Recalls and investigations

  1. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. 1. Engine and engine cooling, Oct 5, 2023

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while operating the vehicle with the air conditioner activated with heat selected, the air failed to get warm or hot. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the failure was due to a faulty engine head gasket caused by a coolant leak into the engine cylinders. The mechanic informed the contact that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 116,601.

  2. Engine, Oct 3, 2023

The vehicle started to blow burning oil from the exhaust on a cold start. The vehicle started to occasionally lose acceleration. Also there was a clicking noise from the engine. After about a week, the low coolant trouble light came on. I took the vehicle to my mechanic and he stated that there were serious engine problems. He said the troubles were definitely engine problems. He said it was probably due to bad cylinders and cylinder heads.

  4. Engine and engine cooling, Sep 20, 2023

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the vehicle had experienced rough idling and was taken to the local mechanic who diagnosed that engine coolant was present inside cylinder #3. The contact was advised to take the vehicle to the local dealer for service. After retrieving the vehicle, while driving approximately 25 MPH, the message "Engine Overheating" had displayed. Upon inspection it was discovered that there was no coolant inside the reservoir however, there was no visible coolant leaks found. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V209000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 74,000.

  5. Engine, Sep 19, 2023

Vehicle coolant level sensor failed. This is causing the engine to overheat and broke the head gasket.

  6. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 12, 2023

This vehicle was purchased by an “Authorized Dealer “ on August 31st 2023. I was unaware of the many issues that this vehicle had. Within the first few hours of driving off the lot in this car, I put the car in reverse and for one the back up camera stalled, secondly, a message appeared stating the camera is unavailable and for me to contact the dealer. Well I did, I contacted Five Star Ford and was told $165 just for a diagnostic. Additionally, I was driving on the highway Sept. 9th and the car just began to lose power. I literally was pedal to the metal trying to get home in hopes that this vehicle didn’t give out on me. Shortly after that, the check engine light came on and as I accelerated, this rough noise seemed as though it was getting louder and louder. Last but not least, this car drinks gas likes it’s going out of style. The overall mileage is bogus. According to the odometer after having this car for 11 days, I had supposedly put 1,000 miles on this vehicle!!!! That’s absurd to me!! I haven’t been out of the town or anything. I’ve watched the odometer jump from 120812 to 120837 after only traveling about 2 and half miles. Like what’s going on with this these faulty transmissions in these cars, FORD! What are you doing about it??? People work hard to purchase a car for them and their family. Why make our lives more difficult with these faulty vehicles??!!

  7. Engine, Sep 11, 2023

My vehicle has had ongoing coolant issues. Come to find out the coolant has been leaking into the cylinder. I started my car it stalled and stared smoking like it was on fire.

  8. Engine and engine cooling, Sep 11, 2023

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the coolant warning light illuminated. The contact then stated that the coolant level was low. Additionally, the contact stated that within two months, she had added coolant to the vehicle twice. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was given a tune-up and the contact was informed that the timing chain needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that coolant had leaked into that engine and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacture was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was not included in a recall. The contact was informed that the cost for the repair would be out of pocket. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000.

  9. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 10, 2023

While driving the vehicle, the car will stall without any warning. The oil light will display, as well as the check engine light, but only after the car shuts down and is not operational. This has occurred at least 4-5 times in the past year or so, the most recent 2 weeks ago. The stalls occur while the vehicle is in motion, and there is no prior warning given. The car has been hooked up to a code reader, which displayed the code P0087, which is a Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low. If we let the car set for a few hours, it will start up and be operational, but then will stall out again with no warning. We took the car to a Ford Dealership in Trinidad, CO, and the technician said he assumed it was a low fuel pressure sensor, which he replaced, but stated that he only suspected that was the problem since he could not get a code to come up at that time. After the sensor was replaced, the car has continued to stall out while being driven. I called Ford to ask if my car was part of a fuel system recall, they stated my vin was not listed, although my vehicle was manufactured within the time frame of two, 2014 Ford Escape fuel system issue recalls. The safety of myself and my family are put at risk every time the car stalls out because we have been traveling on the interstate and have almost been hit by other vehicles due to not being able to accelerate or have time to pull off to the shoulder immediately, We have also been crossing through intersections with heavy traffic when the car will stall out without warning, which has led to near collisions. My vehicle is available upon request for inspection.

  10. Engine, Engine and engine cooling, Sep 9, 2023

Our ford escape has been leaking coolant excessively and is experiencing intermittent over-heating of the cylinder head. Ford has a recall for this matter however our local ford dealership refuses to service our vehicle, there are also two other recalls that they are refusing to acknowledge.

