITHIN A FEW SECONDS. *TR

  6. Engine, Aug 19, 2014

AS I AM DRIVING ALONG, MY CAR STARTS TO JUMP & SPUTTER & DIES. INFORMATION LIGHT COMES ON WITH "ENGINE FAULT, SERVICE IMMEDIATELY." I TAKE THE CAR IN TO THE FORD DEALER & HE TELLS ME THERE IS NOT A CODE SHOWING UP SO THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING. I HAVE HAD MY ESCAPE TO THE FORD HOUSE 4 TIMES FOR THE EXACT SAME THING & EVERYTIME, NO CODE SHOWS UP. WHAT THE HECK? IF THE ENGINE DIES & IT TELLS YOU ENGINE FAULT SERVICE IMMEDIATELY HOW CAN THERE NOT BE A CODE SHOW UP? WE WERE ON VACATION THIS WEEKEND AND IT DIES 4 TIMES WHILE WE ARE GONE. I WAS NEARLY REAR-ENDED SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE IT IS NEVER AT THE SAME RATE OF SPEED! SOMETIMES I AM SITTING AT A RED LIGHT, SOMETIMES I AM DRIVING IN TOWN AT 30 MPH, SOMETIMES I AM ON THE INTERSTATE AT 75 MPH. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FOR ONE THING I COULD BE HIT FROM BEHIND & INJURED ALONG WITH MY FAMILY & GRANDSON, FOR ANOTHER THING WHEN IT DIES, I LOSE MY STEERING & MY BRAKES. NOT GOOD WHEN YOU ARE IN HILL COUNTRY EITHER. I AM TIRED OF FORD NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS! I GUESS THEY ARE GOING TO WAIT UNTIL PEOPLE GET KILLED BEFORE THEY FINALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! SAVING MONEY TO TRADE VEHICLES BEFORE SOMETHING HAPPENS TO MY FAMILY! I ONLY HAVE 21,000 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE AND I THINK IT IS A TOTAL OF 8 TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED IN THE 13 MONTHS I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE. *TR

VEHICLE TOWED TO FORD ON 7/3/14 FOR FUEL LEAK. ALSO TOLD FORD THAT FUEL RANGE CONSUMPTION GAUGE WAS NOT WORKING RIGHT. FORD WAS UNABLE TO VERIFY FUEL LEAK CONCERN BUT DID THE 13S12 OVERHEATING AND 14S03 HANDLE RECALLS. ON 7/19/14 LOW COOLANT LIGHT CAME ON. CALLED FORD AND THEY SAID THAT IT WAS AN AIR POCKET IN THE COOLANT SYSTEM AND TO ADD DISTILLED WATER AND DRIVE IT TO FORD. THE DEALERSHIP DRAINED THE COOLANT, ADDED COOLANT AND PRESSURIZED TO CHECK THE SYSTEM. EXPLAINED TO FORD THAT OUR DAUGHTER WAS TAKING THE CAR ON A 500 MILE ROAD TRIP THAT AFTERNOON. THEY REASSURED US IT WAS FIXED AND THAT SHE WOULD NOT HAVE AN ISSUE, BUT IF SHE DID, SIMPLY ADD DISTILLED WATER AGAIN TO RESOLVE. LATER ON 7/19/14, AFTER DRIVING 150 MILES OF THE TRIP, THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE RAPIDLY JUMPED FROM NORMAL TO HOT AND THE ENGINE OVERHEATED. ROADSIDE ASSIST. TOWED TO THE CLOSEST FORD DEALERSHIP. IN ORDER TO PARK IN THE SINGLE BAY OF OUR THREE CAR SIDE ENTRY ATTACHED GARAGE, YOU HAVE TO PULL UP TO THE POST BETWEEN THE DOUBLE AND SINGLE BAYS, BACK UP AND PULL FORWARD. AFTER PULLING TO ABOUT ONE FOOT FROM THE GARAGE SUPPORT POST AND BRINGING THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP, I ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE. THE ESCAPE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED INTO THE POST AND OUR EXPEDITION PARKED IN THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE DOUBLE BAY. IT FELT LIKE I HAD BEEN SLAMMED INTO FROM BEHIND. WITH THE ENGINE RACING I WAS ABLE TO USE THE START/STOP BUTTON TO STOP THE ENGINE. THE POST WAS DRIVEN OVER THREE FEET INTO THE GARAGE AND THE EXPEDITION WAS HIT WITH SO MUCH FORCE THAT IT JUMPED ABOUT AN INCH ONTO THE CEMENT CURB IN FRONT OF THE GARAGE. HITTING THE EXPEDITION PREVENTED THE GARAGE POST (WOOD AND BRICK) FROM TOTALLY COLLAPSING. THE ESCAPE HAS THE 1.6L ECO-BOOST ENGINE AND WAS PURCHASED IN OCT. 2012. IT HAS BEEN DRIVEN ONLY 5,904 MILES. AT 5,672 MILES THE DEALERSHIP HAD THE VEHICLE FOR THREE DAYS FOR THREE RECALLS 13S12, 14S04 AND 14S03. *TR

