Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.
An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Ford Escape, and 2013-2016 Ford Fusion vehicles, equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

WHILE DRIVING THE CAR EXHIBITS AN ENGINE HIGH HEAR AND ENTERS SAFE MODE AND RAPIDLY DECELERATING. THIS HAPPENED ONCE AND WAS DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER AS A BAD PART FROM A PREVIOUS RECALL 17S09. IT OCCURRED AGAIN JUST RECENTLY AND WAS SUPPOSEDLY REPAIRED (COOLANT HOSE PROBLEMS) AND DID IT AGAIN IMMEDIATELY AFTER LEAVING THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT. IN BOTH CASES THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT 50 MPH ON A BUSY ROAD AND WE WERE LUCKY TO EXIT THE ROAD TO A SAFE AREA. THE ORIGINAL RECALL WAS RELATED TO ENGINE FIRES BUT THIS IS ANOTHER SAFETY HAZARD. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE THAT THE RECALL ACTION BY FORD IS INADEQUATE TO CORRECT THE CONDITION.

MY 2014 FORD ESCAPE WITH CLOSE TO 69K MILES ON IT STARTED RUNNING ROUGH, FELT AND SOUNDED LIKE IT HAD TO DO WITH TIMING IS THE VEHICLE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON DAYS LATER AND AROUND THE SAME TIME NOTICED LOW COOLANT ALERTS. TOPPED OFF COOLANT BUT ALSO NOTICED COOLANT WOULD BE RETURNED TO RESERVOIR WHEN REMOVING THE CAP TO REFILL. CAR CONTINUES TO RUN ROUGH SO I TAKE IT IN TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC. CODE COMES BACK SAYING IT'S A COIL PACKAGE. REPAIRS ARE MADE, CAR RUNS GREAT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS OFF. A DAY LATER THE LIGHT COMES BACK ON AND SO DOES THE LOW COOLANT WARNING. TOP OFF COOLANT AND DECIDE TO TAKE IT INTO A DEALER. I DO MY RESEARCH ONLINE AND FIND THIS IS IS QUITE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. DEALER TELLS ME I HAVE A COOLANT LEAK IN CYLINDER 3 MUCH LIKE OTHER REPORTS I READ. THEY CLAIM IT'S A DIFFERENT ISSUE FROM THE COOLANT RECALL FORD ISSUED. I HAVE A HARD TIME BELIEVING THIS IS THE CASE AND AM MINDBLOWN FORD DOESN'T HAVE A REMEDY FOR THIS ISSUE.

I HAVE ALREADY FILED A COMPLAINT REGARDING THE COOLANT LIGHT SENSOR THAT KEPT COMING ON WHEN THERE WAS COOLANT IN THE CAR. LESS THAN ONE WEEK AFTER PAYING TO HAVE THE SENSOR REPLACED, MY ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON FOR A CYLINDER 2 MISFIRE. SO NOW I AM BEING TOLD THIS IS A CRACKED HEAD GASKET. I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR FOR ONE MONTH AND IT HAS LESS THAN 100,000 MILES. THIS IS THE EXACT PROBLEM LISTED IN THE FORD RECALL 17S09 AND THIS VEHICLE WAS MADE AT THE PLANT ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALL DURING THE TIMEFRAME. THE EXPENSE OF THIS REPAIR NEEDS TO BE PAID FOR BY FORD. IT IS EXPENSIVE AND NOW MY CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE.

I TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP ON 122ND ST IN PORTLAND, THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG BECAUSE IT WASN'T THROWING ANY CODES. NOW I'M SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE ERROR CODE SAYS ENGINE FAULT SERVICE NOW. I'VE HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE ON THE CAR SO NOT SURE WHY THIS IS HAPPENING. CARS/SUVS SHOULDN'T JUST STOP WORKING WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING THEM.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE LOW COOLANT WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED CONTINUOUSLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS COOLANT IN THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE DISPLAYED AN OVERHEATING MESSAGE, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL. THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS AIR IN THE COOLANT LINE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED A WEEK LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE COOLANT WAS LOW IN THE VEHICLE AND WAS BURNING ETERNALLY; HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO LEAK. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO A RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V209000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR MORE THAN 3 HOURS. I PUSHED THE REMOTE START AND THE CAR STARTED, BUT IT SHUT OFF ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. THE SHUT DOWN WAS DUE TO OVERHEATING. THE ENGINE WAS COOL AND THE COOLANT WAS TEPID AT BEST. THIS IS NOT AN OVERHEATING ISSUE. THE CAR WILL NOT RUN ON MORE THAN 2 CYLINDERS. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE THE RECALL FOR THE COOLANT SENSOR. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE I WAS CHARGED TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE. THIS SHOULD BE NO CHARGE SINCE IT WAS RECALLED FOR THE OVERHEATING ISSUE. THIS OVERHEATING HAS CAUSED MY TRANSMISSION AND TORQUE CONVERTER TO FAIL AS WELL. THE COST OF THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD BE REIMBURSED BY FORD SINCE THEY HAVE KNOW ABOUT THE OVERHEATING ISSUE FOR A LONG TIME NOW.

