Recalls and investigations

  1. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.

  2. Power train, automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl)Jun 10, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

  3. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  4. Power train, automatic transmission, lever and linkage, floor shiftJul 16, 2018

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Ford Escape, and 2013-2016 Ford Fusion vehicles, equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. The recall began September 20, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S20. Note: Owners are directed to use the parking brake until the recall remedy repairs can be made.

A component within the door latches may break, preventing the doors from latching and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Due to an assembly misalignment between the exterior door handle and the door outer panel, the affected vehicles have doors that may be difficult to close or may possibly open while driving.

A door that opens unexpectedly may result in an unrestrained occupant falling from the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the mounting of the door handles, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S03.

  15. Engine and engine coolingDec 3, 2012

This is an update to a recently announced recall. Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through November 26, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines, as well as certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2012, through November 29, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. If flammable engine fluids come in contact with the vehicle’s hot exhaust system, a vehicle fire could occur.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine for coolant system leaks and reprogram the vehicle’s powertrain control module and instrument cluster with an updated calibration and overheat strategy software. There will be no charge to owners for this service. Owners were recently notified to contact dealers to arrange for alternative transportation as Ford developed a remedy. Owners will be shortly receiving notifications to contact Ford dealers to schedule the free remedy repair. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

As leaking engine coolant evaporates on the hot engine, the glycol may ignite causing an engine compartment fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will seal the existing plug and add a secondary plug cover, free of charge. The safety recall began on September 11, 2012. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

  1. Steering, Sep 17, 2019

THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION. I WAS DRIVING ON A SUNNY DAY ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 70 MPH ON A LONG CURVE. WITHOUT WARNING MY STEERING WHEEL COMPLETELY LOCKED UP. I WAS SO SCARRED BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE GOING THE SAME SPEED OR ABOVE WHAT I WAS. I THOUGHT QUICK ENOUGH TO PUT ON MY HAZARDS, I COULDNT DIRECT THE CAR TO GO TO THE CURVE, SO I FIGURED I WOULD SLOW TO A STOP AND GO FROM THERE. A COUPLE MINUTES LATER WHEN I WAS DOWN TO ABOUT 10 MPH AND PEOPLE HONKING AND FLYING PAST ME THE POWER STEERING ASSIST. FAILURE LIGHT CAME ON AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY WHEEL JERKED TO THE RIGHT A LITTLE AND I WAS ABLE TO SLIGHTLY START GOING TO THE SHOULDER. IT TOOK BOTH HANDS AND ALL THE STRENGTH I HAD TO MOVE THE WHEEL BUT I MANAGED. I CALLED MY HUSBAND TO COME PICK ME UP, WHILE WAITING I TURNED THE CAR ON TO MAKE SURE IT WAS THE POWER STEERING LIGHT THAT CAME ON, WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ON THE STEERING WAS BACK TO NORMAL, MY HUSBAND FOLLOWED ME HOME WHILE I DROVE SLOWLY. THE NEXT DAY THE CAR WAS STILL FINE, UNTIL I WAS DRIVING BACK FROM THE STORE ON A COUNTRY ROAD THAT IS HILLY AND WINDING GOING 30 MOH THE LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE STEERING WAS REALLY HARD TO TURN OR MOVE IN ANY DIRECTION. I MANAGED TO GET HOME AND THAT IS WHERE MY CAR HAS SAT SINCE, I'M TOO SCARED TO DRIVE IT AGAIN. THIS IS BEYOND DANGEROUS.

