Recalls and investigations

  1. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. The contact stated the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V209000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 51,479.

  2. Engine and engine cooling, Dec 28, 2021

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle would intermittently fail to accelerate upon the depression of the accelerator pedal without warning. As the failure persisted, the contact checked the engine and discovered that there was no coolant in the engine. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer where the mechanic discovered that the coolant sensor was defective. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V209000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) which he linked to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed him that his vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 126,000.

  3. Engine, Dec 24, 2021

Coolant level sensor failed after repair for recall number 17S09. Mechanic reports that senior failed in same way as documented in the recall. However Ford refuses to conduct the repair a second time.

  4. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Dec 16, 2021

Lights come on for engine and gas pump while in motion throws vehicle to right at 55 mph when gas light comes one says empty all the time does at stops too slams into next gear shaking car badly with a bang it does often enough at 1/2 tank only or below but does not read more than 1/8 tank from full when filling up at pump all the time

  5. Other or unspecified, Engine, Dec 13, 2021

In brief, It is my contention that safety recall# 17S09 service was not performed in its entirely on my vehicle and likely several others by the dealerships. The dealerships only replaced the engine coolant sensors & the motor mounts per their understanding of the recall instructions but did not replace the coolant system hoses as instructed in the Dec 13th correspondence to the dealers. After having several problems with coolant leakages in my vehicle which caused the check engine light to come on it was discovered that I had multiple hoses leaking. I spoke with a service manager at the dealership that performed my recall service in April/2018 about the hoses not being replaced which was my current problem? I was informed this was not what the dealerships were instructed to do by Ford Motors in their recall notices to them. Two different dealerships I visited were oblivious to this recall mandate. In the meantime I have incurred nearly $1500 in repair expenses because the recall that was investigated and mandated by NHTSA in 2017 was not performed in its entirety although Ford Motors assured this would be addressed in the recall. Investigation needed/warranted.

  6. Engine, Nov 13, 2021

It is an ongoing issue with the 2014 escape. They had a recall out for the coolant system. A healthy engine does not use coolant. I kept having it checked it had no visible leaks but was losing coolant No visible leaks. I got an engine light I took the car to Ford dealer here in Scarborough Toronto he told me the car coolant has been leaking into engine blocks. The dealer is claiming it has nothing to do with the recall. Ford won't fix it and is saying it's not part of the recall. They are saying I have to replace my whole engine. It is a 2014 Ford escape with 110000Km on it.

  7. Engine, Nov 13, 2021

2014 Ford Escape presents with major engine cooling system issues for several years despite regular repair and maintenance to these systems. Heat blows cold unless driving 55 mph or more and coolant needs to be replaced every two weeks during the fall and winter. Engine coolant leaks onto engine block despite regular repair for several years. Serious safety hazard possible due to this.

  8. Engine and engine cooling, Nov 10, 2021, fire

The contact's niece owned a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while his niece was driving at 60-65 MPH, she saw smoke coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle. The coolant warning light illuminated. The contact stated that as his niece veered to the side of the road and exited the vehicle, she saw fire underneath the vehicle. The contact's niece was able to extinguish the fire with the assistance of the fire department. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard where it was totaled. The used car dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that they could not assist as the VIN was not included in the recall for NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V209000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

  9. Engine, Nov 8, 2021

The car continues to have a leak of coolant even after the dealership claims it has been repaired. There is no visible sign of a coolant leak. The engine continues to run hot on a daily basis. The car does not even give a signal warning until it has already reached high temperatures and then states to shut the engine down immediately. The service center refuses to inspect my car as they state the recall has already been repaired. It appears to be an on going problem with 2014 1.6L Escape engines.

  10. Engine, Oct 29, 2021

Coolant is leaking into the engine, Ford is aware of this issue and has owners install an engine coolant sensor to avoid a potential fire risk. This was done with this vehicle however it obviously does not fix the underlying problem.

  11. Engine and engine cooling, Oct 22, 2021

Vehicle continues to lose coolant. No visible leaks. Vehicle previously tested for coolant loss. Dealership performed pressure test. Tested satisfactory. Problem has persisted. FORD has issued a recall for coolant loss. Contacted FORD, told my vehicle is not on the recall list. My vehicle has the 1.6l ecoboost engine that has a known problem of coolant leaking into the cylinders. FORD customer service is unable to explain why my vehicle is not part of the recall, only saying my VIN is not part of the coolant recall. At some point my vehicle will suffer catastrophic engine failure or a fire. FORD has put coolant level sensors in vehicles with this engine. This does not solve the leaking problem, but at least monitors coolant level. My VIN strangely does not qualify for this.