THERE WERE ALSO OTHER MULTIPLE UNKNOWN INDICATORS THAT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE COOLANT VALVE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. SAYVILLE FORD (5686 SUNRISE HWY, SAYVILLE, NY 11782, (855) 561-1191) WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE. FORD 1.6L ECO-BOOST FAILURE. FORD KNOWS ABOUT THIS (NOT MINE, BUT THE ONGOING PROBLEMS). MY CAR HAS ONLY 74K MILES AND GREAT MAINTENANCE. THE VEHICLE OVERHEATED FOR A MOMENT. 2 WEEKS LATER, COOLANT FROM EXHAUST, BLOWN HEAD GASKET, WARPED HEAD. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE FORD 1.6L ECO-BOOST TURBO. FORD DUMPED THE ENGINE. OTHER COUNTRIES HAVE FORCED RECALLS (UK). THE NHTSA SHOULD DO THE SAME. THE SITUATION IS DRAMATIC AND CAN CAUSE MAJOR COLLISIONS.

ON 1/17/18 MILEAGE 47120 I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO OUR LOCAL FORD DEALER AND THEY REPAIRED THE VEHICLE UNDER WARRANTY DUE TO RECALL 17S09. HOWEVER, ON 8/5/2019 MILEAGE 62,500 THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING ROUGH AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. LONG STORY SHORT, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO ANOTHER FORD DEALER WHERE THEY DETERMINED THE VEHICLE HAD A CRACKED CYLINDER, THE EXACT SAME CONDITION THAT 17S09 WAS SUPPOSED TO FIX. WHILE I DID NOT SUFFER A SAFETY INCIDENT IN THIS CASE, MY CONCERN IS THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED CORRECTLY UNDER THE ORIGINAL RECALL, AND THUS THERE MAY STILL BE A SAFETY ISSUE THAT MAY AFFECT OTHERS.

ENGINE OBVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED OVERHEAT BEFORE SINCE PLASTICS OVER THE ENGINE WAS MELTED.

VEHICLE NEEDS "NEW ENGINE" AS DIAGNOSED BY TAPPER FORD DEALERSHIP, PAW PAW MI. WAS TOLD THE "BLOCK" WAS BAD AFTER "COOLANT LEAKED INTO ENGINE" FROM HEAD GASKET CRACKED. THIS VEHICLE HAS A RECALL STATING "LOCALIZED OVERHEATING OF THE ENGINE CYLINDER HEAD MAY CAUSE THE CYLINDER HEAD TO CRACK". THIS VEHICLE WAS AT STAND STILL IN TRAFFIC JAM ON HIGHWAY7/25/19 WARNING SOUNDS AND MESSAGE APPEARED ON DASHBOARD OF VEHICLE STATING TO PULL OVER DUE TO ENGINE OVERHEATING. VEHICLE ALLOWED TO COOL FOR 30MIN, PLACED APPROPRIATE AMOUNT OF ORANGE COOLANT IN TANK AS INSTRUCTED TO BY MANUAL AND DROVE CARE ANOTHER HOUR WITHOUT ISSUE. NEXT MORNING COOLANT TANK CHECKED AND NOTED NO COOLANT PRESENT, AGAIN PLACED APPROPRIATE AMOUNT IN TANK AS MANUAL STATES, DROVE VEHICLE ANOTHER HOUR. COOLANT LEVEL CHECKED FOR NEXT FEW DAYS AND HAD NO ISSUE. COOLANT LEVEL CHECK PRIOR TO DRIVING VEHICLE HOME FROM NORTHERN MICHIGAN, AGAIN NONE PRESENT IN TANK, AGAIN ADDED APPROPRIATE AMOUNT OF COOLANT, DROVE HOME APPROX. 350MILES WITHOUT ISSUE. NEXT MORNING (SUNDAY, AUGUST 4TH, 2019) STARTED SUV, ENTIRE VEHICLE WAS SHAKING, LARGE AMOUNT OF WHITE THICK EXHAUST PRESENT, SWEET SMELLING. VEHICLE BROUGHT TO LOCAL MECHANIC, STATED HEAD GASKET NEEDED REPLACED AND STATED A RECALL WAS OUT FOR AN ISSUE WITH A SENSOR THAT COULD MALFUNCTION AND CAUSE THIS DAMAGE. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO TAPPER FORD DEALERSHIP IN PAW, PAW MI FOR FURTHER EVALUATION. THIS DEALERSHIP TOLD US THAT AN ENTIRE NEW ENGINE WAS NEEDED AND WOULD NOT BE COVERED BY FORD. THE PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE OF THIS VEHICLE IS DUE TO THE RECALL STATED ABOVE. HOW CAN FORD REFUSE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AT A COST TO THEM? WAS GIVEN A PHONE QUOTE OF "$8,000.00" FOR THE NEW ENGINE. I DO HAVE A VIDEO OF THE WHITE THICK EXHAUST.

TRANSMISSION HAS A HARD SHIFT FROM TIME TO TIME MAKING IT FEEL LIKE THE ENGINE IS JUST GOING TO FALL OUT. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN DURING A SPECIFIC OCCURRENCE BUT IT SEEMS AS IF THE TRANSMISSION IS DELAYED GOING GEAR TO GEAR WETHER IT BE FROM PARK TO REVERSE TO DRIVE, OR FROM GEARS 1-5