  2. Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 17, 2019

MY ESCAPE SHAKES, MISSES AND STALLS INTERMITTENTLY. AS I AM BRAKING IN TRAFFIC IT STARTS SHAKING, THEN STALLS. IT ALSO STALLS WHEN I CHANGE GEARS, I.E. I AM IN R THEN GO INTO D. THIS HAS BEEN SO DANGEROUS! I GET STUCK IN THE LINE OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC AGAIN AND AGAIN. TRAFFIC BACKS UP BEHIND ME WHEN I STALL AND IT GETS SCARY! MY SONS(BOTH MECHANICS) BELIEVE IT IS THE VACUUM/ EVAPORATOR SYSTEM. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD GARAGE AND AFTER DRIVING IT FOR 10 MINUTES AND PULLING IT IN THE GARAGE THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD BE A $1989 REPAIR I WILL SEND YOU THEIR INVOICE. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR OTHER THAN THIS ISSUE...NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS EVER COME ON. I AM THE 2ND OWNER, AND HAVE NOT PUT 40000MILES ON IT SINCE I BOUGHT IT. IT HAD 42000 ON IT WHEN I BOUGHT IT IN 2014. I HAVE READ MANY REPORTS OF 2013-2014 ESCAPES HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE AND OWNERS PLEADING FOR AN EXTENDED VIN RECALL. I JOIN IN THAT PLEA!!!! I CANNOT AFFORD A REPAIR AT THIS COST AND I CAN'T AFFORD A NEW CAR. PLEASE FORD HELP WITH THIS DANGEROUS DEFAULT. MY SONS WON'T ALLOW MY GRANDCHILDREN TO RIDE IN MY CAR WITH ME AND I FEAR FOR THEIR SAFETY ALSO.🙁

  3. Steering, Sep 17, 2019

WHEN DRIVING, NOT RELATED TO SPEED OR CURVES, YOU'LL BE DRIVING ALONG AND FEEL THE STEERING TIGHTENING AND ARE THEN DOWN TO MANUAL STEERING. YOU HAVE TO PULL OFF AND TURN THE CAR OFF. WHEN YOU TURN IT BACK ON IT HAS RESET AND THE POWER STEERING RESUMES. WE HAVE PLUGGED IN TO AN ERROR CODE READER AND IT IS NOT RETURNING A CODE. AN ONLINE SEARCH HAS SHOWN AN INTERNAL SERVICE MEMO (CSP # 14N02 PUT OUT 8/26/2014) REGARDING THE ISSUE. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES, MOST RECENTLY TWICE LAST WEEK.

  4. Engine, Sep 16, 2019

CAR SIGNALS ITS OVERHEATING AND SHUTS DOWN AFTER BEING SHUT OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES ITS FINE. THIS IS DANGEROUS AS IT HAPPENED ON A FREEWAY ONRAMP. I HAVE REPLACED PRACTICALLY THE ENTIRE COOLING SYSTEM IN ADDITION TO THE RECALLS FORD HAS DONE.

  5. Engine, Sep 16, 2019

ENGINE COOLANT KEPT LEAKING. NOTICES ABOUT 'ENGINE COOLANT LOW' WERE NOT CORRECTED, EVEN AFTER I HAD 2 HEATER HOSES REPLACED, AS PER THE SERVICE REPAIR REPORT RECOMMENDED. THIS WAS DONE, FIRST ONE HOSE, COSTING $485, THE LIGHT STILL CAME ON ABOUT 4 WEEKS LATER, AND THE SECOND HOSE WAS REPLACED COSTING ~ $475. EVEN AFTER THIS, ON SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 7TH, 2019, THE ENGINE BEGAN MAKING INCREDIBLE NOISES AND SMOKE STARTING COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER, OUT OF THE LINE OF TRAFFIC AND MY GRANDDAUGHTER AND I GOT OUT IMMEDIATELY! NO COOLANT, NO OIL AND THE RADIATOR(/) CAP HAD BUBBLY 'STUFF' IN IT. I HAVE COPIES OF PAPERWORK THAT STATES, " CUSTOMER STATES THAT THE 'LOW ENGINE COOLANT 'LIGHT COMES ON, OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL MONTHS. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THE FORD DEALERSHIP ...N E V E R.. MENTIONED THAT THIS MIGHT BE PART OF A RECALL, FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM! I CONSIDER THIS FRAUD BY DECEPTION. AFTER BEING TOLD THAT A NEW ENGINE WOULD COST ME $7,000, FORD SAID THEY WOULD GIVE ME 'FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE OF $1700, TOWARD THE ENGINE COST. I AM RETIRED, WORKING A PART TIME JOB! I CANNOT AFFORD THIS, ESPECIALLY SINCE I FEEL THAT THIS WAS SUCH A WELL-KEPT SECRET BY THE DEALER. OBVIOUSLY, THIS IS THE SAME ENGINE PROBLEM THAT CAUSED NHTSATO REQUIRE A RECALL ON:12V551000 12/03.2012 AND RECALL #12V431000 09/04/2012. THIS CAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF THOSE RECALLED!! I'M LUCKY MY GRANDDAUGHTER AND I WEREN'T KILLED ON A HIGHWAY, OR INJURED OTHERS WHILE ON THE ROAD, DURING THIS FIASCO. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE. I APPRECIATE SOMEONE LOOKING OUT FOR THE CONSUMER.