I HAVE THE 2013 FORD ESCAPE 2.0 WITH ECO-BOOST. SUDDENLY IT BEGAN STALLING WHEN I WAS IN PARK, IT HAS GRADUALLY BEGAN STALLING WHEN I AM IN DRIVE BUT AT A STOP. LUCKILY IT HAS NOT HAPPENED WHILE I WAS IN MOTION. THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON ALONG WITH SERVICE NOW INDICATOR AND OTHER DASH ICONS. I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND RESTART WITH NO PROBLEM. ALL ICON'S DISAPPEAR AND THE VEHICLE GOES BACK TO RUNNING NORMAL. I HAVE NOTICED IT IS IDLING ROUGHLY AND A BIT HIGHER THAN NORMAL ABOUT 900 RPM. IT CONSTANTLY IDLES AS IF IT IS GOING TO STALL ALTHOUGH STALLING DOES NOT ALWAYS OCCUR. *TR

IN 2 WEEKS MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE HAS STOPPED RUNNING. THE FIRST TIME I WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP. THE SECOND TIME I WAS SLOWING DOWN FOR A STOP SIGN AND THE ENGINE CUT OFF AGAIN. BOTH TIME THE CAR RESTARTED. IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER BOTH TIMES AND THEY CAN FINE NOTHING WRONG. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT IT WILL HAPPEN WHEN I AM DRIVING AND SOMEONE WILL RUN INTO ME. *JS

WHILE DRIVING THE ENGINE FAULT LIGHT CAME ON. THE CAR BEGAN TO LURCH WHEN CHANGING GEARS ALMOST CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. ONCE CAR TURNED OFF AND TURNED BACK ON THE FAULT CLEARED AND THE ENGINE RAN SMOOTH. TOOK THE CAR TO THE FORD STORE SAN LEANDRO (CA). LIKE THE SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEBSITE THEY COULD NOT FIND RECORD ON THE CAR'S COMPUTER AND COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEREFORE I GO AWAY VERY CONCERNED ABOUT MY SAFETY AND FUTURE OCCURRENCES OF THE SAME EVENT. FROM THIS WEBSITE I SEE LOTS OF COMPLAINTS. WHEN WILL FORD DO SOMETHING TO RECTIFY. HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BE INJURED OR DIE TO GET THEM WORKING ON RESOLVING THIS ISSUE? *TR

SINCE JULY 1,2014 MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE HAS STALLED 3 ADDITIONAL TIMES FOR A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES. TWICE IN TWO DAYS. THE FIRST TWO WHILE STANDING STILL AT A LIGHT, THE LAST 2 WHILE SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE A TURN, 2ND TIME 07-08-2014, 3RD 07-20-2014 AND 4TH TODAY 07-22-2014. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO BLUE SPRINGS FORD IN BLUE SPRINGS MO ON MONDAY 07-14-2014 WAS INFORMED THE PART HAD TO BE ORDERED AND WOULD BE IN ABOUT 7 TO 10 DAYS BUT WASN'T INFORMED WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR. CALLED BLUE SPRINGS FORD TODAY 07-22-2014 WAS INFORMED THE PART NEEDED IS A O2 SENOR AND IS ON BACK ORDER. I'M AFRAID THE CAR IS GOING TO STALL WHILE IN MOTION AND GET REAR ENDED. I WAS INFORMED BY THE SERVICE MANAGER IT WONT STALL WHILE MOVING BUT THE 3RD AND 4TH TIME IT DID WHILE SLOWING DOWN INSTEAD OF AT A FULL STOP LIKE THE FIRST AND 2ND TIME. I USE I -70 TO GET BACK AND FORTH TO WORK INCLUDING RUNNING ERRANDS. THIS IS BECOMING A SAFETY ISSUE AND THE 2013 FORD ESCAPE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE O2 SENOR. I'M NOT TOO HAPPY NOT KNOWING HOW LONG ITS GOING TO BE TO GET THE PART IN TO GET MY CAR REPAIRED. THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR

MAY 26, 2014 BEGAN A FORD RECALL OF "CERTAIN MODELS" 2013 ESCAPE FOR RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE DEFECT-IT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF THE RCM (FORD #14S04, NHTSA #14V237000). I DID NOT RECEIVE A NOTIFICATION. APPARENTLY I DON'T OWN THE "CERTAIN MODEL". JULY 19, 2014 THE "AIR BAG SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT" ILLUMINATED AND STAYED ON. JULY 22 DEALERSHIP SAYS RCM NEEDS REPLACEMENT. IS DEFECT NOT ONLY IN THE "CERTAIN MODELS" CLAIMED IN MAY RECALL? LUCKILY, ALTHO PAST THE 36,000 MILE BASIC WARRANTY AND THAT IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE MAY RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM, IT IS COVERED BY A "RESTRAINT WARRANTY". PHEW...BUT, THEY CAN'T FIND THE PART ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY. FORD SAYS MAYBE THEY CAN SHIP ONE BY EARLY TO MID AUGUST. MY CAR IS UNSAFE AND STAYS AT THE DEALERSHIP UNTIL THE PART IS RECEIVED. LUCKILY THE DEALERSHIP WILL PROVIDE ME A LOANER AT NO CHARGE. BOTTOM LINE: REALLY FORD?? SERIOUSLY?? YOU RECALL A PROBLEM AND INVOLVE ONLY CERTAIN CARS BUT IT IS APPARENTLY A PROBLEM IN OTHER...VERSIONS OF THE MODEL? I WISH I HAD READ THIS INFORMATION BEFORE I BOUGHT; I WOULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT THE ESCAPE. I AM PETRIFIED THE ENGINE STALLING, FIRES ETC.SEEN NUMEROUS TIMES IN THE COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE WILL AT SOME POINT OCCUR. ONCE REPAIRED I'M TRADING IT. 2013 ESCAPE=10 RECALLS, 39 SERVICE BULLETINS, 210 COMPLAINTS. 2013 NISSAN ROGUE= 0 RECALLS, 8 BULLETINS, 24 COMPLAINTS. HONDA CRV=1 RECALL, 9 BULLETINS, 76 COMPLAINTS. YOU DO THE MATH. DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER; THE ESCAPE IS VERY STYLISH BUT INSIDE HIDES TOO MANY PROBLEMS FROM NUISANCE TO SAFETY HAZARDS. NOT WORTH IT. TOO ADD TO THE CARTOON, THE LIFT GATE HANDLE BROKE-AWAY FROM THE BODY AT 36,086 MILES. HAHAHA, COST ME $50 TO FIX (SEE SERVICE BULLETIN # TSB-14-0012). ONE DAY EARLIER IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A WARRANTY REPAIR. WHAT A JOKE. THANKFULLY AT LEAST I SEEM TO HAVE FOUND A GREAT DEALERSHIP & SERVICE DEPARTMENT. *TR

ON 5/31/14, UPON STARTING VEHICLE (2.0 L, SEL), VEHICLE RUNNING ROUGH, SPUTTERING, LURCHING WHEN ACCELERATOR WAS DEPRESSED, ETC. MESSAGE ON DASH SCREEN STATED "ENGINE FAULT - SERVICE NOW". DROVE CAR APPROXIMATELY 8 MILES TO A FORD DEALER I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH. TURNED CAR OFF BUT THEN DECIDED TO MOVE CAR. STARTED CAR, ALL ISSUES DISAPPEARED, SO I LEFT AND DROVE CAR 35 MILES TO MY HOME WITH NO ISSUES. DROVE CAR UNTIL 6/20/14 WHEN EXACT SYMPTOMS HAPPENED AGAIN. DROVE CAR WITH SYMPTOMS OCCURRING TO LOCAL FORD DEALER. MECHANIC SUSPECTED COOING SYSTEM PROBLEM, TURNED OFF ENGINE WITHOUT HOOKING UP TO COMPUTER FOR DIAGNOSIS. MINUTES LATER, MECHANIC DECIDED PROBLEM WAS NOT COOLING SYSTEM RELATED SINCE ESCAPE WAS A 2.0 L (COOLING SYSTEM PROBLEMS APPARENTLY OCCUR WITH 1.6 L MODELS), BUT WAS INSTEAD THE MAP SENSOR WHICH WAS REPLACED ON 6/26/14. NEXT DAY (6/27/14) AFTER MAP SENSOR REPLACEMENT, SAME EXACT ISSUES. NO TIME TO TAKE TO A DEALER, SO I SHUT IT OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND ALL SYMPTOMS DISAPPEARED. DROVE REGULARLY UNTIL 7/16/14, WHEN EXACT SYMPTOMS OCCURRED AGAIN. DROVE DIRECTLY TO LOCAL FORD DEALER, LEFT IT RUNNING. THEY HOOKED UP THE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER WHILE RUNNING WHICH SHOWED ERROR CODE RELATED TO MAP SENSOR AGAIN. EXPLAINED TO MECHANIC THAT MY RESEARCH HAS INDICATED THAT TSB 13-12-12 MIGHT ADDRESS THE PROBLEM WHICH IS RELATED TO WIRING IN THE "SIGNAL RETURN SPLICES." HE AGREED. MADE APPOINTMENT FOR NEXT DAY, 7/17/14. UPON STARTING ON 7/17/14, SAME SYMPTOMS. TURNED OFF, RESTARTED, SYMPTOMS CLEARED AND I DROVE IT WITH NO ISSUES TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER. LOCAL DEALER CALLED AND SAID THEY LOOKED AT THE WIRE SPLICES, MADE SOME "ADJUSTMENTS" (NO NEW PARTS) AND THAT VEHICLE IS READY FOR PICK UP. IF THIS OCCURS AGAIN, WHICH I BELIEVE IT WILL, I WILL ASK FOR WIRE HARNESS REPLACEMENT TO THE SIGNAL RETURN(S). DANGEROUS, WELL-DOCUMENTED PROBLEM. *TR