  11. Engine, Aug 23, 2023

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while his wife driving 35 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with failure in cylinder #2 and #3. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

  12. Other or unspecified, Engine, Aug 21, 2023

I bought this vehicle exactly 1 year ago back in June from The BMW dealership in Arlington, Texas Under the assumption that there was nothing wrong with it Mechanically. The dealership Lied to me because not even a week later. I had to take it to a Firestone to see what was wrong with it. And they said that there was coolant loss, They did do a pressure track and said at the time it was not the gasket period I have taken it to other mechanics since then trying to fix what they said the issue was but there has been a loss of coolant in that vehicle and we don't know where it's going period period I don't know what to do because there was a recall on it. From what I searched on the internet long ago? But it is no longer available. And that's unfortunate for me. Because I believe that the recall that they had back in 2017 I believe that's the issue that is currently wrong with the vehicle the recall code was 17s09. I don't know what else to do because I'm at a loss. I spent eight thousand dollars on a vehicle that I cannot even enjoy Because it has been in the shop more times than I have driven it

  13. Engine, Aug 19, 2023

On August 19 2023 I brought my 2014 Ford Escape SE to an auto repair shop, because the engine temperature went up. The repair shop first told me that the coolant resevoir and the hose was leaking. After that was fixed. The repair shop could not start the car it overheated. The repair shop said that the head gasket blew and the engine was done. I paid almost 11000 dollars for this car with 87000 miles on it. The only car I have. I do not know what to do with this situation. I found out that the 2014 Escape models is a problem with coolant leaking into the engine. Now im out of a car and do not know what to do.

  14. Engine and engine cooling, Aug 11, 2023

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle started to run rough. The contact stated that the vehicle was vibrating with smoke coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that the "low coolant" and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The contact stopped and had the vehicle towed to a local dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that coolant had intruded into the engine block and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to TSB Number: 19-2346 Coolant Intrusion In Cylinders (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 137,000.

  15. Engine, Aug 9, 2023

I own a 2014 Ford Escape Eco boost 2.0 liter. Vehicle started losing coolant but no visible leak. Took car to be diagnosed at a ford dealership where they told me vehicle was fine and passed a pressure test. Less than 600 miles later the vehicle is overheating, smoking from engine and tail pipe, even for an extended time after vehicle is off. I have video of vehicle smoking while engine off. Now I am told it is a head gasket issue and repair is over $7k. This is a known issue that Ford refuses to acknowledge and issue a recall. There's been nurmerus of people whom have experienced exact issue and are joining a class action lawsuit. If NHTSA doesn't do their part to put this ford 1.6-2.0 liter on a recall, then the wrong doing continues and should be held accountable as well. There have been cases where same make/model has been reported catching on fire. Someone is going to get physically injured if not already. Requesting an investigation to conducted and faulty engines replaced.I am unable to load pictures and videos from computer I am submitting this complaint with. If permitted I will email pictures video, dealership pressure test , and other documenation from my personal computer.

  16. Other or unspecified, Engine, Aug 8, 2023

Car started having smoke out of tail pipe, been having to fill anti freeze once a month in to, vehicle , and has started misfiring not sure . Apparently antifreeze is leaking in to engine . May 2023 is when we have started having issues with anti freeze The consumer wanted to add that the vehicle also stalled out in traffic during a separate incident.

  17. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 4, 2023

The car is no longer drivable. I have an earlier reference number 11526542. When I called at that time I was unaware of the actual problem. In 2019 I had taken the car to Future Ford for a coolant problem. They stated in paper work there was no leak in the coolant but more coolant needed to be added. I return to have oil changed and ask them to add coolant. They refused. I went to Green Valley Tire and brake and they refused. Thought that was weird. Went to Auto Zone Folsom and bought coolant and added myself. Future Ford still stating no problem. I had purchased a 7 year waranty on the car and a plan were they did all the service. The car was only serviced by Ford Dealer. I have just recently learned that there is an issue with the Ford 2014 Escape Eco Boost System. I am not a mechanic but from what I understand coolant goes into the engine. Maybe a head casket blows out. It then causes car to overheat. Coolant intursion present. Future Ford recomends replace engine block per Future Ford. Was told just tempory fix likely will happy again. Design flaw. Dangerous not sure when it will occur and then car undrivable. Overheats could cause fire. Should be under lemon law. Car only has 55,000 miles on it. Attached estimate of $16,000 to fix by Future Ford. Also said their was a recall on coolant in 2019 but Ford Corporate said it did not show on my Vin #. Your system does not show it .

I had bought my 2014 escape less then four years ago. Back in June 2023 I had my dashboard light up with engine overheating pull over safely while I was driving. I pulled my car over as best as I could and saw my coolant was low. I was able to drive the five miles or so home after refilling the coolant. The coolant was again empty when I got home. The dealership checked and said no leaks or anything but I still have to refill my coolant every two days. From researching there are many issues with ford escape and coolant leaking. I am too scared to even drive it especially with my family in it knowing this leak may cause a fire or something

The car accelerates very choppy. I’ve also been getting a warning saying “ENGINE FAULT, SERVICE NOW.” I’m not sure what is wrong with it, it still drives as of right now and there is no recall for me to get it fixed.
