Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.
An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. 2014 Titanium Escape EcoBoost AWD. NO WARNING LIGHTS RE LOW COOLANT. I have it serviced every three - four months change oil and check fluids. Last service 05/19/2022. 208,000 miles. Car stalled/idle rough in middle of four lane freeway during rush hour. This happened last year in heat wave also. Tonight Landmark Ford in Tigard OR called, said car is totaled, needs to be scrapped or replace engine $18,000 +. Also said torque is twisted and transmission is needed. Asked if this is a known problem. Ashley at Landmark Ford said yes, this particular engine is known to leak coolant into cylinders causing engine failure. I bought the car at Landmark and they assured me they repaired ALL recalls since vehicle was new. However the coolant recall says warning light is installed and THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT WITH LOW COOLANT. Can't afford to pay off loan and buy a another car at 63 years old. Currently searching for repair history to see if this recall repaired. Where is the recall notice on this when there is page after page of exactly the same complaint on nhsta site? Last time I had a known issue Ford dealer refused to repair said my only recourse was to report to nhsta. That doesn't seem to be working for anyone else. There are so many complaints re this here just this year WHY ISNT' THIS RECALLED AND FIXED BY FORD!!!!!

per the coolant recall issued in 2017/2018, I had my car repaired at Ted Britt Ford where I bought my card. I have now had a coolant issue and my car now has been towed to a car repair shop that is stating I will need to buy a new engine due to a crack at cylinder 3 (Which I see repeated over and over for the exact cause on the message boards due to poor recall and that it needs to be recalled again) at a cost of approx $9,000 even though Ford has had these recalls but did not fix the problem as many upon many complaints on the message boards and many phone calls, emails to Ford with no resolutions. I am reaching out to NHTSA in hopes that not only my issue will be resolved whether through a recall. I look forward to a positive, speedy remedy as my car is now sitting in a repair shop parking lot. I have reached out to Ted Britt via email asking for help but once they found out it was due to this recall issue they have stopped responding. The Manager's name is [XXX]. **Update he did respond to me on 9-3-2022 with the 2018 Recall record (which I have uploaded here) and said I need to call Ford directly at 800.392.3673. I will call on Tuesday due to them being closed for the Labor day holiday. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

One day after a scheduled oil change my Escape idled very rough upon start up. The check engine light came on. I returned to the Dealer and they found the code was for the cylinder 1 misfire. the code was cleared and reported to me then it did the same thing for the next several days but no check engine light would come on. Today, upon start it idled rough and "Low Coolant require service" message popped up on my dash. Having pressure tested tomorrow to see if coolant is leaking into the cylinder.

The car failed while driving, it was inspected by and independent mechanic and also the Ford dealership, van bortel Ford in Rochester NY - it's a 2014 Ford escape titanium with 60,000 miles on it. They said the coolant leaked into the engine and the engine now needs to be replaced. We routinely maintained the car. There was no indication or lights that went off warning us of the issue - the car just suddenly stopped working one day and said it was overheating but there was no smoke coming from the engine. We could have gotten hurt while driving since it stopped automatically.

For the past five years, I've been experiencing low coolant issues which I realize isn't a safety problem in and of itself. It's been an ongoing issue and I've spent hundreds of dollars to have the same problem continuing to recur. The mechanics claim there's no leak yet every 2-3 months I have to put antifreeze in my car. Several times without notice (low coolant light not working), a high temp light comes on telling me to pull over to safety. The engine goes to low power. Usually after about 10-15 minutes, the car is fine. I've explained this to the dealership and never have they been able to find a problem, but I think the two are connected. The most recent safety-related issue was without notice, the high temp warning came on in very busy traffic and the car powered-down, presenting a significant safety hazard. THE CONSUMER REFERENCED RECALL 22S43/22V413, STATING THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE. THE CONSUMER REQUESTED TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR.