  6. Engine, Sep 13, 2019

VEHICLE STALLS THEN RESTARTS IMMEDIATELY THEN STALLS AGAIN AFTER A SHORT TIME RUNNING, IT HAS DONE THIS ON 3 SEPARATE DAYS NOW IN THE LAST MONTH. IT WILL STALL AND RESTART ABOUT 3 TO 4 TIMES IN A ROW AND THEN DRIVE NORMALLY. THIS CONCERNS ME AS TO A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT IN TRAFFIC WAITING TO HAPPEN. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE SCANNED AND IT SHOWS NO FAULT CODES. MY LOCAL.FORD DEALER SAYS THEY ARE AT MINIMUM A MONTH OUT FOR APPOINTMENTS...... THIS IS NOT GOOD. FORD NEEDS TO STEP UP.AND STAND BEHIND THEIR VEHICLES. I HAVE SEEN VARIOUS WEBSITES THAT HAVE MULTIPLE PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. AS I SAID, FORD NEEDS TO FIX THIS BEFORE PEOPLE ARE INJURED OR HEAVEN FORBID....KILLED.

  7. Electrical system, Sep 13, 2019

I WAS DRIVING MY CHILDREN TO SCHOOL. I WAS PULLING ON TO OUR MAIN ROAD A HIGHWAY FROM A STOP SIGN AND THE ENGINE SHUTOFF. I WAS ABLE TO START IT AND DRIVE IT ABOUT A BLOCK WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS HAPPEN A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES. EACH OF THESE TIMES I WAS LEFT WITH MY 2 CHILDREN IN A STALLED CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. IT IS A MIRACLE WE DID NOT GET HIT OR HURT IN ANY WAY. WHEN I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO START IT ENOUGH AND MANEUVER US OUT OF TRAFFIC AND DANGER, WE WERE THEN STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE FIRST TIME WE WERE TURNING ONTO THE HIGHWAY, ALL OTHER TIME WE WERE IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY. WE HAD RAN THE CODE WITH A MECHANIC AND IT WAS A FUEL CONNECTOR ERROR.

MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I RECEIVED AN ERROR READING STATING MY ENGINE COOLANT IS LOW. I CHECKED COOLANT AND IT IS FULL. MY CAR STARTED TO STALL WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT. I LOOKED UP INFO ON THIS WEBSITE WHICH MIMICKED MY ISSUES EXACTLY. THE FORD RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER IS 12S41. I CALLED FORD MOTOR COMPAY CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER AND ASKED THEM ABOUT MY CAR AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEMS AND HOW THEY MIMICKED THE RECALL LISTED ABOVE. THEY SAID MY CAR WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THAT. I INFORMED THEM THAT IT WAS A 2013 ESCAPE WHICH SHOWS TO FALL UNDER IT AND THEY TOLD ME THAT MY CAR PROBABLY DIDN'T GET MADE WITH THE SAME PARTS AND MAY HAVE BEEN MADE AT A DIFFERENT TIME. I WILL NOW HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET AND I HAVE A HARD TIME DOING THAT SINCE OBVIOUSLY THE SYMPTOMS MIMIC THE RECALL. MY VEHICLE IS IN MOTION WHEN IT STALLS OUT AND TELLS ME MY SYSTEM IS OVERHEATING AND TO PULL OVER. IT IS A RANDOM THING. IT CAN HAPPEN WHEN JUST STARTED OR WHEN I'M DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD.

