Recalls and investigations

  1. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.

  2. Power train, automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl)Jun 10, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

  3. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  4. Power train, automatic transmission, lever and linkage, floor shiftJul 16, 2018

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Ford Escape, and 2013-2016 Ford Fusion vehicles, equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. The recall began September 20, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S20. Note: Owners are directed to use the parking brake until the recall remedy repairs can be made.

A component within the door latches may break, preventing the doors from latching and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Due to an assembly misalignment between the exterior door handle and the door outer panel, the affected vehicles have doors that may be difficult to close or may possibly open while driving.

A door that opens unexpectedly may result in an unrestrained occupant falling from the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the mounting of the door handles, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S03.

  15. Engine and engine coolingDec 3, 2012

This is an update to a recently announced recall. Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through November 26, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines, as well as certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2012, through November 29, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. Coolant system leaks may cause the engines to overheat and leak flammable engine fluids.

If flammable engine fluids come in contact with the vehicle’s hot exhaust system, a vehicle fire could occur.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine for coolant system leaks and reprogram the vehicle’s powertrain control module and instrument cluster with an updated calibration and overheat strategy software. There will be no charge to owners for this service. Owners were recently notified to contact dealers to arrange for alternative transportation as Ford developed a remedy. Owners will be shortly receiving notifications to contact Ford dealers to schedule the free remedy repair. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

SINCE AUGUST 2015-APRIL 14, 2016 I HAVE TAKEN MY VEHICLE TO THE FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOUR TIMES DUE TO REDUCTION OF ENGINE POWER/ENGINE OVERHEATING WARNING. MY FORD WAS SUBJECT TO THE RECALL AND SERVICED IN AUG 2015. IN JANUARY 2016 AND TWICE IN APRIL 2016 I HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH ENGINE REDUCTION/VEHICLE HEATING GAUGE IDLE ON HOT/THE VEHICLE SPUTTERS AND RIDES EXTREMELY HARD UNTIL YOU CAN COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. ALL INCIDENTS HAVE HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC AND ONCE ON THE INTERSTATE. WHEN IT HAPPENED ON THE INTERSTATE I BARELY MADE IT TO THE SHOULDER AS I HAD TO TRY AND CROSS A LANE OF PASSING VEHICLES TO DO SO. I DO NOT FEEL THAT FORD HAS ADEQUATELY FOUND A FIX FOR THIS HUGE AND DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND I DO NOT KNOW IF A CONSUMER HAS TO BE KILLED FIRST FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT AND SUGGEST A FIX THAT IS VIABLE TO THE PROBLEM. I AM FEARFUL TO EVEN DRIVE MY FORD DUE TO THE IS PROBLEM SINCE IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. I AM REQUESTING THAT YOU PLEASE REVIEW THIS FOR ALL OF THE CONSUMERS THAT FORD CONTINUES TO SELL THESE AUTOMOBILES TOO.

MY FORD ESCAPE 2013 STALLS WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS, LIKE A PARKING LOT, AT A STOP SIGN. IT HAS DONE IT NOW 4 TIMES IN 2016. THE ENGINE JUST LOSES POWER AND STALLS. THE RED OIL LAMP AND BATTERY LAMP COME ON. NO SYSTEM CHECK MESSAGES SHOW. IT WILL START SOMETIMES AND STALL AGAIN IMMEDIATELY, SOMETIMES IT STARTS AND THEN IS OK FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE TRIP. THE FORD DEALER COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM WHEN THEY CHECKED IT RIGHT AFTER AN INCIDENT. OFFERED TO DRIVE IT TILL THEY FIND THE PROBLEM AND GIVE ME LOANER TILL THEN. ???

  4. Engine, Apr 6, 2016

RECALL 14S17 SPECIFIED THAT A FAULTING WIRING HARNESS FOR THE MAP SENSOR COULD BE REPAIRED BY SPLICING THE WIRING HARNESS. I HAD THIS RECALL WORK PERFORMED ON MY VEHICLE IN OCTOBER 2014, BUT SINCE THEN THE SYMPTOMS WHICH LED TO THE ORIGINAL RECALL PERSISTED. MULTIPLE TIMES, THE VEHICLE HAS STALLED IN TRAFFIC ON A CITY STREET, OR FAILED TO RESPOND TO THROTTLE INPUTS WHILE MERGING ONTO A HIGHWAY. THESE ARE VERY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS. SINCE THEN, FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN ADVISING FULL REPLACEMENT OF THE SAME WIRING HARNESS (NOT JUST A SPLICE). THIS IS PERFORMED AT MY COST, NOT FMC'S. FULL REPLACEMENT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE ORIGINAL SOLUTION TO THIS RECALL, AND A SECOND RECALL OR REVISION SHOULD BE ISSUED TO FORCE FORD TO PROVIDE A FULL SOLUTION RATHER THAN A HALF-MEASURE.

  5. Engine, Apr 6, 2016

AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR 7 MINUTES AFTER I STARTED IT, THE CAR OVERHEATED ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAD TO PULL OVER IN A PARKING LOT AND SHUT OFF THE CAR. THIS SAME PROBLEM HAD HAPPENED EXACTLY ON MARCH 16 AND THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE HAD REPLACED THE COOLANT STAND PIPE STANDPIPE. THEY SAID THERE IS NO RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH VIN YET IT IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENS.

I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN TO HAVE THE RECALLS FIXED ON IT. 5 MONTHS LATER, MY ENGINE STILL HAS THE LOCALIZED OVERHEATING, ANTIFREEZE LEAKS AND ENGINE CRACKS. THE ENTIRE ENGINE IS RUINED. THE DEALERSHIP SOLD ME A CAR THAT WAS COMPLETELY UNSAFE FOR MY CHILDREN AND I. THIS RECALL IS SAID TO CAUSE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRES. EVEN AFTER THEY INITIALLY FIXED THE RECALLS, THE VEHICLE STILL WILL OVERHEAT AND CAUSE FIRES! ADDITIONALLY - RUINING THE VEHICLE ENGINE. FORD WILL NOT REPAIR, REPLACE OR REFUND BECAUSE THEY SAID THEY ALREADY CLOSED THE RECALL OUT - EVEN THOUGH THE RECALL WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FIXED.

EXCESSIVE REAR BRAKE WEAR RESULTING IN NEED FOR NEW ROTORS AND PADS AT LESS THAN 20K MILES. OWNER HAS COMPLAINED TO DEALER AT THAT TIME AND WAS TOLD SYSTEM WAS OK. BY 30K MILES REAR BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO SEVERE SCORING OF ROTORS AND PADS WORN THROUGH. VEHICLE IS DRIVEN SAFELY: NOT CHARGING STOP SIGNS, BACKING OFF FOR STALE GREEN LIGHTS, ETC. VERY LITTLE BRAKE USAGE TO SLOW DOWN IN THIS VEHICLE. REAR ROTORS AND PADS HAVE BEEN REPLACE AND IT WAS FOUND THAT VERY LITTLE TO NO LUBE WAS FOUND ON THE CALIPER PINS. FRONTS HAVE BEEN INSPECTED AND ARE NOT GOING TO NEED ATTENTION FOR MANY MORE MILES. IT APPEARS THAT THE BALANCE BETWEEN STOPPING BETWEEN THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKES MAY BE A DESIGN PROBLEM. REAR ROTOR DIAMETER TO FRONT ROTOR DIAMETER IS 300MM TO 330MM WHICH MAY BE TOO LITTLE SWEPT AREA VERSUS INADEQUATE FRONT PRESSURE. FRONT PADS WILL BE REPLACED TO ESTABLISH A NEW BASELINE FOR COMPARISON. FORD WAS NOTIFIED VIA PHONE AND EMAIL TO LITTLE OR NO SATISFACTION. I'M SURPRISED THAT A FORMERLY RESPONSIVE COMPANY HAS GOTTEN SO FAR BEHIND IN CUSTOMER COMPLAINT HANDLING. CHECKING THE WEB, NUMEROUS INSTANCES OF THIS TYPE OF PERFORMANCE HAVE BEEN FOUND. IT IS MY OPINION THAT A "CONCERN" SHOULD BE OPENED IMMEDIATELY. EVEN MY SELLING DEALER IS UNRESPONSIVE, YET FORD PERSONNEL COULD NOT SUGGEST AN ALTERNATIVE DEALER NOR SHARE DEALER RATINGS WITH THEIR CUSTOMER. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN PLAGUED BY NUMEROUS RECALLS ALREADY AND THERE ARE YET TWO MORE TO BE PROCESSED. A LOT OF GOOD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY DOES ONE! HELP PLEASE.

CORRESPONDENCE WITH FLOOD FORD OF EAST GREENWICH, RI TO: MICHAEL WHYTE (FORD SERVICE ADVISER), RE: CRASH RISK WITH 2013 FORD ESCAPE (STALLING WHILE DRIVING AND ALSO LACK OF BEING ABLE TO ACCELERATE VEHICLE WHILE ENGINE IS RUNNING). VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO 2 DIFFERENT FORD DEALERS FOR SAME PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD DIAGNOSE AND/OR REPLICATE PROBLEM. THIS ISSUE AND CIRCUMSTANCE HAS BEEN REPORTED NUMEROUS TIMES UPON GOGGLE SEARCHES (PLEASE SEE BELOW). I CONTACTED THE FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER AGAIN TODAY TO DOCUMENT THE SITUATION SURROUNDING OUR VEHICLE (CASE # 8980601). PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAD CONTACTED THEM ORIGINALLY ON FEBRUARY 29TH (CASE #8916920) AND THEY REFERRED ME TO THE FLOOD DEALERSHIP AFTER WE HAD BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE TASCA DEALERSHIP ON FEBRUARY 28TH AND 29TH. THEY TRIED TO CONTACT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT FLOOD FORD AT 4:00PM TODAY BUT WERE NOT ABLE TO GET THROUGH. I ALSO CONTACTED THE CONSUMERS FOR AUTO RELIABILITY AND SAFETY AND THEY RESPONDED BACK WITH THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE AND STRONGLY EMPHASIZED NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL CRASH RISK. I AM ALSO IN THE PROCESS OF REPORTING THE DEFECT TO THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION AND HAVE ALSO CONTACTED THE WJAR CONSUMER ADVOCATE DEPARTMENT SURROUNDING OUR DILEMMA TO SEE IF THEY CAN HELP US AS WELL. HOPEFULLY THE EXPERTS AT FORD CAN HELP PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INSIGHTS AS TO HOW TO BEST ADDRESS THIS SITUATION. PURCHASED VEHICLE IN AUGUST OF 2014 WITH 28,000 MILES ON IT. ABOUT 2-3 WEEKS AGO THE VEHICLE JUST STALKED, LOST ALL POWER THEN DIED ON MY WIFE WITH MY 19 MONTH OLD BABY GIRL IN THE CAR. VEHICLE STARTS RIGHT BACK UP WHEN THIS OCCURS. IT HAPPENS A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK AND IS VERY DANGEROUS. SOMETIMES IT WILL DIE WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO ACCELERATE OR MERGE INTO TRAFFIC. TOOK IT TO THE SAME FORD DEALER WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM AND THEY WERE ABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, NO CODES ARE PRESENT IN THE VEHICLE EVEN WHEN IT HAPPENS. THE FORD SERVICE WRITER AND TECHNICIAN SAID THAT IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY. THE VEHICLE HAS 52,000 MILES ON IT HOWEVER I WAS TOLD NO WARRANTY OR RECALL COVERED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE THROTTLE BODY. I PAID FOR THE THROTTLE BODY REPAIR. LESS THAN 48 HOURS LATER THE VEHICLE DIES AGAIN ON MY WIFE WHILE PULLING OUT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. AGAIN WITH MY CHILD IN THE BACK SEAT.

CAR NEARLY STALLS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP OR FROM A SLOWER SPEED. RPMS REV UP AND WHEN IT FINALLY GOES, IT SURGES FORWARD. THIS IS GOING TO CAUSE ME TO BE REAR ENDED! I'VE HAD THE CAR INTO THE DEALER TWICE ALREADY FOR THIS PROBLEM, YET IT CONTINUES. THERE ARE TWO TIMES WHEN IT OCCURS. FIRST IS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP AND SECOND IS IF YOU'VE HAD TO SLOW DOWN (WHEN ANOTHER CAR IS TURNING OFF THE ROAD) AND THEN YOU TRY TO ACCELERATE AGAIN. USUALLY HAPPENS IN LOWER GEARS AROUND 15-30 MPH.