Engine and engine cooling, Jul 14, 2022
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would not properly accelerate due to a #2 engine cylinder misfire. Additionally, there was blue smoke coming from the exhaust. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the vehicle had experienced an internal coolant leak into the engine cylinder. The contact indicated that the failure eventually caused damage to the engine head gasket and the vehicle was inoperable. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 110,000.
Service brakes, Engine, Jul 9, 2022
The mechanical brake booster is connected to the overhead cam on Fords Ecoboost engine. This part is a vacuum pump that is powered by the overhead cam shaft. Over time the vacuum pump begins to have issues and becomes increasingly harder for the cam to turn. As the vacuum pump slows, it causes the brakes to be less efficient and increases stopping distance. As the pump degrades, it eventually will fail and freeze up. When this happens, the internal connection to the overhead cam shaft shears off. This cause a complete loss of breaking power leaving only the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. It also drops the internal connectors from the vacuum pump into the motor which damages the motor to the point where the motor must be replaced at a very high cost (it exceeds $10,000). Fords warranty does not cover this design failure. Owners of these vehicles are forced to replace the motor at their own cost or to scrap the vehicle. I believe that ford was aware of the possibility of the mechanical vacuum pump failure when they tested the design on F150s. Ford made a design change on the F150s to an electric vacuum pump. This may have been due to the F150s use as work vehicle and as a towing vehicle which exasperated the issue. Please investigate this issue, I believe you will find many other people who have this same issue with the eco boost engine design.

While driving on the highway at 65mph the engine began to fail. The Engine light came on and began flashing. I lost power in the engine, the car began to jerk and lost acceleration. Luckily I was able to make it to the side of the road and call for assistance. I had the vehicle towed to a repair shop, the mechanic ran a diagnostic test. It was determined that there is internal engine failure. The car is at 113,000 miles and hadn't had any issues or warnings prior to this happening. The mechanics can not find what has caused the engine failure. I was told that the engine needs to be replaced at an estimated cost of 7000 dollars! This vehicle has been maintained and taken care of, it's very dangerous having an engine spontaneously fail while driving on the highway. The engine should not be failing at 113,000 miles.
Suspension, Electrical system, Engine, Jul 9, 2022
I have owned this Ford for 3 years now. It uses coolent excessively and I have replaced many parts. The Catalyic Converter went out, all motor mounts, font and rear suspension, engine burp valve, faulty throttle body, fried drivers side bulb socket, wiper arms stripped, weather stipping corroding on windshield near hood, front window cracked and damaged, coolent temperature control sensor and firmwware update not automated and dealer charges $250 to update car software for engine improved performance. Sluggish, bogging and unresponsive car until software update and throttle body repair. All around a lemon for as many parts I've put on in a short amount of time. I've spent over $3300 on parts alone. The dealer in Upland services the cars oil but fails to fill the fluids, spills oil on my spark plugs and ruins the fasteners to the skid plate by over torqueing them. It has been the worst car experience of my life and I've never had to replace so many parts in so short of time. I drove a 1974 Nova around for 20 years and still haven't replaced as many parts. This is ridiculous and predatary of Ford to put out cars with these many short term problems on them. Literally evering is going bad after 100k miles. I read post after post of people needing new engines and transmissions because of Fords incompetience. I just got a recall for the Transmission which means the car is unsafe to drive and Ford does not have the ability to fix it until the end of the year. Without a rental or replacement car I am risking my life driving this vehicle and the integety of the tranmissions. So if the tranmissison breaks before the recall is able to fixed then what happens then. Is it now a complicated legal matter where attorny's mitigate the age of the vehicle vs their incompetience. Ordering parts with Ford is a nightmare. They sometimes send the wrong parts and leave it up to the dealers to do the return or not. So it takes weeks between calling back and forth with Ford.com parts.