AFTER OWNING THIS VEHICLE FOR ONE MONTH, THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED. ABOUT A MONTH AFTER THE NEW TRANSMISSION WAS PLACED, I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR NOT WANTING TO ACCELERATE. I WOULD BE MERGING ONTO THE FREEWAY OR PULLING INTO TRAFFIC AND THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE RPM'S WOULD GO WAY UP, BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. I AM FEARFUL ANYTIME I DRIVE THIS CAR THAT IT MAY NOT ACCELERATE WHEN I NEED IT TO AND I'LL END UP IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT. I HAVE HAD MY ESCAPE INTO THE DEALERSHIP 5 TIMES FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. THE LAST TIME I HAD IT IN, FORD PUT IN A FLIGHT SIMULATOR. AFTER FORD EVALUATED THE SIMULATOR FINDINGS, FORD ENGINEERS SAID THIS WAS "NORMAL"; THEY WILL NO LONGER EVALUATE THE ISSUE. I AM TRULY SCARED IN THIS VEHICLE AND I'VE ONLY OWNED IT FOR ONE YEAR!!! HELP! *TR

FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS NEARLY THREE MONTHS AGO. 2013 FORD ESCAPE AS REPEATEDLY, WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY BUT RANDOMLY LOST POWER AND WITH THE ENGINE SHUTTING OFF. CAR HAS LOST ENGINE POWER AND WITH NO ABILITY TO ACCELERATE WHILE DRIVING SPEEDS UP TO 40 MPH. IT HAS OCCURRED WHILE APPROACHING A STOP, SITTING AT A STOP SIGN, ACCELERATING POST STOP, TURNING LEFT, TURNING RIGHT AND WHILE NAVIGATING AROUND-ABOUT AND CROSSING A RAILROAD TRACK. CAR WILL RESTART ONCE I PLACE IT IN PARK. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY CONCERN. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL NEAR MISSES AND ONLY BECAUSE I HAVE LEARNED TO RESPOND QUICKLY WITH MY HAZARD LIGHTS. I CALLED DON HINDS FORD IN FISHERS, IN AT THE SECOND OCCURRENCE AND THEY FAILED TO EXPRESS THE SAME LEVEL OF CONCERN TELLING ME I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT 4-5 DAYS FOR AN APPOINTMENT. THE FREQUENCY HAS INCREASED, ALBEIT STILL RANDOM AND NOT DAILY IT DOES OCCUR MULTIPLE TIMES A WEEK. I MADE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH DON HINDS WAITING AGAIN 4 BUSINESS DAYS ON 7-8-2014. I WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED AS THEIR REPORT WAS BASED ON THEIR INABILITY TO NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE LIKELIHOOD TO REPLICATE A RANDOM OCCURRENCE IN A SHORT TEST DRIVE WAS NOT EXPECTED BY ME AND I AM DISAPPOINTED THEY WERE FOOLISH TO THINK IT WOULD. THE HISTORY OF THE LAST 10 STARTS AND STOPS ON THE CAR'S COMPUTER DIDN'T REPORT ANY ERROR CODE. DON HIND'S STATES THAT FORD HAS NO REPORTS OF ANY INCIDENTS AND THEIR TECHNICAL SUPPORT HAD NO RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE MECHANIC. THE ADVICE OF THE MECHANIC WAS TO WAIT UNTIL IT WAS MORE FREQUENT IN OCCURRENCE AND ABLE TO BE REPLICATED AND THEN BRING IT BACK. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR AND TO TRANSPORT MY CHILDREN. THIS NEEDS URGENT ATTENTION. THIS POSES A HIGH RISK OF INJURY. *JS