THE BUSHING ON MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE HAS GONE OUT. I AM UNABLE TO SHIFT MY VEHICLE INTO PARK OR REVERSE. IT WILL ONLY GO INTO DRIVE AND NEUTRAL. I AM NOT ABLE TO GO ANYWHERE THAT I MAY NEED TO REVERSE. WHEN I START MY CAR AND PARK IT THE CAR HAS TO BE IN NEUTRAL AND I HAVE TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THEIR ARE OTHER 2013 FORD ESCAPES WITH THIS ISSUE BUT THEY ARE SAYING MY VIN IS NOT ONE OF THEM. OBVIOUSLY MINE ALSO IS HAVING AN ISSUE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS COMING DOWN A HILL GETTING READY TO PULL INTO A FRIENDS DRIVEWAY AND PARK. IT WOULD NOT LEAVE D AND WHEN IT DID IT WOULD ONLY GO INTO D OR N.

ALMOST CAUSED 2 CAR ACCIDENTS WITH 2 DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS OF TRAFFIC. THERE WAS NO WARNING AT ALL. BAD TRANSMISSION NEEDS RECALLED

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, THE 'COOLANT LOW' MESSAGE APPEARED. AFTER COOLANT WAS ADDED TO THE VEHICLE, THE MESSAGE WENT AWAY. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE MESSAGE DISPLAYED HOURS AFTER CHECKING THE COOLANT LEVELS, WHICH WERE NORMAL. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, COOLANT WAS FOUND UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER AND LOCAL DEALER WERE NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000. *TT

VACUUM PUMP FAILURE. NO WARNING, WAS DRIVING ON AN EXIT RAMP FROM OUR STATE TURNPIKE AT LOW SPEED WHEN BRAKE PEDAL WAS VERY HARD TO PRESS AND IN TURN, CREATING A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I HAD JUST STOPPED TO PAY A TOLL ABOUT 200 YARDS PRIOR WITH NO PROBLEM. THE FAILURE OF THE VACUUM PUMP COUPLED WITH FORD UNABLE TO PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT FROM THE INCIDENT DATE OF JUNE 6TH, 2019 UNTIL AUGUST 28, 2019 CAN EXPLAIN THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. FORD EDGE FROM THE SAME MODEL YEARS HAVE THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM, WITH FORD EXTENDING THE VACUUM PUMP WARRANTY TO 150,000 MILES OR 10 YEARS. THIS EXPANSION OF THE WARRANTY SHOULD ALSO BE APPLIED TO THE FORD ESCAPE. WILL IT TAKE SOMEONE BEING INJURED OR WORSE BEFORE THE NHSTA FORCES FORD TO 'FIX' THE PROBLEM ACROSS THE BOARD WITH DEFECTIVE VACUUM PUMPS ON THEIR WATCH?

POWER STEERING DEFECT. MY CARS POWER STEERING HAS FAILED AND I WAS TOLD I NEED AN EPAS RACK, THE CODE IS U3000 PSCM INTERNAL FAILURE. I HAVE 72,875 MILES ON THIS 2013 FORD ESCAPE. I TRIED TO PULL OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AT WORK AND THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT MOVE. I UNDERSTAND FORD HAS HAD TO RECALL OVER 1.1 MILLION SUV'S FOR POWER STEERING DEFECTS. THIS REPAIR WILL COST ME $1,800 TO REPAIR. I AM TOLD MY VIN # IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BUT WITH ALL THE PROBLEMS THE OTHER 1.1 MILLION SUV'S HAVE HAD I FEEL LIKE MINE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. JOE COOPER FORD OF EDMOND, OK HAS MY VEHICLE NOW FOR REPAIR 405-475-9000. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY DOING 60 MPH AND THIS POWER STEERING FAILURE WOULD HAVE HAPPENED.

MOVED THE GEAR SHIFT ON THE VEHICLE INTO REVERSE BACKED UP THE VEHICLE 5 FEET WENT TO PUT IT IN DRIVE AND IT WAS STUCK IN REVERSE, THE GEAR SHIFT CABLE CAME OFF OF THE LEVER ON THE TRANSMISSION TO SWITCH GEARS BECAUSE OF THE BUSHING BREAKING. THIS IS A RECALL ON OTHER VEHICLES LIKE MINE BUT NOT FOR MY VIN, DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE