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle overheated and cannot simply be fixed. The check engine warning light illuminated with a message to stop the vehicle immediately displayed. The temperature gauge was on HOT. The contact turned the vehicle off for 5 minutes, then restarted and drove to the local independent mechanic. The vehicle was diagnosed with an expansion tank crack and sensor failure. The mechanic related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V209000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The expansion tank and sensors were replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 53,000. Mechanic changed 3 sensors and the expansion tank and has cost consumer over $400. Engine is overheating and can only be fixed by the manufacturer.

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated and there was smoke coming from underneath the hood. Additionally, the temperature gauge indicated that the engine was overheated. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the engine coolant was constantly low however, there were no visible leaks present. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that coolant had leaked into the engine cylinder causing severe damage to the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 100,000.

Coolant is being leaked into the engine, have to "top" off coolant every couple of weeks, no visible leaks underneath, engine light has come on, and there has been rough idling and driving experienced. Engine light will go off (on its own) and car will run ok, but happening more frequently and feel the inevitable is an engine replacement (was told that this is what will need to happen)

I'll be driving along and sometimes going 30 miles an hour sometimes going up to 65 70 miles an hour on the interstate And while I'm accelerating the car will start shaking like the the whole thing wil. In the only way that it stops is if I let off the accelerator and go slower speed accelerate you know what it means there's that magic speed but like if I have my cruise control on then it has to be at a certain speed because otherwise it will just start shaking and shaking and shaking

IN THE FIRST FEW MINUTES OF OPERATION THE TRANSMISSION/ENGINE SPEEDS UP AND IF NOT EXPECTING IT A SURGE FORWARD COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. SIMILIAR PROBLEMS ALMOST EVERY TIME THE CAR IS STARTED.

Car is losing coolant. Had pressure tested and am told there is no leak but the issue is a blown head gasket. No warning signs were present regarding this issue, posing a huge safety risk. Coolant is leaking into engine due to faulty gasket. I am told that this issue is extremely prevalent with other Ford EcoBoost engine models as well.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request?-Coolant/temperature sensor causing the vehicle to overheat, cylinder head to crack, and coolant leak into the engine. Safety jeopardized?-Yes, the car was then burning the coolant and it was entering the air and inhaled. Possible connection to a confirmed cancer case in the main driver. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center?-Yes, it was reported to two separate Ford dealerships a total of 5 times. Each time the dealership told me they could not diagnose the problem. I took the car to an independent service center and it was confirmed the head was visibly cracked in 3 locations and the car was burning coolant and emitting it through the exhaust. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others?-The vehicle has been to Ford dealerships and inspected for service, recalls, and multiple times for this specific issue. Were there any warning lamps?-No warning lamps, no other symptoms prior to the failure. I purchased the vehicle from Fred Beans Ford, West Chester in Feb. 2016. In Oct. 2016 the vehicle overheated without any warning lamps or messages and it was towed to Fred Beans Ford. The service department stated there were no issues with the vehicle but replaced the temperature sensor that was recalled. The problem continued with the coolant level decreasing and no leaks could be found. The vehicle was taken to Fred Beans for a coolant leak 3 additional times and each time I was told they could not diagnose it and they just refilled the coolant. After this I checked the coolant daily and refilled it if needed to the appropriate level. October 2021 I took it to New Holland Ford where they could not diagnose it. May 2021 an independent center and machine shop where 3 cracks were found in the head causing coolant to leak into the engine and come out the exhaust.

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 35-45 MPH with her granddaughter in the front passenger’s seat, the vehicle began to stall. The warning "Low Coolant Level; Service Vehicle Immediately" message was displayed. The contact veered to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and drove back to her residence. The contact's son refilled coolant in the vehicle. However, the failure reoccurred while driving the next day. The contact's son, an independent mechanic, diagnosed that the coolant sensors, the engine spark plugs, and unknown parts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle had previously been repaired for a coolant leak failure in 2017 and 2018. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 122,000.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V209000 This current recall, is not attached to the VIN for my Ford Escape and the car is in the shop for the exact issue. Ford said the NHSTA would have to attach the known recall to the VIN Ford Repair order 787886