  12. Engine and engine cooling, Oct 22, 2021

Vehicle began shaking when idling and was taken to independent repair shop. Upon their inspection oil was found around the spark plugs which was an indication that there was a cracked cylinder head caused by overheating and requiring a new engine. There had been no sensor alert that coolant levels were low.

  13. Engine and engine cooling, Engine, Sep 30, 2021

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at slow speeds, the vehicle overheated. There was an abnormal odor and detection of heat inside the vehicle. A message to pull over and check the engine was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that there was anti-freeze in the engine and the engine needed to be replaced. The repair parts were not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified however, no further assistance was provided. The contact mentioned being extremely concerned about driving the vehicle and a possible fire. The failure mileage was 51,187.

  14. Engine and engine cooling, Sep 26, 2021

I was driving on the highway and all of the sudden the temperature gauge maxed out and the console said engine overheating. I pulled off to the side and as soon as I put the car in park, the gauge returned to normal. The coolant reservoir was full and the radiator was not unreasonably hot. The check engine light came on at the beginning and went away as soon as I pulled off. I do not know what caused this problem, but it has not been recreated since then.

  15. Engine and engine cooling, Sep 17, 2021

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle started overheating with a warning light on the instrument panel. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and opened the hood and saw coolant leaking all over the engine. The contact added some water in the vehicle and waited a few minutes and drove back to the residence. The contact’s husband works as a mechanic and diagnosed the vehicle with a cracked coolant reservoir. The vehicle was repaired, and the entire cooling system was replaced however, the failure persisted. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to be inspected however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact was informed that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V209000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

  16. Engine, Sep 10, 2021

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the low on coolant level warning light illuminated. While driving, another message was displayed on the instrument panel stating that the engine was overheating, do not drive. The contact pulled over into a parking lot and attempted to restart the vehicle however, the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to his residence. The next day the contact had the vehicle towed to the local dealer. The local dealer inspected the vehicle but was unable to restart the vehicle. The battery and starter were replaced, and the vehicle was diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and the engine was replaced; however, the engine overheating message was still displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.

  17. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Engine, Aug 13, 2021

When putting my vehicle into reverse it wouldn't go into gear it was stuck in a neutral position unless it was in park. If I would step in the gas it would just rev up the engine.

  18. Engine and engine cooling, Aug 10, 2021

The contact's father owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while his father was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle overheated and loss motive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V209000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was then towed to the dealer and diagnosed that there was coolant found in cylinder number 2 from a cracked head gasket. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be rebuilt or replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 44,778.

Driving on the highway I lost braking power the brake vacuum pump ceased up and broke the bolt in the cam shaft that had to be drilled out and replaced then that caused more damage to the cam and bottom end of the motor for the motor to throw the following codes: p0365 p0369 p0012 p0299 b1215 p0234 U3008 U3003 U0300 p1594 U0140 U0154 U2300 U0422 B1B36 With all these codes I did the following and am now without a vehicle thanks to FORD. This vehicle only has 58000 Miles is single owner and was well maintained till this incident now I am told the motor has to be rebuilt as the cam and bottom end are the issues with this vehicle and this has happened to a lot of people and could have cause a crash or deadly accident as no brakes and now no vehicle. The three sensors were replaced and brake vacuum pump and bolt that drives the pump from the cam along with new spark plugs and valve cover gaskets plus oil change and filter plus new battery and tires along with front rotors calipers brake pads and rear rotors and brake pads. I blame Ford for this as this is a well known issue with 2014 to 2019 models of Ford Escape Titanium 2.0l Eco Boost Engine with turbo. Garages all over the US and Canada have been just replacing the engines due to poor engineering on Fords part and I believe Ford should be held responsible to the engines replacement as it is not even 60000 Miles and I try to take good car of my vehicle only to have none now to drive. Ford Should be held Responsible.

I have a cracked cylinder head on cylinder number 3 that is leaking coolant into my engine. My vehicle was bought directly from Ford in 2014 and has 68,900 miles on it. I have done all of the routine maintenance over the years and there is absolutely no reason my vehicle should be having this issue. I have already had my car in the shop multiple times for the same issue. Engine light kept coming on and I could barely get it too accelerate before I was told it will cost almost $9000 to fix. I attempted to call Ford and they claim there is nothing they can do for me.

The coolant replacement valve need to be replaced every 6 months and there are other year of this vehicle that has been recalled but, I do not see it recalled on the 2014. I have replaced this part almost 5 times since I bought this car from my dealership.
